In Netflix’s The Signal, German astronaut Paula Groth hears a voice while on a mission at the International Space Station. What she does after that is the crux of the story, which keeps oscillating between the past and the present. Paula’s activities in the show are often confusing and sometimes questionable, but as the narrative progresses, they start to make a lot of sense. The character has less screentime than Sven, Paula’s husband and the de facto male lead, or even Charlie, the couple’s nine-year-old daughter, but she is still the most important character in this story. In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at Paula Groth.
Spoilers Ahead
What Does Paula Suffer From?

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

For many people, a film like Land of Bad might not have enough to catch the eye. However, personally, almost everything about it made me instantly want to add it to my watchlist: a straightforward, action-driven premise based on a rescue operation; a quite decent cast with Liam (The Hunger Games) and Luke Hemsworth (Next Goal Wins), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), Ricky Whittle (The 100), and Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us); and most importantly, it’s directed by William Eubank, who made the overlooked yet loved amongst many of the people who’ve seen it, Underwater.

The Sulu Sea is a body of water in the southwestern area of the Philippines, and as the opening crawl of Land of Bad tells us, home to some of the most violent extremists in Asia. It’s also where Master Sergeant John “Sugar” Sweet and his team, Sergeant Abell and Sergeant Bishop are being deployed.
Joining them is Air Force Sergeant J.J. Kinney a rookie Jtac. He’s not qualified to go out with these guys, but he was the only one available to act as their link with drone operators Reaper and Nia back in the US.

In late 2011, William Eubank took a job as second unit director of Allen Hughes’ Broken City. Hughes hired Eubank off of early footage from his feature directorial debut, Love (2011), which is a Kubrickian arthouse film that he made in collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves. The second-unit gig was especially meaningful because it not only landed Eubank his DGA card, but it also marked the beginning of his career-long trajectory with Broken City’s co-lead, Russell Crowe, who’s now leading his action-thriller, Land of Bad.
In 2016, while Crowe was on the promotional trail for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Eubank met up with him to discuss his now long-gestating fantasy actioner, World Breaker, however, despite Crowe’s interest at the time, the filmmaker was pulled away when Underwater got the green light from 20th Century Fox. A handful of years later, when Eubank revisited his...

Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth star in director William Eubank’s action thriller, Land Of Bad. Here’s an intense, shooty red band trailer.
Russell Crowe arguably gets the cosier end of the deal in the upcoming action thriller, Land Of Bad. While Liam Hemsworth wades through water, gets shot at, and seemingly gets involved in Fight Club-style fisticuffs, Crowe sits in a gamer’s chair and barking advice in an air conditioned military building.
Land Of Bad is the latest film from director William Eubank (who also co-writes with David Frigerio) – a filmmaker who broke through with the low-budget yet ambitious sci-fi Love in 2011. He later made sci-fi thriller The Signal (2014), the actually-pretty-good ocean bottom sci-fi horror Underwater (2020), and chiller sequel Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin (2021).

His latest film is an intense-looking behind-enemy-lines opus akin to something like Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor.

It's the latest movie from talented filmmaker Will Eubank, of The Signal, Underwater, and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. "When sh*t goes down in the jungle, there's one team for the job." When a Delta Force team is ambushed in enemy territory, a rookie officer played by the other brother Liam Hemsworth refuses to abandon them. Their only hope lies with an Air Force drone pilot as the eyes in the sky during a brutal 48-hour battle for survival in the jungle. Russell Crowe co-stars as the drone pilot, with a cast including Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, Milo Ventimiglia, Daniel MacPherson, Gunner Wright, and Lincoln Lewis. Another Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth collaboration was not a square on our 2024 pop culture Bingo card, yet it looks like we're about to check it off. Moviegoers are due to see the pair of Aussies team up for the second time in as many years in February's military action thriller "Land of Bad." The pair recently co-starred in the 2022 movie "Poker Face" (no relation to the TV show of the same name), a thriller about a high stakes poker game gone wrong that was directed by Crowe himself.
This time around it's not a card game that goes wrong, but a mission. "Land of Bad" follows a group of military men on an extraction assignment in the Philippines that takes a bloody turn, leaving one young officer at the mercy of the elements and local militia. Fortunately, he's not alone: he's got Russell Crowe's drone pilot droning in his ear,...

2023 did not lack for good-to-great original horror movies. You can't hate a year that gave us "When Evil Lurks," "Skinamarink," "Talk to Me" and "M3GAN" (among several others). So who cares if Hollywood persists in remaking horror classics, even if it's already been remade (and remade well)?
Irvin Yeaworth's 1958 "The Blob" is hardly a sacred text. It's an effective monster movie that gets surprisingly decent mileage out of its gelatinous, slow-moving creature. Yeaworth tries the viewer's patience by trying to shoehorn in a rebellious teen storyline (which was the rage at the time thanks to hit films like "Rebel Without a Cause"), though who could blame him with first-time leading man Steve McQueen doing the rebelling? All that matters is that he sticks the landing with a fun, movie-theater-set finale. The awful 1972 sequel, "Beware! The Blob," is notable for being the only feature directed by Larry Hagman, who would later...

According to The Wrap, David Bruckner has signed on to write and direct a remake of The Blob for Warner Bros. Discovery.
The original 1958 movie starred a young Steve McQueen, in his first leading role, and revolved around a carnivorous amoeboidal alien that crashed in a small Pennsylvania town and began consuming everyone and everything in its path. Plot details for this latest remake of The Blob remain under wraps, but… I’m sure you can use your imagination.
The original film was followed by a 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, directed by Larry Hagman of all people. Chuck Russell directed the first remake of The Blob in 1988, which featured much more gruesome effects. Although it was a box office failure at the time, the film has developed a strong following.

If the "John Wick" films are any indication, action heroes could always use a little canine companionship. It just so happens that there's a long-standing aspect of law enforcement where the dog and human relationship is already built-in: The K-9 unit.
You've likely seen numerous buddy cop movies, and even a handful of K-9 films. However, those movies tend to lean heavily on the comedy aspects of man's best friend fighting bad guys. Witness the old Rin Tin Tin series, or the films "K-9" and "Turner & Hooch," for starters. Even last year's Channing Tatum vehicle with the world's most inspired title, "Dog," milked its military mutt more for melodrama than action.
That all changes with "Muzzle," a new film from director John Stalberg Jr. that stars Aaron Eckhart as K-9 cop Jake Rosser. When Jake loses his pup partner, Ace, after a deadly shootout with drug dealers, he...

Developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Game Studios, the video game Alan Wake begins with the narrator quoting a line that was written by Stephen King – and during an interview with Eurogamer, Remedy boss Sam Lake revealed that King only charged them $1 to use that line.
In case you’re not familiar with Alan Wake (as I wasn’t before seeing the article on the Eurogamer website), Eurogamer provides the information: Alan Wake begins with a sequence where we see the title character driving through the lonely countryside, over which we hear him deliver the following lines: “Stephen King once wrote that ‘Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there’s little fun to be had in explanations; they’re antithetical to the poetry of fear.’ In a horror story, the victim keeps asking ‘Why?’ But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be one. Going simply by the awards handed out, the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival delivered on its promise to celebrate the emerging stars of both Asian and Chinese cinema.
There were Golden Goblet wins for established markets Japan and China, and those less known, including Uzbekistan. And there were some scene-stealing emotions shared up on stage at the Shanghai Grand Theater, including the moments when two of China’s biggest stars, Hu Ge and Da Peng, were jointly awarded the festival’s best actor prize and then shared memories of their long-lasting friendship.
Japanese director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri was certainly swept up by the occasion, as China’s major festival event marked a return to normalcy — and a return of international guests — after the travel restrictions and assorted uncertainties of the global pandemic.

The Shanghai International Film Festival, China’s most prestigious movie industry event, kicks off its 30th-anniversary edition Friday night. It will be the first version of the festival that’s easily accessible to the global film community since 2019, after the past three editions were either canceled or rendered difficult to attend by strict Covid-19 travel restrictions at the time.
This year, film stars from at home and afar will descend on China’s commercial capital to celebrate the ongoing comeback of China’s movie business. The Shanghai International Film Festival unveiled the competition selection for its 25th-anniversary edition Monday, featuring a lineup heavy on local Chinese titles, as well as substantial inclusion from Iran and Japan. Notably, though, festival organizers chose not to include a single film from the U.S. movie industry in their 2023 competition lineup.
The 2023 Shanghai festival, running June 9-18, will be the first version of the event that’s easily accessible to the global film industry since the Covid-19 pandemic began in early 2020. Last year, the festival was canceled in the wake of Shanghai’s monthlong Covid-19 lockdown and the government’s strict travel restrictions at the time. The festival was held the previous two years, but it became an almost entirely domestic Chinese affair, as flights in and out of China were hard to come by at the time (and all travelers had to endure lengthy and expensive hotel quarantines...

The 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, June 9 to 18, has unveiled the titles in contention for awards in its four main feature-length sections: main competition, Asian New Talent, Animation film and documentary. These are eligible for the festival’s prestigious Golden Goblet Awards, winners of which will be announced at the Shanghai Grand Theater on the evening of June 17.
While Siff remains the only mainland China festival to be accredited as a so-called A-list event by the International Federation of Film Producers (Fiapf), its selections are largely separate and distinct from those at other major international festivals.
While the lineup includes nine mainland Chinese titles, two from Hong Kong and five from Iran, there are, for instance, no films that hail from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Korea.
Feature Film Competition
“All Ears” Dir. Liu Jiayin (China)
“Dust To Dust” Dir. Jonathan Li (China)
“Good Autumn, Mommy” Dir.

Shudder & Studio71’s Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting-produced V/H/S/99 isn’t even out yet and we’re already rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85!
The news was announced out of the New York Comic Con where Shudder is putting our V/H/S/99 on display ahead of the October 20th release date.
Directors are already locked for V/H/S/85 and filming is currently underway for release in 2023.
Here’s who we lined up:
The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus. Bruckner, who also directed Searchlight’s The Night House, just celebrated the release of his Hellraiser reimaging. We’ve been huge fans of Bruckner since he co-directed The Signal and also absolutely love his Netflix creature feature The Ritual.

Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that Lakeshore Records will release the Hellraiser (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on October 7 as well. And today we’re debuting an exclusive track from the score!
Ben Lovett composed the score for Hulu’s brand new Hellraiser movie, and the track you can listen to down below takes you deep inside the Puzzle Box. It’s titled, fittingly, “Blood Box.”
Lovett tells Bloody Disgusting, “How does one approach music for a Hellraiser film without the outsized influence of Christopher Young’s original score?
