Whatever one thinks of the highly controversial TV series Euphoria, there’s one thing no one can deny. No show of this era has been a better launching point for the careers of young movie stars. Zendaya is currently enjoying huge success on the big screen, thanks to Dune: Part Two and Challengers, while Sydney Sweeney is just on the other side of a rare rom-com box office success with Anyone But You and has also just produced and starred in the excellent horror flick Immaculate. Jacob Elordi received a bit of praise for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the Sofia Coppola film Priscilla last year and will next play Frankenstein’s Monster for Guillermo del Toro.
Next up is Hunter Schafer, who is set to splatter the screen in blood with the very creepy-looking horror film Cuckoo. This isn’t her first film role, of course. The young...

“Chicken for Linda!” has been acquired for domestic distribution by Gkids. The hand-painted comedy-drama will play in competition at this year’s Annecy International Film Festival and was an official Cannes selection in this year’s Acid program.
“Linda veut du poulet!” is directed by husband-and-wife team Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach, who work together frequently on both live-action and animation productions.
Malta primarily works in live-action filmmaking and is best known for “Simple Women” (co-wrote with Laudenbach). An important film: there are no other words to describe “The Lost Boys of Mercury” (Les Oubliés de la Belle Étoile), the second documentary feature by French director Clémence Davigo, which is in competition at Visions du Réel, in Nyon, Switzerland.
Important because it reveals a tragedy hidden for more than half a century: that of the children under the care of the French social services in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s placed in the La Belle Étoile Catholic correctional center in the mountain village of Mercury, Savoie. There, for three decades, hundreds of them were mistreated, humiliated, starved, beaten, tortured with thumbtacks stuck under their nails, and some were sexually abused.
The film offers the first form of recognition to those who lived through hell there, by allowing them to be heard at last.
The research work carried out by the director, who travelled all over France to gather the words of former residents,...

How might one sum up 2022 and all of its movie-related (stop-motion) monkey business?
These past 12 months have been a pretty darn bumpy ride, complete with their share of hand-wringing over the future of cinema. On the flip side, they saw the movie industry make vital gains in representation, all while unique, challenging films misfired left and right financially, and even superhero tentpoles caught the box office blues. Meanwhile, other movies went far harder than expected, giving us writers a free excuse to use the term "maximalist" many times over. (No shade here -- it's a fun word!) They also taught us valuable lessons about the power of radical empathy, the value of vulnerability, and the joys of punching fascists, colonialists, and other oppressors in the face.
But before we get into the top 10 of it all, some honorable mentions -- call them my alternate top 10. Their ranks include:

I want to use this blurb to acknowledge a couple of films I’m yet to see that I feel, through a combination of my own personal taste and their critical reception, maybe would’ve made the cut had I seen them this year. The first of which is idiosyncratic anime Director Masaaki Yuasa’s Inu-Oh, a rock opera set amongst 14th century Japanese performers. I’ve been a fan of Yuasa’s bombastic and enveloping style ever since I watched The Tatami Galaxy a few years ago and am dying to see the latest in his ever-growing oeuvre of impressive works. The second film is Kogonada’s After Yang. Anyone who knows me on a personal level will know how much I loved his debut Columbus and to see the filmmaker follow up that up with a quiet, reflective sci-fi sounds too good to miss. That all being said,...

It's a tale as old as time, but it's back with a twist! "Beauty and the Beast" has been adapted in a new format to mark over three decades since the release of Disney's animated film. Titled "Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration," the new ABC special coincides with the 30th anniversary of the timeless fantasy's historic Academy Award nomination for best picture, the first time an animated movie had been tapped in that category.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed "Crazy Rich Asians," the reimagination of Disney's beloved story sees H.E.R. (aka Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) putting her spin on the lead character of Belle. In an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip shared with Popsugar, the singer, songwriter, and actor dishes on stepping into her role.

There may be something there that definitely wasn’t there before in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. The original Belle and Gaston, Paige O’Hara, and Richard White, as well as legendary Disney composer Alan Menken, will make special cameos in ABC‘s live-action Beauty and the Beast TV musical on December 15. Blending live-action with animation, the Beauty and the Beast 30th anniversary special airs Thursday, December 15 at 8/7c on ABC. Menken, O’Hara, and White will appear in the opening number, “Belle,” as townspeople in Belle’s “quiet” French village. Grammy-winner H.E.R. plays the Disney princess, with Broadway star Joshua Henry playing Gaston in this iteration. O’Hara will play the bookshop owner who helps keep Belle’s love of reading alive, and White will play the baker who dishes out the memorable line, “Marie! The baguettes! Hurry up!” Menken, meanwhile, will appear to play the piano in one of the songs.

Let us pull up a chair. Disney fans are cordially invited to be ABC’s guest for Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration of the fairy tale as old as time. The 1991 classic — the first animated film to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture — is being feted with a two-hour special that, similar to 2019’s The Little Mermaid Live!, will combine scenes from the movie with live performances of songs in front of an audience. Playing the bookish Belle and the cursed and lonely Beast are Grammy-winning R&b songstress Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson (stage name H.E.R.) and Broadway vet Josh Groban. Shows about high school are hardly new. From early examples like "Happy Days" and "The Wonder Years" to the '90s heyday of "Dawson's Creek" and "Beverly Hills 90210," teenage drama has always been a part of the television landscape. Many of us look back on our time in high school with a mix of horror and embarrassment, but the years between 9th and 12th grade have never been more stressful than in Sam Levinson's "Euphoria." The HBO drama is a daring mix of grit and glitter that follows 17-year-old Rue Bennet (Zendaya) as she struggles to navigate her junior year while battling a debilitating drug addiction. "Euphoria" has faced its share of criticism (most notably from D.A.R.E) that the show glamorizes drug use. Defenders say it's an authentic portrayal of a disease that affects millions around the world. Executive producer and star Zendaya says their goal is not to be role models,...

Tom Felton looks different. It may seem like a cliché to point that out, but it’s the first thought I have as we shake hands inside a sparsely filled canalside pub in King’s Cross, north London. The man that sits before me couldn’t be further from Draco Malfoy. Long gone is the bleached blond hairdo, the snide Slytherin glint in his eye. He wears a white woollen cardigan, and sits drinking tea; before we speak, he politely explains that he has to first make a phone call to his mother. Some villain.
Felton is here because he has written a memoir, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard. It’s been 11 years since the final Harry Potter film, The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and more than two decades since he was first cast as the flaxen-haired Draco. Despite a memorable role in 2011’s...

Keke Palmer has never been afraid to shoot her shot for a role, but this time the fans are doing it for her!
A video of the “Nope” actress showing off different outfits for Vogue sparked a conversation about casting her as a comic-book hero when Palmer briefly appears in a black leather outfit and says she’s “manifesting a superhero role” because it would make a perfect costume. While many of the suggestions were the popular casting choices for Black actresses – regardless of personality – one particular fan’s idea went viral.
TikToker @jacobfordridgway noted that although suggestions like Storm and Bumblebee were understandable, Palmer would work best in a role that tapped into her real-life superpower – her vivaciousness.
“If you want her to deliver a powerhouse lead, she’s got to have room to play in that role,” he explains, suggesting that Palmer should play X-Men’s Rogue, giving her a “fun,...

Gkids has acquired North American rights to Unicorn Wars — the latest genre-bending animated feature from Goya and Annecy Cristal-winning director Alberto Vázquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children) — ahead of its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest. The horror-comedy will be released in theaters by Gkids in early 2023, following its domestic release in Spain this fall.
Billed as Bambi meets Apocalypse Now, Unicorn Wars‘ logline is as follows:
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war.

Set during an ancestral war between teddy bears and unicorns, the horror-comedy film follows Bluet and Tubby, teddy bear brothers who are polar opposites to each other. When their time at teddy bear bootcamp leads to a combat tour in the Magic Forest, Bluet and Tubby’s complicated history and tense relationship could affect the fate of the war, including whether the teddy bears will fulfill the prophecy and usher in a new era.
“Unicorn Wars” is directed and written by illustrator Alberto Vázquez. Prior to this deal, Gkids distributed Vázquez’s Goya Award-winning feature “Birdboy: The Forgotten Children” and animated short “Decorado.”

"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.
The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

Belle (Mamoru Hosoda)
If a name can trigger nostalgia, don’t be surprised when the occasional sense of deja vu sets in while watching Belle, a dazzling near-future tech fantasia wrapped around a tale, yes, as old as time. Directed by Mamoru Hosoda and mostly set in a vast online world of sweeping musical numbers and weightless action sequences, it tells of Suzu, an awkward teenager (as if there were any other kind) who finds quick fame performing as the pop-singer Belle: her avatar on a hugely popular social media platform called U that looks like a sugary cocktail of Tik Tok and “The Oasis” from Spielberg’s Ready Player One. – Rory O. Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Virtual reality is as good a place as any to meet people, especially during a pandemic. In documentary helmer Joe Hunting’s nonjudgmental plunge into the fast-evolving metaverse — set entirely in the realm of VRChat, where thousands of players reinvent themselves behind the avatars of their choice — we meet couples who fell in love online, hard-of-hearing outsiders who find a new way to connect with others and lonely souls who say their online friends saved their lives. While the real world was losing its collective mind (Hunting started “filming” in December 2020), these folks were giving lap dances and house parties in cyberspace.
At times, “We Met in Virtual Reality” — which world premiered at the (virtual) Sundance Film Festival last January, and now finds its way into (virtual) release via HBO Max — feels like a feature-length infomercial for this relatively new means of no-contact connection. We're big fans of director Hosoda Mamoru here at ScreenAnarchy, and each new film of his is followed with interest over here. Our readers tend to agree: last year, my most-viewed article was about the trailer to Hosoda's film Belle. Our Guillem Rosset called it in his review "a great film" and "(a) visual spectacle that will leave you with a nice warm feeling in your heart". True words. And on a sidenote: I was allowed to interview Hosoda last year and we talked extensively about Belle. So it won't come as a surprise when I say I was keenly awaiting the home release of this film. And courtesy of the Scottish firm Anime Limited, there is now a beautiful limited (numbered even) Blu-ray/4K-uhd combo...

Monty Norman, the British composer who wrote the propulsive theme for the James Bond films, died Monday after a short illness, according to a post on his official website. He was 94.
Producer Cubby Broccoli, who had worked with Norman by backing the stage musical Belle, about murderer Hawley Crippen, asked the composer to come up with the score for the first Bond film, Dr. No (1962), after he and Harry Saltzman had acquired the rights to Ian Fleming’s spy.
The deal was sealed when the producers offered to fly Norman and his then-wife, actress-singer Diana Coupland, to Jamaica, where the movie was being filmed, all expenses paid. “Well, that was the clincher for me!” Norman said in a story posted on his website. “I thought, even if Dr. No turns out to be a stinker, at least we’d have sun, sea and sand to show for it!

Monty Norman, the composer behind the iconic James Bond theme, has died at the age of 94.
