There are umpteen shows in the genre of family comedy-drama. Full House, Modern Family, That 70s Show, The Wonder Years, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, etc. are shows that cater to the above-mentioned genre, and each show is based on a different premise, yet the core remains the same: family members dealing with each other. The Upshaws is back with part five of the show, which further takes the viewers through the Upshaw family and the dilemmas they go through daily. Created by Regina Y. Hicks and Wanda Sykes from the start, part five of this Netflix original series was released on April 17, 2024.
Part five of The Upshaws only has six episodes, each having a runtime of twenty-five to thirty minutes, which is fair for situational comedy. The show begins with Lucretia Turner moving in with Bernard and her younger sister Regina, as she has to vacate her building because...

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.

Along with Louis-Dreyfus, the cast includes Abbi Jacobson, Bryan Cranston, Samira Wiley, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen, Wanda Sykes, Bowen Yang, Pamela Adlon and Sarah Silverman.
In Tangles, when Alzheimer’s disease begins to strip away her mother’s vibrant personality, a headstrong young woman is forced to return to her oddball family in the conservative small town she recently fled in order to care for her. Of the 19.5 million people who tuned into the Oscars on Sunday, 60.3 percent were female, according to Nielsen. While women (and girls age 2+) made up the significant majority of the audience for the 96th Academy Awards (as per usual), it was their lowest percentage since 2016 (58.4 percent female). Yes, even with “Barbie” in the (Dream)house.
Last year’s Academy Awards, also hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, were watched by 18.8 million viewers; 61.1 percent of them were female. The 2022 Oscars, hosted by three women — Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, Amy Schumer — skewed 61.0 percent female. The host-less 2021 program skewed 62.7 percent female; those were the first Covid-impacted Oscars and they settled for all-time low viewership.
The 2021 Oscars remain the high-water mark for representation among nominees, according to the annual study by USC’s Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and Adobe Foundation. “Nomadland” won Best Picture that year, Best Actress for Frances McDormand, and Best Director for Chloé Zhao.

Sunday’s Oscars drew an average of 19.5 million total viewers, according to Nielsen numbers, the most since Covid. The February 9, 2020 Academy Awards averaged 23.6 million viewers, which at the time was an all-time low.
The 2024 Academy Awards on ABC began at 7 p.m. Et/4 p.m. Pt, an hour earlier than every Oscars in (at least) recent memory. The early start time could have gone either way. The positive spin is that more potential viewers were awake; on the flip side, quite a few viewers may have inadvertently joined late.
The night belonged to “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” trophies-wise, but to “Barbie’s” Ryan Gosling in terms of buzz. “Oppenheimer” won seven statuettes including Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture. It’s Oscar time and the red carpet will be laid out on the 10th of March to welcome Hollywood’s top celebrities who will compete for the coveted golden statuette. While the winning performances in each category will be the main focus of the Academy awards, an important cog in the Oscar wheel is the host of the ceremony who brings the events a full circle.
Television host Jimmy Kimmel on his talk show
This year, popular television host Jimmy Kimmel will reprise his Oscar hosting duties in what will be his 4th time anchoring the show after 2017, 2018, and 2023. The first time Jimmy Kimmel showed up at the Oscars, he didn’t have a ticket. It was the mid-1990s, back when he was on Kroq’s “Kevin & Bean” morning drive-time show, and he and host Kevin Ryder decided to sneak into the Academy Awards Governors Ball.
“I remember us getting there 9 o’clock in the morning in tuxedos,” Kimmel recalls. “We figured that if we hung around long enough, it would seem like we belonged there. But then moments before the guests began to arrive, they kicked us right out.”
Their mistake was claiming they were guests of Gil Cates — just a name they saw in the Oscars credits, but actually the longtime Academy Awards executive producer. Still, Kimmel and Ryder slipped back in — and then had a glorious evening. “The only thing I really remember from that night is we told John Travolta that we snuck in...

Clone Force 99 is back in action.
The last time we saw the genetically altered clone troopers in Disney+’s The Bad Batch, they were dealing with the presumed death of Tech, who’d died during a mission, and the loss of clone Omega, who’d been captured by the Empire. Omega, however, had also reunited with Kaminoan scientist Nala Se as well as Crosshair, both of whom seemed to be waking up to the Empire’s true (evil) nature. Meanwhile, Hunter and Wrecker were determined to track down Omega (and, perhaps, Crosshair), while Echo joined up with Rex to fight the Empire.
On Feb. 21, the third and final season of the animated series debuts on Disney+ (watch the trailer). Disney+ released an official description for the third season: “In the epic final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the Batch will have their limits tested in the fight to...

The 2024 Grammys mark Trevor Noah’s fourth consecutive year as the host of music’s biggest night.
In his opening monologue, Noah took a moment to praise all musicians — nominated at this year’s awards or otherwise. “These people write the soundtracks of our lives,” he said.
The comedian pointed at Barbie music producer Mark Ronson’s table and called him one of the greatest producers of all time. He continued by saying that Ronson’s mother-in-law, Meryl Streep, would be sitting at the table right there.
Then, Streep herself, accidentally crashed his opener by arriving at her seat late. The Oscar-winning actress apologized to the host, and he told her she didn’t need to.
“This moment right here. Do you know what this means? The Grammys is gonna win an Oscar,” he joked. “I don’t know how. I want to thank both Academies. Thank you so much.

“This moment right here. Do you know what this means? The Grammys is gonna win an Oscar,” he joked. “I don’t know how. I want to thank both Academies. Thank you so much.

Trevor Noah’s opening monologue at the 2024 Grammy Awards was a star-studded rundown of the biggest names in the industry who showed up to music’s biggest night.
He played up the whole thing like he was something of a magician: The moment the comedian mentioned Meryl Streep, one of the evening’s presenters, she appeared in the arena as if summoned. A few minutes later, when he teased a highly anticipated appearance from Taylor Swift (possibly with some Reputation TV news?), the musician glided into the room, trailed by...

Dave Chappelle has won his fifth Grammy for best comedy album and second in a row for What’s in a Name, a 40-minute Netflix special taken from a speech at his former high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he defended his controversial 2021 special The Closer, which won the comedy album prize at the 2023 Grammys, and expressed support for freedom of expression.
With his win at the 2024 Grammys, Chappelle beat fellow nominees Wanda Sykes (I’m an Entertainer), Sarah Silverman (Someone You Love), this year’s Grammys host Trevor Noah (I Wish You Would) and Chris Rock, whose Selective Outrage live Netflix special featured Rock speaking out publicly about being slapped onstage by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars. Chappelle wasn’t in attendance to accept the award, which was handed out during the premiere ceremony, where the majority of this year’s Grammys are given out,...

Ahead of tonight’s festivities, see need-to-know details about the 2024 show below. Trevor Noah is hosting the Grammys for the fourth time this year. Former Daily Show host Trevor Noah is returning to host the awards show for the fourth consecutive year. He’s also nominated for Best Comedy Album, telling The Hollywood Reporter last week that fellow nominees Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle are his heroes. “I think to myself how crazy it is to even be in the same category as these people,” he added. “I’m really happy and grateful to just be in that company.” Sza is the most-nominated artist,...

Dave Chappelle has four previous Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Album and four previous wins: “The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas” (2018), “Equanimity and The Bird Revelation” (2019), “Sticks and Stones” (2020) and “The Closer” (2023). Indeed, he’s undefeated in the category and is a contender again this year for “What’s in a Name?” If he prevails again he’d tie for second place on the all-time list of winners in the category.
SEEGrammys dilemma: Will Taylor Swift win another controversial Album of the Year title?
To date the biggest winner for Best Comedy Album is the now-disgraced Bill Cosby. He claimed six in a row from 1965 to 1970, and then won a seventh in 1987. Of the five comedians who are next in line, Chappelle is the only one still living. The late George Carlin and Richard Pryor won five apiece, and Chappelle shares fourth place with fellow quadruple...

Grammys Host Trevor Noah Talks Battling “Heroes” Chappelle, Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes for Comedy Album
Trevor Noah is returning to host the Grammy Awards for a fourth time — but this is the first time he is hosting as a nominee.
Noah earned his first nomination for best comedy album at the 2020 show with Son of Patricia, losing to Dave Chappelle’s Sticks & Stones. He’s battling the comedy king again on Sunday, alongside other icons: Chris Rock (Selective Outrage) and Wanda Sykes (I’m An Entertainer). All of their specials aired on Netflix; Sarah Silverman’s Someone You Love, on HBO, round out the nominees.
“I’m nominated alongside my heroes: Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle. I don’t ever take those moments for granted. I think to myself how crazy it is to even be in the same category as these people,” Noah tells The Hollywood Reporter. “When I was thinking of [doing] comedy, Dave Chappelle was already an accomplished comedian. Welcome class! In today's lesson on "Why Star Wars Animation is the best Star Wars," we'll be talking about the third and final season of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch."
A continuation of the beloved "Clone Wars" animated series centered on the members of Clone Force 99 (each of whom bears unique genetic traits or mechanical implants that distinguish them from other clones), "The Bad Batch" does a better job of balancing standalone storytelling with connections to the rest of the "Star Wars" universe than most of its live-action peers on Disney+. More than that, it's a show that takes the anti-fascist messaging at the core of George Lucas' creation to heart by revealing how the rise of the Galactic Empire led to a clamp-down on both personal freedoms and the quality of life for your average civilian in a galaxy far, far away.
That goes double for the clones, all...

Jon Stewart will make a surprising return to The Daily Show, 25 years after starting on the show. He will host the Comedy Central late-night show one night a week through the 2024 election cycle.
The news comes eight years after he stepped down from hosting the show, which revolutionized late-night television and brought through the likes of Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Samantha Bee and Steve Carell.

Deadline told you back in November that one of the ideas floated for a new host was to bring in a major name to front the show through the election. Stewart will host on Monday nights, which are believed to be the show’s most watched day and gives him plenty of news from the weekend to catch up.

Jon Stewart is returning as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” Before you get too excited, the assignment is part-time, and the plan is for him to stay on as host through the November 2024 presidential election cycle, and EP at least through 2025.
Stewart will host the program only on Mondays, but executive produce every episode. The other evenings will be hosted by a rotating panel of the show’s “All-Star Correspondents.” If you’re wondering why Stewart is taking the Monday slot, it’s because that’s traditionally the most-watched “Daily Show” episode of the week, and acts as catch up for all the news that’s gone on over the weekend.
Although “The Daily Show” began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn as its host, the show rose in the public consciousness during Stewart’s time hosting from 1999 to 2015. Under Kilborn, the show was mostly irreverent and focused on pop culture.
