As awards season is gearing up, Variety looks at emerging designers that will make their mark on the many red carpets ahead:
Bode
For the guys, Emily Bode’s eponymous line of one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted clothing cut from antique fabrics and Victorian quilts has earned a following that includes Donald Glover, Dyllón Burnside, Ezra Miller, Leon Bridges, Jordan Peele and Henry Golding. “I particularly love how each piece has a sense of nostalgia and uniqueness, sure to stand out from the standard suit and tie,” says Ian Bradley, who dressed Lamar Johnson in a Bode jacket and shirt for a Toronto fest event last year after learning about the Atlanta-born designer through friends. “Once I saw one of her signature quilted/patchwork jackets, I was fully invested.” Bradley also works with Indya Moore and Sky Ferreira. Fresh off of her role in the new season of True Detective, Carmen Ejogo has another mystery to solve, but this time it's in Netflix's upcoming horror film, Rattlesnake.
The Zak Hilditch-directed film, due out on Oct. 25, looks incredibly tense and sees Ejogo playing Katrina, a single mother driving cross country with her young daughter, Clara (Apollonia Pratt), in tow. Everything goes to hell when their car breaks down in the middle of a desert, and Clara wanders off into the brush while her mother changes a tire. The next thing she knows, Katrina hears her daughter screaming and soon discovers she's been bitten by a venomous rattlesnake.
In order to save her daughter, Katrina ends up going to extreme lengths when she accepts the help of a mysterious woman in the area who instantly heals the fatal bite. But the good deed comes at a steep price...

"What was done to your daughter, doesn't come cheap..." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a psychological horror-thriller called Rattlesnake, a very plain title for this film since it's about a rattlesnake (bite). Talented actress Carmen Ejogo, who we last saw in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, stars in this Netflix film. When a single mother accepts the help of a mysterious woman after her daughter is bitten by a rattlesnake, she finds herself forced to make an unthinkable deal to repay her debt. Described as a "pulse-pounding, psychological horror" also starring Theo Rossi and Emma Greenwell. This seems to be borrowing from (and then twisting) the Monkey's Paw concept, except it's only one thing that the mother must do in exchange for her daughter's life being spared. Might be good? Especially with Ejogo in the lead. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Zak Hilditch's Rattlesnake,...

Carmen Ejogo headlines Netflix horror movie Rattlesnake, playing a mother who makes a dubious deal to save her snake-bit daughter.
Rattlesnake is one entry amongst a sizable slate of fall season horror offerings over at Netflix.
A psychological horror tale brandishing a tinge of supernatural themes, Rattlesnake – a title that’s simultaneously literal and metaphorical – is mainly a performance showcase for star Carmen Ejogo, who plays a single mother who unwittingly makes a Faustian bargain of sorts with a mysterious woman who wields the power to save her daughter, who was bit by a rattlesnake in a remote, cell-signal-deprived desert location. However, as expected, said bargain comes with a colossal cost, one for which a diverse array of seemingly-demonic individuals are coming to collect.
Zak Hilditch wrote and directed Rattlesnake, directly following up his 2017 Netflix Stephen King adaptation horror film, 1922.

If you’ve watched an episode of Starz’s supernatural drama The Rook, you already know that Emma Greenwell‘s character’s name — Myfanwy — rhymes with “Tiffany.” But you might not know exactly why, and Greenwell was happy to explain when she stopped by TVLine’s San Diego Comic-Con 2019 interview suite.
We won’t go into the specifics here (click on the video above to get a full understanding of why the character foregoes the traditional pronunciation) but we will prepare you: Greenwell’s explanation kicked off a bit of silliness among co-stars Olivia Munn and Joely Richardson. Accents were bandied about.

Exclusive: The Rook is bringing its intrigue to Comic-Con.
The superpowered fueled spy thriller that debuted June 30 on Starz is set for a panel July 19 in Room 6A of the San Diego Convention Center, I’ve learned. As you would hope for an inaugural appearance at the confab, The Rook’s stars Olivia Munn, Joely Richardson and Emma Greenwell will all be in attendance.
No word on who will be moderating the spyfest, but I do know it will take place starting at 6 Pm for those planning their Sdcc schedule.
Based on the often dark-humored 2012 novel by Daniel O’Malley, the series executive produced by Kari Skogland and Stephenie Meyer with showrunners Karyn Usher and Lisa Zwerling traces the steps and global-protecting lower-grade spycraft of Greenwell’s Myfanwy Thomas as she tries to reconstruct her memories after waking up in a very unusual situation underneath London’s Millennium Bridge.

So while the Nielsen ratings don't play into cancellation and renewal decisions in the same way, they do give us a rough idea of which TV series attract and retain viewers. This summer, The Rook TV show makes its debut on Starz. Will the first season provide the kind of programming viewers want? Will The Rook be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.

Myfanwy Thomas wakes up at Millenium Bridge in London surrounded by dead bodies.
She doesn't know how she got there, or what happened to the bodies. That's the hook for new Starz drama The Rook, which premieres tonight at 10/9c.
To say the series is a disappointment would be the understatement of the century. It leaves behind many parts of what made the novel it's based on a success.
It would have probably worked better if it was more faithful to the novel.
Emma Greenwell (Shameless) takes on the lead role and does her best as her character pivots her way through the dumbest of scenarios.

There are mystical powers afoot in the premiere of Starz’s The Rook, but as the series’ protagonist Myfanwy quickly learns, you’ve gotta pay pretty close attention to get a sense of exactly what’s going on.
On the surface, Starz’s adaptation of Daniel O’Malley’s 2012 novel looks like a sleek, tense spy thriller. Agents representing a deep subset of a British governmental agency go on clandestine missions, following orders issued from a headquarters that gleams like an Apple Store. Starz released its trailer for original series “The Rook” on Tuesday, which stars a very confused — and very much in danger — Emma Greenwell.
“The Rook” is a supernatural spy thriller, which tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Greenwell), a woman who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her. When Myfanwy discovers she is a high-ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities, she will have to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory — and why she is a target.
Watch the trailer above. In it, Greenwell wonders aloud, “What kind of monster am I?”

To hear “The Rook” tell it. the reasons why Stephenie Meyer walked away from her own Starz show is much simpler than how Olivia Munn stays healthy.
Speaking at a TCA panel Tuesday afternoon, “The Rook” executive producer Stephen Garrett said Meyer — who was hired as showrunner, before exiting early in production — parted with the show “amicably.” He said Meyer, who adapted Daniel O’Malley’s 2012 novel, had a “different take” than what the other producers decided to pursue. This led to, as you might imagine, a departure over “creative differences.”
“It really wasn’t a hideous process,” Garrett said. Current showrunners are Liza Zwerling (“FlashForward”) and Karyn Usher (“Prison Break”).

Exclusive: There is change at the helm of Starz’s upcoming spy thriller series The Rook, from Lionsgate and Liberty Global. Lisa Zwerling (Betrayal) and Karyn Usher (Bones) have come onboard as showrunners. They will replace in the role The Night Manager‘s Stephen Garrett who remains an executive producer. Meanwhile, Twilight‘s Stephenie Meyer who, via her production company originally brought The Rook to Lionsgate, is stepping away due to differences in creative visions of the project.
The behind-the-scenes change comes early in the production of The Rook, which is currently filming the first two episodes of its first-season order in London. The showrunner switch will have no impact on production, which will continue as scheduled. The Rook is slated to air on Starz in the U.S., and across Liberty Global’s international platforms in 2019.
Zwerling and Usher will executive produce via their Carpool Entertainment production company alongside Garrett under his Character 7 banner.
