CBS has opted not to renew the Chuck Lorre-produced comedy series B Positive for a third season, Deadline has learned. The decision follows the cancellation last night of another Lorre-produced sophomore CBS comedy series, United States Of Al. Both had been heavily on the bubble but, given Lorre’s standing as the network’s top comedy producer of the last two decades, there was an expectation that at least one of the two shows may make the cut for next season.
Lorre will still have multiple series on CBS next season; The Big Bang Theory offshoot Young Sheldon and Bob ♥ Abishola both have been renewed, the former as part of a multi-year pickup.

Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.

In the fifth episode of Showtime’s “Your Honor,” Judge Michael Desiato (Bryan Cranston) finds his family dog unresponsive in his home and rushes him to the vet, telling them to do whatever they have to to save him. It is a moment of selflessness, serving to remind the audience that he has redeeming qualities, and is a good person at heart, despite the fact that for the last four episodes he has gone so far to cover up a hit-and-run his son committed that another teenager took the fall and his family has been destroyed because of it.

The fall calendar this year looks a bit different than in years past thanks to Covid-19. Because of the global pandemic and the slow return to filming, networks are scrambling to fill the gaps, and some are holding their biggest shows for mid-season or sometime next year in order to avoid abrupt endings where production was stopped. Other networks have taken to purchasing foreign imports or utilizing canceled streaming shows and repackaging them into new premieres for an audience that passed them by the first time. Either way, television audiences will be taking a new approach to must-see TV this fall and we’re detailing when your favorite series is set to return. We will update this post as season premiere dates are announced:

When most people get too drunk, they might do an embarrassing dance or text someone they know they really shouldn’t be texting. When Gina (Annaleigh Ashford) gets too drunk, however, she becomes “Becky,” an enthusiastic hellion who ruins weddings, falls out of windows and, in a moment of enlightened benevolence, offers up her kidney to some guy she vaguely knew in high school. That she doesn’t back off that offer once she wakes up (relatively) sober says a lot about Gina as a person beyond her wildness — and yet at least in its first two episodes, “B Positive” has some trouble realizing that there’s a lot more to Gina than it often allows.

A successful sitcom boils down to two things: characters and chemistry. Even the most inspired premise doesn’t matter after the first few episodes, if the show doesn’t have characters we care about and actors who work well together. Case in point: CBS’ new fall sitcom B Positive, debuting this Thursday, Nov. 5 at 8:30/7:30c. (I’ve seen the first two episodes.) It has an admittedly odd premise and does fall into certain CBS sitcom pitfalls along the way, but it’s redeemed by stars Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford, who make a stellar comedic duo right away.

Following the end of 2.5 Men, Patterson and fellow 2.5 Men co-showrunner Don Reo created The Ranch, which became the first Netflix-produced multi-camera comedy series that introduced a new model producing 20 episodes a year that air in two batches. The series, ran by Patterson and Reo, was a solid hit for the streamer and ran for four seasons, completing 80 episodes.

Exclusive: Young actress Maggie Elizabeth Jones (Ben and Kate) has been cast as one of the leads of CBS’ new Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy series B Positive, headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford.
Jones has joined the series in a recasting; a different teen actress played the role in the James Burrows-directed B Positive pilot, the only 2020 broadcast pilot that was completed before the coronavirus-related production shutdown started in mid-March.
Created by Pennette, B Positive is about a therapist and newly divorced dad (Middleditch) who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past (Ashford) who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.
Jones plays Maddie. Wise beyond her years, Maddie acts as a parent to her parents Drew (Middleditch) and Julia (Sara Rue), who are divorced.

While Fox and The CW have already announced the bulk of their returning scripted series have been pushed to 2021, CBS is taking a different approach.
The network on Tuesday unveiled its Fall 2020 schedule, and it includes 20 returning series, meaning that the network is eyeing production restarts for its shows in the coming months.
Most fall dramas typically return to production in July, but with increased social distancing measures being put in place, it's unclear whether episodes will take longer to produce once stay-at-home orders are lifted.
Still, it seems a bit much to assume all of the CBS series will be ready for the fall.
The network is planning a relatively stable schedule, with Monday and Tuesday unchanged vs. last fall.
Wednesdays will find Survivor back in the game, paired with the long-delayed The Amazing Race. Seal Team will, once again, air in the 10 pm slot.

CBS has been the most proactive among the Big 3 networks in making decisions on pilots coming off a 2020 pilot season decimated by the coronavirus pandemic. It has made calls on five projects, picking up three to series, The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah, Silence of the Lambs sequel Clarice starring Rebecca Breeds; and the Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy B Positive, headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford; while passing on two, drama The Lincoln Lawyer, which had a series production commitment, and comedy Fun.
B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot this season, as the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown hit just as most pilots were getting ready to start filming.

Any other year, CBS’ 2020-21 schedule would be considered very conservative, with three nights left intact and the other three undergoing only minor changes, including adding two new series, drama The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah and Chuck Lorre comedy B Positive, and holding S.W.A.T. for midseason.
But in the year of Covid-19, this could be considered a risky schedule, as all entertainment series in CBS’ fall lineup, except for The Amazing Race installment already in the can, are yet to be filmed with restart of Hollywood production still in limbo. CBS’ fall schedule is in stark contrast with the other two broadcast lineups announced so far, as both Fox and the CW relied predominantly on already produced content, including acquisitions, for fall, pushing the launch of their regular rosters to January and beyond.

CBS has picked up three new series for next season: The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah, Silence of the Lambs sequel Clarice starring Rebecca Breeds; and the Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy B Positive headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford. The dramas have received straight-to-series orders, while B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot this season, which was decimated by the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown. Despite the coronavirus shutting down production on the majority of pilot season, CBS ordered three new series for next season, including its “Silence of the Lambs” sequel from Alex Kurtzman and Queen Latifah’s reboot of “The Equalizer.”
Additionally, the network ordered its latest series from uber-producer Chuck Lorre in “B Positive,” which stars “Silicon Valley” alum Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford about a therapist who becomes friends with his kidney donor.
The “Silence of the Lambs” sequel — titled “Clarice” — will follow Clarice Starling six months after the events of the movie. Rebecca Breeds takes over the role famously played by Jodie Foster in the 1991 movie. “The Equalizer” will see Queen Latifah step into the role played by Edward Woodward in CBS’ 1980s version, and more famously by Denzel Washington in a pair of movies.
Earlier this week, CBS renewed 18 series for next year.

CBS has made three series pick ups for the 2020-2021 season.
On the drama side, CBS has ordered the “Equalizer” reboot starring Queen Latifah and “Clarice,” which follows Clarice Starling in the aftermath of “The Silence of the Lambs.” On the comedy side, the network has picked up the multi-cam “B Positive,” which hails from Chuck Lorre.
The shows mark the first shows that were going through the normal pilot season process to get picked up for next season. Nearly all pilots were unable to complete filming before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a suspension of prodution. “B Positive” was one of the only pilots to complete filming before that happened. CBS had originally ordered 14 pilots this season, with both drama “The Lincoln Lawyer” and comedy “Fun” having been passed over in the past week.
CBS renewed the vast majority of its scripted lineup earlier this week, with 23 current shows now set to return next season.

It’s April, the month when Deadline usually launches its Pilot Panic feature, where we track buzz on the broadcast pilots as they go through production and testing.
This year, there is no pilot production or testing, there actually isn’t much of anything typically associated with pilot season besides the panic, which has been setting in — and growing — as the coronavirus pandemic rages on.
Over the past month and a half, pilot season has been suspended, and upfront presentations have been canceled. Yet, we could somehow potentially end up in a quasi-normal situation, with the broadcast networks...

The ongoing coronavirus health crisis is giving broadcast pilot season a jolt that might be felt long after the global pandemic is over.
Following the unprecedented Hollywood shutdown over the Covid-19 outbreak, which left all but one broadcast pilot in limbo, I hear the networks have ordered at least one backup script each for almost all of their projects. Writing is one of very few things that can be done during the shutdown — individually or via virtual writers rooms — and the networks are using that to move the development process further. I hear ABC, NBC, Fox and the CW have ordered a second script for all their drama and comedy pilots, with ABC picking up more than one script on some projects. I hear CBS has commissioned a second script for most of its pilots.
As Deadline reported last week, with no end of the pandemic in sight, the broadcast networks likely were going to reassess their pilot slates, with some projects possibly going straight to series.
There were several high-profile drama pilots that already were on a series-pickup track before the pandemic hit the U.S., with writers rooms set up, including CBS’ The Lincoln Lawyer and ABC’s Rebel. (CBS’ Clarice had a mini room set up to break stories for the pilot.)
The rest of the pilots currently are producing backup script(s).
The broadcast networks have not yet unveiled what the next step in the process would be, but I hear some still are hoping to make their crops of pilots. They are using the down time to have a second episode written so the pilots that did get picked up to series hit the ground running.
Coronavirus: TV Shows That Have Halted Or Delayed Production Amid Outbreak
Other sources suggest that the projects with the strongest pilot and backup scripts might get permission to open a writers room and start working on follow-up scripts to be considered for a straight-to-series order.
That would bring broadcast TV in line with the streaming development model — something the networks had been flirting with, but the pull of the traditional pilot cycle had been too hard to break from.
If the trial-by-necessity is successful, we could see the broadcast development model shift away from pilots toward straight-to-series orders, especially for dramas, which are more expensive to pilot, and where having a strong plot and mythology is key vs. comedy pilots, where cast chemistry — something that pilots are great tests for — is paramount.
I hear the backup script strategy also is being used by cable and streaming networks that employ a pilot model for their pilots that had been shut down by the coronavirus crisis.
There is a possibility that some broadcast pilots won’t be made. I hear that complex conversations with studios, producers and unions are underway as to who will be paid if a pilot that had been greenlighted, staffed and cast is not produced. If the current health emergency goes on for more than eight weeks, networks and studios could enforce force majeure provisions to not honor deals, but there are important talent relationships involved in many of the projects, so amicable resolution may be a more prudent way out of a difficult situation.
As Deadline reported last week, out of about 55 broadcast pilots (excluding straight-to-series orders), only one has been completed: the CBS/Wbtv multi-camera comedy B Positive, from Chuck Lorre and Marco Pennette. The project starring Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford already had been garnering strong early buzz.
A handful of other pilots have filmed partial pilots, some of them close to completion: the CW/Wbtv’s Kung Fu; a couple of NBC pilots, including Ordinary Joe starring James Wolk; Fox/Lionsgate comedy This Country, based on the British format; and the CW/Wbtv drama The Lost Boys, a reimagining of the cult classic movie.
Additionally, a number of projects — including Fox’s Call Me Kat, ABC’s The Big Sky, NBC’s La Mayor and Young Rock and the CW’s Superman & Lois and Walker — have straight-to-series orders and have writers rooms going. Most of them were planning to film a pilot episode during pilot season, take a break to assess it before starting series production. They will now go straight to series production.

“Silicon Valley” star Thomas Middleditch will play the lead role in Chuck Lorre’s latest comedy pilot for CBS “B Positive.”
The project centers on Drew (Middleditch), a newly divorced dad who is faced with finding a kidney donor. Annaleigh Ashford has been tapped as the female lead in B Positive, CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot from the Mom team of Marco Pennette, Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. TV.
Ashford’s casting involved a complex logistical puzzle and the will to make it happen of two top TV showrunners, Lorre and Ryan Murphy. She co-stars as Paula Jones in Murphy’s Impeachment: American Horror Story, which films concurrently with B Positive. To make her new gig possible, the pilot production start date was pushed, and her dates on FX’s Impeachment were adjusted. There wasn’t a lot of wiggle room as Tony Award winner Ashford is scheduled to segue into the London production of Sunday in the Park with George opposite Jake Gyllenhaal later in the spring.
