When Yogi Berra was the Yankees’ star catcher in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he spent his off-seasons working — as a headwaiter in a restaurant, in a shoe factory, driving a Coca-Cola delivery truck and, with his teammate and close pal Phil Rizzuto, selling suits at a retail-clothing store and running a bowling alley in New Jersey. Berra was hardly the only sports hero making ends meet with winter jobs back in the days before Major League players were earning massive salaries — now as high as $30 million a year. Ask most baseball fans to name a player who’s had the honor to be enshrined at Cooperstown and they’re likely to mention an undisputable legend like Babe Ruth or Ted Williams, a recent inductee like Rickey Henderson or Craig Biggio, or a personal favorite from their hometown team. But there are dozens of lesser-known but very accomplished players with plaques on the walls of the Hall of Fame who have been largely forgotten by modern fans. Some of these players set records that are unlikely to ever be broken.
Meet the all-time leader in triples, the home run king of the pre-Babe Ruth era, the man who couldn’t strike out, and the 19th century speedster who shares a name with one of today’s rising stars.
Here are some of baseball’s greats you may never have heard of.

On February 16th, YouTube musician Rob Chapman posted a video of a talented slide guitarist who he found performing on the street in Brighton, UK. The video proved fairly popular (it has received more than 118,000 views to date), and Chapman decided he wasn't the one who deserved to pocket the ad revenue he had made from it. In a video released on March 17th, Chapman returned the busker, whose name is Andrew "Nelly" Niel, and offered him the £100 he made off the video. Niel, as you might imagine, was grateful for Chapman's generosity, and he played off the new video with a second helping of slide guitar. This story is the latest example of YouTube's power to shine a spotlight on talented individuals who deserve more attention than they have received. Frequent YouTube users will remember the tale of Ted Williams, who was able to go from homelessness to success...

Breaking: Summit Entertainment has landed screen rights to John Corey Whaley’s upcoming Young Adult novel Noggin, with Jamie Linden attached to write the script and direct the film. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen’s Temple Hill Entertainment will produce. The book will be published in April by the Simon & Schuster imprint Atheneum Books. It’s a pretty clever premise. A dying young man agrees to be cryogenically frozen, Ted Williams style, for as long as it takes for medical science to be able to cure the disease that is killing him. He wakes up just five years later and finds his head grafted onto the body of someone else. He’s still 16, but discovers life has moved on without him. Seeing that his friends have grown up and his life love is engaged to someone else, he tries to find a way to build a new life, even if new scars are inevitable.

Last year at this time, Argo had just surpassed the $100 million mark at the box-office on its way to winning three Oscars, including the statue for Best Picture. Ben Affleck’s true Hollywood story of the CIA’s risky mission to rescue six U.S. diplomats from the angry hive of the Iranian Islamic revolution in 1979 was bold, confident filmmaking, and his emergence as a sentimental favorite during awards season was as delightful as it was unlikely, considering the many ups and downs of his career. For baseball buffs, Detroit Tigers slugger Hank Greenberg is best known for hitting 183 RBIs in 1937 and 58 home runs in 1938, almost breaking Babe Ruth’s sacred record of 60 homers., For fans that know their Golden Age of Baseball history Greenberg — like Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio –is revered for sacrificing years of his glorious career to fight during World War II. In American Jewish households, however, there is a mythical religious aura surrounding Greenberg that goes beyond baseball. Actors can cultivate their skills through years of training and learning their craft from all sorts of experts. They can take steps to improve their appearance, whether through natural, chemical or surgical means. But unless I’m missing something, the one part of a performer that it seems there’s no real way of attaining other than the happy accident of being born with it, is the quality of the voice. Certainly this is something that be augmented by how it’s used, and a case can most likely be made that the size of the voice doesn’t matter. But if Ted Williams, a.k.a. the homeless man with the golden voice, taught us anything, it’s that some people are just born with a gift for speaking in a way that tickles the eardrum just so.
This gift can be put to use in a variety of effective ways.

Almost Interesting: Sam Neave’s Latest Technically Impressive, Dramatically Impotent
Coasting along on a matter of style over substance is Sam Neave’s latest film, Almost In Love, in which the indie director pulls a Rope (1948) and presents us with a film shot entirely in two continuous 40 minutes takes. Of course, similar feats have been done recently, such as both versions of the recent Silent House (2010, 2011), which were both filmed in one continuous take, and, to greater success, Aleksandr Sokurov’s Russian Ark (2002). But for all of the technical prowess on display here and in other mentioned titles, more often than not, we tend to focus more on flaws and sometimes awkward flourishes that would have been more easily avoided in multiple takes.

Chicago – Mention “documentary,” in word association, and the next response is often “Ken Burns.” Burns brought a new voice to the documentary, and re-engineered the art form so much, that his technique is the “Ken Burns Effect.” His latest feature film, “The Central Park Five,” was co-directed by his daughter Sarah Burns and his son-in-law David McMahon.
The film is about a severe miscarriage of justice. In New York City in 1989, a female jogger was sexually assaulted in Central Park. Five men of color – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Kharey Wise and Yusef Salaam – merely boys at the time, were in proximity of the incident and arrested for the crime. Despite no evidence that they committed the assault, confessions were coerced and used against them at a hastily assembled and highly publicized trial. When the inevitable guilty verdict was rendered, the boys were unjustly incarcerated during a crucial period in their lives.

By now, you probably know the story: Martin Short appeared on the fourth hour of Today yesterday to promote Madagascar 3. Partway through his conversation with co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, Gifford jovially asked Short to talk about his marriage — apparently unaware that Short’s wife, actress Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer in 2010. The former SNL star took Gifford’s clueless questions in stride, even though his heart must have been breaking… especially when Gifford went on to ask if he and Dolman were still in love, or how they make each other laugh. Eeeesh.

The co-hosts of "Today" got a surprise visitor on Monday morning when Ted Williams dropped by outside the plaza.
Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Al Roker were doing their usual thing when Lauer drew their attention to a "bizarre thing." He motioned past the crowds lined around the plaza, and cameras zoomed in to show Williams by a barricade.
"I love the 'Today' show," Williams shouted, waving before getting on his way.
"He did a flyby on us," Matt joked. "That was cool."
Williams was homeless until a Youtube video featuring his "golden" voice went viral and propelled him to national fame last year. Since then, he has done voiceover work for MSNBC, and even introduced the "Today" show.

This weekend sees the wide release of J. Edgar, Clint Eastwood's attempt to tell the life story of one of the 20th century's most important people-- an attempt that didn't work out so well if you ask some people. But the biopic, as much as it's a genre that can turn boring and preachy, is also the opportunity to tell the life stories of a lot of really fascinating people. So even though this weekend's biopic effort turned out kind of dull, we're not ready to give up! Here are five more people who are totally worthy of their own life stories being told onscreen, and why it's high time they get their chance. From baseball players to Presidents to a really crazy Prohibitionist, here are five "based on a true story" movies we're still looking for. Earlier this year, things seemed to be looking up for Ted Williams, the homeless man with the "golden voice" who became an Internet sensation. But Williams still had to wrestle with alcohol and crack addictions, and got some help when Dr. Phil McGraw helped him check into rehab. Williams had an almost immediate relapse, but he returned to 'Dr. Phil' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) Thursday to say he was doing better and offer an apology to Dr. Phil.
Dr. Phil said Williams looked pretty healthy, and Williams agreed that he was. "There were a lot of things I lied about," said Williams. "I owe you some amends, first of all. I lied about my sobriety, and I told people that you had exploited me." Williams explained he had acted to increase his fame and attract more lucrative deals.

I was saddened but frankly not all that surprised to receive word of the death of 27-year-old British singer Amy Winehouse on Saturday. Based on the sort of lifestyle that Winehouse had been leading, as documented relentlessly by the British tabloids over the nearly five years since “Back to Black” (2006) — her 1960’s soul/R&B-inspired second album that was highlighted by the hit single “Rehab,” which Rolling Stone recently named the 194th greatest song of all-time — made her a five-time Grammy winner and a household name, it was only a matter of time. Considering the fact that she hadn’t released any new material since “Back to Black,” and demonstrated little to no progress in overcoming the personal demons that as often as not kept her from performing her existing material,...

Winick's Hollywood calling card was the 2002 Sundance film festival hit Tadpole, a $150,000 film shot entirely using digital video cameras that won him the event's directing award. A subsequent career directing more mainstream movies left him with less time to pursue his work with InDigEnt – or Independent Digital Entertainment – a company he founded in 1999 to help independent film-makers use the new technology.
Winick always insisted that digital cameras helped bring the best out of actors. "You really don't feel the presence of that big mechanism of film," he told the Washington Post in 2002. "Instead,...

Snoop Dogg and Warren G rose to notoriety nearly 20 years ago by rapping the kinds of lyrics and producing the kinds of songs that make Tipper Gore very upset. Today, their tracks still require Parental Advisory labels, but in addition to aurally corrupting America’s youth, two of rap and hip-hop’s biggest names are doing it commercially. MetroPCS tapped Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. and the original Regulator for an original web series dubbed The G-Connection. It starts off with Ted Williams channeling Rod Roddy and introducing our host Warren G, who’s channeling Chuck Woolry. Warren then introduces Snoop Dogg, who plays a trio of characters looking to win the affection of model Brittany Dailey on a game show that’s almost an exact replica of Love Connection. The show is off to a very good start. It’s a send-up that takes itself seriously, complete with the soft-focus...

But of course! How was I so slow to see this coming? You all remember Ted Williams, the first internet instant celebrity of 2011?
Just two months ago, he was an ex-professional voice man reduced to being homeless, begging for money on the streets, until a video of him was circulated on the internet, making him literally an overnight sensation.
Last we heard, the stress of his sudden fame had gotten to him, and he cracked up, getting into trouble after a physical altercation with one of his daughters, and checking himself into a rehab center to deal with his still on going drug and alcohol problems. He is now living in a “sober house” with other recovering addicts, getting his life together and working to get gigs as an announcer.
Now Williams, today, announced that he’s signed a deal, and in two weeks, begins taping a new reality TV series,...

Viral sensation-turned-overnight sensation Ted Williams is using that golden voice to speak up about his instant-celebrity status and the challenges it has caused. "I just wanted to take advantage of every media outlet that I could for the sake of not having to wake up and have somebody say it was a dream," Williams exclusively told E! News on Thursday at Millions of Milkshakes in West Hollywood, where the onetime homeless man was being honored with his very own concoction, The Golden Shake. "So, I rushed into a few things." When the conversation turned to Dr. Phil and his efforts last month to get Williams into rehab, only to see him leave soon after, the 53-year-old reveals why he decided not to go...

Ted Williams, the internet-famed golden-voiced homeless guy who was hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers then it was discovered he’d been arrested like 600 times and he faded from our internet consciousness, has re-appeared in California, getting a milkshake named after him at the Millions of Milkshakes in West Hollywood: “Oh, the ‘Ted Williams’ milkshake. That must be named after that homeless guy with the cool voice who had that viral video two years ago.” – What every tourist will definitely say in 2012. As we recall, Ted Williams is not the only internet star to follow the career path of Viral Video > Some Stuff, Kinda? > Milkshakes… You can get a Ted Williams Milkshake Or an Antoine Dodson Milkshake! In your Face, Evolution of Dance Guy! Unfortunately, while I’d like to think this means Ted Williams’ legal problems are over, I don’t think we can assume that quiiiiite yet…...

Showcasing your talent on the web might be the easiest way to get yourself noticed. Justin Bieber, Greyson Chance, Ted Williams as well as duo father/daughter Jorge and Alexa Narvaez are some of those who have tasted fame after their footage was uploaded on the largest video-sharing site YouTube.
Now, a ten-year-old Heather Russell is creating online buzz after home-made videos of her singing her own songs, including the one titled "She Needs Love", made their ways out. The kid is dubbed as the next singing sensation after Bieber, and her soulful voice draws comparison to Mariah Carey's.
The little girl has written her own songs since she's just 8 years old. Her first song is called "Beautiful" and she takes her music inspiration from the likes of Prince, Justin Timberlake, Queen and Alicia Keys. Grammy-winning producer Rob Fusari, who worked with Lady GaGa in "The Fame" album, has taken her under his wings.

Ted Williams re-surfaces again less than a month after he was gone from the public's eyes to get sober. The man who went from homeless to world's sensation when his golden voice video was uploaded to YouTube, appeared on "Today" Wednesday, February 9 morning to talk about the sudden rush of fame and what followed.
Williams said his decision to check in to a rehab of Dr. Phil's choice was "rushed", which was why he left before the program was completed. "It was too much, too fast, and I was just not really focused on what I should be doing," he said, adding "I love Dr. Phil, his concern and his caring. But I felt scripted. I was doing live phone-ins from rehab."

Two things that don’t belong together: Teen Mom and Jersey Shore. Yes, they’re both on MTV. Yes, our knowledge of space and time and the universe tells us that they occupy the same general plane of existence. But if we could alter the space-time continuum and carefully place the two in separate alternate realities, we would. Alternate realities as far apart as alternate realities can get, however that would work.
And yet, there’s our beloved Teen Mom Maci Bookout — the seemingly most grounded of the four young women, with the best support system to boot, featured on...
