Neca owns every event and has just won the San Diego Comic-Con with the reveal of the Guillermo del Toro collection, which begins with a pair of toys from del Toro’s horror fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth and the ghost Santi (Junio Valverde) from his The Devil’s Backbone (2001). The two larger Pan’s Labyrinth statues depict the […]...

Hell's Kitchen: Soul stew image likely from the 1922 Benjamin Christensen horror classic 'Häxan / Witchcraft Through the Ages.' Day of the Dead post: Cinema's Top Five Scariest Living Dead We should all be eternally grateful to the pagans, who had the foresight to come up with many (most?) of the overworked Western world's religious holidays. Thanks to them, besides Easter, Christmas, New Year's, and possibly Mardi Gras (a holiday in some countries), we also have Halloween, All Saints' Day, and the Day of Dead. The latter two are public holidays in a number of countries with large Catholic populations. Since today marks the end of the annual Halloween / All Saints' Day / Day of the Dead celebrations, I'm posting my revised and expanded list of the movies' Top Five Scariest Living Dead. Of course, by that I don't mean the actors listed below were dead when the movies were made.

We live in age of images, from Instagram to SnapChat, from the visuals of big screen spectacles to the intimacy of small screen dramas, to even the photos we carry around in our pockets on our phone. But what if one image took hold and you couldn't let go? Written and directed by Luiso Berdejo, and starring Junio Valverde, Leticia Dolera, Miriam Giovanelli, Ricardo Darín, Carlos Bardem, and Erik Palladino, the film follows Alex, living in Santa Monica, California, who one day finds a Polaroid picture of beautiful girl and promptly falls madly in love with her. He determines to track her down and soon begins a journey that will forge a connection with his deceased grandfather, while also taking Alex to the depths of his soul. In this exclusive clip, we get a nice sense of the nervy tone of the film, as well as the visual approach, which finds Berdejo mixing media.

Junio Valverde, The Devil's Backbone Dead Man's Voice Recording, The Sixth Sense: Top Five Scariest Living Dead Pt.5 When it comes to making my skin crawl while sitting in a movie theater, the pool sequence at the climax of Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone takes the top prize. As greedy, murderous villain Eduardo Noriega falls into a muddy, underground pool, a very young and very dead boy appears in the frame to embrace the horrified man. You can't hear Noriega screaming underwater, but what a disturbing, macabre, ghoulish, sinister, creepy, eerie scene anyhow. I hope I've made it clear that I was scared fucking witless. Come to think of it, there are other such moments in del Toro's atmospheric film as well. In fact, Peeping Toms and Janes should avoid The Devil's Backbone at all costs. Else, they'll never want to look through a keyhole again.

Moving to an isolated village to try and get away from the sun would probably be a hard thing for a teenage boy, but when people start dying around you and the villagers look to you as the culprit just not going to be a good day. The truth of the murders of course has nothing to do with you but it’s easy to blame the outsider right?
Santi is a boy with issues; the main one is that sunlight is deadly to him. The more he is exposed to it the more danger is in as it will ultimately lead to problems such as being extremely burnt and ultimately cancer. His mother is advised to move the boy to an isolated village where there is more shade and...

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to the worthwhile titles now streaming on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we look at alternatives to Footloose, The Skin I Live In and Texas Killing Fields .
This weekend music , murder and madness collide in theaters, where small-town teens discover the joys of choreography, a devastated widower delves into madness, and Texan detectives track a sadistic killer. But if these features won’t sate your cravings for badass dance moves, Spanish flavored drama, and true to life crime tales, we got you covered with a list of hot titles that are currently available online.
A town where dancing is illegal is turned upside down by a teen-aged rebel (Kenny Wormald) with the deep desire to cut loose…footloose. Craig Brewer, the subversive director behind Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, helms this sassy remake of the...

No, it isn't the Nightmare trifecta here. We just got this off the news wire and although it's all about the original Freddy Kreuger Robert Englund, this story doesn't have anything to do with the knife glove wearing slasher icon. This is all about Englund's new project Webcam 3D. Englund may have terrorized our dreams for years as Freddy Krueger but he is also a terrific actor without the makeup and this new film looks like a can't miss...

Can you imagine Freddy himself reaching off the screen and clawing you to death? That was attempted with "varying" degrees of success with Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, but in the latest film from Spanish filmmaker Antoni Sole entitled Web Cam 3D, Robert Englund will be getting another shot at the whole three-dimensional thing, sans the character of Freddy of course.
Screen Daily reports that Robert Englund, Michael Madsen, Junio Valverde, Amaia Salamanca, and Estella Warren are set to star in this latest horror feature, which tells the tale of a man who invites a group of teens to a party to film their exploits inside a house via web cams. Viewers are then asked to vote on who should die and who should live.
Familiar ground, we know, but the really good stuff lately has been coming from Spanish directors. Let's hope that trend continues here.

Web Cam tells the story of a man who lures a group of high school kids to a party, films them using discreet cameras and broadcasts it on the net. People are then asked to vote on who should die and who should live. Sound interesting?....

Robert Englund, Michael Madsen, Junio Valverde, Amaia Salamanca and Estella Warren are going to star in Web Cam 3D for Spanish filmmaker Antoni Sole next year. The story tells of a man (take your guess: Englund or Madsen) who invites a group of teens to a party. He films their exploits inside a house via web cams and asks those tuning in to the bash on the internet to vote for who will live and who will die. Web Cam is Sole's feature directorial debut.

It is fast approaching that unique portion of the year when all true matters arcane and diabolical are given the festive treatment, as Halloween prompts folks to deploy their broomsticks for something other than sweeping up after the household pet. Although we have recently seen cinematic quotas of the supernatural gobbled up by vampire and zombie flicks, it would be remiss to overlook the genuine chills instilled by the most successful exponents of the ghost movie genre. So here are ten of the scariest ghost movies to put the frighteners on us poor, trembling cinema-goers.

Leaky plumbing becomes an unlikely source of spine-tingling terror in this J-Horror offering from director Hideo Nakata, the man who had previously attached creepy connotations onto video cassettes and cold-calling in the first two Ringu films. Sharing some narrative ground with his earlier horror hits, Dark Water finds Nakata once again casting a...

“Small village, big hell.”—old Basque proverb.
Frequent startle jolts in Isidro Ortiz’s Eskalofrío (Shiver) are determined to make you yelp outloud, even if perhaps a little too obviously. Yet another film that I first heard about on Twitch, Shiver premiered in the Panorama section of this year’s Berlinale to tepid critical response. Expectation factored heavily as audiences went into the film assuming it to be a horror flick when, in truth, it’s more a competent thriller with some horror tropes deferentially approached though never fully developed. Few disagree that the film is professionally mounted, the performances solid, and that it respectfully carries on the tradition of Spanish “horror” films like The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage, borrowing—in fact—teenage actor Junio Valverde from Backbone, Labyrinth‘s Oscar-winning set designer Pilar Revuelta, and The Orphanage‘s composer Fernando Velázquez to firm up its genre pedigree.
