Exclusive: “Anyone expecting a polite, apologetic version of Survivor will be completely surprised,” the EP behind the BBC’s rebooted reality series has proclaimed.
Speaking to Deadline a few days prior to launch, reality TV vet Paul Osborne said Survivor’s producers have leaned into high-production values and high-stakes gameplay in a similar vein to the U.S. team behind the Emmy-winning CBS smash, which has run for 45 seasons and 650 episodes over two decades.
“It feels a long time coming,” Osborne said of the UK version, which is hosted by Masked Singer presenter Joel Dommett and launches on Saturday. “I’m hugely excited to see how the audience responds to British gameplay which they might not necessarily expect. Anyone expecting a polite, apologetic version of Survivor will be completely surprised.”

The 16-episode season “promises viewers a compelling test of brains, brawn and betrayal as players compete to outwit, outplay and outlast their rivals to be crowned the Ultimate Survivor,” the BBC said in summarizing the format’s tried and tested formula. “Twenty people, carefully selected from across the U.K. will be marooned in a tropical location. The BBC is rebooting hit reality series “Survivor.” The show last appeared on U.K. screens in 2001 and 2002, when it aired on ITV for two seasons.
The new adaptation, which will be produced by Banijay U.K.-owned Remarkable Entertainment, will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
It is the latest in a series of high-profile unscripted reboots from the BBC, following “Gladiators” and “The Osbournes: Home to Roost.”
The 16-episode season promises physical and psychological challenges for 20 contestants, who must compete in a tropical location to be crowned the Ultimate Survivor.
The show works by dividing the competitors into two tribes, who will go head to head for each challenge. Eliminations will take place throughout the show until the tribes merge and one person emerges victorious.
More information – including the host and TX date as well as casting details – is set to be announced soon.

“Claim to Fame” is a different type of series for Kinetic Content, a company best known for “Love Is Blind” and “The Ultimatum,” both on Netflix. But the lighthearted competition show — which premieres Monday on ABC — couldn’t have come at a better time.
“It’s an idea that makes you smile and taps into a pop culture confection: celebrity, mystery and gameplay. It’s a really fun show to watch and to play along with,” executive producer and Kinetic CEO Chris Coelen tells Variety.
The series, hosted by Kevin and Frankie Jonas, follows 12 celebrity relatives living under one roof and attempting to conceal their famous family. They will compete in challenges and form alliances while trying to avoid elimination and win the coveted 100,000 prize.
Coelen, Eric Detwiler and Scott Teti serve as executive producers. Paul Osborne serves as the showrunner and executive producer, while Brian Smith serves as director and executive producer.

Stormy Daniels and Kirstie Alley are reported to be among the celebrity participants in the new season of Channel 5’s “Big Brother” in the U.K., which starts Thursday.
British tabloid The Sun cited unnamed sources Monday confirming an “official lineup” of 13 contestants on the show, including Daniels, the former porn star who was allegedly paid off to keep quiet about a sexual encounter with Donald Trump. “Stormy is the biggest signing for this year’s show and she’ll make headlines around the world,” The Sun quoted a source as saying.
On Tuesday, Channel 5 would neither confirm nor deny the participation of Daniels or “Cheers” actress Alley, or the rest of The Sun’s reported lineup. A spokesperson told Variety the names were not official and represented the newspaper’s “amalgamation of speculated names.” The contestants will officially be unveiled at Thursday night’s premiere.

Stormy Daniels, the porn star who claims to have had an affair with Donald Trump, and Cheers actress Kirstie Alley are some of the star names set to appear on the British version of Celebrity Big Brother as Viacom-owned broadcaster Channel 5.
The show, which is produced by Endemol Shine-backed Initial Productions, launches Thursday August 16. The network is theming this summer’s reality hit as The Eye of The Storm and is introducing housemates that have all been caught up in their own media controversies.
British tabloid The Sun reports that Daniels, real name Stephanie Clifford, is the show’s major get. The President of the United States of America will be hoping that the adult film star doesn’t reveal too much more during a possible reality TV stint.
She is reportedly joined by Scientologist Alley, who recently starred on Scream Queens.

Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha Markle is reportedly being lined up to appear on the British version of Celebrity Big Brother as Viacom-owned broadcaster Channel 5 eyes a controversial theme.
The network is theming this summer’s reality hit as The Eye of The Storm and is expected to introduce housemates that have all been caught up in their own media controversies.
The entrance of Samantha Markle, otherwise known as Samantha Grant, would make perfect sense given her controversial views leading up to her half-sister’s wedding to Prince Harry. It emerged that she was responsible for setting up Markle’s father’s staged paparazzi photos and has also appeared on a number of British TV shows including Loose Women and Good Morning Britain, with Piers Morgan, to suggest that Harry would been better off marrying someone else.

Back when interracial marriage was a shady topic (are those dark days coming back?) the U.S. military had some adjustment issues. Full integration of the ranks didn’t remove the anti- Japanese bigotry. James Michener’s novel has been transformed into a big-scale romance, with Marlon Brando coming to terms with a split in loyalty between the flag and his private life. The big shock is that the Paul Osborn’s screenplay doesn’t let the military off easy.

The news is not an ideal start to the year for Eye Corp’s new owner Outdoor Media Operations, which bought the company from Ten at the end of last year.
Apn plans to upgrade the terminal’s media with a digital network made up of free-standing LCD sites and video walls hosted on cloud serving software.

If you take a statistics class (or just take your fantasy baseball team really seriously), one of the first things you learn is that trends are largely a myth. When a team like the Red Sox starts the season 2-13, that’s probably nothing more than a few bad breaks strung together. Given enough time, they’ll right the ship. Unless their third starter is John Lackey. Then all bets are off. Our brains are wired to see patterns where none exist, to take statistical noise and turn it into something it isn’t (there’s a joke in there somewhere about movie critics, but I’ll leave it alone).
So when I work two films in a row where the director is also serving as the d.p. and camera operator — does that mean that there’s this great movement brewing on the West Coast? Of course not. Two...

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.

ABC today announced its scheduling plans for new reality series Secret Millionaire, confirming Deadline's story from October. Secret Millionaire will premiere on Sunday, March 6, taking over the Sunday 8 Pm slot regularly occupied by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for a six-weeks. Emhe will return in the time period with original episodes on April 17. Secret Millionaire's premiere is timed to the Academy Awards, ABC's highest-rated annual telecast, which airs the previous Sunday and is expected to heavily promote Secret Millionaire. CBS' similarly-themed Undercover Boss benefited from launching behind that network's top-rated telecast last season, the Super Bowl. Based on the hit British series, the Zodiak USA-produced Secret Millionaire follows successful U.S. business people who spend a week in the country’s poorest areas and at the end of their stay reveal their true identity and give deserving people in the community hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money. Chicago – ABC continues to look for another “Lost” or “Modern Family” this fall with seven new shows announced today at their 2010 upfronts presentation. The network will see changes on four nights of the week but will bring back the sometimes on-the-bubble “Castle” in its Monday night timeslot while saying goodbye to “FlashForward,’ “Scrubs,” and “Better Off Ted”.
Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, said this morning via press release, “Our passion for great storytelling is at the core of everything we do. Finding and supporting writers, directors, producers and actors who share that passion is critical to our success. Our shows are the product of these collaborations, and we are thrilled to add 10 new series to our schedule next year.” (Seven will premiere in the fall with three more reserved for midseason.)

We have been following the awesome documentary “Official Rejection” for quite a few months now. We brought you one of the very first reviews of the film and a very detailed 5 part audio interview with filmmaker Paul Osborne. We are also gearing up to bring you a very cool contest based on the film that I will announce soon.
I was talking with Paul yesterday and he mentioned that he was about to release a new video promoting the film. I took a look at it and knew it was something I had to post on here. Indie film icon Lloyd Kaufman is one of the (very lively) interview subjects of the film. When ‘Official Rejection’ played the deadCENTER film festival, Lloyd Kaufman went to go see it for the first time. Here is a little video of Lloyd’s reaction.

New York City’s VisionFest 09, which bills itself as “The Other Festival,” takes place June 17-21 at Tribeca Cinemas (54 Varick St.), and like any self-respecting film event, it has some scares in its lineup. The most notable will be the NYC premiere of Blood River, the latest feature from Broken and The Devil’S Chair’s Adam Mason.
Blood River revolves around a couple whose seemingly perfect marriage begins to unravel after they suffer a blowout while driving through the desolate Nevada desert. They come upon an abandoned town, and a mysterious stranger who begins to deconstruct their lives even more. The movie screens on Friday, June 19 (accompanied by two shorts) at 9:30 p.m.
Serving as the opening-night attraction on Wednesday, June 17 at 8 p.m. is Dominic Perez’s feature debut Evil Things. This indie chiller (which we first told you about here) follows five college students whose weekend...
