It's a well-known fact that Iberoamerican cinema, which includes Latin American, Spanish, and Portuguese productions, has had a prominent presence at the most important international film festivals for several years now and several films have been recognized at some of the most important film awards around the world. Colombia's "Embrace of the Serpent" earning the country's first-ever Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category and Argentina's "Wild Tales" taking home the 2016 BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in English Language are juts two examples of recent victories.
Acknowledging the need for a unified industry in the region and a platform for the Iberoamerican industry to honor and support its own productions, the Premios Platino of Iberoamerican Cinema were born three years ago. Each year the organizing committee selects a diverse group of nominees and invites members of the industry across the American continent and the Iberian peninsula to vote in order to select the winners. The ceremony takes place in a different country every year as a way to include all of the varied industries in the process and execution of the event.
This morning, after considering more than 150 films from a pool of over 800 theatrically releases productions, the final nominees were announced by a group of talented actors, including legendary Mexican-American thespian Edward James Olmos, and filmmakers led by CNN en Español's journalist Juan Carlos Arciniegas. Guatemala's Berlin-winning gem "Ixcanul" received 8 nominations, just as Colombia's Oscar-nominated "Embrace of the Serpent" did. These two gorgeously executed works center on indigenous stories and highlight the rich cultural heritage of Latin America. It's a pleasant surprise to see these two fantastic films get the most love.
Chile's "The Club" and Argentina's "The Clan," films by the two most prolific Pablos working in South America, Pablo Larrain and Pablo Trapero, received 6 nominations each. Larrain's dark tale about Catholic priests with questionable pasts was also nominated this year for a Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Perhaps one of the most surprising, yet well-deserved nominations, was the inclusion of Alonso Ruizpalacios among the Best Director nominees for his brilliant debut "Güeros."
Two films distributed by Pantelion received nomations: "600 Miles" and "Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos." Oscilloscope earned 10 mentions with properties "Ma Ma" and "Embrace of the Serpent." Kino Lorber's "Ixcanul, ""Güeros," and "The Pearl Button" also earned the art house distributor 10 nominations.
Regarding the quality of the films being produced in Iberoamerica Egeda's Elvi Cano said, “This has been an exceptional year for Iberoamerican Cinema, with 826 qualifying releases. Iberoamerican Cinema is alive, growing and stronger then ever.” Renowned journalist and host Juan Carlos Arciniegas added," These awards are starting a revolution and it's my dream, as an ambassador for Premios Platino, that these magnificent films that got nominated today to be seen by all our Iberoamerican audiences. I can't be more proud of what our filmmakers are doing today and if the public don't get to enjoy them, we won't be doing our job"
The 3rd Annual Premios Platino of Iberoamerican Cinema will take place on July 24th in Punta del Este, Uruguay

For weeks, fear enveloped Kaufman County, Texas. Two county prosecutors and one of their wives had been killed. People worried that the murders were the work of a criminal gang or a loner bent on revenge - and wondered who, if anyone, might be next. An arrest now brings the case back to one of their own: an elected official who'd been booted from office and allegedly held a grudge against those who helped convict him last year for stealing county property, causing him to lose his job and health benefits, authorities say. Eric Williams, 46, Kaufman County's disgraced former justice of the peace,...

I am honored to be invited to serve on a trade panel and to give a presentation on the world cinema circuit at the upcoming trinidad + tobego film festival, September 19 to October 2. With 120 films from 30 countries Shadow and Act has covered this pretty well. t+tff’s full line-up is here.
The industry panels range from New Caribbean Cinema: Guerilla Filmmaking, Acgpag + Guadeloupe Presentation, Canadian High Commission Reception (Canada is being honored for some of the most touching,thought-provoking and well regarded Canadian films of 2011 and 2012, including Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar), Marketing and Distribution in the Global Marketplace, And a bus tour of its two islands Trinidad and Tobago (or of one, I’m not sure).
We all know of Calypso, made famous in the states by Harry Belafonte. The steel drum, chutney and limbo also came from Trinidad, but what else do we know about this island country in the southern Caribbean, just of the coast of Venezuela, south of Granada in the Lesser Antilles, sharing maritime boundaries with other nations including Barbados to the northeast and Guyana to the southeast and Venezuela to the south and west and lying just outside the hurricane belt? It is one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean due to its petroleum, most of which goes to the U.S.
Wikipedia says: The island of Trinidad was a Spanish colony from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1498 to the capitulation of the Spanish Governor, Don José Maria Chacón, on the arrival of a British fleet of 18 warships on 18 February 1797. During the same period, the island of Tobago changed hands between Spanish, British, French, Dutch and Courlander colonizers. Trinidad and Tobago was ceded to Britain in 1802 under the Treaty of Amiens. The country obtained independence in 1962, becoming a republic in 1976. Unlike most of the English-speaking Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago's economy is primarily industrial, with an emphasis on petroleum and petrochemicals.
The inhabitants in 1797 consisted of people of mixed race, Spaniards, Africans, French republican soldiers, retired pirates and French nobility. The total population of Trinidad in 1797 was 17,718, of which 2,151 were of European ancestry, 4,476 were "free blacks and people of color", 10,009 were slaves and 1,082 Amerindians.
In 1797, the British General Sir Ralph Abercromby and his squadron sailed through the Bocas and anchored off the coast of Chaguaramas. The Spanish Governor Chacon decided to capitulate without fighting. Trinidad became a British crown colony, with a French-speaking population and Spanish laws. The conquest and formal ceding of Trinidad in 1802 led to an influx of settlers from England or the British colonies of the Eastern Caribbean.
Trinidad and Tobago gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Eric Williams, a noted Caribbean historian, widely regarded as "The Father of The Nation," was the first Prime Minister; he served from 1956, before independence, until his death in 1981.
Trinidad and Tobago is a republic with a two-party system and a bicameral parliamentary system based on the Westminster System. The head of state of Trinidad and Tobago is the President, currently George Maxwell Richards. The head of government is the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the first female prime minister of the country. The President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of the full membership of both houses of Parliament. The Prime Minister is elected from the results of a general election which takes place every five years.
It is said to be one of the most relaxed and friendly all the Caribbean nations with a wonderful unique population. Lucky me!!

Tonight, in the decisively bad fourth episode of Aaron Sorkin’s wild pitch of a screwball, Will is more than once powerfully rude in denouncing the evils of gossip to his ladyfriends, and, more than once his lectures earn damp feedback—the little liquid smack of a drink thrown in his face.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

The Black List of 2011 continues with the second-half of the list showcasing the screenplays that received the most number of votes.
Remember, this is a list voted on by Hollywood professionals of what they personally believe to be the best unproduced screenplays written in 2011. You might recognize titles for movies that are in development. That's fine by The Black List rules; the only condition that the screenplay must meet is that it's not being filmed within this calendar year. For Black List 2011 selections like Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, that makes it valid for Black List inclusion.
If you've missed the first half of the list you can find it here.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. The 90's R&B group, once known for their soulful hits and club bangers is now wrapped up in a messy legal feud.
Legendary producer and former member of music group Blackstreet, Teddy Riley, has filed a lawsuit against estranged group members for illegal use of the quartet's name, Vibe magazine reports.
But Riley isn't taking on all his bandmates alone. According to the lawsuit, Teddy Riley, who reportedly owns the Blackstreet trademark, also filed with co-owner and group member Chauncey Hannibal. The pair have held rights to the name since 1992.
In the lawsuit, Riley and Hannibal alleged that Mark Middleton and Eric Williams have booked themselves for performances and used the name without permission since 2003. Adding to its already stuffed popular “Real Wives Of…” series, VH1 is prepping a new half-hour reality TV series based on the world of NBA wives.
Basketball Wives, as it will be called, received an eight-episode order, and will reportedly focus on the “glamour, as well as the jealousy and emotional concerns of being married to NBA greats.”
Executive producer Shaunie O’Neal, recently separated from 15-time NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal, leads a cast that also includes these other basketball wifeys: Mesha O’Neal (wife of Jermaine O’Neal), Evelyn Lozada (ex-fiance of Antoine Walker) and Jennifer Williams (wife of Eric Williams).
The series debuts on March 15, 2010.
*Shaking my head and sighing* Although, given the success of previous Wives shows, I’m sure this will do well.

We just discovered from the VH1 network that they are preparing to launch a new series, patterned almost exactly after The Atlanta Housewives, titled Basketball Wives. It seems as if this is the new genre now, after the success and spin-offs of all of the Housewives titled shows.
Anyway, the eight-episode half-hour series will show the wives and girlfriends of players Shaquille O'Neal, Eric Williams, Antoine Walker, Jermaine O'Neal and Udonis Haslem's. (We ask why are girlfriends on the show?)
We also hear that Shed Media is producing the series, with co-star Shaunie O'Neal also earning an executive producer credit, even though we recently discovered that she recently separated from her NBA All-Star husband Shaquille O’Neal. How this will affect the show will remain to be seen since the majority of the show was filmed before the break-up.

The cast will consist of Shaunie O'Neal (wife of Shaquille O'Neal), Jennifer Williams (wife of Eric Williams), Royce Reed (Dwight Reed's baby mother), Evelyn Lozada (ex-fiancee of Antoine Walker), Faith Rain (girlfriend of Udonis Halsem), and Mesha O'Neal (wife of Jermaine O'Neal).
Vh1's exec VP of Programming says that don't expect the glitz and glam of the other housewife shows ala "The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
