‘Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ – 10 Things We Learned from the Blu-ray Commentaries
If you enjoyed Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls on Screambox, the Blu-ray is a treasure trove. The horror-comedy is accompanied by three different commentary tracks featuring writer-director-editor-star Andrew Bowser and various crew members, among other special features.
Bowser is naturally funny, seamlessly slipping in Onyx-isms, but he’s also not afraid to get real. There’s a solo director’s track, a commentary focused on the production alongside actress/producer Olivia Taylor Dudley and producer Clark Baker, and a sound commentary joined by sound designer/supervising sound editor Mike James Gallagher.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Onyx the Fortuitous commentaries…
1. The film was intended to start with Bartok removing his eye.
Bowser intended to give viewers a taste of the horrors to come with a cold open that would introduce Jeffrey Combs as Bartok the Great in a scene in which he removes his own eye.

HeBGB TV was among my favorite films I saw at Salem Horror Fest earlier this year, so I’m delighted that the frenetic horror-comedy anthology has made its way to Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s streaming service Screambox in time for Halloween.
In my review, I called it “a high-camp blend of the wistful glow of Wnuf Halloween Special, the uninhibited hyperactivity of Rick and Morty‘s “Interdimensional Cable” episodes, and the absurd unpredictability of Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks.”
What I didn’t mention was all nods to genre favorites peppered throughout the film.
Here are 17 horror references in HeBGB TV.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
HeBGB TV’s opening credits are inspired by the Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers title sequence, which perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere.
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
The boy in the opening scene is playing with a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

Review: Adaptations are always tricky, let alone trying to adapt something like a character from YouTube. Yet somehow Andrew Bowser’s Onyx the Fortuitous works really well in the narrative here. Sure, there are going to be people that are driven crazy by his delivery but I found myself oddly charmed by it. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s a spectacular cast surrounding him that provides plenty of hilarity. I would hope that most know what they’re getting into when it comes to something called Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. But you never know.

Barbara Crampton is an absolute legend in the world of horror. Whether it’s her classic films from the 80s like Re-Animator or From Beyond, or more recent fare like You’re Next or Jakob’s Wife, she’s had quite the career. And her newest role in Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls may not be a particularly prominent one, but it leaves an impact. Because if there’s one thing we haven’t seen enough from her in her career, it’s comedy. So I was absolutely overjoyed to be able to discuss the film with her and find out some of the film’s secrets, I loved the film and can’t wait for people to see it (in theaters for One Night Only!). So check out the video above if you want to see how she got her Re-Animator co-star Jeffrey Combs involved with the project,...

Those influences extend to music, and we’ve got a treat for you this afternoon with a brand new clip channeling Meatloaf’s hit song “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)”… in the form of a hilarious dream sequence from the film.

I had never heard of Onyx the Fortuitous before I started seeing reports about the upcoming movie Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls – and even then, I didn’t pay much attention to it because I figured something called Onyx the Fortuitous must be an animated children’s film. You’ve seen “Onyx The Fortuitous” on Youtube where he hijacks news reports with his odd personality and motormouth. Now he is coming to the big screen with his full-length feature Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, written, directed and starring Andrew Bowser, based on his internet-famous character also known as the “Weird Satanist Guy.” After a successful crowdfunding campaign to finance part of the production, the throwback horror comedy has been shown at Sundance, Glasgow FrightFest, and more recently, Fantasia Film Fest.
My first exposure to Onyx the Fortuitous was hearing his voice in the intro of Iron Reagan’s 12-second banger “Your Kid’s An Asshole”. Wanting to find the source of said sample, I stumbled upon his viral videos and wondered if this guy was for real and, if so, how did he manage to always be in the right place at the right time to get an interview?...

Nobody familiar with the horror filmmaking and fan community will find it surprising that some films are made expressly with that community in mind. It’s a very forgiving community where budgetary limitations are concerned, and also one which is very supportive of new creative spirits. Andrew Bowser has worked in television in the past and has made an impressive number of shorts, but he really shot to fame thanks to one video skit, Weird Satanist Guy, which went viral on TikTok in 2016. It was through this that the character of Onyx, an ‘amateur Satanist’, first came to prominence. This film is an attempt to transfer his story onto the big screen.
Such attempts are, of course, fraught with dangers. What works very well as a brief concept or a single joke can’t necessarily be supported across a 108 minute narrative. In this case, however, it has been surprisingly successful.

As exciting as the communal experience, early access to anticipated titles, and rubbing elbows with filmmakers can be, the most rewarding film festival screenings often involve the discovery of a new movie that you can’t wait to share with others. I was not at all familiar with HeBGB TV — I didn’t even know how to pronounce its tongue-twisting title (Heebie-Jeebie TV) — prior to my Salem Horror Fest 2023 coverage, but I left eager to proselytize.
A frenetic, Halloween-set horror-comedy anthology of sorts, HeBGB TV concerns the titular, Cronenbergian device that pulsates with multidimensional programming. As Purple Guy, a Willy Wonka-esque mascot that walks the line between affable and sinister, explains to a pair of apathetic siblings, “This isn’t your ordinary cable box, you see. It’s got anything and everything you could possibly ever want to watch in your lifetime, all squeezed down teeny tiny and then jammed up inside of it.

There are many flavours of hubris. An over inflated or confident self image we attempt to project out to the world. What we think we know or what we think we deserve deserve. The faith we place in our idols, our gods, in all of these things. I was rather suprised to see this explored, albeit often in a middle school-yard, potty-mouthed kind of way, in Andrew Bowser's Onyx The Fortuitous And The Talisman of Souls (hereafter: Talisman of Souls). For years, his "Weird Satanist Guy" persona has been posted to YouTube, with Onyx The Fortuitous crashing local news live-hits with his too-intense satanic stances, and not-quite-cosplay dress-up. Many of these bits go viral precisely because they walk the fine line of 'is this guy...

Fans of gateway horror get ready for Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, an unbelievably fun horror movie that harkens back to classics such as Beetlejuice, Ernest Scared Stupid, and even Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
The film was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival and is next set to play the Calgary Underground Film Festival before making its way to theaters this fall. We’re told huge news is imminent.
To commemorate the screening in Calgary, the filmmakers have created a hilarious poster exclusively for the event that gives homage to Re-Animator and celebrates Onyx star Jeffrey Combs!
“100 copies will be sold online and 150 copies will be available in person at the festival. Designed by Nate Maldonado, the art is numbered and autographed by Onyx director and star Andrew Bowser!”
The art gets into the mind of Andrew Bowser’s Onyx, which obsesses over everything from Alf to Satan.
The film was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival and is next set to play the Calgary Underground Film Festival before making its way to theaters this fall. We’re told huge news is imminent.

A brand new scripted audio series that just launched this year, NPRmageddon is “what National Public Radio will sound like after the apocalypse,” the team explains.
NPRmageddon is a ten-part post-apocalyptic sci-fi arthouse radio show audio drama adjective-rich podcast in the style of public radio, broadcast from the United States of “Lost” Angeles.
Creators Bryan Keithley and Peter Podgursky tell Save the Cat, “We based our storytelling on how modern media operates and what National Public Radio sounds like now.
“Our approach with NPRmageddon was to give our listeners the good stuff—to lean on one-off stories heavy on science fiction and horror tropes, but to push those tropes through the lens of public media journalism. Step through a typical episode of NPRmageddon, and you’ll find a delicious selection of news-y mayhem worthy of any headline-grabbing lineup from the real world—from marauding mutants to rogue AI’s to parasitic pulsating brains.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Dudley discussed what it was like working with Bowser.
“Andrew’s pretty cool,” she laughed. “We’ve known each other for ten years and we’ve been making stuff on and off the whole time, especially these last five years. So I’ve been very familiar with the character Onyx and I get such a kick out of Onyx.”

Genre comedies are a mixed bag, and for every cult gem like 2010’s Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, the Sundance Midnight strand has been known to throw in a bomb. In its opening moments, Andrew Bowser’s fourth feature threatens to be such a write-off, with achingly broad comic strokes and jokes that don’t really land as Bowser introduces his leading man: himself. The awkward slapstick tone is reminiscent of very early Peter Jackson—notably his wonky debut, Bad Taste—but once the story gets underway, and other characters join the frame, things become demonstrably better. To such a degree that the style and production values mature faster than Jackson’s did, blossoming into a likable romp reminiscent of the director’s first real studio movie, The Frighteners (1996).
