Cat Power and Iggy Pop have teamed up for a new cover of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero.”
The cover arrives as a single from an upcoming compilation album titled The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, organized by In The Q Records, Bandbox, and the Women of Rock Oral History Project to help raise funds for Faithfull as she “recovers from Long Covid.” Thus, the version of the song that Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Pop have delivered pays homage to Faithfull’s 1979 version of the song, with a driving beat and an ambient sense of tension.
Overtop, Marshall’s multi-tracked vocals carry Lennon’s powerful words, while Pop dips in throughout with spoken word lines, sounding almost like a late-career Leonard Cohen, proclaiming a solemn truth with a low, commanding growl. Listen to the single below.
In a statement, Marshall expressed her excitement to be part of the project.

Iggy Pop, Shirley Manson, and Cat Power are a few of the artists who’ve contributed to The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, an upcoming covers compilation honoring the legendary English singer. Before it’s out in full December 8th, Tanya Donelly & The Parkington Sisters have shared their rendition of “This Little Bird.”
Also featuring fellow icons like Peaches, Lydia Lunch, Bush Tetras, Donita Sparks, and more, The Faithful is a benefit album that hits especially close to home: All profits will go directly to assist Faithfull as she recovers from long Covid. Donnelly and the Parkingtons do their forebear justice with their cover of “This Little Bird,” with layered vocal harmonies and delicate, complex string arrangements.
“Marianne’s voice has always been one of my favorite instruments, from childhood through today, and her music and spirit have been life-long inspirations,” Donnelly says in a press release. “I wanted...

Two years ago, Marianne Faithfull told Rolling Stone about her ongoing battle with Covid-19. “It’s terrible,” she said. “I got long-term Covid, where you get better from the virus, but you have leftover [symptoms]. Apparently, they now think that you do get better from long-term Covid; it’s not forever. That is good.”
To help Faithfull with mounting health costs, more than a dozen artists have recorded covers of songs for a benefit album, The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, for her. Cat Power and Iggy Pop teamed to...

L7 are back with “Cooler Than Mars,” a protest song of sorts bemoaning the effects of climate change and the negligence of those with the power to actually do something about it.
More specifically, “Cooler Than Mars” is a tongue-in-cheek callout to the ultra-rich, who seem more concerned about colonizing outer space than ensuring Earth will still be around for their grandchildren. “I’ve got nothin’ against Mars/ But nothin’ wants to live on Mars,” vocalist Donita Sparks declares over uptempo, roaring synths.
“The song was inspired by the ongoing catastrophic news of climate change, and the strange passions of billionaire space cowboys to explore and exploit the outer limits of our stratosphere,” Sparks explains in a statement. “Seems to me such obsessions and resources should be totally focused on healing The Big Blue Marble. I feel like there is nothing ‘out there’ that is as mind-blowing as the biodiversity...

Mvd Entertainment Group has picked up the North American distribution rights to the darkly comedic thriller Wrong Reasons, which was executive produced by and features Kevin Smith. The company is planning to give Wrong Reasons a digital, VOD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 15th.
Coming our way from AntiCurrent Productions, the film marks the feature writing and directorial debut of Josh Roush, who has been working for Smith’s company Smodco for the last decade. The story Roush crafted for his film begins as an ambiguously intentioned masked man kidnaps a drug addicted punk rock singer and triggers a police investigation headed by Detective Charles Dobsonas well as a media circus.
The punk rock singer is played by Liv Roush (Holidays), who also produced the film. James Parks (From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money) is the masked man and Ralph Garman (Ted) is Detective Dobsonas. Their co-stars...

The Word was a magazine-style entertainment show that ran from 1990 to 1995 on the UK’s Channel 4. It was helmed by Mancunian motormouth Terry Christian and a medley of once and future stars, including Amanda de Cadenet, Dani Behr, Katie Puckrik, and Mark Lamarr. The show was the brainchild of Charlie Parsons and Terry Christian, who were tasked with filling the hip, cultural hole left behind by the departure of music-oriented, youth-skewed shows like The Tube.
The Word began life in August 1990 as a tame, tea-time shadow of the fearlessly innovative show it would later become. What saved it from becoming a real-life version of Nozin’ Aroun’ – the spoof youth show so insufferably condescending it prompted Rik to destroy his TV set in the anarchic 1980’s BBC sitcom The Young Ones – was the decision by Channel 4’s Chief Executive Michael Grade to shift transmission from 6pm to late-night. Howie Pyro, a founding member of New York City punk band D Generation, pioneering party DJ, and avid collector of music and movie ephemera, died Wednesday. He was 61. Pyro had undergone a liver transplant last year and was recovering in a Los Angeles hospital. Jesse Malin, Pyro’s friend and bandmate in D Generation, confirmed his death from Covid-related pneumonia following a long battle with liver disease.
Pyro was an integral yet unassuming fixture of New York’s gritty punk scene in the Seventies and Eighties, part groundbreaking artist and part observer.

Most pictures are worth a thousand words. The shot of Lydia Lunch that graces the poster of her documentary, Lydia Lunch: The War Is Never Over, is worth a thousand and one atom bombs. It’s a famous Annie Sprinkle snapshot of her from 1986. The singer/provocateur/punk rock O.G. is facing slightly away from the camera. She’s sporting red hair and even redder lipstick, clad in a similarly colored brassiere and spandex skirt — everything falls somewhere on spectrum between firetruck and candy-apple. Her head is tilted back,...

After Foo Fighters opened their two-song set with Medicine at Midnight’s “Making a Fire,” the lights turned down and the soundstage suddenly transformed into a discotheque, with drummer Taylor Hawkins and the band’s trio of backup singers sharing vocals on the funky and faithful take on the 1978 smash single.

The shorthand summary of the story of Suzi Quatro story is simple: a pioneering female rock ‘n’ roll musician from Detroit who became a big star overseas in the 1970s but couldn’t find the same appreciation at home. And “Suzi Q,” a film by Liam Firmager that premieres on VOD this week, tries to right that imbalance, trotting out an array of female musicians to testify about Quatro’s importance in helping establish the very idea that it was Ok for women to pick up instruments and play rock alongside the guys.
That’s a worthy goal for the film, given Quatro’s influence on people like Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, the Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth and the Go-Go’s Kathy Valentine, among others. Valentine, for one, said she’d never even thought of women playing instruments — and then she saw Quatro on the British TV show “Top of the Pops,...

Cash Music, a Portland-based nonprofit designed to provide “open-source tools to artists looking to promote and sell their music online,” is shutting down after 12 years, it announced today. Co-founded in 2008 by Throwing Muses’ singer Kristen Hersh, L7’s Donita Sparks and Jesse von Doom, the organization’s three major components — artist tools, a blog and the Cash Music Revolving Fund — will all cease operations on July 10.
“There will be a longer post-mortem later from the org and likely a few of us as individuals,” the statement reads. “We are proud of what we were able to accomplish, frustrated by some of the things we weren’t, but thankful for all of you. Our community is so special.”

Grunge stalwarts L7 unveiled a new cover of Joan Jett’s 1983 track “Fake Friends,” featuring guitar and vocals from none other than Jett herself.
For their rendition of “Fake Friends,” L7 flattened out the boogie-tinged skip of the original and streamlined it into a snarling ripper. “Losing friends, losing friends,” Donita Sparks sings, with Jett providing the harmonies, “You got nothing to lose/You don’t lose when you lose fake friends.”
“To have Joan’s vocals on this track along with mine is super surreal and cool,” Sparks said in a statement.

“Suzi Q,” a documentary about Suzi Quatro, who preceded Joan Jett onto the scene in the early ’70s as a leather-clad rock pioneer, has been picked up for North America by Utopia. The company will give the rock doc a one-night theatrical release July 1, followed by digital and DVD distribution two days later.
A U.S. premiere has been set for the Sonoma International Film Festival on March 29, where Quatro will make an appearance. The film already opened last fall in the UK and Australia, two territories where Quatro, a Detroit native, had her biggest chart successes.
Besides interviewing Quatro herself, filmmakers Liam Firmager and Tait Brady also sought out contemporaries like Alice Cooper and female musicians who felt Quatro’s impact, including Deborah Harry, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie of the Runaways, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go’s, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads and Donita Sparks of L7.

It’s been two decades since L7’s last album — long enough for the grunge-punk heroes to add plenty of new names to their already expansive shitlist. We may never get to “Stadium West,” but L7 is all about the neurotic, chaotic journey – not the destination. In their new video, directed by Rob Sheridan, the camera follows the mischievous grunge rockers like a security van careening through the streets of Los Angeles at night just to keep up. The band head-bangs in a parking lot, their bodies radiating iridescent as if the camera’s picking up their heat. Then they plug in on a cramped balcony overlooking desert scrub. The camera teeters, zoning in on the four members.

L7 first came together about 19 hours south of Seattle, in Los Angeles, in 1985. When Rolling Stone ranked the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums earlier this week, L7 notched two LPs on the list: 1990’s metal-punk hybrid Smell the Magic (its “Shove” could serve as a genre blueprint) and its 1992 follow-up, Bricks Are Heavy, which is home to the hit “Pretend We’re Dead...

At the Sir Studio in West Hollywood Monday night, a panel discussion of punk-rock icons devolved into filth and fury — what better way to honor the Epix network’s new docuseries, Punk, which premieres on March 11th? At the heart of the disruption was John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten). The Sex Pistol sparred with Marky Ramone and Henry Rollins while the genre’s other icons watched with smirks and wide eyes.
