Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.
In most current linear Nielsen viewership (2/12 to date), CSI: Vegas, which improved its time period, is at #21 among all non-sports broadcast programs with 6.234M viewers and So Help Me Todd at #22 with 6.224M. That is more...

Hey, "So Help Me Todd" fans. We hope you guys totally dug and savored every minute of episode 21 tonight, because it was definitely the final episode of So Help Me Todd's current, premiere season 1, and with this writers strike going on, we have no idea when you guys will see the debut of the new season 2. However, that is the good news we have to share with you. CBS did officially renew So Help Me Todd for a brand new season 2, and they did it quite early too. According to the folks over at Deadline.com, CBS renewed So Help Me Todd way back in February 2023. So, they were very pleased with the way it was performing. Deadline.com is also reporting that the showrunners for So Help Me Todd Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro are quitting. Apparently, they had only signed up to work on the first season.

CBS has renewed freshman drama “So Help Me Todd” for another season.
The series follows meticulous attorney Margaret Wright (Marcia Gay Harden) and Todd (Skylar Astin), her talented but scruffy, aimless son whom she hires as her law firm’s in-house investigator. As the black sheep of the well-heeled Wright family, Todd is a laidback, quick-thinking, excellent former private detective who fell on hard times after his flexible interpretation of the law got his license revoked. Margaret’s penchant for excellence and strict adherence to the law is at complete odds with Todd’s scrappy methods of finding his way through sticky situations. Madeline Wise, Tristen J. Winger, Inga Schlingmann and Rosa Arredondo also star.
“So Help Me Todd” is created by Scott Prendergast, who executive produces alongside Elizabeth Klaviter, Dr. Phil McGraw, Stuart Gillard, Jay McGraw and Julia Eisenman. CBS Studios produces.

So Help Me Todd will be back for a second season. Amid strong ratings, CBS announced today it has renewed the hit drama series starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin for premiere in the 2023-24 broadcast season.
The early renewal continues So Help Me Todd’s Cinderella story. Taking a big blow early in its pilot stage when the female lead was recast, with Harden replacing Geena Davis opposite Astin, the project hung in there in the middle of the pack before making a big pilot season finish with strong testing results, landing a series order.
There was also a showrunner change, with Elizabeth Klaviter replacing Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, who had signed on as EP/showrunners for the pilot only. But, just like NBC’s This Is Us whose trailer exploded after the upfronts, So Help Me Todd quietly gained momentum last summer, placing on lists of...

“CBS is off to a tremendous start this season, said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “We are thrilled to have the three most watched new series, each with their own unique settings, characters and storylines. These dramas are elevating our already successful lineup, resonating with diverse audiences both on-air and on streaming, and continuing to grow each week.”
“We thank the talented casts, executive producers and their incredible writing and production teams for bringing these shows to life,” Kahl added. “Additional kudos to our CBS programming teams for shepherding these series to success. We are delighted to give them well deserved full season orders.”
According to Nielsen’s Live+7 data as of Oct. 16, “Fire Country” is averaging 8.3 million viewers per episode, while “East New York” is at 7.4 million per episode.

CBS is wasting little time in locking down its trio of first-year scripted shows.
The network has extended the orders for East New York, Fire Country and So Help Me Todd after promising starts for all three. CBS is calling the extensions “full season orders,” though it hasn’t set episode counts for the trio. In the era of shorter season orders, a full run can mean anything from 15 or 16 episodes to the once-standard 22.
The pickups for the three shows come as little surprise, as Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd are the three most watched rookie network shows of the 2022-23 season so far. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Fire Country drew 8.26 million viewers over seven days for its series debut. East New York is averaging 7.37 million over its first two episodes — and is the top-rated new series (and No.

“Clarice” may take place in 1993, but its issues surrounding race and gender in the workplace feel right out of 2021. According to the people in front of and behind the camera, that was a huge part of the reason for doing the show.
“For me, the thing that was exciting about telling a story in 1993, while being in 2021, was the prism that we get to look at our world from. It feels like a really safe way to investigate issues that are topical today: What it means to be a woman in the workplace. In a television landscape riddled with reboots, sequels and revivals, audiences are primed for stories that pick up where another tale has left off. Figuring out how to continue the narrative of a longtime franchise or beloved character isn’t always easy, but when done well, can translate to loyal fans — and even Emmy attention, as in the case of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel, “Better Call Saul.” This season, several TV series are keeping well-known lore alive, but evolving their stories in new and sometimes unexpected ways.
Among the shows that are continuing journeys of known characters are everything from “Power Book II: Ghost” at Starz, to NBC’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” the latter of which has revived beloved detective Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni. Other series pick up characters or universes in slightly less conventional ways.

“Seal Team” and “Clarice” could soon be on the move. Variety has learned from sources that there are plans taking shape to move the series off of CBS to the ViacomCBS streaming service Paramount Plus.
According to sources, the current plan would be to air a few episodes of the fifth season of “Seal Team” on CBS before moving it over to the streamer, though deals for this are still being worked out. The move would also likely mean a reduced episode count for the series, which ran for 22 episodes its first two seasons, then 20 in Season 3, and 16 in Season 4, with the Season 4 set to wrap up on May 26. “Clarice,” meanwhile would move to Paramount Plus for the entirety of its second season.

In what could be a glimpse of the future of a symbiotic relationship between broadcast networks and their streaming siblings, I hear two high-profile CBS drama series on the bubble, Seal Team, and Clarice, will be moving to Paramount+ next season.
The deals are still being finalized but I hear the David Boreanaz-starring military drama, which is wrapping its fourth season, will kick off its fifth season on CBS next fall and air its first several episodes — likely four — on the broadcast network before migrating to Paramount+. Freshman Clarice‘s second season will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Reps for the streamer and CBS Studios, which produces both series, declined comment.

Freshman Clarice‘s second season will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Reps for the streamer and CBS Studios, which produces both series, declined comment.

In 1991 The Silence of the Lambs became a phenomenon; cleaning up at the box office, winning all five major Academy Awards and turning both of its lead characters into overnight icons. But while antagonist Hannibal Lecter has scarcely been away from our screens, the steely yet vulnerable hero of the film, Clarice Starling, only reappeared in the poorly received 2001 sequel Hannibal. Even Bryan Fuller’s cult classic TV adaptation of Thomas Harris’ source material novels couldn’t use Clarice due to complicated divisions of the rights.
But now Clarice is back, headlining a new CBS drama that picks up where The Silence of the Lambs left off and charts the next stages of the young agent’s career. For fans of the film it’s an enticing proposition, albeit one that has to contend with the inverse of the rights situation that plagued Fuller’s show; Clarice can use any...

CBS is continuing its experiment with its 10 p.m. slot, as the network known for procedurals and its “NCIS” franchise is increasingly trying out genre fare, particularly horror. On Thursday, CBS debuts “Clarice,” a sequel to “Silence of the Lambs” that follows FBI agent Clarice Starling one year after the events of the film. “Clarice,” with its focus on serial killers and their gory interests, will mark the second straight season that CBS will dabble with horror. Along with “Evil,” which features scenes of demonic possession and hauntings, CBS does not appear to be shying away from pushing the boundaries within its standards and practices department. “We haven’t gotten any notes that have held us back in any way,” “Clarice” showrunner Elizabeth Klaviter told TheWrap. “They’ve been just incredibly supportive and really excited by finding ways to work within the parameters of the network, but also create scary visuals,...

CBS’ “Silence of the Lambs” sequel “Clarice” won’t get to mention one of its most famous characters by name because of rights issues.
Despite taking place a year after the events of “Silence of the Lambs,” the CBS series will not mention Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic serial killer memorably played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film.
The rights to Thomas Harris’ characters are split between MGM and the Dino De Laurentiis Company. “Clarice” showrunner Elizabeth Klaviter explained that CBS only has the rights for characters introduced in Harris’ 1988 novel “Silence of the Lambs.” Unfortunately, since Lecter’s first appearance came in another Harris novel, “Red Dragon,” that makes him off-limits.
“Of course, Hannibal Lecter is an iconic villain, who has enchanted all Thomas Harris fans throughout a variety of series and movies. And it’s been really great to be able to experience all of those stories that are built around him,...

Jen Richards has joined the team at CBS’ “Clarice.”
The transgender actor, writer, producer and activist was first recommended by GLAAD’s director of trans representation, Nick Adams, to consult on the show, but she will be appearing on-screen, as well.
“All I can say is that the character intersects with Clarice’s storyline in a way that her transness isn’t central to her storyline, but her identity as a trans woman prompts her to discuss with Clarice the complicated legacy of Buffalo Bill,” Richards said during a virtual premiere event for “Clarice” on Monday night.
Richards initially thought she was just going to help the writers and producers “craft the character and make sure some younger, prettier tans actress had a good experience on set,” she admitted, but she ended up cast in the role she helped shape.

The 2020-21 television season is shaping up to be unprecedented.
Normally at this time of year, approximately three dozen new scripted shows have been announced across the Big Five broadcast networks, but this year as of press time there are only 13. Pilot production orders were already down this year, but the production shutdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic caused series orders to shrink further. While there are still shows in contention to be picked up, developed further or rolled over into next year’s cycle, the few series that did make the cut already are showing an overall increase in representation for women and people of color, both in front of the camera in leading roles, as well as behind-the-scenes as executive producers — with the exception of those on ABC and Fox: Those networks have made strides for women but have no people of color in executive producer roles,...

Fox has officially renewed two more series for next season, flagship comedy Last Man Standing, headlined by Tim Allen, and medical drama The Resident, starring Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp. Both come from 20th Century Fox TV and both had been a lock to come back.
The pickups leave freshmen Prodigal Son and Outmatched as the only remaining Fox scripted series yet to hear their fate. As we reported, drama Prodigal Son’s renewal is being finalized while comedy Outmatched is not expected to continue.
Last Man Standing and The Resident will join the rest of Fox’s returning live-action series on the bench of midseason. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the timing of Hollywood’s production reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic, Fox’s fall schedule only features scripted series that are either already in the can or are animated, as animation has not been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

The writers and execs at HBO should be happy.
The premium cabler was the only television network with writers nominated from two shows apiece both in the dramatic and comedy series categories of the Writers Guild Awards, which announced TV and radio nominations Wednesday.
Writers on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Lost also were among those nominated in the dramatic series category, joined by scribes from HBO's Deadwood and The Sopranos, and Fox's 24. Writers on HBO's Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm figured in comedy noms, along with those from NBC's 30 Rock and The Office, and Fox's Arrested Development.
NBC dominated the new series category, with noms for writers on its 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, along with ABC's Ugly Betty.
Nominations in film categories of the Writers Guild Awards are scheduled to be released Jan. 11.
The 2007 Writers Guild Awards are set for Feb. 11 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, with a simultaneous gala set for the Hudson Theater of the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York.
