One of Spain’s biggest and oldest movie events, the Valladolid Intl. Film Festival, known as the Seminci in Spain, is broadening its range of Spanish films and aims to strengthen its position as an international platform for art films.
Running Oct. 21-28 in Valladolid, the capital city of Spanish region Castilla-Leon, the Seminci’s 68th edition marks the first under new director José Luis Cienfuegos, named last April.
With an illustrious near 30-year career as a festival director, at the helm of the Seville European Film Festival (2012-2023) and prior to that at the Gijon Intl. Film Festival (1995-2011), Cienfuegos has arrived to Valladolid at a time when a new generation of Spanish film auteurs, often women, is booming, making waves at the international festivals circuit.

Not since Madonna got on her knees in the “Like a Prayer” video in 1989 has anyone been as horny for a saint as the heroine of Mamacruz, a housewife in her 70s who undergoes a sexual reawakening partly inspired by the holy images she, as part of her work as a seamstress, undresses and caresses on a regular basis. No one has Cruz’s (Kiti Mánver) touch when it comes to working with antique lace and fabric, the likes of which she has never worn herself, but mends and polishes so that holy statues in her church continue to dazzle.
I can’t say I blame Cruz! If ghosts can read reviews, I hope my great-grandmother doesn’t haunt me over my blasphemous memory of wanting to touch the statue of Jesus that paraded around our city on Easter Sunday. Covered merely by a small white sheet that concealed his privates,...

In 1975, Francisco Franco, the right-wing dictator who ruled Spain for almost four decades, died after a lengthy battle with his own mortality, leaving his designated successor, Juan Carlos I, to presumably continue his fascist policies, centered on three overriding principles or values: family, church, and state. Individual rights and liberal democracy were nowhere in Franco’s conception of Spain before or immediately after his death. Instead, the new leader threw his moral weight and political capital behind democratic reforms, returning Spain to a constitutional monarchy, resulting in a gradual liberalization of culture and the arts and the retreat of state-sponsored religion, specifically Roman Catholicism, from public life. For Cruz (Kiti Mánver), a woman in the twilight years of her life in writer-director Patricia Ortega’s poignant...

Cruz (Kiti Mánver) watches her telenovela with great interest, inching off the couch slightly, leaning into the passionate romantic embrace of the characters on screen. Her excitement ends quickly as she's startled back to reality by her husband's thunderous snores. Cruz is a deeply religious woman, a devout follower of Catholicism. Their granddaughter is staying with them in Spain while their daughter's lifelong dream of being a dancer is coming to fruition in Vienna. Along with Cruz's granddaughter comes something new to Cruz — the internet.
One fateful night, Cruz is looking up information on Vienna, but a pop-up leads her to an accidental discovery: pornography. It horrifies Cruz, who shoves the tablet under a pillow with the speed of an Olympic athlete, lights a candle and prays at her altar to try and cleanse herself of the sin she's fallen into.
Control has always been a big part of Cruz's life.

Barcelona-based sales agent Filmax has acquired international rights to Venezuelan director Patricia Ortega’s comedy “Mamacruz,” which competes in World Cinema Dramatic at the Sundance Festival, which kicks off Jan. 19.

Toplining Kiti Mánver (“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”), “Mamacruz” follows a grandma who accidentally stumbles across some pornographic images on her granddaughter’s tablet, leading her to rediscover her long-forgotten sexuality and desire.
The coming-of-old-age story, co-written by Ortega and José Ortuño, pays tribute to those women who decide to take the reins of their own destiny.

The Sundance Film festival is just a month plus away (January 19th-29th) with tickets going on sale December 13th for online packages, December 16th for in person packages, and January 12th for individual films. We are always very excited about the World Cinema Program which usually has great finds not to mention future Oscar submissions. For example the 2022 roster included five current Oscar hopefuls: Bolivia's Utama (Grand Jury Prize), Finland's Girl Picture (Audience Award), Brazil's Mars One, Australia's You Won't Be Alone, and Ukraine's Klondike and most of the other titles were also very well received. What treasures await us this year?

The rallying cries of the Italian anti-fascist song “Bella ciao” from The Professor’s (Álvaro Morte) gang of endearing city-named criminals will soon no longer be heard from the halls of the Bank of Spain. Álex Pina’s “Money Heist,” also known as “La Casa de Papel,” one of Netflix’s most-streamed Spanish-language shows, will reach its conclusion in two parts by the end of this year.
But while the series will come to an end, “it isn’t the end of the robbery at the Bank of Spain,” executive producer and director Jesús Colmenar said during the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show on Aug. 19.
Colmenar, who was joined by Morte and Úrsula Corberó, discussed the “biggest and most thrilling” season, with Colmenar noting, “We have put the final stops in there.”
One important stop came in the fourth season, when fan-favorite character Nairobi (Alba Flores) was killed off.

Netflix released a trailer for the first five episodes of the final season of ‘La Casa de Papel,’ which stream on Sept. 3.
In this batch of episodes, which the streamer is calling “La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) Part 5, Volume 1,” the gang faces one of its darkest moments after losing one of their own. The Professor (Álvaro Morte) has been captured by inspector Sierra (Najwa Nimri) and, for the first time, doesn’t have an escape plan. However, that’s not the only problem because now the army is coming.
In the trailer, which you can watch below, Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) describes the 100 hours they have spent shut in the Bank of Spain as feeling like 100 years. Also, the Professor reveals the stormwater tank has been found and Colonel Tamayo (Fernando Cayo) assembles an army to go into the Bank of Spain.

What's more, production on the final season will commence Monday in Denmark, before shooting in Spain and Portugal.

After taking 67 people hostage inside the Mint, the team plans to remain inside for 11 days to print the money as they deal with elite police forces.

Netflix’s Spanish-language smash La Casa De Papel (aka Money Heist) has set a new record for the streamer. With more than 34.3M households tuning in for Part 3, this is the largest first-week global household turnout for a non-English-language Netflix series. Over 70% finished the entire season in the initial seven days.
The third installment of the Alex Pina-created phenomenon launched on July 19. Evidenced by the massive viewing numbers, fans of the series are legion around the world — and not only in Spanish-speaking markets, but extending to such countries as France (where advertising for Part 3 has been wall-to-wall), Italy and India. In the first week, Money Heist Part 3 was the most-watched title in Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Brazil, Chile and Argentina, among others, Netflix tells Deadline.

Madrid — The third part of “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”), Netflix’s most-watched non-English language show, is entering production and has added new cast. Netflix dropped a first video on Thursday celebrating the occasion.
Produced directly by Netflix and Vancouver Media, the Madrid-based shingle of series creators Alex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the third part of “La casa de papel” was originally announced in April. Very little was known then about its plot apart from that “the professor will plan new heists, revealed in 2019,” Netflix said, and that much of the original key cast would return.
“The band is back. This time it will be more than a heist and, with new members, the stakes are raised,” Netflix announced Thursday.
Set to the music of “Bella Ciao,” the new video, however, hints more at Part 3 characters than its events, as Parts I and 2 actors, led by Alvaro Morte...

Pedro Almodóvar has begun shooting his next film which is called Pain & Glory, so we can expect it in 2019. This will be Penelope Cruz's sixth collaboration with one of the world's greatest directors. Antonio Banderas will also co-star, marking his 7th Pedro film. Other Almodóvar regulars appearing will be Kiti Mánver (6th time) and Julieta Serrano (5th time). Though Pedro pictures are usually all about the actresses occassionally he throws gorgeous men into the mix. And this looks like one of those times. In addition to Banderas in what we assume will be the lead role (?), we've got: Raúl Arévalo from I'm So Excited, Leonardo Sbaraglia (Wild Tales) and Asier Etxeandia (Ma Ma).
The movie will also be the feature debut for a young popular singer named Rosalía. She posted the following picture on her instagram...

Connected film festival attendees learned about Pedro Almodóvar before everybody else, especially if they had an understanding of new developments in Spanish cinema. Film school had shown us nothing but the very exceptional work of Luis Buñuel, most of which is really from Mexico and France. In the 1980s we Angelenos were just getting access to films by the old-school ‘traditional’ rebel Spaniards Carlos Saura and Juan Antonio Bardem.
