The “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series at Paramount+ has cast Holly Hunter in a lead role, Variety has learned.
Hunter’s character will serve as the captain and chancellor of the Academy, presiding over both the faculty and a new class of Starfleet cadets as they learn to navigate the galaxy in the 32nd century.
“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on ‘Starfleet Academy’ is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of ‘Star Trek.'”
“Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting in Toronto later this summer, featuring the largest contiguous set ever constructed for a “Star Trek” series, a central academic atrium that will span two stories and include an amphitheater, classrooms,...

Based on an original screenplay by Matt Roller, which made the Black List in 2021, the film’s plot is under wraps. Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen will produce for 21 Laps, with Emily Feher overseeing the project for the company.
Abbi and the Eighth Wonder reunites DuVall with TriStar on the heels of Happiest Season, the hit LGBTQ+ romantic comedy, starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis, which she co-wrote and directed. There’s a very specific brand of broad silliness that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have championed across comedies like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor. Their shows exist in a fluid reality where it feels like anything is possible.
Meredith Scardino worked on the latter of these two series and her original creation, Girls5Eva, is very much cut from the same absurdist cloth. The music industry lampoon received plenty of attention when it first premiered on Peacock, only to fade away like a forgotten pop music group. It’s exciting that Netflix has rescued the effort, which is just as hilarious as ever, yet Girls5Eva still feels destined to resonate with a niche crowd instead of becoming the streaming service’s next big hit. This comedy can hit the right notes, but it’s not going to pack a stadium full of fans.

Netflix is diving into the comedy scene with its latest acquisition, ‘The Fifth Wheel,’ a film that will feature reality TV icon and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian in a starring role. This project marks a significant shift for Kardashian, known predominantly for her reality show fame, as she steps into a more diverse acting role.
In ‘The Fifth Wheel,’ Kardashian is set to play the central character, surrounded by an all-female ensemble cast. The specifics about the film’s plot are currently under wraps, but the title hints at a comedic take on being the odd one out in different situations.
The comedy film is co-written by Paula Pell, an established name in the comedy world and a former writer for ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Pell’s comedic flair is well-known, having penned the laugh-out-loud movie ‘Sisters.’ She has also recently starred in the series ‘Girls5eva,’ where her comedic talents shine through.

It's been 41 years since "Cheers" premiered, and 30 years since it's ended. Although other popular sitcoms like "The Bill Cosby Show" and "Newhart" gave it a run for its money, it's clear by now that "Cheers" has most effectively withstood the test of the time. When the average person thinks of '90s sitcoms, they think of "Friends" or "Seinfeld," but when you ask them to name a sitcom from the '80s, "Cheers" is almost always the first to come to mind.
It helps that so much of the "Cheers" cast has continued to have a major presence in pop culture long after the finale, even if they haven't all returned to the sheer height of popularity they had back in the '80s and early '90s. Even many of the actors who have passed away in the years since, like Kirstie Alley who died of stage four colon...

A new report says Tina Fey is being courted to take over “Saturday Night Live” for Lorne Michaels — but an NBC spokesperson is now denying such claims.
According to a source, per The New York Post, the actress and comedian is being considered to take Michaels’ current position as executive producer when the “SNL” creator, 78, eventually departs.
Though Michaels, who created the popular weekly comedy series back in 1975, hasn’t formally announced a departure, he previously spoke about leaving the show after “its 50th anniversary, which is in three years,” he told Gayle King on “CBS Mornings” in December 2021. “I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”

After being publicly fired from the show he created, it seemed Dan Harmon was done with "Community" forever. Rarely, if ever, had a mainstream U.S. television network rehired a volatile showrunner after parting ways with them. Then again, "Community" always had a David and Goliath spirit and a surprising resilience to it, so anything was possible. Still, when NBC and Sony Pictures TV decided to bring Harmon back and hand him the keys to his show once again after an underwhelming fourth season without him, Harmon didn't have time to take a victory lap. Instead, as he relayed to Uproxx in an interview, he had one question: "Who the hell is gonna write the show"?
Because the negotiations to get him back took a little while to iron out, Harmon and his core team felt like they were already behind the eight ball when it came to season 5. "So...

The NBC comedy Cheers was Ted Danson’s big break. He’s been on several hit shows since, but still, 11 years on Cheers is hard to top. Fortunately, Danson said he never felt typecast by Sam Malone after Cheers ended. That’s thanks in part to two big reasons.

It’s de rigeur now when a show is canceled: Disappointed studio execs and producers promise fans that they’ll shop their orphaned series to other outlets. Of course, most of the time, nothing happens — after all, who wants to pick up a show that no one was watching in the first place? But sometimes, the stars align: In the case of “Cobra Kai,” for example, Netflix was able to nab that show when YouTube got out of the scripted originals business, and turn it into a monster hit.
Netflix has picked up several canceled series over the years (up next: NBC’s “Manifest”). But the case of “Girls5eva” is a bit unique. The Universal TV comedy aired for two seasons on sister Peacock to raves from TV critics — but crickets in the general population. That’s despite the rapid-fire pop-culture infused comedy and music at the heart of the show,...

Nothing lasts 5eva. On Thursday, news broke that Peacock series “Girls5eva” is heading to Netflix for Season 3. The first two seasons of the Tina Fey-Robert Carlock comedy will be available on both Peacock and Netflix.
The reality is that “Girls5eva” was canceled by Peacock sometime after Season 2 concluded in June, two people with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire. The news just never went public, and negotiations between studio Universal Television and Netflix already were underway.
Despite being beloved by both Peacock execs and critics (Season 1 is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 percent score; Season 2 is “certified fresh” at 95 percent), “Girls5eva” was a consistent underperformer, we’re told.
That led to Peacock passing on a third season, a “business decision,” we’re told. In the old days, that would be a death sentence for a show. These are not the old days, and so it was...

Mr. Mayor and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend alumna Vella Lovell has been cast as a series regular opposite Joel McHale on Fox’s straight-to-series workplace comedy, Animal Control. It’s slated for a mid-season premiere.
Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling, the comedy series follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not.
Lovell will play Emily, the sweet-natured and endearingly awkward boss of the Animal Control precinct. She may be in over her head at the job, but she’s beloved by her team.
McHale portrays Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly.

With too much television, it’s almost impossible to view every piece of content that is up for consideration for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. With increases in submissions, including 171 drama series, 118 comedies and 61 limited or anthologies. Not to mention the hundreds of actors angling for very few spots. In anticipation of Tuesday’s noms, Variety’s editors have curated its own dream ballot for this year’s television achievements in selected categories.
At Variety, we also love consistency. With our ballots, we wanted to promote having 10 options in the top series categories (please do this TV Academy) and uniformity in the acting races. In the acting categories, we proceeded with eight in each. We hope the TV Academy adopts some of these trends in the future. With this large boom in television, there should be more options in the respective lineups.

The last time Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard collaborated with Maya Rudolph on a streaming comedy, it was Amazon’s Forever, an ambitiously strange and formally inventive examination of love and the afterlife. Other streaming credits for Yang have included Apple TV+’s Little America, an anything-goes anthological exploration of the immigrant experience, and the most recent season of Netflix’s Master of None, which audaciously (if not always successfully) extended the beloved, Emmy-winning series to include new characters and a new tone.
No strangers to using TV’s ever-widening landscape to tell often experimental stories, Yang and Hubbard are back with a new streaming comedy, Apple TV+’s Loot. The most unusual thing about Loot, it turns out, is where it’s airing.

Fox, fresh off its upfronts presentation, had a strong Monday night with the 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star season finales.
9-1-1 proper and 9-1-1: Lone Star, Fox’s top performing dramas of the 2021-22 season, were both steady from the previous week in their season finales Monday night. Just picked up for new seasons, 9-1-1 delivered a 0.7 demo rating and 5.23 million viewers, while Lone Star earned a 0.6 demo rating and 4.54 million viewers, per Nielsen fast affiliates. Looking back at their season premieres, both series experienced minimal loss in the demo and viewers.
To make Monday night even sweeter for Fox, 9-1-1 was the highest-rated show of primetime. CBS’ NCIS was the most-watched title, which doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise considering the series typically wins Monday’s largest audience.

April showers gave way to May flowers, and April meetings among network executives led to the cancellations and renewals of existing broadcast series. Of course, there were plenty of nail-biter decisions made in May regarding CBS’, NBC’s, Fox’s, ABC’s, and The CW’s slate.
Find all of the cancels and renewals below. We should note here that not every cancelled TV show goes away on bad terms: Among the 20-something or so series we won’t be seeing again in the 2022-23 season, there were a few preplanned decisions — like the ending of NBC’s “This Is Us” and ABC’s “Black-ish” — that got mixed in.
You’ll notice we only focused on scripted series here. Sans a handful of perennial reality standouts like CBS’ “Survivor,” which has been officially renewed for Season 43, unscripted programming kind of does its own thing on its own schedule. Yeah, the...

It felt like a TV bloodbath like no other. Thursday’s rapid-fire succession of primetime bullets took down “Magnum P.I.” and two Chuck Lorre comedies at CBS; Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” and Kenan Thompson’s “Kenan,” plus freshman drama “The Endgame” at NBC; and a large chunk of the lineup — including “Legacies,” “Charmed,” “Dynasty” and “Roswell, New Mexico” — at The CW.
And that’s not even the entire list of this week’s axed shows. Yet, this day of death — which “Legacies,” “Roswell” and “The Endgame” exec producer Julie Plec compared to the “Game of Thrones” massacre known as the “Red Wedding” — was really nothing new. In the before times, the week prior to upfronts always got nasty as shows were thrown overboard to make room for the newbies. The cycle of broadcast life, etc. etc.

Dominique Fishback holds her own opposite Samuel L. Jackson in Apple TV+’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and she says that was inspired by the strength of the character. “I wasn’t really nervous because Robyn is not nervous of Ptolemy,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “She’s not intimidated by him. So therefore, I’m not gonna do that because I’m representing this character.”
On this edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Fishback talks about “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and working with Jackson, as well as her take on the character, playing teenage roles even as she enters her 30s, her interest in astrology and how she’s enjoying her success. Later in this episode, “Mr. Mayor” star Bobby Moynihan on the joys of his ensemble comedy, which sadly was just canceled on Thursday as this episode made it to air.

TV executives just took a broad sword to the broadcast networks’ collective roster of existing series. In a swarm of cancellation and renewal announcements ahead of next week’s upfronts, NBC, The CW, and CBS scrapped a combined 13 series. Yes, all in one day.
The CW cancelled Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship’s superhero series “Naomi” after one season, just two days after the finale aired. Fellow CW DC series “Batwoman” and “Legends of Tomorrow” were shown the door previously.

Additionally on Thursday, The CW axed “Roswell, New Mexico,” “The 4400,” “Dynasty,” “In the Dark,” and the “Charmed” reboot. “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” still have summer seasons to burn off; both will...
