Always Be My Maybe, a slight riff on the famous Mariah Carey song, is directed by Nahnatchka Khan and comes from the minds of both Randall Park and Ali Wong. The two performers play former inseparable neighbouring best friends who go their separate ways after an awkward encounter in their teens but are suddenly thrown back together after a calculated encounter decades after. Finding their respective lives going in completely opposite directions. Always Be My Maybe is perhaps the best comedy released this year with fantastic engaging chemistry between the two leads of Ali Wong and Randall Park with superb writing that balances tone brilliantly.
The comedy here from Park and Wong is outstanding.

When was the last time I had so much fun watching a romcom? Can't remember. But the sheer joy of flowing with this breezy fluid mellow-drama about childhood friends growing up into belligerent reluctant lovers, was an experience worth going through.
Some critics have commented on the light tone of the film. But light isn't flippant. Simply because the film doesn't address gay issues or a nuclear leakage doesn't mean it can make no claims to being something serious. And when I say 'serious' I don't mean a glum countenance gotten into the film just to look committed to something more than frothy entertainment.
Always Be My Maybe is proudly nakedly persistently frothy and entertaining. It tells the story of Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) who are neighbours since childhood. Their kinship is undeniable from the word go. And that they would finally come together is not a spoiler.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Always Be My Maybe.”]
Through Keanu Reeves’ larger-than-life roles, tales of gracious humility, and love of privacy, the actor has created a certain mystique that is catnip to adoring fans. That includes the Asian-American community, which never forgets that he’s also part Chinese-Hawaiian and claims him as one of their own. It’s that blend of global megastar name recognition and Asian identification that makes him the perfect choice to send up in Netflix’s rom-com “Always Be My Maybe.”
In the film written by and starring Ali Wong and Randall Park, celebrity chef Sasha (Wong) and her childhood friend Marcus (Park) reconnect in their 30s after she returns to her native San Francisco to open a new restaurant. Just as he’s about to try to rekindle whatever spark they might have had, Sasha begins seeing another man: Keanu Reeves.

By the time Nahnatchka Khan’s breezy directorial debut “Always Be My Maybe” offers up a hearty wink at “Pretty Woman,” the Netflix original feature has already earned its stripes as the online streamer’s next great rom-com. Khan’s film pulls liberally from the genre playbook — stars and co-writers Ali Wong and Randall Park haven’t been shy about the film’s early inspirations, especially classics like “When Harry Met Sally” — but it also offers its own charms, thanks to Wong and Park, who delight both on-screen and on the page. And while “Always Be My Maybe” doesn’t reinvent its genre, it’s a welcome addition that contributes cultural diversity to a typically white-dominated screen space, and leans into tropes that have always made rom-coms such a joy to watch.

Society, and relentless commercial campaigns, constantly bombard women with messages about matrimony: Score a big, sparkly diamond. Obsess over a fancy white dress. And definitely marry your best friend. That latter cliché has been espoused by countless Hollywood comedies, from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” to “Made of Honor,” where one party resorts to outlandish shenanigans to win over the more reluctant party. Refreshingly, director Nahnatchka Khan’s “Always Be My Maybe” presents a less lopsided — and by extension, more natural — situation in which two estranged childhood friends attempt to reignite their teen romance. The positive influence of “When Harry Met Sally” is noticeable in the undercurrents, but Netflix’s politically correct romantic comedy has its own unique identity, savoring aspects of Asian-American culture and treating both protagonists as equal partners.

Netflix might have their own “Crazy Rich Asians” on their hands. In the romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” Ali Wong and Randall Park play an adorable couple who are childhood friends and former lovers.
Fifteen years removed from their fling and falling out, Sasha (Wong) is now a successful celebrity chef and Marcus (Park) is still living at home and working for his dad. And in the first trailer for the film, it all looks and sounds very cute, but doesn’t skimp on the foul-mouthed wordplay and double entendres that Wong has come to be known for in her stand-up comedy.
“It might be even smaller and grosser than I remember,” Wong says as she looks at the backseat of Park’s old Corolla where they once hooked up. “You better still be talking about my backseat,” Park responds.

Keanu Reeves and Daniel Dae Kim have jumped on board a new Netflix comedy in production called Always Be My Maybe. The film is currently in production and the actors will join the previously cast Ali Wong and Randall Park. It's a rare thing to see Reeves do comedy, but it's always fun to see him take on a comedic role. I have no idea what to expect from him in this film, but I hope it's good!
The story follows childhood sweethearts "who have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. They reconnect as adults when Sasha, now a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco, runs into Marcus, a happily struggling musician still living at home working for his dad."

Netflix have announced that John Wick star Keanu Reeves is to join Ali Wong and Randall Park on their new comedy, Always Be My Maybe.
The project follows two childhood sweethearts who have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. They reconnect as adults when Wong’s character — a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco — runs into Park’s character, a happily struggling musician still living at home working for his dad. The old sparks are still there, but can they adapt to each other’s world? It is currently unclear which role Reeves will be playing.
Nahnatchka Khan – who has previously worked with Park and Wong on Fresh Off the Boat – will direct from a script by Wong, Park and Michael Golamco. The production also stars Michelle Buteau, Vivian Bang, Karan Soni, Charlyne Yi, Daniel Dae Kim, James Saito, Lyrics Born and Susan Park.

Happening upon Vivian Bang’s “Can You Hear Me / La 92” performance art piece at downtown Los Angeles’ Redcat Theater, writer/director Daryl Wein sensed the presence of a kindred spirit. “I was just blown away by her performance and everything that she was talking about. The piece was dissecting the La riots from the Korean-American perspective, getting into the history and politics between the black community and the Korean-American community,” Wein said, sitting down…...

Filmmaker Daryl Wein’s first encounter with Korean-American actress Vivian Bang was at a presentation of her performance art piece “Can You Hear Me? / La 92,” in which she plays an immigrant recalling the many, typically racially-centered hardships of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. He was so taken with the piece and with Bang’s embodiment of the central character (“When I left the theater, I felt a mixture of emotions; I was moved, heartbroken, enraged, guilty, enlightened,” he writes in the press notes) that he wanted to build a lightly fictionalized movie around her. Unfortunately, the end result, titled White...

A funny, fresh detective comedy is tough to do in any language. Many shows have tried to infuse the sordid world of cheap private investigators with some offbeat humor, but “Swedish Dicks,” the latest attempt, co-created and starring Peter Stormare, bases its story in L.A. with an international and bilingual twist.
Stormare plays Ingmar, a broke ex-Hollywood stuntman who opens up an unusually affordable detective agency. Working out of a nondescript downtown L.A. office, one particular job brings fellow Swedish ex-pat Axel (Johan Glans) into his professional orbit. After the two narrowly escape the clutches of a particularly twisty gig, they go into business together. Operating under an agency with the same name as the show’s title, these two Swedes handle their client’s unconventional requests wherever in the city they might lead.

TBS is going 2-for-2 with its new comedy series with a renewal of freshman Sullivan & Son executive produced by Vince Vaughn. As part of its return to half-hour sitcoms, TBS launched two new shows behind its blockbuster off-network performer The Big Bang Theory this year, Men At Work and Sullivan & Son. Both have now been picked up for a second season. Airing Thursdays at 10 Pm, Sullivan & Son, which has received a 10-episode second-season order, is averaging more than 2.5 million viewers. “Sullivan & Son has gotten off to a strong start, quickly building its own fan base,” said TBS’ head of programming Michael Wright. After a solid launch with 2.5 million viewers, Sullivan & Son exceeded expectations in Week 2 when it held onto 100% of its premiere audience. The series stars Steve Byrne as a corporate attorney who finds new life behind the bar when he leaves his Manhattan lifestyle and moves to Pittsburgh to take over his parents’ pub.

The wave of political correctness (PC) that swept through college campuses and business offices throughout the '90s and early '00s and informed the type of comedy that audiences found palatable has all but dissipated, as evidenced by the popularity of very un-pc TV shows like Family Guy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Sullivan & Son, which routinely lampoon racial stereotypes. Some argue that this type of comedy actually promotes stereotyping, but Sullivan & Son co-creator Steve Byrne and actress Vivian Bang disagree, telling Sam Rubin that such comedy helps in "breaking down those PC walls" and creating a sense of "community" among the races.
