Jonathan Majors has been sentenced to one year of domestic violence counselling following his conviction for reckless assault and harassment last year.
US actor Majors avoided any custodial time for the crime, which carried a potential one-year jail sentence. He must participate in-person in the 52-week LA-based intervention programme, and must also continue mental- health therapy as part of his sentencing.
Passing the sentence on Monday, April 8, New York judge Michael Gaffey issued a permanent protection order against any contact from Majors with his former partner Grace Jabbari. Majors also cannot apply for or own a gun.

A New York judge decided today that Jonathan Majors will still be sentenced next week on his assault and harassment conviction.
Judge Michael Gaffey has denied the defense motion to set aside the verdicts and strip the guilty results against the Creed III actor that a jury delivered on December 18 last year. With this last Hail Mary effort now dead, Majors will be sentenced on April 8, as previously scheduled.
The one-time Marvel star potentially faces up to a year behind bars.
Neither Majors’ top lawyer Priya Chaudhry nor the Manhattan District Attorney’s office responded to request for comment on the new ruling. If and when they do, this post will be updated.

Jonathan Majors has been sued by his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari for alleged assault, battery and defamation from incidents dating between 2021 and 2023. Last December, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault against Jabbari from a March 2023 altercation in New York City.
Jabbari filed her suit, which was obtained by Variety, in New York federal court on Tuesday and accused Majors of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution and defamation. The defamation allegation comes from the “Good Morning America” interview Majors gave after his conviction in which the actor said he “never laid [his] hands on a woman.” In the December trial, Majors’ attorney Priya Chaudhry repeatedly characterized Jabbari as lying about the injuries she sustained in the March 2023 incident.

Now that the Oscar winners are known, we can determine the other winners: the studios’ and distributors’ strategic release decisions that impacted results.
Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.
Surprisingly, the universal non-factor appeared to be SAG strike, which constrained promotion. “Oppenheimer” completed most cast appearances in time, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” had press stockpiled from Cannes. The French “Anatomy of a Fall” was unaffected.
“The Holdovers,” along with “Priscilla,” took the biggest chances with their October releases. Both made platform debuts on the same day. Sofia Coppola’s biopic showed a faster response, but Alexander Payne’s film found awards success (as well as a near-equal box office haul and bigger home...

Jonathan Majors’ sentencing date has been delayed until April 8 after his defense team filed a motion to set aside the verdict.
The Creed III actor was convicted in December of reckless assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and harassment in the second degree, which is a violation. The charges carry a potential sentence of up to one year in prison. The sentencing was initially set to take place Tuesday. Majors appeared virtually for the hearing, in which prosecutors said they needed time to respond to the motion, which was filed Monday.
The charges stem from an incident on March 25 between Majors and his ex-partner Grace Jabbari. Jabbari testified that while the two were riding in a car, she saw a text on his phone suggesting he was cheating on her and grabbed it from him. She said the actor then injured her, including prying her finger from the phone...

This year, Sundance saw big deals go down for “A Real Pain”, “It’s What’s Inside”, “Presence” (Neon), and “My Old Ass” as well as smaller acquisitions for “Kneecap” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Ghostlight” (IFC Films), and “Ibelin”(Netflix).
It’s not the same bull market as the old days, but we’ll take it. And while streamers made their presence felt with the two largest acquisitions to date, it’s clear that for most of these films theatrical will be part of their lifecycles. But is that a smart move?
Based on last year’s results, the answer is: Could be. Domestic box office from all Sundance 2023 films was the best for any year since Covid. At around $100 million, it quadrupled the take from 2022 Festival titles (around $25 million). All told, about two thirds of the 2023 films have some sort of domestic distribution, including streaming outlets. Of these, about a dozen films have yet to open.

Many factors drive an Oscar nomination, but a film’s release strategy can make the crucial difference.
“Oppenheimer” (13 nominations) and “Barbie” (8 nominations) stand out as brilliantly handled releases. Shutouts like “Origin” (Neon), “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight), “Air” (Amazon), “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (Apple), and “Saltburn” (MGM) prove that no distributor is immune.
However, when it comes to the distributors with the best track record, there are two: Disney had 20 nominations across Searchlight (12), 20th Century Studios (2), and 1 each for National Geographic Documentary Films, Pixar, Searchlight/Hulu/Disney+, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney Branded Television and Disney+.
And then there’s Netflix, a behemoth that doesn’t do sub-brands. It had 18 nominations: 7 for “Maestro,” 2 each for “Nyad” and “Society of the Snow,” and 1 each for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “May December,” “American Symphony,” “The After,” “El Conde,” “Rustin,” and “Nimona.” Theatrical releases for all of these films were modest at best,...

When a magnificently gnarled Ed Harris, wearing stringy Argus Filch hair and chomping on a horned beetle in a moment of psychotic rage is far from the weirdest thing in a movie, you know you’re in for a wild experience. That’s what Brit director Rose Glass delivers in Love Lies Bleeding, a lesbian neo-noir drenched in brooding nightscapes, violent crime and more hardcore KStew cool than has ever been packaged in such a potent concentrate. Jonathan Majors’ Magazine Dreams is officially back on the market. Nearly a year after Searchlight Pictures acquired the body-building drama, the specialty arm of Walt Disney Studios has quietly returned rights of the movie to the filmmakers, who will now shop it to other buyers.
The move comes mere weeks after Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, stemming from an incident involving his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari. Searchlight delivered the news to the Magazine Dreams team late last week that it would not be releasing the film, according to sources.
Searchlight had no comment.
Magazine Dreams debuted to fanfare last January at Sundance, where Majors’ performance as amateur body builder Killian Maddox earned him rave reviews and early awards buzz. The film’s director, Elijah Bynum, was hailed as the next big director.
Searchlight bought the film for what sources say was around $2 million in February 2023. It was mapping out a late-year awards season campaign.

Searchlight Pictures has dropped “Magazine Dreams” starring Jonathan Majors and returned the film’s rights to the filmmakers, who intend to again shop it on the open market, IndieWire has confirmed.
Searchlight acquired the movie out of last year’s Sundance Film Festival and slated it for release during awards season, but pulled it from its release calendar after Majors was arrested on March 25 for assault and harassment roughly a month after “Magazine Dreams” was acquired.
Majors last month was found guilty of assault, leading Disney to fire him from his duties as Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, THR reported it was unlikely “Magazine Dreams” would ever be released by Searchlight, even directly to streaming on Hulu. But rather than sit on a shelf, the film has a chance to see the light of day elsewhere should the filmmakers find an interested buyer.
Searchlight had no comment.

After nearly one year under Disney’s Searchlight banner, the buzzy drama “Magazine Dreams” starring Jonathan Majors has found itself suddenly back on the market. Searchlight Pictures, the specialty division of Walt Disney Studios, has discreetly returned the rights for the bodybuilding film to its producers, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
With Searchlight now out of the picture, the filmmakers will try to court new buyers and distributors for the indie project. The reversal marks a turn for a movie that initially seemed headed for Disney’s arthouse pipeline in 2023.
The decision came after Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment in his New York domestic violence case. The “Creed III” actor was accused of physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend in March. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 6.
Searchlight initially pulled the film last October from the release slate. Searchlight initially acquired “Magazine Dreams” at last year’s Sundance.

Jonathan Majors has been let go from the Dennis Rodman feature 48 Hours in Vegas, and Lionsgate is no longer developing the film, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The news comes ahead of a Feb. 6 sentencing for Majors on assault and harassment convictions stemming from an incident involving ex-partner Grace Jabbari in March.
Hours after Majors was found guilty in December, Disney dropped the actor as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. THR reported earlier this week that his movie Magazine Dreams, which was the toast of the Sundance Film Festival last year, is unlikely to get a release from Searchlight.
Lord Miller is behind 48 Hours in Vegas, which features a script from Jordan VanDina that focuses on Rodman taking a mind-clearing trip to Las Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals. The getaway was featured in the Michael Jordan-centric ESPN docuseries The Last Dance that aired in 2020.

Jonathan Majors’ conviction for domestic violence has reportedly prompted Searchlight Pictures to permanently shelve the drama, Magazine Dreams.
According to reports, it looks like Searchlight Pictures may have permanently shelved Magazine Dreams, the Jonathan Majors-led bodybuilding drama that was due to be one of its key prestige films for 2023. Majors’ trial and eventual conviction for domestic violence has, according to sources, left the studio feeling that there is no way in which a release is viable.
While some have speculated that the film could skip a high-profile theatrical release and be placed ‘quietly’ on Hulu, the US streaming platform geared towards adult viewership, The Hollywood Reporter casts doubt on this possibility, citing sources that state that Disney’s ownership of both Searchlight and Hulu make this impossible. A year ago, Jonathan Majors embarked on a 29-hour drive from his home in New York City to Park City, Utah, where he unveiled the body building drama Magazine Dreams to rapturous reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. It was the start of what was supposed to be a banner year, which was to include blockbuster roles and an awards season campaign for Magazine Dreams.
That dream has been put on hold as the actor awaits a Feb. 6 sentencing for assault and harassment convictions following a March 2023 incident involving ex-partner Grace Jabbari.
The career fallout for Majors has been severe, with Disney-owned Marvel Studios dropping him as chief villain Kang the Conqueror hours after his conviction. And the fate of Magazine Dreams is still in the balance at esteemed specialty studio Searchlight, also owned by Disney.

The Jonathan Majors assault trial finally took place last month. The actor, who was seen recently on season 2 of Marvel Studios’ Loki, had been awaiting trial for most of 2023, and the jury found him guilty of reckless assault in the third degree, which is a misdemeanour, and of harassment in the second degree, which is a violation. The fallout was swift, with the actor’s career grinding to a halt. Majors had started the year with his career flying high after being featured as the villain, Kang, in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and as the opponent in Creed III. He was also ready to release another film, Magazine Dreams, which had already garnered him some acclaim. Monday morning, Majors appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America for his first interview since the whole incident transpired.

In his first interview since a a jury found the actor guilty of assault and harassment, actor Jonathan Majors again denied striking ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
Majors told ABC News anchor Linsey Davis he was “absolutely shocked” by the verdict. “How was that possible?” he questioned. “Based off the evidence — based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence.”
The “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” star specifically denies hitting Jabbari in the face, twisting her arm behind her back, and fracturing her middle finger. “I wish to God I knew” how those injuries happened, he told “Good Morning America.” There’s “no question” he did not cause them, he added.
The only thing Majors says he broke is Jabbari’s heart. He says he should have been “brave” enough to leave the relationship instead of “stepping out.” Majors maintains he was “reckless” with Jabbari’s “heart,” not her body. Jabbari...

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. 2023 was supposed to be an excellent year for movies. Now that people were no longer reluctant to return to the theatres due to Covid, the year was expected to be peppered with blockbusters, making this one of the highest-grossing years in memory. After all, there were Marvel movies, DC movies, new stars, and a pipeline of film that didn’t seem like it would dry up soon.
Of course, things ended up a little different, with Hollywood brought to a standstill by strikes. At the same time, once influential franchises started to wane when pitted against an incredibly weary public hungry for something new. Indeed, it was a pretty dramatic year overall, so here at JoBlo, we’re counting down some of the biggest pop culture stories of the year.

Has there ever been a rise and fall quite as swift and dramatic as that of Jonathan Majors? 2023 started off as a killer year for Majors. After years as an up-and-comer, he had three films set to debut within the first three months of the year. His two big studio films, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III, seemed poised to make him a real-deal movie star, while his indie film, Magazine Dreams, was going to serve as an acting showcase.
Indeed, when the film debuted last January at Sundance, many believed his tortured, Travis Bickle-like role would win him an Oscar nomination (I was one of them in my review). His character, Killian Maddox, a wanna-be bodybuilder with serious anger issues, was a distinct creation for him and director Elijah Bynum. The movie quickly sold to Fox Searchlight, and a December 2023 release date was set. Everyone assumed...

Marvel Studios has parted ways with Jonathan Majors — the actor cast to play Kang, the central antagonist in the Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — after he was convicted on Dec. 18 of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault of Grace Jabbari, his ex-girlfriend. A source close to the studio confirmed the decision to Variety.
In the verdict, Majors was also found not guilty of one count of intentional assault in the third degree and one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree.
The actor was arrested on March 25 on assault and harassment charges, after Jabbari accused Majors of assaulting her in the backseat of a private car after she took his phone to read a text message he’d received from another woman. After an estimated four hours of deliberation over the course of three days, a New York jury has found Marvel and "Creed III" star Jonathan Majors guilty of harassment and assault in the third degree as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Majors called 911 on March 25, 2023, claiming that he had found his former partner Grace Jabbari unconscious in their apartment, and was arrested after police discovered Jabbari had an injured finger and a laceration behind her ear. Majors was facing four charges of assault, aggravated harassment, and harassment. He pled not guilty to all charges.
It's important to note that Jabbari was not the person who brought the charges against Majors, but rather the state of New York through a criminal trial. As THR notes, this means "the burden of proof is higher for the jury who had to find...
