In the world of movies and TV shows, there are countless adaptations that have been made from popular novels and biographical works. But these forms of entertainment have also been inspired by and adapted from some of the biggest video games, which don't get nearly as much attention as they should. In 2023, HBO's acclaimed series "The Last of Us," based on the Sony action-adventure game franchise of the same name, broke viewership records and became the most-watched show in the history of the streaming platform in Europe and Latin America, per the Associated Press.
Along with television series, video-game-to-movie adaptations have also grown in popularity among audiences, with the star-studded "The Super Mario Bros." movie, adapted from the beloved game franchise by Nintendo, being the second-highest grossing film of 2023 so far, as reported by Insider. The film, which features voice acting from stars like Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black,...

Last weekend, we saw the end of the Indiana Jones franchise as Harrison Ford has stated that The Dial Of Destiny is the last time he’ll don the fedora and whip. Well, it will be the franchise’s end unless Disney decides to squeeze every last drop they can out of it, which is never out of the question. When the film hits screens, we’ll be seeing Indy for the last time. Film fans always need something else to fill in their viewing void, so what are the best movies like Indiana Jones?
Uncharted (2022)

Hatchet for the Honeymoon doesn’t behave like other gialli. This Italian-Spanish movie does something unconventional at the beginning; the identity of the killer is revealed to the audience. It goes against tradition to spoil the mystery so early, but after feeling restrained while working under producer Dino De Laurentiis only a year earlier, director Mario Bava sought a fresh start in 1968. This almost forgotten movie was that creative reset, though it wouldn’t be until years later that everyone better appreciated this late entry in Bava’s unique oeuvre.

“Uncharted” is based on the popular video game series published by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation family of consoles. It stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan, adventurers on a quest for a very big score. And it’s the kind of giant Hollywood production that is so full of twists and turns that the thrills don’t stop when the movie is over, but rather spill over into the closing credits.
That’s right – X might mark the spot, but it certainly isn’t the end of the journey.
TheWrap got to chat with “Uncharted” director Ruben Fleischer and during the conversation brought up the pair of post-credits sequences, including casting insights, scrapped ideas, and additional details.

Tom Holland has proven a charming actor, capable of poignancy, humor, and super-heroic action. Stretching beyond his work as Spider-Man, he detoured into an adaptation of the Uncharted video game, coming off more as a cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond than an original character, which is not at all his fault. He is an appealing performer and you want to root for him to succeed.

"Uncharted" has finally arrived in theaters, and fans are already pointing out the major differences between the film and the video-game series it's based on. Starring Tom Holland as Nate Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, the movie is filled with action, adventure, and, of course, a treasure hunt.
Considering there are nine Uncharted games in existence, it only makes sense that this movie had to cut some things out and change around a few plot points. While there are a number of differences between the games and the movie, these are the biggest ones you should know.
Nate Drake Is Much Younger in the Movie
In the movie, Nate's character is roughly 25 years old, which is way younger than the Nate in the Uncharted games. Because there are multiple games in the series that take place over several years, the video-game character is considerably older than the movie version.

When actor Sophia Ali stepped into the shoes of Chloe Frazer, a fearless, badass treasure hunter in “Uncharted,” she felt unstoppable.
“I’m surprised I fit into rooms to be honest. I was on such a high,” she told Variety. “I was playing Chloe’s video game [‘Uncharted: The Lost Legacy’] while I was shooting because I wanted it to be special. I genuinely was like, ‘I’m Chloe, nothing can touch me. I’m untouchable.'”
While undergoing daily, eight-hour strength and endurance training for the physical, stunt-heavy role, parts of Chloe stuck with Ali in real life, even in unlikely, everyday situations.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been that strong before. When I had groceries to carry, I wasn’t thinking about ‘Is this going to be heavy? Do I have to come back for two rounds?'” she joked.

“Uncharted,” Sony’s blockbuster video game adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, made $3.7 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,574 locations and screenings that began at 4 p.m. It opens on approximately 4,275 screens this weekend, including IMAX and premium large format locations.
“Uncharted” is an adventure and action film based on the PlayStation video game franchise of the same name from Naughty Dog, and Sony is hoping that the star power of Tom Holland coming off the mega success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will translate into similar box office treasure.
Sony is projecting “Uncharted” to earn $30 million over the four-day President’s Day holiday weekend (as well as $27 million over the three-day) against a $120 million budget. For a comparison to another video game hit, “Sonic the Hedgehog” made $3 million in its previews and opened to $58 million in February 2020. It may seem like a natural transition for Uncharted, one of the most cinematic game franchises in history, to be adapted to the big screen, but the games aren’t just movielike in their presentation; they’re every bit as well-made and entertaining as the Hollywood action movies they pay homage to, if not moreso. Even the games’ protagonist Nathan Drake, voiced by Nolan North, is as charismatic and likable as any movie action hero you could name. So, if the games essentially out-movie the movies they’re based on, why make an Uncharted movie in the first place?
As it turns out, Uncharted, starring Tom Holland as Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his conman mentor Sully, does in fact manage to justify its existence. It isn’t a great action movie, but it is a good one. Despite not being as compelling or polished as the games it’s based on,...

It used to be that video game movies were bad because video games didn’t give movies enough to work with; say what you will about Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton’s “Super Mario Bros.,” but they had to do something to flesh out a story that basically amounted to “Italian stereotype runs from left to right.” Nowadays, in an age when interactive epics are so vast and cinematic that Playstation characters are regularly played by movie stars (and sometimes even modeled to resemble major filmmakers), it seems that video game movies are bad because video games give movies way too much to work with.
No big screen adaptation of “Uncharted” could ever hope to match the globe-trotting, rope-swinging, plane-exploding excitement of Naughty Dog’s massively popular action-adventure franchise, in which professional treasure hunter Nathan Drake scoured the planet in search of priceless artifacts, searched for every corner of the...

In the tradition of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Mummy,” “National Treasure” and “Jumanji,” “Uncharted” taps into a familiar tradition of globe-trotting, roguish adventure, and disguises the influence of those earlier films (and countless others) considerably better than you might expect.
Since making his debut with “Zombieland,” director Ruben Fleischer has developed an aptitude for cheerful proficiency (if not a ton of discernible personality) that he deploys to great effect in this brisk pastiche, especially with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg bickering their way through one set piece after another.
Meanwhile, Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle steal much of the movie from their better-known co-stars with intriguing turns as competitors and more-than-equals for the prize Fleischer keeps tantalizingly out of reach from all of them.

I try to go into every movie with open eyes and an open mind, but I confess that this Buddhist goal can be seriously tested by the prospect of sitting through a video-game movie. Sorry, but I’ve been burned too often — by “Super Mario Bros.”, by “Street Fighter” and “Mortal Kombat” and their sequels, by the 637 “Resident Evil” films, by the operatic death-plunge bombast of “Assassins’ Creed,” which looked like it was adapted from the 100 greatest prog-rock album covers. Are there good video-game movies? I enjoyed the 2018 reboot of “Tomb Raider.” The audiences for these films, who tend to be steeped in the games, would say that any number of them are good. But for those like me, who are looking at the movies as movies rather than live-action adjuncts, there can be a sludgy sameness to them: the kinetic fight-club visuals, the skeletal scripts, the “world-building” that starts...

Following a difficult two years for movie theaters due to the Covid-19 pandemic, things are slowly starting to get back to normal. At the height of the pandemic, several titles were released both in theaters and on streaming services, but as normalcy is resuming, more movies are having exclusive theatrical releases, like "Uncharted." The film, which is based on the Playstation game series of the same name, has a star-studded cast featuring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas and releases exclusively in theaters Feb. 18, 2022.

Let’s offer up a slow clap for the slow-moving films; the ones that want you to lean in and invest a little extra time (or a lot) to get to know the characters better, or weave words and deeds into the fabric of the story to enrich the experience. Sometimes it’s just shitty editing. So it goes; but The Corruption of Chris Miller (1973), a Spanish psychothriller sucker-punched by moments of grisly grandeur, slowly turns to unveil a sordid tale of deception, trust, carnal curiosity, and the occasional striking murder. It moves with deliberation and respect for the tale.
Released at home in May and not hitting Stateside until September of ‘75, The Corruption of Chris Miller received solid reviews for the most part, with critics praising director J.A. Bardem’s (Death of a Cyclist) deft touch with the quiet moments just as much as the explosive violence. Marketed...

Special Mention: Dressed To Kill
Directed by Brian De Palma
Written by Brian De Palma
1980, USA
Genre: Thriller
Brian De Palma’s films, like Tarantino’s, are a cinematic mash-up of influences from the past, and in De Palma case he borrows heavily from Alfred Hitchcock. Obsession is De Palma’s Vertigo, Blow Out his Rear Window, and with Dressed to Kill the director set its sights on Psycho. Dressed To Kill is more thriller than horror but what a stylish and twisted thriller it is! The highlight here is an amazing ten-minute chase sequence set in an art gallery and conducted entirely without dialogue. There are a number of other well-sustained set pieces including a race in the subway system and even, yes, a gratuitous shower murder sequence. Dressed To Kill features an excellent cast (Michael Caine, Nancy Allen, Angie Dickinson), a superb score (courtesy of Pino Donaggio) and...

Rue Morgue Cinema and Someone at the Door Productions are spearheading this endeavor, a remake of the Spanish/Italian grindhouse western Condenados a vivir .
