A few weeks ago, we chatted to Mark Gatiss about his Doctor Who series 10 episode, The Empress Of Mars…
This Saturday evening, Mark Gatiss will take us on a trip to Mars. 1881 Mars, to be precise, where the Doctor and Bill find themselves mystified by the presence of a group of Victorian colonists. Gatiss’ ninth Doctor Who episode is space historical The Empress Of Mars, which features the return of some familiar foes.

Did you spot the photo of Amy Poehler in Liz Lemon’s 30 Rock office? Or the Han Solo model in Firefly?
Surrounding your workspace with more clutter than a mid-noughties Myspace page is one way to assert individualism inside a bland corporate identity. It tells the world, ‘I’m not a number, I’m a free man! A free man overly fond of Pikachu!’ It can also be an act of mild rebellion, akin to leaving out the short and skinny bit of your school tie instead of the long, fat bit of your school tie that the man wants to see.
And then there’s sentimental desk décor, the talismans from loved ones from which you draw daily strength, reminding you why you shackled yourself to the capitalist cart horse in the first place. These are the photos, drawings and poorly made pottery items that prove you exist outside of work,...

According to production designer Michael Pickwoad, Doctor Who series 10 could enter production at a different time of year…
Adding fuel to the rumour fire, Doctor Who’s incumbent production designer Michael Pickwoad has revealed that series 10 of the BBC’s spacefaring family drama will enter production a little later than usual.
According to Pickwoad (in conversation with fan podcast Radio Free Skaro), his work on series 10 won't begin until February or March 2016. Providing a stark comparison - series 9 had already started shooting in January 2015.
Pickwoad – who joined Who in 2010, starting with the brilliant A Christmas Carol – said this of his upcoming work on season 10:
"Well, that won't start until... you know, well into the new year. It doesn't start shooting for a short while. And so, it will be - you know, probably - February, March before we start getting onto the next one."

It's not long until Doctor Who takes its place again as a staple of Saturday night television. Peter Capaldi is back to helm the Tardis into his second run with Jenna Coleman's Clara by his side and in the two-part opener, Michelle Gomez makes her comeback as the Master's female incarnation, Missy.
At this year's Edinburgh television festival, an audience of fans were screened The Magician's Apprentice, the premiere episode written by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie Macdonald. Following that there was a Q&A session hosted by journalist Andrew Collins with Moffat himself and fellow executive producer Brian Minchin in attendance. The Doctor Who series 8 disc release features a wealth of bonus material including the terrific Earth Conquest doc. Here's Pete's verdict...
If you’re reading this review, then there’s a good chance that you’ve both seen the twelve episodes that make up Peter Capaldi’s debut series and know exactly what we’re going to say about them. Series 8 of Doctor Who has been hailed by many as the best in several years, and one of the best since the show’s revival in 2005. It’s a verdict that we here at Den of Geek find it hard to argue with, frankly. From the light-hearted opener Deep Breath to the action-packed and slightly bonkers finale Death In Heaven, with thought-provoking episodes like Listen and Kill The Moon along the way, Series 8 has been a confident start to a brand new era for the world’s longest-running sci-fi programme.

Does this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly defy the laws of physics by being bigger on the inside than it would appear from looking at its exterior? Fans of the British science fiction show Doctor Who may well think so. For this week’s cover story, senior writer Clark Collis travels to the UK to meet with Peter Capaldi, the new star of the now 51-year-old time travel saga, and to find out what fans can expect from the forthcoming season of Doctor Who, which premieres on BBC America on Aug. 23. “He’s more alien than we’ve seen him for a while,...

Whoa. Spotted on ebay:
The personal note-book used by Tristan Peatfield, who was Production Designer on Series 5 of Doctor Who (2010), between the departure of Ed Thomas and the arrival of Michael Pickwoad. A 14cm x 21cm black covered “Guildhall” notebook, it contains notes on a number of productions on which Tristan worked (most of which I cannot identify), including at least 13 pages dedicated to Doctor Who and in particular to the episode The Lodger. This includes text, designs and drawings in pencil by Tristan and his colleague Peter McKinstry, the best of which is probably the original design for the “Lodger Tardis” console and “Amy Pond, Tardis Pilot” (see photos).
This is an absolutely unique, one-off, used on-set item, which I am selling on behalf of Tristan for the benefit of The Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, which raises money for children’s projects in Sri Lanka. Tristan’s daughter Isabella...

Hopefully you’ve already seen our Doctor Who post from earlier today with the very excellent new trailer and photos. Shortly after that post went live, BBC America released terrific movie-type posters for the first four episodes of the second half of the season, similar to what they did for the first half of the season, and a press release, synopses of those first four episodes, and interviews with showrunner Steven Moffat and stars Matt Smith, and Jenna-Louise Coleman.
The posters are gorgeous and not very spoilery, but the synopses are obviously a bit spoilery, as are the interviews. Skip them if you’re worried, study them if you’re not. Enjoy!
The Doctor kicks off this new run of adventures by searching for his companion Clara – an Impossible Girl he’s already lost twice. Together they find themselves battling monsters on distant alien planets, trapped in a Russian submarine with a deadly passenger,...

The Ice Warriors, directors, The Bells Of St John and all things Doctor Who. Steven Moffat has been chatting about the lot...
Last Friday, the BBC held a small press launch for the return of Doctor Who, which heads back to our screens on Saturday 30th March with The Bells Of St John. Our spoiler-free review of the episode can be found here.
Once the episode was over, there was a Q&A session, which for the most part was an exercise, as all concerned admitted, in saying a lot without actually giving anything away. As such, Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and Steven Moffat were quizzed on such matters as to whether they were on Twitter, plans for the 50th anniversary of the show, and how things were going.
So here's what Steven Moffat had to say...

The interior of Doctor Who's Tardis has had a pretty hefty renovation, and this is our first look! It's a really big change, as it's got a very cool, sleek new minimalist look. I don't know about you, but I love it! You'll get your first tour of the new Tardis by production designer Michael Pickwoad after the Doctor Who Christmas Special airs. I can't wait to see it in action!

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has explained the decision to revamp the Tardis. A new version of the Doctor's craft - designed by Michael Pickwoad - will debut in Christmas Day's festive special 'The Snowmen'. "I thought we'd been getting progressively whimsical with the interior of the Tardis," Moffat said at a screening of the episode last night (December 19). "I started to think, 'Well, why is that? It's not a magical place. It's actually a machine'. And actually potentially, as you'll see more spectacularly later, quite a scary place sometimes. (more)...

Doctor Who will be getting something else besides a new companion during the Christmas 2012 special. It is apparently time – get it? get it? time? sorry – for a little redecorating inside the Tardis. We have a small but exceptionally cool glimpse of it, plus this little blurb from the BBC:
Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat has revealed that we’ll see a new look Tardis when the Time Lord returns in The Snowmen on Christmas Day at 5.15pm [in the UK].

Oh dwahhling, bad dreams are soooo Freddy Krueger. Oh, dwahhling, am I the most patronising woman on the planet?”
Well, on the face of it, The God Complex would almost certainly be shut down and bulldozed on Polizzi's watch – but fortunately, you've come to the wrong place if you're looking for smug hectoring. On the other hand, if you're looking to check into a review peppered with waffle, cheap pot shots and bad jokes, then you've come to the right place. But as a bonus, I'll throw in lashings of praise, mini bars full of admiration and a free bath robe.

Obvious picks were Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, And Avatar. Once again, no love for Nine, but I was pleased to see an embrace from this guild for The Lovely Bones. Now that Art Directors, Producers, Directors, and Screen Actors guilds have announced their nominees, the only other “countries” to be heard from are the Writers Guild and American Cinema Editors. We’ll hear from the WGA on Monday and the Ace on Tuesday.
From THR by way of Awards Daily, here are the nominations announced earlier on Friday by the Art Directors Guild. The Adg will hold its 14th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Feb. 13 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The lush and iridescent forests of "Avatar," the sooty Victorian London of "Sherlock Holmes" and even the trashed, morning-after Vegas suites of "The Hangover" all caught the collective eye of the Art Directors Guild, which announced its nominations Friday.
The Adg, which will hold its 14th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Feb. 13 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, unveiled noms in nine categories, covering movies, TV, commercials and music videos.
In the category of fantasy film, "Avatar" will do battle with two other sci-fi titles -- "District 9" and "Star Trek" -- as well as the book adaptations "Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince" and "Where the Wild Things Are."
The nominees for period film range from "Sherlock Holmes," set in the 19th century, to the Depression-era America of "Public Enemies" to the World War II France of "Inglourious Basterds" as well as the post-war France of "Julie & Julia" and...

"I am not a number, I am a free man!" You've had the chance to read my advance review of the six-hour miniseries version of The Prisoner on AMC as well as my interviews with the series' stars Jim Caviezel and Sir Ian McKellen and screenwriter Bill Gallagher and production designer Michael Pickwoad, but now that the first night of AMC's three-part miniseres has aired, I'm curious to see what you thought. Did you fall under the surreal spell of The Prisoner? Were you captivated by the nefarious Village? Did Sir Ian McKellen steal the show? What did you make of Six's struggle for individuality in a topsy-turvy world designed to force him into assimilation? Curious to see what's happening? What are your theories about what the Village truly is? Are you finding the plot engaging, confusing, or plodding? And, most importantly, will you stick around to watch Nights Two and Three of The Prisoner?...

Two more behind the scenes clips have appeared for AMC's remake of The Prisoner. In the first one, prop master Egbert Kruger explains how the show will retain a retro 60s charm, while presenting us with technology far beyond what we have today (ie. the worm cam). The second features the show's production Designer Michael Pickwoad, who discusses designing and building "The Village," the mysterious and iconic place where Number 6 is held prisoner by an unknown enemy. In case you couldn't tell I'm extremely excited about this show in fact I'd say that, besides the BBC's remake of Survivors, it's at the very top of my must see list. The six one-hour episodes of The Prisoner are skedded to run sometime in 2009. For more behind the scenes treats from The Prisoner click here.
