According to Deadline, Netflix has picked up the adaptation rights to Hello America, J.G. Ballard’s 1981 sci-fi novel about a group of explorers rediscovering the ruins of the United States a century after the country collapsed and most of the citizens evacuated to Europe and Asia. Along the way, they face the sort of dangers you’d expect to find in a post-apocalyptic version of America, including a “charismatic leader” calling himself President Charles Mason who controls an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Basically, Netflix could just make the movie version into a documentary if it waits long enough.
The Hello America movie is being produced by Ridley Scott and his Scott Free production company, making this his second Netflix deal after the Tom Hardy-starring War Party. A director and cast for Hello America have not been announced yet.

Although there may be a competition going on between Amazon and Netflix for subscribers, the truth is that both company’s streaming services are essential for anyone who watches a lot of movies and TV and who wants to be part of the pop culture conversations as they happen.
There’s no denying that Amazon Prime is worth the $99/year, which not only gives you access to many movies but also a good amount of music streaming and digital media access, plus faster shipping for when you actually want some sort of physical product (you can also just get video content for $8.99/month, which oddly means paying more for less).
And Netflix is still a must-have for both its exclusive and nonexclusive content, though depending on one’s usage could be best for sporadic membership rather than continued subscription — now at $120/year...

There is every single possible thing in the world to like about this article headline. Ridley Scott is 100% back in the game right now because of Alien: Covenant (though I think it’s a little premature of him to claim he can direct six more). Tom Hardy is well, Tom Hardy. The thought of him playing a Navy Seal couldn’t possibly be more right. Then take into account Netflix who is essentially taking over the entire world of movie, TV, and everything else winning the bid for the film, and you’ve got yourself something that can be hyped for at

Netflix plans to explore delivering mobile-specific cuts of its original titles. Earlier in the week, the company’s chief product officer Neil Hunt said during a press briefing that the streaming giant is looking into this possibility as a way to better accommodate the growing number of people watching films and TV shows on their smart phones and iPads.

With so much hype surrounding shows’ Christmas and Halloween specials, it’s easy to forget that there have been some great St. Patrick’s Day episodes in the TV world. So here are a lucky seven episodes that’ll get you excited to celebrate the holiday! Or make you want to stay at home and chill, since all are available to stream on Netflix.
“30 Rock”
Like a double rainbow, “30 Rock” gave its fans not one, but two reasons to get excited, as it aired two St. Patrick’s Day episodes in 2009 and 2012. However, the 2009 episode, “The Funcooker,” is the standout. Written by Tom Ceraulo and Donald Glover, the episode sees Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) attend jury duty, in which the woman on trial hilariously reflects Liz’s own work problems. She must also juggle problems that arise when her show’s stars (Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski) pass out and curse while hosting the St.

As Carrie Bradshaw would say, some of today's movie news got us thinking. The news offered more perplexion than usual. We'll present you with the questions and maybe you can help with the answers. Or just join in the bewilderment:
How many franchises can one actor be in?
You’d think being Superman would be enough. But no Henry cavill is joining Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 6. No details about who he’s playing. Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Jeremy Renner are expected to be back for the new adventure.
Who is starring in Jennifer Kent’s follow up to The Babadook? We know who Sam Claflin is, as we’ve seen him in a few films including The Hunger Games. But he’s not the lead, the new film titled The Nightingale is set in Tasmania in the 1820s, and follows a young Irish female convict whose...

Tom Hardy will get to tell more of his maritime saga in season two of Taboo, but he’s still casting about for other high seas adventures. Hardy’s landed a new project that’s more contemporary in its setting, but should still allow him to bellow at the people around him. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hardy’s bringing his War Party to Netflix. The new drama is about—you guessed it—war. Specifically, War Party will follow the lives of real-life Navy Seals, one of whom will presumably be played by Hardy (we can’t picture him being one of the government officials helping to plan an attack, but we could be wrong).
Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Films, which already produces Taboo, has also been tapped to produce Hardy’s latest project. The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford’s Andrew Dominik will direct...

Netflix is making some Big moves into the world of original films. Earlier today, they snapped up a very exciting project coming to us from Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy and Andrew Dominik called War Party, and now they’re teaming up with director Justin Lin to bring us The Stand Off, a period drama written by Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman.
Deadline reports that the pic will take place in December of 1969, when “a newly formed Police unit known as the “Swat team” embarked on their first major operation: to raid the Los Angeles Headquarters of the Black Panther Party. Seen from both perspectives, the resulting face off would be the most intense in the city’s long history, and its ramifications are still felt today.” It sounds like a fascinating premise for what’s sure to be a dark and gritty film, one that will no doubt be brought...

Netflix continues to make big deals with big talent to make original movies for them and their subscribers. They just picked up a film pitch for a movie called War Party that will star Tom Hardy. They made a seven-figure deal for the project, and it doesn't hurt that they have Ridley Scott on board to produce it.
The film is being co-written by Andrew Dominik, who is also set to direct the film. If you aren't familiar with that name, he directed Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. If you haven't seen that movie yet, you really need to because it's a stunning film.
There isn't much know about the story for the film, but we know that it based on a true story that follows a team of real-life Navy Seals and that life rights were a part of the deal.

So Tom Hardy is attached to a packaged deal for a pitch called War Party about an elite Navy Seal, with Andrew Dominik (The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford) writing and directing, and Ridley Scott producing through his Scott Free Studios. Well, that didn’t take long. No sooner had Deadline reported that War Party, a hot package with Tom Hardy, Andrew Dominik and Ridley Scott attached to star, direct and produce in that order, was pitched to buyers and we now have confirmation that Netflix has acquired the starry project for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.
The acquisition brings an end to an admittedly short, but no less heated bidding war between the online streamer and a handful of rivalling studios – namely Amazon, Universal, and Lionsgate – and The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) will pen the Navy Seal thriller alongside up-and-coming writer Harrison Query. Ridley Scott, meanwhile, is attached in a producing capacity, and his involvement heralds a reunion between the filmmaker’s Scott Free Films and Tom Hardy following hit period drama, Taboo.

If there’s one thing we could use more of, it’s films by Andrew Dominik. The director took seven years between “Chopper” and “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford,” another five until the underrated “Killing Them Softly,” and four more until last year’s gorgeous and shattering documentary, “One More Time With Feeling.” However, it looks like that trend of shorter gaps between movies could be continuing.

Courtesy of backing from Netflix, it was thought Andrew Dominik‘s next film would be his long-in-the-works Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde. However, with the struggle to find a leading actress, the film looks to be put on hold in favor of a new drama, once again in a Netflix deal (which, every new day, seems to be a recurring phrase around these parts).
The project is War Party, a Ridley Scott-produced adventure film that will find Tom Hardy starring as a real-life Navy Seal. Although not a great deal more is known about the next film by The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director, he co-write the script with Harrison Query, who has written the yet-to-be-produced Honor for Sale that John Hillcoat is attached to direct.

So Picks from the Rack was huge this week. There was so much worth reading and I have to tell you about it. So come with me as I tell you about some comic books. Han Solo #1 proves I will buy any Star Wars comic so long as it says Star Wars on it. The new team of rookie ring slingers in Green Lanterns #1 has me intrigued. Oh Titans Rebith #1 how I’ve so missed this team, who the hell is that green Raven? Green Arrow #1 shows me that Ollie does vigilante better than Batman. Batman #1 reminds me that Batman just annoys me sometimes. Star Wars #20 is another tale from the hermit stage of Obi Wan’s career. X-Men Civil War #1 is disappointing as it doesn’t seem like the X-Men were invited to the Civil War party. And Civil War II #2 once again had me going Whoa!! at the end. Check it all out and tell me what you’re reading.

Your mission: Outrun the War Party! The 8-bit Cinema guys have decided to take on Mad Max: Fury Road next, turning one of this year's best movies into an Nes-style video game. Or maybe Snes, because it goes up to 16-bit at times. But it's still awesome. We've featured many of these 8-bit cinema videos in the past, and they're just so much fun to watch, because it makes me really wish I still had my old Nes still and this game was real. I would be playing it right now. The Doof Warrior gets his ass kicked pretty quickly with one bop on the head, but other than that, this is a full-on video game version of the plot in the movie. Enjoy! Thanks to SlashFilm for the tip on this. The video comes directly from the CineFix YouTube, the channel behind these 8-bit cinema creations. Nice work as always.

Considering today is Friday the 13th, I couldn't imagine a more fitting date to serve up a review of Gwar's thirteenth studio album... which also happens to sport thirteen tracks. Battle Maximus marks a major turning point for the Scumdogs of the Universe in nearly three decades of debauchery on Planet Earth: as you probably know, it's the first Gwar album recorded after the passing of lead guitarist Cory Smoot, alias Flattus Maximus, who served as one of the band's core members for years (in fact, he first joined them thirteen years ago... again, that magic number) and a fan favorite. While his supreme talent cannot be replaced, his musical duties have been ably assumed by another skilled axe-man, Brent Purgason of Cannabis Corpse. Brent has also officially been assimilated into the vast Gwar canon, taking on the stage role of Pustulus Maximus (a relative of Flattus, of course...

Prequels are a risky venture when they are part of an established series, especially if they feature core characters from said series. With so many trilogies reaching their final chapter lately, prequels have been popping up everywhere, either in announcements or store shelves.
The latest beloved series to receive this treatment is Gears of War, which fans may remember ended on a pretty high note a few years ago. With a series still ripe for the miking and plenty of potential for reworking the formula, Gears of War: Judgment is in the precarious position of reigniting a series known for its lack of diversity. Can this prequel teach the old dog enough new tricks to stay relevant, though?
While there’s no simple one word answer to that question, it is easy to say that Gears of War: Judgment does what the series does best, but with a few new...
