Despite being one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms of all time, you don't hear much about "My Three Sons" anymore. The series ran for an impressive 12 seasons beginning in 1960, producing 380 episodes of wholesome sitcom scenarios during a decade of tremendous upheaval. "The real world was quite tumultuous and revolution was in the air," star Barry Livingston told CBS News in a 2009 retrospective, "and we were still eating Uncle Charley's cookies and having milk."
"My Three Sons" doesn't have the enduring legacy of more thought-provoking shows of the '60s and '70s, like "M*A*S*H" and "The Twilight Zone," nor is it typically mentioned in the same breath as all-time-great comedies like "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Despite the show's absence from most abridged versions of TV history, though, it still connected with audiences in its time: the series about a widower raising three sons as a...

“The Cable Guy is Not a horror movie,” you think to yourself while considering verbally punching me in the throat in the comments section below. You’re correct. But also, imagine this: If an unhinged, uber manipulative, obsessive, attention deprived stranger, with deep seeded mother abandonment issues, that you mistakenly let into your home and life began stalking you; turned your friends, family and girlfriend against you; had you arrested for crimes you didn’t commit; set up hidden cameras in your apartment; had you fired from your job; talked dirty to your mother; stalked and assaulted your ex’s new boyfriend in a men’s bathroom at a public restaurant and eventually kidnapped your ex with a stapler (exhale) all in the matter of a few days…
Wouldn’t that be… horrific?
Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey) may be gangly, over the top and hilarious to us but what he...

The Monkees were lucky enough to have prolific songwriters working behind the scenes to craft songs for their music catalog. Many came from New York’s Brill Building, where they worked for the show’s music producer, Don Kirshner. One of these songwriters was Carole King, who, along with her husband Gerry Goffin, wrote tunes on almost every Monkees album except one, perhaps the most important of the band’s career.

One of The Monkees‘ most prolific singalong hits, “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” appeared on their classic album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd. Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, the song was inspired by a street near the couple’s suburban New Jersey home. However, the song’s lyrics had a darker edge than fans realized.

The single peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1967. At the number one position was Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe,” followed by The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
The Monkees held steady at number three. In addition, rounding out the top five in the first week of August 1967 was The Doors’ “Light My Fire” and Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You.

The Trouble With Super Bowl Ads Is There's No Danger Music, But There Is Jim Carrey As The Cable Guy
It's been over 25 years since Jim Carrey played Chip Douglas, the obnoxious, lisping cable installer who worms his way into the life of an average Joe embodied by Matthew Broderick in "The Cable Guy." Carrey was fresh off the success of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," and "Batman Forever" when he starred in "The Cable Guy" for director Ben Stiller in 1996. In an age when seemingly every movie character under the sun is resurrected in a legacy sequel — or Super Bowl commercial — The Cable Guy isn't necessarily the...

The newest trailer for Marvel’s WandaVision is here, and just like the last one, it’s full of classic TV homages punctuated with psychedelic imagery, and increasingly disturbing themes. And this one is set to a familiar tune, one that’s perfectly appropriate for the golden age of sitcoms that WandaVision seems to explore/lampoon…and just like this show’s relationship to that legacy, the tune is twisted for new meaning. The song, in question barely recognizable under increasing layers of psychedelic weirdness, is The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer.”
Check it out here…
The song’s title and lyrics would appear to hold up a mirror to the increasingly fractured state that Wanda finds herself in with each new frame of the trailer. And it lends further credence to all the theories that whatever Wanda is experiencing, including/especially the return of her android lover, Vision, aren’t what they seem…...

A posthumous Davy Jones Christmas record, It’s Christmas Time Once More, has been released.
Jones’ vocals derive from the 1991 cassette tape It’s Christmas Time Again. The new LP features guest vocals from fellow Monkee Micky Dolenz and his sister Coco, Jones’ daughter Annabel, and photographer Henry Diltz. “Singing with my dad on this record was an extremely beautiful and healing experience,” Annabel said in a statement. “What a gift to be able to share a moment like this!”

There has always been an understated rivalry between the mediums of movies and television. Many years ago it was even thought as being somewhat of a drastic career letdown if actors/actresses from film decided to depart for the landscape of television. The truth is that for some performers that had stalled or uneventful momentum in motion pictures that the concept of “slumming it” in television actually saved their show business profession. Hence, the boob tube made them relevant whereas the big screen had unceremoniously passed them by.
However, there is also a mutual respect that cinema and television share that go hand in hand when shaping our appreciation for entertainment on both the big and small screen. When movies depict the aspects of the TV world giving a sociological, psychological or emotional perspective then it is not so uncool to be a proud couch potato after all, right? Let...

The contradiction in film criticism certainly does not go unnoticed. Sure, there are countless films that are praised and applauded for its excellence in quality and creativity. Unfortunately, the overlooked cinema fare that deserves just as much attention (more so than some of the recognized critically-acclaimed selections on an impressive selection of critics’ and moviegoers’ radars) get lost in the proverbial shuffle. It is simply the professional hazard of the movie industry because not every well-received and standout gem will get its rightful due come major awards season in Hollywood.
Just how many times have we as movie reviewers and/or movie fans become indignant when we realized that the special piece of entertainment we personally and critically cherished came up short and empty in expectations? Again, every smart kid in the classroom cannot get a gold star as we remain a competitive society in the world of celluloid superiority.

With a potential comeback on the cards for Jim Carrey, Rob looks through the hidden gems of his career.
Feature
Alrighty then. To get straight to the point – Jim Carrey’s career hasn’t been up to much lately has it? Certainly as leading man, at least. His last big-hitter was 2009’s A Christmas Carol, while his most recent leading role was 2011’s Mr Popper’s Penguins.
His latest performance outside of cameos was an interesting part in Kick Ass 2 though, a promising turn which left many audience-members wanting more from his character. With the trailer dropping recently for Dumb And Dumber To as well, the hints of a comeback for the iconic performer have continued to grow.
There’s been more positivity towards Dumb And Dumber To in comments than we might have expected (although this welcoming response was far from unanimous), which is undeniably a positive sign for the fledgling star.

This was the beginning of the end right here. Oh sure, more comedies would follow. In fact, there would be a steady stream of comedic roles, tempered with dramas and lighter fare, leading up to and throughout the first half of the 21st century. Jim Carrey’s comedic gifts wouldn’t totally disappear, they are uniquely tied to who he is and his creative process.
However, his gifts wouldn’t have the freedom and boldness they did in 1996 when The Cable Guy was released. He wouldn’t put himself out there like that again. The response to the film by the public and critics was negative, and despite the cushion of a 25 million dollar payday, he did not come away unscathed.
Looking back, you have to wonder what people were thinking when they panned this film. What about it did they find so off-putting? It’s a remarkably deep and multi-layered comedy,...

The best thing about our list of the nine greatest karaoke scenes in movies? That the scenes we've chosen are not only fun to watch, but they can also provide helpful hints to real-world karaoke singers (even those who happen to be movie stars).
From the sincere crooning in "Duets" and Chris Tucker's committed Michael Jackson cover in "Rush Hour 2" to Hilary Swank's sexy Prince jam in "P.S. I Love You" and the deliciously over-the-top performance of our number one pick, these are some movie karaoke moments that might just inspire you to rock the mic yourself.
9. Andre Braugher and Paul Giamatti in 'Duets' (2000)
The whole movie's about karaoke, so of course, we had to include one of its many karaoke performances to get this list started. Do we still giggle a bit at the mere idea of a plot that revolves around Huey Lewis as a road-tripping karaoke hustler?...

Back in 1990 a Rob Reiner-directed horror thriller called Misery took an underappreciated actor named Kathy Bates and rocketed her to the top of the world. Her portrayal of the homely but psychotic Annie Wilkes got tons of critical praise, had the mainstream talking, and eventually won her a Best Actress Oscar. In 1994 an oddball comedy named Ace Ventura: Pet Detective took a relatively obscure comedian named Jim Carrey and made him one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. That’s not the movie I’m going to be talking about though. The movie I’m going to talk about came two years later, it’s called The Cable Guy, and it was seen as the first disappointment of Carrey’s gigantic post Ace Ventura career. His portrayal of the troubled “Chip Douglas” didn’t register with critics or audiences who previously had no trouble accepting him as a pet detective that talked out of...

As Bridesmaids arrives in UK this week, Glen looks at the finest songs in its producer Judd Apatow's other hit comedies...
Judd Apatow is a dominant force in the world of movie comedies, with his work as producer and director seeing great successes over the course of his career. With the upcoming UK release of Bridesmaids, which is produced by Apatow, I thought now would be an ideal time to look at some of my favourite musical moments from the films he's been involved with.
Step Brothers: Boats ‘N Hoes

This isn’t the first time that either Step Brothers or Ferrell and Reilly will be appearing in this list. It’s a film that I have a lot of love for, and one of the few to leave me unable to breathe for laughing...

Jim Carrey established himself as a funny guy in the early 90s, and the performances he turned in for that decade were consistently lighthearted and comical in films that you could typically take the whole family to without worrying about content. There were of course a few exceptions to this: the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon, the notably dirtier Me, Myself & Irene, and The Cable Guy. The first two stand out as having adult situations, with Man on the Moon being the third in Jim Carrey’s effort to redefine himself as a well-rounded actor and not just a comedy star. The Cable Guy is an entirely different animal. It has elements of Ace Ventura characterization, but the film’s tone has an eerie and absurd vein and a subdued thriller vibe that audiences just weren’t expecting.
