After winning Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Crystal Globe for best director in 2018 for “Winter Flies,” the Slovenian-born Czech director Olmo Omerzu returns to its competition with the world premiere of his fourth feature “Bird Atlas.” It is co-written with his “Winter Flies” collaborator Petr Pýcha. The film’s sales agent, Cercamon, has given Variety exclusive access to its trailer.
Although it is an ensemble drama, the film unfolds through the perspective of a stubborn patriarch (Miroslav Donutil), old and unwell, but still running a family business, and the company’s accountant (Alena Mihulová), desperately trying to catch her last chance for true romantic love. And then there are the birds who comment upon the action like a Greek chorus. Omerzu notes, “This serves as a contrast to our main characters, who are so stubborn and so fixated on their own selfish needs and problems that they’re missing the bigger picture.

Variety has been given the first-look image for the film “Havel,” which has wrapped 30 years to the day after the start of the Velvet Revolution – a series of protests that led to the end of Communist control of Czechoslovakia and the rebirth of democracy in the country.
Viktor Dvorak stars in the biopic of Václav Havel, the Czech playwright, dissident and national leader. Anna Geislerova, who starred in Oscar nominated “Zelary,” plays his wife, Olga Havlova.
The pic follows Havel’s life from the Prague Spring in 1968 to the Velvet Revolution in 1989, when Havel became Czechoslovakia’s president. As well as covering Havel’s experiences as a dissident and his time in prison, it will also focus on his relationship with Olga.
The shoot wrapped Sunday in Prague’s Wenceslas Square, where Havel made his first public appearance as presidential candidate in 1989, and where the film ends.

MaryAnn’s quick take…
Familiar-feeling tale of a real-life plot to kill a high-ranking Nazi in 1942 Prague manages some suspense thrills but mostly misses the emotional ones. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Anthropoid sounds like it should be a sci-fi creature feature, but in fact it’s yet another let’s-kill-Nazis action drama. This is the true story of how a small band of British-special-ops-trained Czech patriots in exile parachuted back into German-occupied Prague in 1942 on a top-secret mission — code name: Anthropoid — to kill SS General Reinhard Heydrich, regional commander and third-highest ranking Nazi officer after Hitler and Himmler.
Anthropoid could use a lot more exploration of the emotional stress of plotting murderous sedition in a totalitarian state.
Alas, it’s a familiar-feeling tale even if you’ve never heard about this bit of...

The first trailer for World War II thriller Anthropoid has arrived online, starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan as two Czech operatives tasked with the assassination of an SS officer.
With the movie set to arrive later this summer, it’s a wonder why we’ve heard so little about it until now – especially with a trailer that’s this intriguing. Cashback director Sean Ellis sits at the helm of this espionage pic, whose title refers to a specific mission where two operatives set about hunting down one of Hitler’s highest-ranking officials, SS Reinhard Heydrich. While the cinematic canon includes a lot of World War II thrillers, and many that involve espionage, Anthropoid looks like it’s planning to pack quite a punch thanks to the performances of its strong acting line-up.
Speaking of the cast, Murphy and Dornan are joined by a stellar support roster that includes Toby Jones,...

It was just this week with the arrival of the Denial trailer that we commented it wouldn’t be awards season without a Holocaust drama. While Anthropoid is centered moreso around taking down Nazis and it arrives just before the standard award season, we’ll count it. Coming from director Sean Ellis (Metro Manila, Cashback), the first trailer has now arrived.
Led by Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, they star as a pair of Allied soldiers who attempt to take down an SS General. Also starring Charlotte Le Bon, Anna Geislerová, Harry Lloyd, Alena Mihulová, Marcin Dorociński, Bill Milner, Sam Keeley, Jiří Simek, Mish Boyko, Václav Neuzil, Andrej Polák and Toby Jones, check out the trailer, photos, and poster below.
Anthropoid is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. The Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich was the main architect behind the Final Solution and the leader of occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia whose reign of terror prompted Allied soldiers (Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan) to hatch a top-secret mission that would change the face of Europe forever.
Anthropoid opens on August 12, 2016.

"Home Care" is Horák's debut feature. The filmmaker's only other major credit is as 2nd Ad in Jan Sverák's "Kolya," which coincidentally is the country's only film to ever win the Academy Award after the split of Czechoslovakia. "Home Care" screened at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival where it won the Best Actress award for Alena Mihulová.
Centered on a devoted home care nurse whose existence revolves around those that rely on her, the film points out that even the strongest of people need to be cared for. This drama, which is said to have comedic undertones, beat other strong contenders such as Jan Prusinovský's "The Snake Brothers," the film that took home the Best Actor award at Karlovy Vary.

After first hearing about it in March, we now have the initial look at Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy in director Sean Ellis’s World War II thriller Anthropoid. Ellis wrote the script with Anthony Frewin and is directing the real-life story about the attempted assassination of a prominent Nazi official. The title refers to the codename for the Allied operation to take down Reinhard Heydrich, the high-ranking SS officer who helped oversee the Holocaust. Seen as the number three Nazi – behind Hitler and Himmler – he was naturally a target for assassination. The men chosen for the task were Czechoslovakian army soldiers in exile (Dornan and Murphy), recruited and trained by British forces to parachute into their homeland and target the man known as The Butcher Of Prague. Already aboard alongside the leading pair are Charlotte Le Bon and Anna Geislerová, with the cast swelling before production began to include Toby Jones,...
