Krull (1983)
Classic
The people that dislike this movie and use the words clichéd or cheesy, miss out on the abundance of characterization that works and will always work. An intrepid hero, a pretty heroine, the fool with a heart, the quiet giant, entertaining rogues, a sweet boy, seers, mystics, monsters, all with distinct personalities the real world can relate to. They aren't supposed to be twisted and complicated. I have enjoyed this movie for years and it isn't s(l)ick with Matrix garbage (although The Matrix is good for what it is). Krull just oozes personality (which The Matrix couldn't do because the actors are too busy with their Dick Tracy dialogue and harness belts).
My favorite scene is when Ynyr confronts the Widow of the Web and we find a deep and dark story within a story, briefly told. Relax and enjoy.
Equilibrium (2002)
Three cheers...
... to director Kurt Wimmer for not succumbing to the mindless action dregs of The Matrix, and instead instilling heart, soul and feeling into the drama behind an action/thriller. I was very pleased with this film. Only Christian Bale could have pulled off the Preston character. Bale is one of Britain's best exports, putting the definition of art back into acting with his amazing sensitivity and keen perception of his characters.
Never Too Young to Die (1986)
So bad, it's worse
LOL, this is bad, yes, but if you really must know, I think it's worth checking out just to see Gene Simmons cackle like the wicked witch of the west. Otherwise it's a stinkeroo. I could have a whole tape of this movie with just Gene's scenes in it to lmao. This also robs heavily from the Mad Max movies. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear it was also making fun of the gender bender, big hair boy bands of the 80's. Or someone's perception of them anyway.
Robert Zemeckis on Smoking, Drinking and Drugging in the 20th Century: In Pursuit of Happiness (1999)
Excellent documentary on the American history of drugs, cigarettes and alcohol
I had recorded this unknown gem a long time ago off of Showtime and just recently rediscovered it. It is an interesting look at legal and illegal vices in the 20th Century and mentions a few facts I found very surprising and quite enlightening. Apparently, this is one in a series of documentaries starting with 'The 20th Century:' title. (Check out the directors). Now that I've seen this, I'd love to see the rest.
