The showrunner is leaving, but the show must go on.
Staffers at CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” aren’t sure who the next top producer will be at the program, according to three people familiar with the matter, with top producers ready to take their time to examine the needs of the show after the departure of Chris Licht, who has been executive producer of the late-night mainstay since 2016. Licht’s decision to take a new role as the CEO of CNN once Discovery closes its acquisition of WarnerMedia leaked this weekend, well before the executive was able to formally inform George Cheeks, CEO of Paramount Global’s CBS operations, or Shari Redstone, chairman of the company, according to one of these people.

The Friday night appearance of President Joe Biden on Jimmy Fallon’s couch goosed the last night show’s ratings in several areas.
It was the 79-year-old Biden’s first appearance as president on the show, although he did appear previously when he was the outgoing vice president. The interview was non-confrontational, and Biden mostly avoided getting tongue-tied. The segments were pre-taped.
Overall, the show drew 1.9 million viewers, the show’s highest total since February 5. In the coveted 18-49 demos, the show had an 0.28 rating, its best since Oct. 1.
From Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group and Broadway Video, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and produced by Jamie Granet-Bederman, Nedaa Sweiss and Gerard Bradford. Granet-Bederman and Sweiss are co-showrunners.

Jamie Granet-Bederman, a longtime producer of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” who has worked with the host for more than a decade, will take over showrunner duties for the venerable NBC late-night program, the latest change to the series’ top echelon of executives.
Gavin Purcell, who has been leading the program on an interim basis since late last year, will return to working on a development deal that he has at Universal Television.
In picking Granet-Bederman, Fallon and “Tonight” are choosing to stay with a show insider, after meeting with challenges when outside producers have come in to lead efforts. Writers from “The Tonight Show” virtually joined Variety’s Marc Malkin to discuss working from home, ideas that didn’t make it to air and how Tuesday’s hilarious “Tiger King” sketch came to be.
Presented by the Writers Guild Foundation, the panel consisted of “Tonight Show” head writer Rebecca Drysdale along with Gerard Bradford and Jeremy Bronson, who are both writers and producers. Although social distancing guidelines have turned their writer’s room into a “writer’s Zoom,” all three have leaned in to the reality of quarantine to produce some of Fallon’s funniest sketches yet.
Drysdale was named head writer only a month ago, meaning that she has not actually been in the official writer’s room yet. Despite this, Drysdale said she has enjoyed the challenge the quarantine has presented the “Tonight Show” team.

NBC has made it official. Former Today executive producer Jim Bell has been named executive in charge and showrunner for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, effective immediately. As Deadline reported Monday, Bell had been in talks for the position in light of producer Mike Dicenzo’s decision to leave the program after 10 years in late-night. As expected, Tonight Show producers Katie Hockmeyer and Gerard Bradford, both valued members of Fallon’s production team, will stay on.
Bell segues from his most recent position as President, NBC Olympics Production & Programming, a post he has held since January 2017. He spent seven years (2005-12) as Executive Producer of Today while also juggling Olympic duties before rejoining NBC Sports full-time. He presided over the last stretch of Today morning ratings dominance, which included the controversial ouster of co-host Ann Curry, and successfully launched the fourth hour of the morning news program.

One of the three top producers of NBC’s “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” announced Monday he would step down from his role at the show, giving rise to speculation about whether someone else might be named to help lead the program in days ahead.
Mike Dicenzo, a writer and producer who has worked with host Jimmy Fallon for a decade, said via Twitter that he would leave the program, “one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made, and one I’ve been grappling with this year. Ultimately, I just felt it was time,” he said. “And thankfully, Jimmy couldn’t have been more supportive or understanding.” Dicenzo has been a longtime creative aide-de-camp to Fallon, helping devise some of his best-known late-night sketches, including one that aired earlier this year in a post-Super Bowl broadcast that featured Fallon doing a lampoon of Bob Dylan singing lyrics that described America under the Trump administration.

Exclusive: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is undergoing a major behind-the-scenes change. Producer Mike Dicenzo is leaving NBC’s late-night program. He just confirmed his departure on Twitter. I hear former Today executive producer Jim Bell is in talks to come in as new Tonight Show showrunner.
Dicenzo was part of a producing team of three The Tonight Show/Late Night Jimmy Fallon veterans who were elevated to lead the show in 2016 following the departure of producer-showrunner Josh Lieb.
Dicenzo and Gerard Bradford, who penned Slow Jam The News Featuring President Obama among other signature Tonight Show bits, assumed oversight of the show creative, while Hockmeyer assumed oversight of production. All three had been with Fallon since before the 2009 launch of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, transitioning with him to The Tonight Show. I hear that Bradford and Hockmeyer, both valued members of Fallon’s team, are expected to stay on.

Amy Ozols’ late-night work is being seen an hour earlier, thanks to a recent move that took her from a co-executive producer spot at CBS’ “Late Late Show with James Corden” to the head writer position at NBC’s “Tonight Show.”
Ozols became head writer at the NBC late-night mainstay in January, though the network did not announce the hire. Her move to “Tonight” reunites her with host Jimmy Fallon, with whom she worked for many years on a variety of projects, including a substantial stint between 2009 and 2012 as a producer and staff writer during his tenure at NBC’s “Late Night.”

To appreciate how much work goes into writing a show like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” ask a writer how many jokes they must write on any given day for any given segment. The answer is easily dozens, and that doesn’t include comedy pitches for celebrity guests and big sketch ideas like the show’s famed TV show parodies.
Gerard Bradford, a supervising writer for “Tonight Show,” broke down for IndieWire just how intense the production process can be. He also revealed some of his favorite sketches from the past year, and their more unusual inspirations.
What does having a regular schedule for specific desk bits like “Thank You Notes” mean for the rhythm of writing the show?
It definitely helps – especially on a show like ours where we’re doing five hour-long shows a week, and each show can be very different content-wise on any given day.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
