New additions include ‘Ten Minutes To Midnight’.
UK-based genre specialist Jinga Films has added five titles to its slate ahead of next week’s virtual Cannes week (June 22-26).
They include Erik Bloomquist’s black comedy horror Ten Minutes To Midnight, a Us title about a punk rock DJ who is bitten by a vampire bat on the night of her final broadcast. Caroline Williams leads the cast alongside Nicole Kang, Nicholas Tucci, and Alice Kremelberg.
Bloomquist wrote the film with his brother Carson, with the pair producing with Adam Weppler for Mainframe Pictures.

Commemorating Rod Taylor, we turn to Dark of the Sun, routinely dismissed as a nasty slice of thick-ear but admired by Scorsese for its unflinching brutality and lean, efficient technique: possibly the best film directed by great cinematographer Jack Cardiff, who otherwise could be said to have squandered years on dreck like Girl on a Motorcycle (lovely to look at, inane and obnoxious) and The Mutations (ugly to look at, inaner and obnoxiouser). It's always a bit of a crime when a great specialist becomes an undistinguished all-rounder, and Cardiff's belated return to cinematography was, on the whole, a happy day. His admired first film in the director's chair, Sons and Lovers, looks magnificent, but screenwriter Gavin Lambert felt Cardiff didn't really understand the material.
Well, in a sense the strength of Dark of the Sun, superficially an action/adventure yarn set in the Congo during revolution, is its simplicity:...

In the next part of his series, Alex talks us through the film careers of the second and fourth Doctors, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker...
Read Alex's retrospective on the film careers of William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee, here.
Like their fellow Time Lord actors, William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker also shared certain genres of film. Both appeared, before and after their time as the Doctor, in horror movies and both worked on Ray Harryhausen Sinbad films.
Patrick George Troughton was born in Mill Hill, London on March 25th 1920. He made his film debut aged 28 in the 1948 B-Movie The Escape. Troughton's was a very minor role. Among the better known cast was William Hartnell, though even Hartnell's role was small and the two didn't share any scenes together. From the late Forties, Troughton found more success on the small screen,...

"Exploring identity through cinema" is about as broad a remit as you can get away with, but any event featuring Brian Blessed, Mike Hodges and Paddy Considine is always welcome. They'll be talking about their careers and looking back on old favourites. There are new films, including a Kent fruit-picking mystery (Strawberry Fields) and a Korean supernatural thriller (Haunters). But the main draw is an eclectic mix of films such as Oss 117: Cairo Nest Of Spies, Rupert Everett zombie movie Dellamorte Dellamore and Bogart noir classic In A Lonely Place.

Complementing the Barbican's current exhibition on the German design movement (to 12 Aug), this season brings together Bauhaus-related documentaries and rare abstract, animated and projected experiments by Bauhaus students,...

Following the initially fascinating but ultimate tedium of black-magic mumbo-jumbo Shaw Brothers oddity The Boxer’s Omen (1983) as the highly anticipated ‘Mystery Film’ choice from Fantastic Fest, Sunday evening’s Drive-In Delirium Presents… double bill mash-up was something to get seriously geeked out about.
Ozploitation extraordinarie Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood) and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s ‘Weird Wednesday’ programmer Lars Niels presented their film clip compendiums; the first of which, Trailorpalooza, compiled a collection of cult film trailers plucked from the last 50 years and featured some of the most ludicrously over-the-top scenarios ever conceived. What was most surprising however was the calibre of former Hollywood heavy-weights who actually agreed to sign up to such straight-to-the-trash can concepts.

Last night Stake Land opened Film Society of Lincoln Center’s fourth annual “Scary Movies” festival. The festival is rather unique as it blends some of the familiar classics, such as Hellraiser, Carrie, Dead of Night, with some rarities like Jack Cardiff’s The Mutations and Legend of Hell House to new flavors such as Australia's The Loved Ones, Triangle and last night’s opener, the Tiff Midnight Madness Audience Award winner, Stake Land. The Walter Reade Theater was packed – due to the films’ pedigree coming from almost entirely New York city production companies. The face in the room who everyone knew was budding cult celebrity and horror film superstar Larry Fessenden. He and his partner Peter Phok produced the film for Glass Eye Pix, and obviously Fessenden had his signature cameo. Additionally, those guys who lay claim to four of the first five Red Cameras in existence, Offhollywood, also producers on the film,...

The Tom Baker era arrives with a visually-stunning entry for Doctor Who...
When it was announced that Matt Smith was stepping into David Tennant’s shoes as the Doctor, all I remember saying is “Huh?” With dozens of potential big names being thrown into the ring, I wondered who on Earth this new guy with the bizarre haircut was. Guilty as charged – in the end, I didn’t have to worry, since Smith has proved to be a great success in the role. But I wonder how many viewers in 1974 uttered a collective “Huh?” as Jon Pertwee’s features blurred into those of a relative unknown.
Step forward, Tom Baker. At the time, Baker wasn’t big news. He’d played the mad monk Rasputin with great gusto in the film adaptation of Nicholas And Alexandra. He’d also been in a few ropey horror films such as The Vault Of Horror and The Mutations.
