On an otherwise uneventful Friday evening, about 95 million people watched a white Ford Bronco slowly driving down the 5 freeway.
The driver of the car, of course, was O.J. Simpson, the NFL star turned actor and TV broadcaster, and that day he officially was named as a murder suspect in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
America was glued to their TV sets, with the broadcast networks breaking into their regular programing, and the lone cable news channel CNN having its star host Larry King guide viewers through the action (watch it here).
The chase and subsequent trial (“The Trial of the Century,” as declared by multiple news outlets), with its live cameras in the courtroom, became gripping must-see TV. The not-guilty verdict — handed down at 10 a.m. on a weekday — was watched live by more than 150 million people (on day one of the 1991 Gulf War,...

The White House is demanding that Fox News retract or revise its coverage of claims that Joe Biden was involved in a multi-million dollar bribery scheme after the key witness in the allegation was indicted for making it all up.
In a letter to top executives, Ian Sams, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, cited Fox News Digital stories on the bribery claims, including ones headlined “The Explosive New Evidence of Biden Family’s Breathtaking Corruption,” labeled an opinion piece from Gregg Jarrett, and “Joe Biden Allegedly Paid $5M By Burisma Executive As Part of Bribery Scheme, According to FBI Document,” a story from Brooke Singman. Other stories reported that the allegations came from a “highly credible” source.
“I would cite the number of times Jesse Watters and Sean Hannity promoted this allegation and made false statements about President Biden on primetime television throughout this time period, but the...

One of the more unexpected shifts in media habits during the pandemic, at least for me, has been a new interest in those little bird-box book libraries that inhabit front lawns in the quieter neighborhoods here. I regularly pass a dozen of them on a circuit of five or six miles around Santa Monica and Brentwood. Always, I stop to see what they’re offering. Sometimes, bag and sanitizer in hand, I’ll actually swap a book.
It’s a fascinating exercise, in that the books—from a crumbling Pocket Book edition of George Plimpton’s Out of My League, printed in 1967, to the hefty contemporary cookbooks at a stand-up shed in Santa Monica Canyon—turn out to be far more intellectually, culturally, and politically diverse than the current run of lawn signs, cable news or festival films.

President Donald Trump has called an early lid to any travel or public appearances today. Good thing, as the Commander-in-Tweet has been on fire this morning, continuing his voluminous tweetstorm from Saturday.
Today’s targets included some of the usual suspects, including “Sleepyeyes” Chuck Todd of NBC’s Meet The Press, Paul Krugman of the New York Times (“a lightweight thinker”) and “Shifty” Adam Schiff, the Congressman leading the Democratic impeachment efforts and someone Trump calls a “Corrupt Politician and probably a very sick man.”
NPR apparently shouldn’t get too comfortable, either. Trump retweeted a Mark Levin question: “Why does NPR still exist? We have thousands of radio stations in the U.S. Plus Satellite radio. Podcasts. Why are we paying for this big-government, Democrat Party propaganda operation.” President Trump said it was “a very good question.”
We’ll add more communications as the President rolls them out. The...

President Donald Trump faces off today and gets a chance to tell the Senate his side of the story. An early travel and photo lid has been called by the White House, no doubt so the President can watch the proceedings.
Watching, though, doesn’t mean inaction. The Commander-in-Tweet has already been busy on Twitter, sending out a few communications on his foes and praising Lou Dobbs and Pastor Robert Jeffress for their support.
We’ll add more communications as they roll in. The tweetstorm so far:

In his first remarks since the conclusion of daylong testimony in the impeachment hearing, President Donald Trump continued to insist that it was a waste of time and a “hoax.”
Trump and Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan held a joint news conference at the White House, but the first question had to do with the Day 1 of public testimony in the impeachment inquiry.
“You are talking about the witch hunt?” Trump said when asked by a reporter for One America News Network about his general impressions. “I hear it is a joke. I haven’t watched. I haven’t watched for one minute because I have been with the president, which is much more important as far as I am concerned. This is a sham. It shouldn’t be allowed.”

Fox Business Network came in for criticism late Thursday evening after playing edited footage of Nancy Pelosi that appeared to show the Speaker of the House stumbling and stammering over her words during a press conference earlier that day.
“This is a deceptively edited video,” Brooke Binkowski, a former managing editor of the fact-checking website Snopes, said in a tweet.
“Despite what Trump and Fox Business would have you believe, Nancy Pelosi spoke quite clearly during her news conference today,” added Vox’s Aaron Rupar, while sharing a tweet featuring the full unedited Pelosi video.
The original video was first played on Fox Business’ “Lou Dobbs Tonight” program by Fox News and Fox Business legal contributor Gregg Jarrett.

Fox News host Sean Hannity unfollowed all but three Twitter accounts this month, axing more than 7,000 individuals whom he had been following at the beginning of December. Data from the Internet Archives WayBackMachine shows that Hannity began the purge around Dec. 14 and volleyed between six and three accounts in succeeding days before settling on a current count of three.
As of Thursday morning, the three survivors of the purge were, Donald Trump, Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett, and channel mainstay and former Nratv host Dan Bongino.
Hannity followed a mysterious unverified, locked account known only as “@mamabitch0000,” until late Thursday morning, but unfollowed the account just minutes after TheWrap inquired about the matter to Fox News Channel public relations.

Suddenly, Donald Trump’s newfound interest in books is beginning to make sense: One day after the president tweeted five plugs for books written by right-wing supporters and Fox News pals like Gregg Jarrett and Jeanine Pirro, Penguin Random House has announced that Michelle Obama’s Becoming is officially the best-selling book of 2018.
That’s right, the book that called Trump a “misogynist” and accused him of deliberately using the birther nonsense to “stir up the wingnuts and kooks” has sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S. and Canada within 15 days of its Nov. 13 release.
The 2 million-plus figure includes hardcover, e-book and audio sales, according to the publishing house, citing Ndp BookScan data. Already in its sixth printing, Becoming has 3.4 million hardcover copies in print in the U.S. and Canada, selling a huge 1.4 million copies during its first week of publication. There was never any collusion, and if there was, that’s not a crime. What there was, in fact, were two FBI agents, high off malice and the malodorous fumes of their illicit sexual affair, sending thousands of texts that show them conspiring to clear Hillary Clinton of criminal charges, in a desperate attempt to get her elected, and then, when that failed, turning their efforts towards framing Donald Trump. And not just two FBI agents: the broader intelligence community made sure that Trump entered office with an albatross strapped firmly around his neck.

Spicer — who was speaking remotely from New York City — took the criticism stoically but pushed back sharply in his response.

Sean Spicer added his name to a growing list of former White House officials who are writing books about their stories from their time in the Trump administration.
Sales, however, for the former Trump press secretary’s new book, “The Briefing,” have been less than stellar. As of this writing, pre-order sales on Amazon for Spicer’s book ranked 1,047 on the site’s sales charts.
