In Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series, Jake Gyllenhaal is Presumed Innocent until proven guilty.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow — which of course previously begat the 1990 Harrison Ford/Greta Scacchi/Bonnie Bedelia film — the eight-episode series covers a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads its official description.

Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.
Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.
What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.
The rest of the cast includes Ruth Negga,...

David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams are teaming up for a limited series adaptation of courtroom thriller Presumed Innocent for Apple.

It marks the first Apple series order for Kelley, who will serve as showrunner on the project and will exec produce alongside Castle Rock showrunner Dustin Thomason, Abrams and Bad Robot’s Head of Television Ben Stephenson.

The book told the story through the eyes of the accused Rusty Sabich, played by Ford in the movie, who was charged with the murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus.

HBO Max has decided to pass on “The Shining” spinoff series “Overlook” from J.J. Abrams, TheWrap has learned.
Warner Bros. Television — whose sister film studio Warner Bros. produced Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining” — and Abrams’ Bad Robot will be shopping the series elsewhere in what is considered a competitive situation among other possible platforms. The project had been in development since April 2020 with a series commitment but was not ordered to series by the WarnerMedia-owned streaming service.
Written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brow, “Overlook” is described as a horror-thriller series “inspired by and featuring iconic characters” from the King novel. The show “explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.”

It’s the time of Peak TV! There’s TV everywhere! You can’t shake a stick without hitting another TV show on another streamer! TV! TV! TV!
All that’s true — until it’s not.
The sheer quantity of TV does not always equate to quality TV winning out, and each year, there are a number of worthy shows that don’t reach whatever mystical threshold television executives have ascertained is required to keep a project in production. This is even more true this year, with the business pressures created by the pandemic often — and some cynics would argue, conveniently — cited as the reason for cancellation.
Here, IndieWire lists, in alphabetical order, the year’s shows that were canceled too soon. They’re gone — but not forgotten, thanks to the afterlife they could receive on those same streaming outlets that didn’t want to fund new episodes. As it turns out,...

It’s official. Castle Rock will not be returning for a third season. Hulu has canceled the psychological horror series starring Lizzy Caplan after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed.
Season 2 of the anthology series premiered more than a year ago. There were no expectations for a third installment, and the decision to end the series after two seasons was made awhile ago. Once one of the first suppliers of Hulu after it branched out into premium original content, Warner Bros TV has focused its attention to supplying recently launched sibling HBO Max. There are no plans for Castle Rock to continue on HBO Max, we hear.

Hulu is not going back to “Castle Rock.” The Stephen King-inspired anthology has been canceled after two seasons.
The series was loosely based on King’s many works, including “Salem’s Lot,” “Misery” and “Shawshank Redemption.” The second season starred Lizzy Caplan as a younger Annie Wilkes, who was memorably portrayed by Kathy Bates in the film adaptation of “Misery.”
King executive produced the series alongside JJ. Abrams and his Bad Robot banner. It was from Warner Bros. TV and Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw served as showrunner. It ended its two-season last December.
The series was set in Castle Rock, Maine, a fictional town that is frequently the setting for King’s novels, including “Cujo,” “The Dead Zone,” and “The Body” (the novella that “Stand By Me” was based on).
The first season featured Shawshank Penitentiary (the setting of “The Shawshank Redemption”) and starred Bill Skarsgaard, Andre Holland, Scott Glenn...

We only just returned to the Overlook Hotel in last year’s Doctor Sleep, but Warner Bros. is already sending us back to that winter vacation resort from hell for a new TV series that’ll act as a spinoff of Stephen King’s The Shining. Castle Rock season 2 ended with plenty of mysteries yet to be solved. This might mean that season 3 is on the way at Hulu.
Castle Rock season 2 has come to an end, leaving many mysteries unsolved, even as we got a resolution for the season's biggest storyline. With Annie Wilkes well on her way to becoming the diabolical nurse we first met in Misery, a potential season 3 will have to shift its focus to new characters to continue the story of the most haunted town in Maine (and maybe America).
There's only one issue: Castle Rock has yet to be officially renewed for a third season by Hulu, leaving the fate of both the show and the town in limbo. But showrunner Dustin Thomason doesn't seem too worried about whether the anthology series will be back for another scare. He recently hinted to Collider that he and his...

Was that the ending you expected? While there was a sense that the show always knew where it ultimately had to go, the journey Annie Wilkes takes throughout the season is nothing short of breathtaking. Lizzy Caplan turns in her best performance to date as the nurse, mother, and daughter who's just trying to survive the "filth" of the world and shield her daughter from it. Shining a light on Annie's undiagnosed mental illness was an absolutely inspired way to explore facets of the character that the source material didn't. It was important for Annie to take back her narrative in 2019, and we should give a round of applause to showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, as...

It was important for Annie to take back her narrative in 2019, and we should give a round of applause to showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, as...

Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 7
Castle Rock delivers another stunning twist in "The Word," an episode that not only connects the dots between past and present but also between seasons. Along the way, we get a surprising Bill Skarsgard return in the final scene of the episode as well as an excellent performance from Mathilde Dehaye (The Pretenders), who is revealed to be the mysterious Amity Lambert, the crux of the plot against Castle Rock and Jerusalem's Lot this season.
"The Word" takes a deep dive into Jerusalem's Lot and Castle Rock's past. We meet the French colonists of New Jerusalem, the misfortunate, starving villagers living on cursed soil that will bear no fruit. That is, until Amity, an exiled young woman accused of being a witch, encounters...

Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 6
Castle Rock season 2 shows no signs of slowing down after last week's season-defining Annie Wilkes origin story. "The Mother" not only delivers a big payoff after last week's big cliffhanger, but also digs deeper into whatever the hell is going on at the Marsten House. (It's sticky business.) The episode is exciting, heartbreaking, and as gruesome as you'd expect, and the climactic confrontation between Annie and Rita goes down as another one of the season's many highlights.
Credit must be given to Sarah Gadon (11.22.63) for her top-notch performance as Rita. While gentle, sympathetic, and kind in "The Laughing Place," here we see her at the end of her rope, a broken woman who has every right to be angry at the teen girl who stole her baby.

Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 5
A year ago, I would have cringed at the thought of an Annie Wilkes origin story. Surely, a character as iconic as Stephen King's psychotic fiction fan needs no prologue in 2019. A ham-handed "Misery: The Beginning" Hollywood movie would almost certainly defile the character worse than when Paul Sheldon decided to kill off his most famous heroine. Yet, here is Castle Rock to prove me completely wrong. "The Laughing Place" is not only an Annie Wilkes origin story but one of those special King-inspired stories we'll be talking about for a long time.
Castle Rock has seriously met its potential in season 2, with stories that not only pay homage to the master of...

Tim Robbins tells us what it's like to play a new Stephen King character as well as another King character he'd love to play.
This Castle Rock article contains spoilers.
It took Tim Robbins 25 years to return to Shawshank Prison, but when he did step back into that particular hell in the seventh episode of Castle Rock season 2, it was as a completely different character. Robbins, best known to Stephen King fans as Andy Dufresne in the movie The Shawshank Redemption, stars on Hulu's Castle Rock anthology series as Reginald "Pop" Merrill, ruthless loan shark and patriarch of the Merrill crime family. He's also a man on death row who is forced to face his dark past once and for all -- the kind of tortured subject King loves to write.
But Robbins' Pop isn't the Pop Merrill we know from the 1990 novella "The Sun Dog,...

Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 4
Is Pop a villain? That's a question I posed to actor Tim Robbins during the Castle Rock season 2 press junket a few weeks back. He played coy and didn't directly answer the question, but one thing is for sure: Pop is a complicated man with a guilty conscience.
With Castle Rock, showrunners Dustin Thomason and Sam Shaw get to rewrite the story of Pop Merrill, a character who first appeared in Stephen King's short story "The Sun Dog." Here, he isn't just a crime boss but a loving dad, a tough uncle, a loan shark, and seemingly a beloved member of the Castle Rock community. He even helps Somali immigrants start their own businesses in Jerusalem's Lot, a town that's generally unhappy with the arrival of these foreigners.

Hulu has already released the first few episodes of J.J. Abrams and Stephen King’s Castle Rock and so far I’m loving it! If you haven’t started watching it yet, what are you waiting for!? We’ve got a new featurette to share with you today for the series which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the new season, and talks about creating an authentic Stephen King experience.
The second season of Castle Rock focuses on Annie Wilkes from King’s classic horrifying story, Misery. The synopsis explains that “a feud between warring clans comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan), Stephen King's nurse from hell, gets waylaid in Castle Rock."
Lizzy Caplan is perfect in the role of Annie and I couldn’t be happier with how the story is playing out. There are some great plot points that I didn’t see coming.

As an anthology series, “Castle Rock” always planned to start a fresh story each season. Given the sheer volume of Stephen King content at co-creator and showrunner Dustin Thomason’s disposal, there’s no real concern of running short on new stories to build from old bones. Season 1 showed how connecting themes, locales, and people through the mysterious Maine town could deliver further thrills, chills, and deeply moving character studies enriched by a brilliant formal structure that mimics a memory-ravaging disease.
But Season 2 differs from Season 1 even more than one might expect. Though Hulu and Bad Robot’s sophomore effort sticks fairly close to the series’ pre-set plans, its central focus isn’t an original creation, but Annie Wilkes. The character made famous by Kathy Bates in “Misery” (and plenty of re-stagings thereafter) is the star again, embodied here by Lizzy Caplan. Unlike Henry Deaver, the Season 1 lead played by Andre Holland,...
