Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!
An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. In recent years there’s been a name associated with the horror genre that is guaranteed to get me excited… Lora Burke. From her absolutely amazing, captivating performance in Poor Agnes; to Justin McConnell’s 2018 sci-fi horror Lifechanger; to 2020’s amazing home invasion thriller For the Sake of Vicious, Burke has been one of the genres shining stars yet, for a lot of people, she’s something of an unknown. Hopefully Motherly, her Fourth stunning performance in a row, will change all that.

Happy Thursday, everyone! On tap today is a brand new list of streaming recommendations that I have put together as part of our ongoing Indie Horror Month celebration. This time, we’re showcasing five fantastic films that are available to stream on the Arrow player and are well worth your time. One note: Clapboard Jungle doesn’t arrive on Arrow until the 19th, but I thought it was a perfect title to include here, so you just have to hang on a few days until you can finally check it out for yourself.

Canadian director Justin McConnell has created a self-indulgent selfie-fest – I’d pass on his fantasy horror too
Justin McConnell is a Canadian indie director who has here created what amounts to a tiring and self-indulgent video diary of the last five years as he tries to get his passion project made (a fantasy horror called Lifechanger). It is interspersed with what feels like hundreds of thousands of interviews with beaming film people, some very famous (such as Paul Schrader and Guillermo Del Toro), some not so famous, but all giving us their well-meant platitudes about getting your films made by following your dream and realising that it’s all about storytelling.
Clapboard Jungle suffers from a weird mix of information overload and a lack of actual, usable information that might be of assistance to film-makers or of interest to film audiences. To an extraordinary degree, this film is packed with...

Clapboard Jungle is a documentary about the wonderful, yet utterly complicated world of filmmaking. Whilst not everyone may find it interesting, for those who do, it’s a documentary filled with information and fun facts about the creative process with interviews from filmmakers from all over the world, including the legendary Guillermo Del Toro.
The film was created by a young man & fellow filmmaker, Justin McConnell, and it follows his journey through the trials and tribulations of his life in this industry. The film is an easy watch and I didn’t once lose focus. I was glued to the screen, eager to learn more. It was well put together and fascinating seeing some of the film’s editing process within the film itself. What we see is raw and intense, yet incredibly structured and it almost acts as a manual handbook or guide for filmmaking.

My friend, Justin McConnell, has found a balance between his narrative work and documentaries over the years. After a very successful festival circuit run of his most recent doc, Clapboard Jungle, McConnell will direct another documentary, an adaptation of Caelum Vatnsdal’s book They Came From Within: A History of Canadian Horror Cinema. Vatnshdal's book came out in 2004 and was revised as recently as 2014. From the early Canadian infiltration of Hollywood in the thirties, to the flowering of Canuck horror films in the sixties and seventies, to the surreal products of the "tax-shelter" eighties and beyond, Vatnsdal shows how the Canadian horror film industry has, unwittingly or not, created a complex social, economic, and political portrait of a nation. The announcement follows. ...

Grimmfest have today announced the launch of their Grimmfest Easter Edition, a new annual event taking place over the Easter Weekend, and complimenting the long-established festival in October.
Easter is traditionally a time for rebirth, renewal, resurrection. But as the Pandemic continues to rage, and the world remains on lockdown for the foreseeable future, it is also a time for rethinking. Thus, while the Grimmfest team had hoped to be hosting a ‘live’ Easter event, instead, the Grimmfest Easter Edition will be taking place online, and will build on the success of Grimmfest 2020 online experience.
The festival will open on Thursday April 1st with our preview night that will feature the UK premiere of Kourosh Ahari’s surreal and sulphurous Iranian American haunted hotel horror The Night, which has already earned deserved comparisons to Kubrick’s The Shining, alongside the UK premiere of Lluis Danes’ visually ravishing reimagining of the...

Making movies is never easy, but making independent movies can sometimes require a level of masochism bordering on insanity. Justin McConnell's new documentary, Clapboard Jungle, takes an inside look at the nitty-gritty of indie filmmaking from a very personal place and it's a fascinating journey into a complicated business as told by some of the biggest names in the genre cinema world. You might know McConnell from some of the genre features he's written and directed over the last decade or so, you might know him from the films he's worked on as a cinematographer, you might know him from some of the many home video supplements he's worked on in between trying to get his dreams off the ground. But honestly, you probably don't...

He has also dabbled in a little bit of television as well: Lost in Space, Westworld, American Gods, Locke & Key, The Strain and Hannibal to name a few. McConnell hasn't broken into the industry like Natali has but I've only ever known my friend to hustle and hustle hard. His documentary Clapboard Jungle proves it. Which is why...

Have you ever considered making a film of your own? From a technical point of view it has never been easier, but because of that there’s more competition than ever before. Finding your feet in the industry is still incredibly difficult, never mind building a successful career. What do you need to know before you give it a try?
Every few years a documentary like this comes along, attempting to guide beginners who have their hearts set on filmmaking careers. Every few years, indeed, a new one is needed, because they go out of date fast. Justin McConnell's is a rare example because, unlike the bulk of them, it doesn't feel like a vanity project. McConnell is not under the impression that he's an expert with infinite knowledge to impart, but he does have a thorough understanding of the early stages of building a filmmaking career. He uses one of his.

Clapboard Jungle: Surviving The Independent Film Business
A couple of years ago, Justin McConnell took his highly distinctive horror film, Lifechanger, to Fantasia - we spoke to star Lora Burke about it. This year he’s back with a very different film – Clapboard Jungle, which is also set to screen at Frightfest. It’s a documentary about the film industry which loosely follows his journey in making and promoting Lifechanger, with lots of good advice for people at the start of their own filmmaking careers and an astounding number of big name interviewees, from Guillermo Del Toro to George Romero, Michael Biehn, Lloyd Kaufman and Fantasia’s own Mitch Davis. Shortly before all the chaos of the festival began, he and I connected and I asked him how much the film stemmed from his journey with Lifechanger or if it was a project he had felt drawn to separately from that.

If you know anything about the independent film world, it won’t be surprising to discover the project writer/director Justin McConnell is hoping to get off the ground at the start of Clapboard Jungle isn’t going to be much further along in its pre-production process four years later. That’s the nature of the beast. You’re going to have moments of elation when it appears that funds have come through and the inevitable spiral downward when those plans evaporate. You’re going to hit your head against a wall to draw blood from that stone until you realize stagnation isn’t doing anyone any favors when you have other ideas that may bear fruit quicker. Guess what, though? The next one probably won’t get made before the end of this journey either.

Canadian indie filmmaker Justin McConnell (Lifechanger) has been in the game for a good deal of his life, either by providing technical services, programming his Little Terrors short film series in Toronto, or by being behind the camera. It's the latter that McConnell's new documentary, Clapboard Jungle, investigates. Specificially, Clapboard Jungle asks, "what does it take to make an independent genre film? Is it worth the blood, sweat, tears, and agony of getting that elusive budget to make a film?" If you're Canadian, you can watch Clapboard Jungle via Fantasia and find out. McConnell got genre luminaries such as Guillermo del Toro, Larry Coehn, Paul Schrader, Larry Fessenden, Barbara Crampton, Mick Garris, and many more to speak more on what it takes --- in between five years of McConnell's own...

With Clapboard Jungle, filmmaker Justin McConnell brings together two things I’m extremely passionate about: genre-driven documentaries and independent horror. Most people may not know this about me, but years (and years) ago, I created and spearheaded a movement known as Indie Horror Month as a means to help underrepresented content creators in the horror filmmaking community have an opportunity to get their moment in the spotlight. It’s been something I’ve wanted to resurrect, especially because it seems so hard these days for truly independent voices to be heard, but trying to carve out that time has been difficult.
That being said, when I read the description for Clapboard Jungle, I knew this was going to be something that would be extremely pertinent to my interests and McConnell didn’t let me down. The project is an enlightening look at the ups and downs that many indie filmmakers are constantly facing,...

"Making movies is beautiful... Raising the money, selling them, is horrible." An official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled Clapboard Jungle, made by Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell. In full it's: Clapboard Jungle: Surviving the Independent Film Business, an "introspective journey following five years in the life and career of an independent filmmaker." The film is "intended to serve as a survival guide for the modern independent filmmaker." Featuring interviews with dozens of directors, producers, writers, actors, distributors, festival programmers, publicists and more, all while following one filmmaker's personal journey, this is a film created to help people stay afloat in a risky business. As nice as that sounds, it seems like it might just remind people that it's an intense challenge to get into indie filmmaking. Even this doc has been in development for almost six years, originally planned to release in 2016. It's finally ready for release. But...

My friend Justin McConnell and his team of producers and editors have been slaving away at his documentary Clapboard Jungle for, like, ever. Forever and ever. I'm reading the press release this morning (which I have decided to split up for emphasis) and am quietly surprised that he has been at it for six years now. Where has the time gone? Since 2014 McConnell has sat down with industry experts, film-making legends and all sorts of personalities, gleaming from them a bounty of knowledge about getting indpendant films made. From icons like Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space), Barbara Crampton (We Are Stil Here), Don Mancini (Child's Play) and the late George A. Romero (Night of the...

Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell's latest feature, Lifechanger, is a fascinating and engaging piece of science fiction/horror that succeeds far beyond its limited means in delivering an unusual experience for film fans looking for some brains with their body horror. The story of a being named Drew who believes he can live forever by draining the life from host after host, taking the lifeforce from unwitting victims, is an examination of our most base drive for survival. We begin with Drew having just taken over the body of a young woman, leaving her corporeal self a dried up husk after "he" takes her body, memories, and senses for his own, fending off the eventual rot that sets in when he stays in the same body for...

The concept behind writer/director Justin McConnell's latest horror movie is fantastic: a guy with the ability to shapeshift by killing his victims, goes on a murderous spree in an attempt to rekindle a relationship with the woman he loves.
It seems that McConnell's Lifechanger does offer up a reason as to why the shapeshifter needs to change bodies so many times but it seems what's most notable of the movie is that at just shy of 90 minutes long, it moves quickly; "Even the gore is efficient."
Lifechanger stars Elitsa Bako, Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Sam James White, Steve Kasan, Bill Oberst Jr. and Rachel Vanduzer.

A deadly shapeshifter takes what it means to be human away from his victims in the new movie Lifechanger, and with the new horror thriller coming out soon in the Us from Uncork'd Entertainment and in Canada from Raven Banner, Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Justin McConnell for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the movie's inception in 2014, the cinematic influences pulsating in the movie's DNA, and the massive practical effects scene that took the combined efforts of 10 people to pull off.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on your latest film, Lifechanger. When and how did you originally come up with the idea for this movie?
Justin McConnell: In 2014 I was getting frustrated with not being able to get a couple of larger films—The Eternal and Tripped—made. So I started brainstorming an idea that could be done on a very limited budget.
