It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.

Heading into this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the category previously known as Best Variety Sketch Series has been rebranded as Best Scripted Variety Series. The TV academy created this and the Best Talk Series categories in 2015 as replacements for their catch-all variety series one in order to better recognize achievement in both subgenres. This year, 12 scripted variety shows are on the first-round nominations ballot, which means three final contenders will be revealed on July 12. This entrant amount is up from eight in 2022 and nine in 2021.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their ballots for their favorite programs. Unlike at the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.
Whereas they could previously make as many selections as they wanted in each category, there are now limits based on the predetermined sizes of the eventual lineups.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Taylor Jenkins Reid is currently taking Hollywood by storm and honestly, it was only a matter of time. Bookworms have become very familiar with the buzzy author over the years, as her most recent novels debut to fanfare and continue to top bestsellers lists. But lately, Jenkins Reid has also been making waves in the world of streaming TV.
The series adaptation of her novel "Daisy Jones & The Six" is currently airing on Amazon's Prime Video, with two more of her novels slated for adaptation at Hulu ("Malibu Rising") and Netflix ("The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo"). She also has a romcom on the way, with the book-to-movie adaptation of "One True Loves" expected to arrive in theaters this April. All the while, Jenkins has been hard at work penning yet another project: "My Ex-Friend's Wedding."

“The Late Late Show” will be coming to an end with James Corden’s exit at the end of the show’s 2023 season. Next in line to replace the coveted time slot, however, is a reboot of the series “@Midnight”.
A source tells Et, “CBS is eyeing ‘@Midnight’ to replace ‘The Late Late Show’. They’re ready for something different. Hosted late night talk shows are expensive to produce.” CBS, meanwhile, is not commenting on the potential new late-night lineup.
“@Midnight” ran 600 episodes on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017. Its new iteration is said to have Stephen Colbert serving as executive producer, per a report from Deadline, alongside Funny or Die, the company behind the original series on Comedy Central.
The move gives “The Late Show” host another hour of late-night that he is involved in, in addition to also executive producing Comedy Central series “Tooning Out The News” and “Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God...

In April 2022, James Corden announced that he would be stepping down from his duties at "The Late Late Show" after hosting the late-night staple since 2015. Many speculated about who would take his spot as the successor to Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, and Craig Ferguson in the 12:35 a.m. time slot on CBS' schedule. But as we move closer to Corden's final days on the show, which are scheduled to air in spring 2023, no one has officially emerged as the next host. And it appears that the reason for this is that the network is doing away with the series entirely in favor of a fan-favorite format that debuted a decade ago that was canceled after 600 episodes.

There have been few (if any) days in 2022 when a piece of devastating news — the ongoing plague, myriad mass shootings, the war abroad and the daily incursion on democracy at home, to name just a few — doesn’t elicit one very specific Gif or screen grab on social media. Doom-scroll long enough, and you’re bound to see it … a man, obscured by a grotesque human-skin suit, offering a despondent stare above his defeated quote: “I don’t even want to be around anymore.”
It’s not really a cry for help, just one of the many moments from Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson that’s been clipped, cropped and captioned by fans on Twitter and Instagram. Well, this is interesting.
CBS Studios has news today for Paramount+ subscribers in the US and in Australia.
A new NCIS will be produced for Paramount+ Australia and Network 10, and a new Seal Team movie will be produced for the streaming service in the U.S., it was announced today by George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+.
There's no word as to whether American audiences will get the opportunity to watch the Australian programming, but it would sure be a shame if this international goodness wasn't available here.
For the first time, CBS Studios will expand one of its biggest and most successful global franchises into a new international edition, NCIS: Sydney.
The series, which is slated for 2023, will feature local stories with Aussie actors and producers and be filmed in one of the world’s most scenic harbor cities.

Carrie Byalick, a longtime Hollywood publicist who has become one of comedian Stephen Colbert’s top advisers, has been named president of his production company, Spartina Productions, as it prepares to increase its number of active projects.
Byalick will supervise all aspects of Spartina, which in October set a three-year pact with CBS Studios to develop content for linear and streaming venues. Colbert’s team already produces the animated “Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News” for Paramount Plus, as well as “Fairview” and “Washingtonia” on Comedy Central. Colbert is an executive producer on the Comedy Central late-night program “Tha God’s Honest Truth With Lenard ‘Charlamagne’ McKelvey.”
Byalick joins Evelyn McGee Colbert, Colbert’s spouse, and Chris Licht and Tom Purcell, executive producers of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” as principals in the company.
Those familiar with Colbert’s business relationships know he has long trusted Byalick’s counsel implicitly.

Paramount+ will explore the world of esports in Players, a new comedic docu-style series from Peabody Award-winning American Vandal co-creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, Funny or Die, Riot Games and CBS Studios.
The ViacomCBS streaming service has given a series order to the project, which is said to be in the vein of Netflix/ESPN Films’ Emmy-winning Michael Jordan docuseries The Last Dance.
Co-created and executive produced by Yacenda and Perrault, who also directs, Players follows a fictional pro League of Legends esports team, as they pursue their first championship after years of close calls and heartache. To win it all, they will need their prodigy, a 17-year-old rookie, and their 27-year-old veteran to put their egos aside and work together.

“We take our journalism shockingly seriously for a cartoon,” admits “Tooning Out the News” showrunner R.J. Fried in our recent webchat. He continues, “We have a research team of people with cable news backgrounds. As much as we joke around, we don’t joke around.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News” is an animated news parody on Paramount+. Its segments satirize various cable news shows and feature interviews with real life guests. This year the series has received an Emmy nomination for Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series. As well as producing and writing on the show, Fried plays news anchor James Smartwood.

Exclusive: David Letterman’s “Stupid Pet Tricks” is making a television comeback. TBS has greenlighted a 10-episode half-hour comedy-variety series inspired by the iconic segment Letterman did for three decades on NBC’s Late Night and CBS’ Late Show, with Sarah Silverman as host. The project hails from The Jay & Tony Show’s Jay Blumenfield and Tony Marsh and Letterman’s Worldwide Pants. Blumenfield, Marsh, Letterman, Silverman and Amy Zvi executive produce.
Stupid Pet Tricks, the series, promises to retain all the original segment’s charm, silly fun and appreciation for the often-absurd bond between humans and their animal friends, with Silverman infusing it with a quirky vibe. Each episode will feature a parade of pets performing the most ridiculous, impressive and extraordinary tricks on a studio stage before a live audience, interweaving comedic bits along with games, as pet parents join their furry (or scaley!) friends in the quest...

Stephen Colbert is punchy.
It is the first night of his second week back with a live studio audience doing CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” at the Ed Sullivan Theater. He’s still on an adrenaline high from his return to the 400-seat Broadway venue after 15 long months in the wilderness of delivering monologues and conducting interviews without the feedback that comes from working in front of a crowd.
Dressed in a sharply creased dark gray suit, in contrast to the plaids and Pendletons he favored during the pandemic, Colbert, 57, bounds onto the stage on the evening of June 21, minutes before the taping starts, high-kicking and punching the air with abandon. “The Late Show” house band punctuates his every move with a cacophony of sound. Conan O’Brien’s tenure at TBS might be coming to an end but the comedian, creator, and host of “Conan” is setting his sights on a new television show for the HBO Max streaming service.
It’s unclear what O’Brien’s HBO Max show will be like. WarnerMedia stated last November that the comedian’s “Conan Without Borders” shows, where he travels to other countries, would continue alongside his upcoming HBO Max series, which suggests that his new show will be something else entirely.
Regardless, O’Brien is the latest in a recent string of comedians who have or plan on hosting a comedy show on a streaming service, a relatively new phenomenon for the medium. For streaming services there’s never been greater competition for eyeballs (and subscriber dollars) than now, especially when it comes to scripted drama and comedy programming. A decade after “Lopez Tonight” went off the air, Latinos are still waiting for another shot, writes Afro-Latina comedian Suni Reyes
I’m an Afro-Latina whose favorite thing in the world (after warm donuts) is to make people laugh. For the past decade, I’ve been creating and performing comedy on New York City’s most renowned stages. I’ve done it all: stand-up, sketch, improv, raising a child. The dream was to one day get hired as a writer or a cast member on a late-night/variety show, or (dare I dream big!) to have my own show.
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico by an immigrant mother from the Dominican Republic and a “jibarito” from Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, so my mere existence has always been political. When I started doing comedy, I noticed that the “general” American audience didn’t know much about my people or what we represented.

Jean Smart’s Queen of Sin City refuses to be dethroned in the first trailer for HBO Max’s Hacks (premiering Thursday, May 13).
Created by Broad City trio Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, the 10-episode comedy centers on “a dark mentorship” that forms between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old (relative newcomer Hannah Einbinder), according to the official logline. After more than 2,500 shows (“Eat your heart out, Celine!”), Vance’s residency is in jeopardy. That’s when her agent pairs her with a fledging comedy writer (Einbinder) in the hopes of...

One silver lining to emerge out of 2020 was Ziwe, the sharp, Brooklyn comedian who encouraged us to self-reflect, laugh, and cringe at what we saw in the mirror with her video series “Baited.” Now, she’s teamed up with A24 for her own Variety series, titled “Ziwe.” Watch the first trailer below.
Ziwe serves as showrunner, writer, and actor on the series, bringing her singular, no-holds-barred brand of funny to Showtime for her late-night debut. The trailer is packed with special guests and familiar faces, including Jane Krakowski, Bowen Yang, Phoebe Bridgers, Cristin Milioti, Jeremy O. Harris, Fran Lebowitz, Patti Harrison, Cole Escola, and many more.
This looks to be the kind of in-your-face comedy pushing up against social norms that made “Baited” such a viral hit. In her weekly Instagram Live show that ran last summer, Ziwe grilled her guests in a scorching one-on-one targeting their privilege, white or otherwise,...

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have lined up their third Netflix project: The duo are developing a series adaptation of Richard Powers’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Overstory, with Hugh Jackman also executive-producing, our sister site Deadline reports.
The drama is described as “a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of the natural world. It tells the story of a world alongside ours that is vast, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive and almost invisible to us. A handful of disparate people learn how to see that world and are drawn into its unfolding catastrophe.
