Lately it seems like a lot of people are up in arms about superheroes not being able to relate to the common human being. I would say “duh” but it seems a bit redundant at this point. But really there is a case to be made for this even if you don’t want to get so bent out of shape. Super-powered individuals might have the same concerns as regular people but they’re still in a class by themselves simply because they tend to have other concerns that are far and beyond what the average person might think about. Heroes that

Adam West, who was beloved for generations as the man under the crimefighting cowl in the 1960s Batman TV series, passed away yesterday at the age of 88. West had an acting career going back to the 1950s. Today, Cinelinx pays homage to a gentleman who loved his fans, as we say goodbye to Adam West

Although the Rebirth initiative has demanded much attention from readers since it kicked off last June, it’s imperative that the bounty of stellar miniseries put forth by DC in the time since don’t go overlooked. With titles such as Super Powers and Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love catering to fans of all sorts, another one we feel is worthy of your attention is that of Midnighter and Apollo.
Taking the two characters whom many would feel were the backbone of The Authority and integrating them into the DC Universe proper was indeed a bold move, considering that these two were essentially analogs for Batman and Superman. But, amazingly, they managed to retain their respective identities. That might have something to do with the fact that Midnighter has a fight computer in his brain and has a more lethal approach in his methods, but who are we to judge?...

DC in the 80s is a Webzine for the DC Comics Fans with an affinity for 80s comics. It’s fun, upbeat and engaging. Justin Francoeur and Mark Belkin keep the fan fires burning with wit and a great degree of nostalgic professionalism. I’m fascinated by the their endeavor, so I reached out to discuss it with them.
Ed Catto: Can you tell me a little bit about the site and how it came about?
Justin Francoeur: My formative years of comic book reading were during the early 80s to the early-to-mid 90s. Roughly six years ago, there wasn’t much on the Internet about DC Comics from the 80s (or it was scattered all over the place and not easy to find) so I decided to make a tumblr blog specifically spotlighting the house ads of that era. There were a lot of ‘buried gems’ in that time...

While visiting the set of "X-Men Apocalypse" and after a full day of shooting a scene where Apocalypse comes and recruits Angel with his three other horsemen, we find time to sit with director Bryan Singer in his trailer and pick his brain about what we just saw. This time around Bryan is shooting using a 3-D camera, has set this film in the 80's, and has introduced a new set of actors to play younger versions of our favorite characters.
The last scene that we have witnessed today deals with the special powers that pertain to Apocalypse. With the brush of his hands he can enhance your mutant powers as he does with Angel. Here is what Bryan had to say about his version of Apocalypse.
How has your day played out today?

This Halloween season you'll have a number of options should you decide to turn your home into a haunted house. First, you could spend hundreds of dollars on fake cobwebs and spooky-sound-effects CDs. Alternatively, you could just open up a few ectoplasmic ghost traps from your day job of busting ghosts. Or you can do as Homeland's Carrie Mathison does and simply go off your meds while plastering your living room with photos of the hundreds of people you've possibly killed over the years. Why settle for standard-issue spookiness when you can haunt yourself with devastating memories of the past? The episode title, “Super Powers,” was a clever if distressing riff on Carrie's bipolar disorder, long an essential component of Homeland's mania. Every season brings a mental breakdown of some kind, so it was probably for the best that this episode directly confronted our expectations by having Carrie incur that...

Immediate Reaction"So you want to go off your meds? Is that what you're saying? To try to figure this out?" "No." "No?" "I've already gone off them." If only Carrie had stuck with her first answer. From the second the above words were spoken, everyone watching "Homeland" knew things were about to get absolutely wild, and Carrie did not disappoint. Starting off by emotionally crippling her far-too-nice boyfriend and ending with a rifle battle in the woods, "Super Powers" brought back the Carrie most "Homeland" fans remember, for better or worse. Those standing behind the episode — as I find myself leaning — will undoubtedly champion another off-the-rails performance from Claire Danes and rightfully so. The Emmy-winner marked her territory with an hour of slow-developing character deconstruction. As Carrie dug deeper and deeper into the hole of her own making, sifting through past sins in order to protect...

Superhero movies are apparently here to stay if the Hollywood studios’ production and release schedules are any indication, and why not? Superheroes are the ultimate wish-fulfilment and it should be no surprise moviegoers flock to the cinemas to see their favourites do battle with the forces of evil. Besides the usual benefits of being a superhero such as getting the girl (or guy) and getting to wear a cool outfit, there’s also the unmatched desire to have their powers; flying, wall-crawling, incredible fighting prowess, the list is endless. But with these powers come a catch. No, not “great responsibility,” it’s continuity.
Establishing the boundaries of a character’s super powers is something every filmmaker must contend with. Even audience members already familiar with a character from print need to be shown how those powers act in the “reality” of the movie. Captain America’s power is...

I have to admit that growing up in the '80s we had some pretty badass toys. They don't make toys like this anymore. I loved playing with action figures growing up, what kid didn't!? I have a lot of fond memories of those days and the hours upon hours I would spend playing with my action figures. I just unleashed my imagination. I wish I still had some of these toys from when I was kid, but I don't. Some of them have literally been shot and buried. Damn my kid self for not taking better care of these things! It was always fun to mix and match the toys while playing out my ridiculous crossover storylines.
You can check out my twelve selections below, and I've included a vintage '80s toy commercial for each one. If I left out one of your favorites, please let me know in the comment section below!

It's easy sometimes to forget what a long legacy of great artists DC Comics has worked with over the years. Thankfully, they shine the spotlight on many of these individuals through the release of graphic novel collections featuring their work. They've recently published volumes concentrating on masterminds such as Alan Moore, Neal Adams, Jack Kirby, and Archie Goodwin.
Alan Moore is best known as the co-creator and writer of Watchmen. However, his artistic reach exceeds far beyond that. DC Universe by Alan Moore shows off the scribe's genius through stories featuring Swamp Thing, Superman, Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and others. It also gives time to lesser-known characters such as the Phantom Stranger, the Vigilante, Voodoo, Deathblow, and the Omega Men to name a few. The art for the different stories is provided by greats like Jim Aparo, Jim Baikie, Brian Bolland, Paris Cullins, George Freeman, Dave Gibbons, Klaus Janson,...

San Diego Comic Con International 2013 kicked off on Wednesday with Preview Night. The events started up at 6pm, though people had been lined up, sometimes necessarily, sometimes inexplicably, all afternoon. For those so inclined, the exhibit floor was delightfully open and upstairs in Ballroom 20, Warner Bros. once again screened a handful of their pilots for shows that will debut this fall.

The premise is familiar to genre fans- in the past several decades, a jump forward in genetics has led to a handful of teens, and a few adults, with superpowers, specifically the three “T”s- telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation. Our lead, Stephen Jameson (Robbie Amell) is a high schooler, looking every day of Amell’s 25 years, who discovers he’s not only one of these Tomorrow People,...

As fans we’ve seen wrestling go to some extreme measures that led to some epic encounters over the years. From Hell in a Cell to Last Man Standing, there have been many stipulations over the years that push the boundaries of brutality and the human anatomy. But there was only one match that went beyond… The War Games.
No matter where it was placed in schedule, the signature two cage spectacular was always the big draw for WCW. Strange alliances would be made and WrestleWars along with fall brawls would be forged in a team battleground of steel and blood . No Pinfalls. No Disqualifications. It’s just Submission or Surrender.

One essential story that should spin out of Man of Steel is the formal introduction of Lex Luthor to this world. Imagine Luthor using Kal-El’s lack of experience against him to show the world that Superman does more harm than good (a classic Luthorism) – especially after the destruction and mayhem Superman “caused” in his battle with General Zod (Michael Shannon). Luthor doesn’t have to be the main villain; he can pull the strings, use technology or simply instigate Superman’s next big conflict in tandem with another villain. In no particular order, here is our list of actors who we think could pull off the Lex Luthor role, along with their pros and cons.
Michael Rosenbaum

The Oval Office with purple lighting? Looks like the Saints have taken the White House, or as they have renamed it, The White Crib. That is where my adventure began as President of the United States. We know what you’re thinking. Science is great. Well you’re wrong! Science is stupid and it spoils everything. Sure it might be the reason we’re so advanced as a species and sure it may be utilised to save hundreds, thousands or possibly millions of lives a day but when it comes down to the crunch science is just a great big ass**le. In fact science is like the kid at school that knows how the magic trick you impressed everyone with really works and he’s not afraid to tell everyone and turn you from hero to zero in no time at all.

Batman Classic: Fright Club Book Review
You can purchase this book on Amazon.com
About the book: The Joker and Harley Quinn have joined forces with the Scarecrow and Jervis Tetch and are terrorizing the citizens of Gotham City. Can Batman and Robin put the Fright Club out of business or will they fall prey to the madness and mayhem as well?
Our Take: Fright Club is a storybook style Batman book that features the dynamic duo vs. Joker, Harley Quinn and the Scarecrow. The story is charming and the artwork by Andy Smith is fun. He meshes various incarnations of the characters..a more modern Robin with a classic blue and gray bats, Batman: Tas Scarecrow and a more Super Powers Joker and of course the iconic Harley Quinn. This one is a great book for a great price for kids or collectors.

The second episode of the new season of Alphas titled, “The Quick and the Dead” airs tonight and we’ve got a great Q&A with Ryan Cartwright who plays Gary Bell, the autistic Alpha team member who can patch into electronics by tapping into their wavelengths. During an Alphas conference call, Cartwright gives us some excellent insight into what to expect this season out of Gary. For those who have never heard Cartwright before, or saw him in the third season of AMC’s Mad Men, do not read these answers in his Gary’s voice, but rather a cheeky British accent.
Everyone loves to see characters’ powers grow and shape into different abilities in these kinds of stories, so I asked Cartwright if there will be an evolution of Gary’s powers, something we haven’t seen before:

Teen Wolf S02E03: "Ice Pick"
Probably the most outrageous lie superhero narratives love to tell is the idea that having super powers is a burden. Oh, poor Spider-Man, now you have to stop all the crime. Oh, poor The Thing, now you have to shop at a Big & Tall store. Oh, poor Rogue, now you have to kiss people through a dental dam. Get over it, you guys! We all have our issues, but we Don't all have super powers. Super powers are great, enjoy them!

George Newbern makes his triumphant return as the voice of the Man of Steel in Superman Vs. The Elite, the latest DC Comics Premiere Movie coming June 12 from Warner Home Video.
Newbern put all the resounding tones of truth, justice and the American way into the commanding vocals behind the animation of Superman in both the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited television series. He last reprised the character’s voice for the DC Showcase original animated short, Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam.
Newbern is a constant on primetime television, appearing on current hit series like NCIS, The Mentalist, Castle and Grey’s Anatomy, to name a but a few. He’s widely recognized for his starring turn opposite Steve Martin in Father of the Bride, and for the NBC series Providence. That’s right, you heard correct, the latest expansion for Saints Row: The Third. For those of you that have played SRtT, will know that it’s really, really over the top. but there was one thing missing. Super Powers. So many times when I was running around the city, probably naked, when I thought I wish I could just jump over that building rather than drive around it. Cars are so passé.

In her heavy tweed dress, Emma looked more suited to promote a winter's tale rather than a summer blockbuster. But that doesn't mean she didn't look amazing in J. Mendel. Emma Stone swung into The Ellen Show to promote her upcoming superhero flick The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, but her dress from J. Mendel Fall 2012 looked more suited for a women's club luncheon. But the not so summery style didn't make Emma look any less lovely. Sporting her natural blonde locks, Emma wore a metallic tweed sleeveless dress with leather trims. The more conservative dress may have aged other Hollywood starlets, but Emma fared well and still looked cute. What do You think of Emma's more winter-friendly dress? Should she spring into summer with a more colorful and lighter look for her next appearance? Ryan Reynolds and his alter-ego in Warner Brothers' latest DC Comics adaptation, Green Lantern, are the stars of the California Milk Processor Board's newest "Got Milk?" ad campaign. The ad, titled "Join the Corps: Green Lantern Lights Up With the Super Powers of Milk," features Reynolds in his superhero costume sporting a classic milk mustache and levitating a glass of milk with his power ring. The text reads, "Where there’s a will, there’s a way," and, "See what milk’s protein can do for your muscles," accompanied by a web address for a Green Lantern-themed site aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of milk. The site not only contains a pretty nifty web-cam game, but Michael Clarke Duncan, who voices the alien Green Lantern Kilowog, provides the narration.

Jor-el Gives Lois Super Powers; Kara Returns — Clark (Tom Welling) takes Lois (Erica Durance) to the Fortress to get Jor-El’s (voiced by Terrance Stamp) blessing for their marriage. Jor-El bestows a unique wedding gift on the couple – he gives Lois Clark’s super powers so she can see what it’s like to be him for a day. Unfortunately, the Toyman (guest star Chris Gautheir) has returned to Metropolis, so Lois must go up against the notorious villain instead of Clark. So I consider myself a feminist. Is that a bad word, feminist? Does it make you think about man-hating? That ain't the case, kids. Feminists are just after equal treatment. That's why, on this site, for every bosomy female, you'll see a shirtless dude. We're equal opportunity objectifiers here at Pajiba. But of course I got my feminist knickers in a twist when I saw the first image of David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman. Want a refresher? Here it is. I mean, it's bad. A lot has been written about how bad it is. How garish, how cheap looking. Some clever photoshoppers over at Bleeding Cool even tried their hand at fixing the costume. Deepening the red, toning down the makeup, removing the heels, etc. To which I say, fine. Better, sure. Still bad.

This month we took sixty-four popular webcomics and put them head to head in a single-elimination tournament. We’re now in round three– the Sweet 16!
Erfworld continues its dominance in the brackets, with Kawaii Not showing surprising strength. Theater Hopper is surprisingly quiet, but they’ve gotten late traction before.
And at this point, nobody has an insurmountable lead– anybody can make a call out to their followers and retake the lead, and after two days of hand-to-hand electioneering at C2E2, the scores can really change. Every match is still too close to call.
So get your votes in– and see who becomes the Elite 8!

The original Prototype features just about everything we could want in a video game. Zombies. Super powers. The ability to drop an elbow on a tank after leaping off of a skyscraper. Yep. That's the good stuff. With Prototype 2 on tap for next year, Activision has blessed us with a truly graceful new trailer. Dig it!
From the Press Release:
Activision Publishing, Inc. has confirmed that Prototype® 2, the sequel to Radical Entertainment's original best-selling game of 2009 - Prototype - is currently in development for 2012. "When Prototype surpassed 2Mm units, we knew gamers would want a sequel to find out what happens next with Alex Mercer," said Ken Rosman, Studio Head, Radical Entertainment. The Biggest Loser finale is so close we can practically taste the confetti. Are we starting to make bets on who will win the big prize? My money is on Patrick, even though I'd really like to see Ada win. Well, the Final Four have been working out like super-humans for the last however many months so I thought I would give them superhero alter-egos to help solidify their place in the finale, but mostly because it's fun.

Hey all! It’s been a while since I posted something on spoilertv, so I thought that I would try my hand at yet another recap. I just watched the pilot episode of No Ordinary Family, which shall henceforth be known as Nof, and I was impressed by how much fun I had!
This television season, I was most excited about watching The Event. Sure, I love the complicated time jumping story and am intrigued by the constant maddening Wtf Is Happening; however, it requires a fair amount of intellectual investment. Nof came out of left field and completely drew me in with its simplicity and cheesy metaphors.
I heard about Nof like most people did. When a new show is launched, a lot of the hype tends to involve namedropping already popular programs in an attempt to label it as some sort of pleasant mishmash. This show was no...

Product Spotlight: Batman Fabric Posters
We feature a lot of merchandise here on Legions of Gotham. Honestly, sometimes it starts to all blend together. We don't get a ton of new stuff until a movie is released or a new cartoon premieres. I came across these in Krypton Comics, our local comic shop in town, and I had to check 'em out! We partnered with Lpgi to give the fans a heads-up on their cool new product, Batman Fabric Posters.
At first, I thought they were flags..but the term fabric posters definately is a better description. What I love about these is the retro Super Powers era graphics that they have used. You get anything from a blue and gray Batman to the standard Bat-Symbol with a black backround. I've hung these up with the ol' collection and they look fantastic. I like the more than standard posters, because...

Kudos to the king of nerd collector sites, Mattycollector.com for bringing us up to speed on the newest line of figures to hit shelves as part of the DC Universe line of toys this summer. Continuing to bring DC fans a plethora of their favorite golden, silver, and modern age heroes and villains, Mattel is bringing a wave of 7 figures (with a few chases which we'll describe in a bit) for you to put down your hard earned cash for. Collecting them all this time will nab you the mighty Legion of Super Heroes villain Validus, complete with see-thru-brain head!
Wave 15 (yes, 15!) of the figures include:
Starman - Your choice of either the golden age Ted Knight version or his son Jack in his modern garb. Each Starman comes with their respective Cosmic Staff; Ted also comes with his Stellar Energy Pistol. No clue yet which is considered the chase.

This isn't really news, so much as it's an examination of the continuously remarkable levels of stupidity that people will go to when it comes to art, specifically movies in this case, that they deem offensive. It's no surprise that over the years, numerous groups, political, religious or otherwise, have raised a fuss over song lyrics, performance styles, films and television shows. The woefully misguided Pmrc of the '80s made artists like 2 Live Crew, Slayer, and Public Enemy their targets, complaining of profanity and inappropriate themes. Of course, all this really did was help their record sales, and make kids who may never have heard of them even more interested.
Then it was sex in films. We all know that one of the great ironies in cinema is that you can show pretty impressive levels of violence before you get an R rating, while an Nc-17 rating for an...

Summit did not pay me off, nor was I encouraged by anyone on their staff to love The Hurt Locker. The fact is, I admire the work Kathryn Bigelow and company did on the film and am happy Bigelow’s talents have finally been fully realized. She has this uncanny ability to take scripts and get the absolute best from them, and has a complete understanding of the medium the bulk of her peers lack. Ms. Bigelow did not win because she’s a woman, no. She won that award because she absolutely out-directed everyone in the category. Coupled with a big Pittsburgh Penguins victory yesterday, it was almost a perfect day.
Almost, because my father’s team was unsuccessful in winning their regional tournament (Nationals guys, keep it focused,) and the two best screenplays of last year were outright robbed. Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner, and Quentin Tarantino all have...

Chicago – I’m one of many fans burned by the fizzling out of “Heroes,” a show that started incredibly strong and went from “must-see” to “meh” in just a few seasons. Despite the show’s overall dip in quality, the Blu-Ray releases have been heralded as leaders in the format, filled with special features designed to please hardcore fans. But special features are only one part of a Blu-Ray set and “Heroes: Season Three” falls short in all others.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 The Universal-produced set includes all 25 episodes from the season three volumes of “Heroes,” “Villains” and “Fugitives”. After the disappointing second season of “Heroes,” fans were excited to see how the once-clever show could return to form with a reportedly reinvigorated writing crew who publicly acknowledged the failures of season two. To this viewer, season three is just more of the same with cluttered storytelling, characters that we stopped caring about years ago,...

So, you want to be a superhero? Not a problem. Oh... you're not a billionaire orphan with years to dedicate to the martial arts? Don't fret! I'm sure you can play in a lake of toxic ooze, or get bit by a genetically unstable super-wombat, right? Well... even if you don't have powers, don't feel bad. Cause there are some folks out there in comic-book-land that would have been better off as bartenders or stock-boys than crime-fighters or super-heroes. Don't believe me? Well kind citizen, scope this list of lameoids out, and see sometimes it's no so bad being normal after all*.

This is kind of an old short, but it's one I stumbled across the other day for the first time and absolutely loved. Super Powers, directed by John Mitchell and Jeremy Kipp Walker, tells of a young married couple who turn to dressing up as super heroes (specifically Batman and Wonder Woman) to spice up life in the bedroom. However, when a situation forces them out of their apartment and onto the streets, these two may just wind up saving a lot more than their sex life. Super Powers won Best Narrative Short Film at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, and trust me when I say watching this short will totally make your Monday. Check it out below and let us know what you think ...
