"Experience the hidden world... where bigger isn't always better." Netflix has released an official trailer for a new docu-drama series titled Tiny Creatures, one of the first projects directed by award-winning nature cinematographer Jonathan Jones. It "magnifies some of the world's smallest wildlife... In every episode, immerse yourself in a different ecosystem and see the drama that unfolds right at our very feet." Nature is so cool! It's not really a documentary, they wanted to tell stories with each of these little animals. "All eight episodes feature tiny creatures facing huge challenges in dramatic new environments. Helped by a team of handlers and trainers, Jonathan used real animals for the stories, and even wrote scripts for them ahead of filming." The series is narrated by Mike Colter and directed by the cinematographer who won an Emmy for "Planet Earth II". I think we're all in need of some wholesome, adorable...

This illuminating documentary portrait details the undimmed curiosity and enthusiasm of the grand old man of British painting
In recent years, David Hockney has become the grand old man of British painting, with a giant touring exhibition, A Bigger Picture, in 2012 and a high profile 2014 documentary called, yes, Hockney. With these in mind, this latest offering from the Exhibition on Screen series is a little more modest, taking its cues from the Bigger Picture show with its revelatory multiframe landscapes and the more recent David Hockney Ra: 82 Portraits and 1 Still Life.
There’s copious interview material with the artist, conducted by a slightly starry-eyed Tim Marlow, along with contributions from the Guardian’s Jonathan Jones. Hockney still seemingly maintains his transnational life, moving backwards and forwards between the Us (where he created seminal works such as A Bigger Splash) and the UK, where his regular driving trips encouraged a new...

Shot over 12 years, this unobtrusive documentary follows the superstar artist as he makes his monumental video installations, Mary and Martyrs, for St Paul’s Cathedral
It will do no good to Bill Viola’s reputation as one of the most important American artists of his generation to be caught in an unguarded moment after a long day’s filming, skipping down a hill yelping: “The best! That was the best of the best!”
This respectful, unobtrusive documentary shot on-and-off over 12 years, follows Viola as he plans and films his crowning glories: Mary and Martyrs, the two monumental video installations on permanent display at St Paul’s Cathedral (described by the Guardian’s Jonathan Jones as “a blast of hi-tech Caravaggio”).

Tonight saw the final Blind Auditions show of The Voice UK, with Rita Ora, Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am all having free spaces on their teams to fill. As for Ricky Wilson - he just enjoyed the performances with a full team behind him.

What started out as a normal day for Cam Newton has quickly taken a turn for the worst as he just crashed his pickup truck in downtown Charlotte. The Carolina Panthers hunk flipped his vehicle sometime after 12:30pm Et and was transported by ambulance to a nearby medical facility.
Thankfully, Charlotte Observer reporter Jonathan Jones was able to surmise that Newton was doing reasonably well after showing up on the scene and observing Cam resting on his elbow and responding to the emergency workers. Jones tweeted a photograph along with the caption, “Cam Newton is conscious and smiling after crash in uptown Charlotte.”...

Jonathan Jones asks whether The Grand Budapest Hotel's 'Boy with Apple' artwork is plausible
The cinema of Wes Anderson is nothing if not mechanical. Watching his movies is less like marvelling at the silent workings of a Swiss watch than goggling at the innards of a grandfather clock, cogs and pulleys proudly displayed. Theatrical framing devices are everywhere, from book bindings to doll's houses to miniature stages and fluctuating screen ratios, with chapter headings a recurrent feature. As for the performances, one imagines that if Anderson were ever to include a "gag reel" of outtakes from his movies, it would include shots of an actor raising an eyebrow a millimetre too high, or placing a teacup an inch to the left of its allotted space upon a table.

Theatrical hell-raisers and the art world's enfants terribles take centre stage in our roundup of the biggest risk-takers of 2014
Theatre
Oh! What a Lovely War
Theatre-maker Joan Littlewood was a visionary, an iconoclast and a subversive. Her 1963 "documentary collage" about the bitter ironies of the first world war was way ahead of its time, using popular period song and hard-hitting testimony. Lyn Gardner Theatre Royal Stratford East, London E15 (020-8534 0310), 1 February to 15 May.
Macbeth
Shakespeare's dark tale as you've never seen it before, taking place in a secret location from dawn to dusk. Party with Duncan, bed down in Macbeth's castle on the 27th floor of a tower block, glimpse the witches in an underground car park, and join the feast at which Banquo will be an uninvited guest. The spectres will be bloody – but the food will be vegetarian. LG Secret location, London, 4 April to 31 May.

Courtney Love's memoir
The question is not so much "what will be in Courtney Love's book?" as "what could possibly be in Courtney Love's book that she hasn't already spoken/ranted/raved about?" Still, her self-titled autobiography has been described as "too crazy not to be true" and should provide her definitive take on her time with Hole and her doomed relationship with Kurt Cobain. It will also, hopefully, spill previously unspilled beans on her relationships with Billy Corgan and Steve Coogan. Oh, and according to an interview she did with Rolling Stone, it was inspired by Russell Brand's My Booky Wook. The mind boggles. Tj

Angelina Jolie takes on Sleeping Beauty while Terry Gilliam tackles Berlioz as the stars come out to confound our expectations in the coming year
Film
Angelina Jolie in Maleficent
Hollywood's most formidable leading lady is back after a relatively quiet spell, in a role playing on her scariness and seniority. This reinvented fairytale is a twist on The Sleeping Beauty, and Jolie is not playing the insipid dormant heroine with her crybaby attitude to finger-pricking but the evilly magnificent Maleficent, the sorceress who casts a spell on the demure young Princess Aurora. How did she get that way? Everything will depend on the script – but Jolie is always a great turn. Peter Bradshaw 30 May.
Natalie Portman in Jane Got a Gun
Natalie Portman is a Hollywood A-lister who first came to prominence in George Lucas's Star Wars prequel trilogy. She was compellingly vulnerable in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan,...

From the world's tallest building to Adele's 'modern jazz'-inspired third album, the big events of 2014 are lining up
Television
True Detective
Crime drama is always looking for new ways of dramatising a murder investigation: one killing investigated over 10 episodes; alternating viewpoints of cops, killer, victims and so on. However, in this ambitious series from HBO, multiple seasons will follow the search for a serial killer in Louisiana over 17 years, with each year introducing a new cast. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are in the first group. Either magnificent or mad. Mark Lawson HBO.
Penny Dreadful
This has a remarkable lineage: it is produced by film and stage director Sam Mendes and John Logan, who wrote Skyfall for Mendes as well as Hugo, The Aviator and Gladiator. Its disadvantage may be the daring concept, in which a number of fictional horror story characters – Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and Dorian Gray – are living in Victorian London.

Today, the Romanian director Tudor Giurgiu announced plans to adapt the story of last year's insane multimillion dollar art theft in the Netherlands for the big screen. In anticipation, we've reprinted our 2012 map of movies the Dutch robbers seem to have studied up on before looting the Kunsthal, from "Ocean's 11" to "Home Alone." Let us know which heist movie you think we're due.
Given its scale and brazenness, this week's major art theft in the Netherlands clearly resembles a movie. But which one? So many genres were crossed -- the robbers come off as both brazen and bumbling, and museum personnel don't fare much better, given how easy it seems to have been to stymie the building's security system.
Luckily, this is a mystery we don't need Politei to solve. Here are the facts: In the early hours of Tuesday morning, one or more persons strategically looted Rotterdam's Kunsthal...

Best known for the 1970 flick Mark of the Devil – a notorious witch-hunt tale controversial (and banned in some areas) for its graphic scenes of torture – director Michael Armstrong has been lured out of retirement to direct the horror film Orphanage, his first feature in over forty years. Orphanage (not to be confused with the 2007 Spanish horror film The Orphanage, produced by Guillermo Del Toro) is based on Armstrong's own screenplay, and will be brought to the screen by Paper Dragon Productions. Paul Horsfield and Jonathan Jones will produce, with Neil Jackson and Kevin James serving as executive producers. Armstrong has gone on record praising the company for allowing him the creative freedom to realize his vision. The plot of Orphanage is still being kept under wraps, being described only as a “psychological suspense shocker.” We'll keep tabs on the production and keep you updated!

It's been about forty years since director Michael Armstrong made a name for himself with the 1970 classic Mark of the Devil, but the man has been lured out of retirement with a spooky new project called Orphanage.
The film, for Paper Dragon Productions, has been written and will be directed by Armstrong. Described as a sociological suspense shocker, a complete veil of secrecy has now been thrown around the project as it heads into immediate development.

If you're vaguely aware that one of the most dramatic art heists in the history of ever just occurred in the Netherlands, but don't know the details, sit right down. Grab some popcorn, and turn off your cell phone, because we're about to play you a movie with words. Where it fits in the vast pantheon of caper movies, we don't yet know. But this, at least, is a mystery we don't need Politei to solve.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, one or more persons strategically looted Rotterdam's Kunsthal Museum of seven of its priciest works, on display in the "Avant Gardes" exhibit: paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Gaugin, Freud, two by Monet, and a self-portrait by the "minor Dutch artist" Meyer de Haan.
In movie thief terms, this lands us somewhere between the "Ocean's Elevens" crew and Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci in "Home Alone" -- brazen, but prone to goof-ups.

Tom Jones's estranged son from a brief relationship has reached out to his father. In 1987, the Welsh singer had a short romance with model Katherine Berkery, who gave birth to son Jonathan Jones Berkery not long after. Jones agreed to pay child support for his son, but refused to meet him, claiming he was "trapped" by Katherine Berkery. Jonathan, now 23 years old, has spoken out to The Sun to plead for a chance to meet his father. "When I tell people who my dad is, they think I'm faking. All I want is to meet him once. Just to hear him say my name would be so cool", he said. Berkery went on to reveal what life growing up without his father was like, saying: "I'd lie in bed imagining doing (more)...
