As part of their second Frontières international co-production market, Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its Off-Frontières selection of film projects.
The selection includes three projects from Québec, including Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal director Boris Rodriguez’s next feature (Emerald Falls), as well as the latest documentary from Rewind This! director Josh Johnson (Canuxploitation).
Frontières market director Stephanie Trepanier told Screen: “We’re happy with the diversity of the Off-Frontières line-up. It allows us to feature more local projects and projects in a wider range of development stages.
“We’re also seeing more filmmakers with their first feature film project in there, which pleases us. The discovery and promotion of new genre filmmakers has always been an important element of Fantasia, and Frontières allows us to support them at an even earlier stage.”

Cheap Thrills, the indie thriller that scored the opening “Midnighters” spot at South By Southwest, has already landed a deal. The Paris-based company Films Distribution, whose past genre acquisitions include Benjamin Rocher’s cult zombie hit The Horde, Alex de la Iglesia’s insane clown-vs-clown epic The Last Circus and Franck Richard's darkly comic cannibal flick The Pack, will bring the film to the Cannes Film Festival to sell to distributors. Produced by Snowfort Pictures (whose horror comedy Big Ass Spider! is also screening at SXSW), Cheap Thrills is the directorial debut of screenwriter E.L. Katz (Home Sick, Autopsy). It stars Pat Healy and Sara Paxton – who previously starred in Ti West's The Innkeepers – along with David Koechner, Ethan Embry and Amanda Fuller. The story by Trent Haaga (Deadgirl) and David Chirchirillo (Dances with Werewolves) involves a new father facing eviction whose life is turned upside down when...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

We have to hand it to the folks at Indominia — for a newish on the scene distro, they are picking a wicked slate of titles. So much of what we’ve seen from them has been interesting. That, and we’ll support anyone who imports as much international cinema as they do. The Pack, which hits VOD today (9/27), is right along those lines. It’s a French horror film about a gal named Charlotte, who picks up a hitchhiker on a road trip she’s taking alone. As 100+ years of cinema have taught us, this is a bad idea. When we meet Charlotte in this clip, she’s been captured by a woman named La Spack, played by the always excellent Yolande Moreau. This hard-nosed old dame is the leader of a mysterious pack and they’ve got plans for young Charlotte. We’ll let you watch the clip from this Franck Richard directed film and you...

The first twenty minutes of writer/director Franck Richard’s atmospheric horror flick “The Pack” (aka “La meute”) are pretty standard stuff, which isn’t a good thing when your audience has seen this stuff a million times before. The setup is remarkably simple: A broken-hearted girl named Charlotte on a road trip to nowhere in particular picks up a scruffy hitchhiker on the side of the road. He seems nice enough, and even goes out of his way to make his chauffeur feel at home. While Charlotte catches a snap, this shady character pilots the car to a restaurant, where, after a seemingly pointless series of events, our heroine is branded and tossed into a large cage. In other words, it’s typical by-the-numbers torture porn goulash set in the French countryside. You’ll probably fight the urge to yawn several times during this time, but stay with me.

The Pack
Stars: Yolande Moreau, Emilie Dequenne, Benjamin Biolay, Philippe Nahon | Written and directed by Franck Richard
France right now is arguably a boiling pot for horror. Whether it’s a movie like Martyrs, designed to make you think more about the subject matter, or like Haute Tension, an onslaught of pure violence, the French are never scared to push the boundaries of what we see on the screen. The Pack is one of the latter… in some ways. It’s a movie of two halves and these two halves get quite confused with themselves at times.
At the start of The Pack Charlotte is running away from life or that’s what it seems anyway. She’s a girl with an attitude and she won’t take any crap from anybody. This is proven when she gets into a verbal argument with some bikers. This argument, plus being alone...

With current wave of brutal Euro-horror showing no signs of abating, the playing field is becoming pretty crowded, with film makers already being reduced to trying to one-up each other in terms of gore and nastiness. Thankfully, although “The Pack”, marking the debut of writer-director Franck Richard has more than then requisite servings of grue, it makes at least a little effort to throw a few new ideas into the mix. The French film also has a surprisingly high calibre cast of recognisable faces, including Benjamin Biolay (“Stella”), award winning Belgian actresses Yolande Moreau (recently in the “Gainsbourg” biopic) and Emilie Dequenne (“Brotherhood of the Wolf”) and acclaimed French veteran, Philippe Nahon (“Switchblade Romance”, “Irreversible”). Having impressed during a run at international genre festivals, the film lands shortly on region 2 DVD via Icon Home Entertainment, coming complete with specially commissioned exclusive artwork from British film poster artist Graham Humphreys. La Meute or The Pack attended Cannes 2010 and the film has also been to the Fantasia Film Festival, as well. This is director Franck Richard's first feature film and there are many of the film elements here that make French horror so unique. This is a pretty straight forward horror thriller, with one or two clever moments added in, from a clever cop, which creates much of the interesting conflict.

The Pack Trailer has premiered. Franck Richard‘s The Pack / La Meute (2010) Movie stars Yolande Moreau, Émilie Dequenne, Benjamin Biolay, Philippe Nahon, and Brice Fournier. The Pack‘s plot synopsis: “In the middle of a snowy no man’s land, Charlotte picks up Max, a hitchhiker; they stop in a truck-stop restaurant, and when Max doesn’t come back from the bathroom, Charlotte starts looking for him in vain. She decides to return during the night but gets kidnapped by the bartender, La Spack, who turns out to be Max’s mother and needs to feed her kids, ‘The pack’, a bunch of blood lusting ghouls. Charlotte now faces a terrifying reality: these ghouls are already dead… and hungry. Alone and in the middle of nowhere, she quickly realizes… she’s next on the menu!”
This horror movie looks gloriously nuts. One question: What’s in that tube going into Charlotte (Émilie Dequenne)’s mouth?...

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Photoshop killed motion picture promotion. Back in the day, people took their time to create vivid and eye-catching artwork for upcoming movies, a trend that slowly died once digital image manipulation became affordable to the common man. Anyone and their visually-impaired grandparents armed with Photoshop-style software can create a one-sheet in five minutes, as evidenced by George Lucas’ “Star Wars” DVD releases. It saddens me to think that people like Graham Humphreys are being replaced by monkeys jockeying computers. One glance at the artwork for Franck Richard’s “The Pack” is all you need to see the difference. The film is scheduled to hit DVD in the UK on July 4th, 2011, courtesy of Icon Home Entertainment. When will Indomina Releasing allow North American residents to view the film? Right now, I have absolutely no idea. Here’s what the...

Franck Richard's 'The Pack' (Aka 'La Meute') has been picked up by Icon here in the UK and will be receiving a UK-based DVD and Blu-Ray release! And in addition to this great bit of newsage it appears that the Brit horror illustrator Graham Humphreys will be providing the sleeve art (check it out below). Humphreys, as you should know(!), is responsible for some fantastic artwork from some classic horror's such as 'Evil Dead', 'Evil Dead II', 'Basket Case' and a bunch of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' video artwork too (parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). My personal favourite is his 'Evil Dead 2' UK Quad poster which has been attached to my office wall for years! 'The Pack' stars stars Emilie Dequenne (below), Yolande Moreau, Eric Godon, Philippe Nahon, Benjamin Biolay, Brice Fournier and is written as well as helmed by Richard. Check the artwork and trailer below.

To help whet your appetites, a new United Kingdom trailer has become available for this demonic creature feature, which shows many of the sightless and sighted villains.
And this is not one family that you want to dine with, as seen by the clip. Because those invited to La Spack's abode will soon be the main meaty course. God bless Graham Humphreys. Because, sweet lord, that man knows his way around a piece of compelling poster art.Humphreys is the man responsible for what you see to the left, namely the new art for the UK release of Franck Richard's Cannes selected horror film The Pack. The movie's a bit more of a mood piece than the poster implies but, hey, when it looks this good I don't much care. We've been covering this one literally for years now and it's good to finally see it reaching its audience. The UK release is coming up soon, hence the new artwork and the English friendly trailer included below. The Pack follows Charlotte (Emilie Dequenne), a beautiful but rough around the edges kind of girl, who...

The film stars Yolande Moreau, Emilie Dequenne, Eric Godon, Philippe Nahon, and Benjamin Biolay. Its synopsis follows:
The Pack follows Charlotte (Emilie Dequenne), a beautiful but rough around the edges kind of girl, who drives a beat-up station wagon in the countryside of northern France. Her journey takes a turn when she picks up a mysterious hitchhiker (Benjamine Biolay), with whom she strikes an unusual bond. While Indomina Releasing figures out what they want to do with the film, the UK will release Franck Richard's creature feature The Pack on DVD and Blu-ray July 4. Inside you'll find the official UK trailer, new clip, and a piece of incredible new art from Graham Humphreys (A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Evil Dead). "Alone on a road trip, Charlotte (Émilie Dequenne -- 'Brotherhood of the Wolf') stops at the side of an isolated side to pick up a hitchhiker, Max (Benjamin Biolay). But when the pair pulls into a truck-stop restaurant a few miles later, Max goes to the bathroom -- and disappears. Puzzled, Charlotte returns to the restaurant that night to look for him, only to become ensnared by La Spack (Yolande Moreau - 'Amélie', 'Gainsbourg'), the sinister matriarch of a strange and terrifying 'pack'. Before long, Charlotte realises that she is next on the menu.

We’ve been waiting for what seems like an age for some bright spark to drop Franck Richard’s French creature feature La Meute (aka The Pack) onto an English subbed release, and UK picture house Icon have very sensibly stepped up to the plate and are set to release the flick on DVD and Blu-ray. Not only that, it comes with the added bonus of sleeve art by British horror illustrator extraordinaire, Graham Humphreys. Known for his work on classic horror posters including; ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘Evil Dead.’ The newly released UK trailer is below, but be warned its chock full of spoilers, and shows off far too much of the creatures to our mind. We were offered a clip from French horror movie, The Pack a month or two back and it was so freaky that I turned it down. I’ve never done that before but this movie is set to scare the crap out of you! Craig reviewed it when it played at Frightfest last year and you can read his thoughts here.

With a half dozen titles in the sidebars, the Parisian Sales Agent Film Distribution folks are certainly going to be hosting several parties. At the top of the list they've got Bertrand Bonello's House of Tolerance. In the waiting, we find the co. pushing Brillante Mendoza's latest entitled Captured - a film that features a Croisette fixture in the popular Isabelle Huppert (see pic above). Here's a ton of stuff in Film Distribution's pipeline: House Of Tolerance (L'apollonide) by Bertrand Bonello - Completed The Slut by Hagar Ben Asher - Completed The Snows Of Kilimanjaro (Les Neiges Du Kilimanjaro) by Robert GUÉDIGUIAN - Completed 17 Girls (17 Filles) by Delphine Coulin - Completed A Burning Desire by Bernard Jeanjean - Completed A Cat In Paris (English Version) (Une Vie De Chat) by Alain Gagnol - Completed Breathing (Atmen) by Karl Markovics - Completed Duch, Master Of The Forges Of Hell...

Eschewing the Raimi-inspired, bloody splatter approach originally promised when the film was announced, Franck Richard's The Pack has instead opted for a much darker and moodier path. Instead of being a movie about shock and adrenaline - though it features both - it is a movie about tone and dread. And my hunch is it's better off for it.Emilie Dequenne is Charlotte, a beautiful young woman with a bit of an edge to her. We first meet Charlotte on the road, being hounded by a trio of bikers before stopping to pick up a hitchhiker with whom she strikes up a casual conversation. The conversation gets friendlier with perhaps a spark or two between them as the two pull off to eat a roadside...

Check out the strange image from Franck Richard's french horror film The Pack (La Meute). It looks like a feeding tube of some kind but is creepy as hell at thesame time. Philippe Nahon and Yolande Moreau stars in the film that centers upon what happens "in the middle of a snowy no man's land when Charlotte picks up Max, a hitchhiker; they stop in a truck-stop restaurant, and when Max doesn’t come back from the bathroom, Charlotte starts looking for him in vain. She decides to return during the night but gets kidnapped by the bartender, La Spack, who turns out to be Max’s mother and needs to feed her kids, the pack, a bunch of blood-lusting ghouls. With a title like Opstandelsen - Resurrection - you might expect something fresh, innovative or at least uplifting, but this little Danish zombie flick is about as grimly downbeat as they come. Checking off all the classic tropes - a single location, a deeply flawed cast nursing a variety of crippling psychological issues, a group of survivors turning on each other - it clocks in at under an hour, and doesn't suggest there was much left on the cutting room floor. So what makes it memorable nonetheless?
You have to applaud its single-minded purpose, for one. When even other low-budget genre entries spend a great deal of time on scene-setting or side-stories which might have been better dropped from the running time, it's refreshing to sit down with something that charges straight into the apocalypse.

It’s quite alarming seeing the lonely landlady from ‘Amilie’, the cheerful matriarch from ‘MicMacs’, actress Yolande Moreau, as La Spack, a murderous psychopath who lures girls to their doom with the help of her hitchhiker son Max, played with brooding menace by French musician and cool guy Benjamin Biolay. Into their twisted home arrives Charlotte (Émilie Dequenne), a chain smoking punk rock girl taking her own journey through rural France. She picks up Max, undisturbed by his cold gaze, and they share driving duties for a while, before stopping off at La Spack’s truck stop which is run by her iron fist and booted heel. She welcomes them at first, but after a gang of local bikers start a fight she kicks them all out, toting a shotgun and a few creative curse words.
