[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
And while The Second Story did respectable business during its two-week theatrical run that summer and was also a profitable sequel for New World, House II isn’t a film that I feel gets nearly the love that it should. Case in point: Joshua Jackson’s character makes a comment about House II during the sequels discussion scene in Scream 2,...

Veep‘s presidential library arc climaxed in Sunday’s time-tripping Season 6 finale as ex-potus Selina Meyer prepared to preside over the dedication of her museum/shrine. But inevitably an 11th hour crisis derailed her big moment as Amy informed her boss that the library was going to be built on Yale University’s former slave quarters. Oh, and the building looks like a giant vagina, prompting Selina to dub it a “Vagibrary.”

No one loves a great scene more than the person who first dreamed it up -- the writer. We're asking iconic shows' creators and writers to tell Et all about getting to see their most cherished moment on their series make it from script to screen.
For Inside Amy Schumer co-creator and executive producer Dan Powell, it’s an Emmy-winning sketch, “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup,” from season three. Dubbed by many as the “One Direction parody” -- for its similarities to the band’s hit song “What Makes You Beautiful” -- the sketch skewered the hypocrisy surrounding the "no makeup" movement. And what may have started as a “joke within a joke” for producer Jim Roach and the writers soon became the feminist satire of the year.
The sketch also came early in season three, which included celebrated episodes such as “Last F**kable Day” and “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer.” The show itself...

Karen Gillan is increasingly busy of late. The Scottish actress, known primarily for her time with Matt Smith’s Doctor in the guise of Amy Pond, has just completed the second of her Guardians of the Galaxy film as well as a leading role in the new Jumanji film with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. She starred in the underrated TV show Selfie, and has had small roles in films such as The Big Short and Ti West’s In a Valley of Violence. Now she takes on another challenge – her first film as director.
Tupperware Party, which she will star in as well as being the writer and director, is filming in Scotland right now, with Mt Hollywood Films producing. Gillan explains the film,

“Bad Moms,” starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, follows three overworked and under-appreciated mothers who are pushed beyond their limits and ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom and fun. The raunchy comedy is out in theaters on July 29, here is what the critics are saying.
IndieWire’s Kate Erbland gave the film a B-, noting that it “boasts some good jokes but Hahn’s revelatory performance is the big draw.” It’s not the most iconic film of the year but Kate writes, “Like so many other films hitting the big screen this year, from ‘Neighbors 2’ to ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,’ ‘Bad Moms’ isn’t afraid to let its leading ladies prove that women can behave just as badly as men, and be funny as hell while doing it… Hahn steals every single scene she’s in, a hilarious ball of pure comedic id.

Lewis Black has seen more than a few changes at The Daily Show since his Back in Black segments began airing during the show's inaugural season in 1996. Host Craig Kilborn gave way to Jon Stewart; the program gradually changed from a smug TV-news parody to an institution that viciously mocked hypocritical politicians and the media establishment that covers them; and legendary correspondents like Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and John Oliver all moved onto their own projects. The only things to truly survive all 19 years are the Moment of Zen, the theme song — and Black himself.

It's 100% confirmed: Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man, and Jon Watts is to direct the new Spider-Man film...
The speculation was around about right for this one. Marvel Studios has announced the identity of the man taking over the role of Spider-Man from Andrew Garfield. And the winner? That'd be Tom Holland, who has thus far appeared in the likes of The Impossible and Wolf Hall.
In an official statement released by Marvel, Holland was confirmed, citing how impressed the studio and producers were by both his previous work, and "a series of complex screen tests". He is expected to debut the role in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, and will definitely star in 2017's new standalone Spider-Man film.
Furthermore, we now know who's directing that as well. Jon Watts, the director of acclaimed incoming thriller Cop Car, is to take on the Spider-Man job.
Official statements have naturally enough been forthcoming.

After plenty of speculation and even an early report the gig had gone to Asa Butterfield, it was finally made official today that Tom Holland (The Impossible, "Wolf Hall") will be your new Spider-Man, making his first appearance as the webslinger within Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016 followed by a new standalone Spider-Man film on July 28, 2017. In fact, with regard to that new Spider-Man film, Sony has hired Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car) to direct the feature, which will focus on a much younger Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man) with the goal of keeping Parker much younger throughout a new series of films and, according to earlier reports, hoping to mimic the feeling of early John Hughes, coming-of-age features. Commenting on the announcement in a press release, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, "It's a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.

One of the most high-profile casting searches in Hollywood history has reportedly come to a close today, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Marvel and Sony have settled on The Impossible actor Tom Holland to play Spider-Man in Sony-made solo pics as well as installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – including next year’s Captain America: Civil War.
Additionally, Jon Watts, who made a splashy Sundance debut earlier this year with Cop Car, has come out of nowhere to snatch the directing gig on Sony’s 2017 stand-alone Spider-Man pic away from the likes of Warm Bodies‘ Jonathan Levine and Vacation filmmakers John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. When Ben Affleck was first cast as the lead in David Fincher's "Gone Girl," many scoffed at the choice. But it turned out be a canny move by the director, one that added a meta-layer to the pulpy thriller. Affleck relished the opportunity to prove the haters wrong, giving a pitch-perfect performance as the not-so-innocent target of Amazing Amy. But, as always, things could've turned out different. According to Page Six, at one point, "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm was up for the lead role, but reportedly, "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner blocked his chance to make the movie. “Matt would not let Jon out of his contract to do ‘Gone Girl.’ Jon was really upset about it at the time — and is still upset, because he’s thinking about the future of his career as ‘Mad Men’ comes to a close,” a source told the paper. The 1990′s introduced the world to Quentin Tarantino, saw the creation of the Nc-17 rating, and began the slow call toward fully computer animated films. It began the slow (still slow) movement toward a more diverse industry, with the first African-American director earning an Oscar nomination (John Singleton for “Boyz in the Hood”). And the year after one of the greatest years in the history of film, 1995 came plodding along, trying to keep up. So, for the first definitive list of 2015, we are going to look back 20 years at a year that, at first glance, doesn’t look so hot. It’s ripe with flops, but it’s also full of debuts, trailblazing beginnings, and better films than it gets credit for. But, the caveat still stands: this is not a “best of” list. In fact, there are a lot of bad movies on this list. But, they are movies that made a cultural impact,...

"Are You Here" writer and director Matthew Weiner spent the last two decades in television, in which he was instrumental in bringing not one but two of the most popular and important TV shows of the era, "The Sopranos" and "Mad Men" to the small screen. Once production wrapped on HBO's acclaimed mob series, Weiner started work on a '60s-era drama centered on New York's most prestigious ad agencies, "Mad Men," ultimately winning seven Emmys in as many years. Now, with the latter almost in his rear-view, he turns his attention to the big screen.
As Weiner told Moviefone, he's concerned with storytelling and less focused on the medium, be it television, film, or theater. With that attitude, it should come as no surprise that the USC Film School alum makes his directorial feature debut this summer. His new movie, "Are You Here," stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and...

"Parks and Recreation" just concluded its sixth season in memorable fashion (here's my review), with the Pawnee/Eagleton unity concert, a trip to San Francisco, big cameos and then a very crazy idea at the very end of the finale which could give us a very different show in season 7. As usual when "Parks" wraps up a season, I emailed co-creator Mike Schur some questions about what went down, and why. It goes without saying that big big spoilers are coming, immediately. When, how and why did you come up with the idea for this three-year time jump? Mike Schur: We were breaking the final batch of episodes and had begun discussing the finale story. Some of it was sort of pre-destined, because we had the Unity Concert, which was going to put the merger storyline to rest, by showing that the town en masse would speak louder than the naysayers.
