Created, directed, cowritten, and coproduced by Zack Snyder, Netflix's new zombie movie Army of the Dead follows a group of mercenaries who come together to retrieve a whopping $200M sitting in an LA casino vault. The catch? The city is riddled with zombies, and they only have a 32 hour-window to accomplish their mission before the place gets seized by a nuclear strike to rid the place of the undead. To ramp the thrilling quotient all the way up, the movie is filled to the brim with super-evolved zombies. But, even among the decaying crowds, the one undead character who easily takes the cake is Valentine - a white tiger zombie.
Given the Sin City setting, the writers snuck in a line that references Valentine as one of Siegfried and Roy's wide collection of tigers. In case you missed that particular chapter of Vegas history, Siegfried & Roy were a well-renowned...

Exclusive: Apple is to launch a podcast about pop culture icons Siegfried & Roy – marking one of its first major forays into original audio series.
The series has landed at Apple TV+, its television and film division, and will launch on the Apple podcast platform.
It comes at a time where competition is becoming more prevalent in the podcast business with major rival Spotify getting heavily into originals that only live on its platform.
Apple has cautiously dipped its toes into original shows in the past but they have largely been focused around its music platform – The Zane Lowe Podcast Series – or its original television shows such as For All Mankind.
Earlier this month, it unveiled The Line from Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, which will feature an original podcast series and a TV docuseries. The Siegfried & Roy series marks the first major show to come without an immediate television companion.

Siegfried Fischbacher, who teamed with partner Roy Horn to become Siegfried & Roy, among the most famous magicians in the world and one of Las Vegas’ biggest draws, died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at his home in Las Vegas. He was 81.
Fischbacher’s death was announced by his sister Dolore, who lives as a nun in Munich, Germany, to the German newspaper Bild. The news subsequently was confirmed by his publicist, Dave Kirvin.
“He fell asleep gently and peacefully,” Dolore told Bild. She said Fischbacher had been in the care of hospice nurses at his home.
Known for their flamboyant, Liberace-style costumes and the use in their act of “big cats” — lions, leopards, jaguars and, most famously, rare white tigers — Siegfried & Roy were partners in life as well as onstage who carved out a 40-year career with elaborate, large-scale illusions. The headlining duo became synonymous with Vegas glitz and over-the-top showbiz glamour.

When we hear the names Siegfried and Roy today, most people automatically think back to the unfortunate accident in 2003 that ended the careers of the magician duo. During a show on October 3, 2003, Roy Horn was attacked by one of his trained white tigers, Mantacore. Roy survived that attack along with Siegfried, and their lives have never been the same. There’s so much more to the story of Siegfried and Roy apart from that particular incident, and a biopic about their lives and careers is something that’s probably long overdue. Netflix has released a stunning first trailer for their upcoming seven-part western series Godless. The series comes from producer Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Logan Lucky) and director Scott Frank (A Walk Among the Tombstones). It also has a fantastic cast that includes Jack O’Connell, Michelle Dockery, and Jeff Daniels.
The trailer offers up a collection of intriguing visuals as a narrator says:
"Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch. The love, the hope, the dream, to be, to lose. For your life is lived in me. To remember this brings painful joy. Tis a human thing to love what death has touched."

It's finally here! The Labour Day weekend isn't really the end of summer, but it certainly feels that way. Maybe it's the residual instinct ingrained in us after years of elementary and high school, when summertime meant freedom from school for a full two months and September meant the end of all that and the return to teachers, books, and (ugh) homework.
No matter how you feel about the holiday, there's still lots of ways to squeeze the most fun possible out of your extra day off! And what better way to while away an afternoon than with a movie at a Cineplex theatre. Without further ado, here's our recommendations for what to see in theatres this long weekend!

I would have bet big money that either Siegfried and/or Roy, the German magician duo famous for their Las Vegas shows, died a few years ago after being attacked by one of their tigers on stage. But I would have lost that bet. Despite that very real tiger attack, they're apparently both still alive, because THR reports that they've both signed on to become executive producers of a new biopic about their remarkable ascension to Vegas magician superstardom.
Siegfried and Roy's high-camp style magic show, involving white lions and tigers, was incredibly successful. Las Vegas performers Siegfried & Roy are getting the biopic treatment. The German magicians and entertainers, who were a Las Vegas institution before an onstage tiger attack brought a sudden end to their careers, have signed a deal for a film version of their extraordinary lives. Philipp Stolzl, director of 2013 period drama The Physician, has signed on to helm the project for German studio Ufa Fiction. Physician screenwriter Jan Berger will pen the script. In switching from low-key character dramas (read: Mud and Take Shelter) to the realm of science fiction, director Jeff Nichols has cited many inspirations including E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And those touchstones shine bright in today’s new trio of clips for Nichols’ latest creative effort, Midnight Special.
Set to make its bow during SXSW 2016 next week, there’s a palpable buzz surrounding the filmmaker’s genre departure, and it’s one that orbits around the father-son bond between Michael Shannon (Roy) and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher.
Heavy on style and light on spoilers, the snippets come by way of The Playlist, not only showcasing the striking neon-blue visuals, but also Midnight Special‘s star-studded ensemble. Hunting down Lieberher’s peculiar (and powerful) anomaly is Adam Driver’s deranged governmental agent, who believes the child’s innate power ought to be kept under lock and key. Also...

Ambiguity might be the most useful item in the science fiction toolbox. Blade Runner’s mysteries still rob people of sleep, and you’d need a wall chart to work out Shane Carruth’s Primer. However, when used in rash abundance — as in this latest film from Mud and Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols — the results can leave the viewer in a rather less complimentary state of bafflement. The details in Midnight Special, Nichols’ homage-heavy sci-fi thriller set in his signature Deep South locale, are sometimes so scant as to be jarring. Yes, less is often more in Hollywood, but it can also be just plain less.
We open on a police broadcast as, from a motel room, two men (Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton) and a boy named Alton (Jaeden Lieberher, decked out in blue goggles) speed away in a car. The newscaster reports that the child has been abducted,...

I'm extremely excited for this upcoming sci-fi film called Midnight Special. The movie comes from director Jeff Nichols, who previously brought us great films like Take Shelter and Mud. The movie stars Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard, Kirsten Dunst, and Joel Edgerton, and it looks fantastic.
The film has a very classic '80s Amblin vibe to it and was inspired by films such as E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Starman. We have our first clip for the movie to share with you today, and it offers us a mysterious, intense moment that features Shannon's character being very overprotective of a young boy wearing goggles. Here’s the official synopsis:
Every mile that Roy and his eight-year-old son cover on their journey down highways and byways brings us closer to their incredible story. Gradually, we begin to understand why this boy with extraordinary powers has to wear protective glasses.

Part Close Encounters of the Third Kind, part E.T., the maiden clip for sci-fi flick Midnight Special has loomed online ahead of busy festival season for Jeff Nichols’ drama piece.
Arriving on the heels of an array of hypnotic images from earlier this week, the snippet sheds light on the ominous tone underpinning the director’s genre departure, and it’s one that largely emanates from Jaeden Lieberher’s peculiar young boy. Set against the inky blackness of a remote gas station, Lieberher’s estranged character wanders away from the protection of his father (Take Shelter star Michael Shannon), before a chance meeting with a random stranger appears to instigate a sudden meteor shower.
It’s a freak event that the child appears partially responsible for as well, apologizing to Shannon’s frightened patriarch before the camera pans up at the debris scorching through Earth’s atmosphere. But the question...

The first of two Jeff Nichols films arriving this year, Midnight Special finds him in sci-fi thriller mode. Inspired by Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and Starman, the film will finally premiere next week at the Berlin Film Festival, and ahead of our review, we have the first clip, a batch of new images, and an official synopsis from the festival.
Led by Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Sam Shepard, Adam Driver, and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher, it follows a father who sets to protect his uniquely gifted son while being hunted by a pair of dangerous groups. Also set to screen at SXSW (where they just expanded their line-up), hopefully this is one of the highlights of the spring as Nichols expands his scope. Check out everything below.

After executing the dramatic – and critically-acclaimed – one-two punch with Take Shelter and Mud, director Jeff Nichols will return in a major way in 2016, releasing two feature films should all go according to plan. One of which is Loving, a brand new drama that stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga; the other, arriving from the other end of the spectrum, is a sci-fi thriller known as Midnight Special.
Returning at the helm, the writer-director is evidently casting his eye to the genre films of yesteryear with his next project, with today’s trailer containing the some of the wide-eyed wonder found in such classics as E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In terms of the plot driving the extra-terrestrial happenings on screen, Midnight Special will follow a loving father Roy (Shannon) who is left no choice but to go on the run with his son Alton after discovering that he inexplicably possess supernatural abilities.

Once set for a Thanksgiving release, Jeff Nichols‘ Mud follow-up, the sci-fi adventure Midnight Special, was moved to March, presumably to avoid the certain genre competition in The Hunger Games and Star Wars. Strangely though, Warner Bros. dated it for March 18th, 2016, a mere week before their little Batman v Superman film will tear up the box-office.
Since no one has seen it yet — the cast has spilled that it’s likely to stop by Berlin and SXSW — we won’t jump to conclusions, but considering it’s the studio debut by Nichols, we’re quite looking forward to. Siegfried and Roy shook off any of the jitters you might expect them to have -- and snuggled up to a new arrival at The Mirage ... a baby tiger. The magic duo bottle fed the little big cat in Vegas on Thursday ... as they returned to the resort where they famously performed for years, and where Roy was nearly killed during a tiger attack. Clearly, no hard feelings. Plus, it's impossible to resist adorable baby tigers.

There is a case to be made for home movies as the purest form of cinema. It’s folly, of course, to pit films against one another based on the circumstances under which they were made; to argue what is realer, and thus more valid, than the other. In a camera’s lens, especially, the lines of truth and lies blur and overlap. It’s just that in what we believe to be reality the stakes are always higher, the emotions elevated. One of the first films ever made, the Lumière brothers’ L'arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat, was a succinct 56 seconds that depicted the arrival of a train at its station in Lyon, France. When it was first shown to the public it was the audience’s virgin film-viewing experience, and it was reported that many were frightened by the illusion that the train was coming straight for them.

One of the hardest things about the way this generation of filmmakers has internalized the movies that inspired them is that watching their movies can sometimes feel like you're reading a laundry list of the things that they saw when they were younger, rather than watching something where all of those influences have crystallized into something new. "Earth To Echo" could accurately be described as a "found-footage" riff on "Explorers" and "E.T.", and that description would certainly impart something of the film to someone. But the thing that "Earth To Echo" most accurately reflects from the best of the '80s movies that continue to linger with viewers, even 30 years after many of them first hit theaters, is that sense of something genuine about the kids. When I look at "E.T.", the first thing that strikes me as remarkable is just how right Spielberg got all of the kids in the film.
