There are a slew of R-rated superhero films and shows in the current landscape of the genre, yet there are certain classic superheroes who can benefit from such storytelling. Batman is one such character that can do wonders with an R-rating. However, it doesn’t t make sense for any IP to change ratings in between installments, which makes what happened with the two-part animated adaptation of The Long Halloween even more frustrating.

One odd feature of The Long Halloween duology is how the first film is a PG-13 film, while its sequel was given an R-rating. In an interview with Comics Beat, Producer Butch Lukic revealed why this was the case. However, while AT&T might have been okay with the arrangement, fans were rightly mad at the lackluster handling of the rating.

The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).
With the Anti-Monitor on the loose, a whole host of heroes assemble to save the Multiverse, but it looks like that will be easier said than done when they also have Lex Luthor to contend with. Several other villains are also spotted, including The Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face.
In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!
The Saturday morning cartoon aired between 1973 and 1985 on ABC and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. That classic animation style returns here and we're hoping the movie has even...

Throughout its decade-long run, Arrowverse was mostly a mixed bag when it came to delivering quality TV. But it had its fair share of moments, with one of its biggest highlights being 2019’s Crisis on Infinite Earths adaptation, which is also seen as the last high point for the series. And with Tomorrowverse on the verge of its end, which will follow the Crisis on Infinite Earths Storyline to conclude the saga, fans have been wondering if it will take notes from the CW version.
However, to Arrowverse fans’ dismay, the animated version of the iconic comic event has nothing to do with its live-action counterpart.

Crisis on Infinite Earths is a three-part culmination of the Tomorrow-verse, which means that a lot of the characters that would appear in the trilogy would have made an appearance in previous installments of the shared universe. Not only was this a way to get fans excited about cameos and a connected universe, but it also allowed a brilliant cost-cutting strategy to take hold as a part of the production of the three films.

The Dcau has constantly pushed boundaries when it comes to storytelling in the animated medium. The popular Timmverse of the ‘90s and 2000s dealt with mature themes that were seldom spoken about in the medium which was usually aimed at children. With Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, the team seems to have gone for a radical design that took a while for studios to understand.
Based on the popular comic book arc of the same name, Crisis on Infinite Earths sees multiple universes collide and DC’s beloved heroes meeting alternate versions of themselves. The storyline is split into three parts in the Dcau, with the third and final part set to be released later this year.

There was a time when the animated features and shows were in the hands of Dcau producer and supervisor Bruce Timm, who made some of the most memorable pieces of entertainment in the animation space with characters from DC Comics.
But in his pursuit for greatness, he wasn’t alone, as one of the franchise’s projects, none other than the iconic Teen Titans, was handled by Glen Murakami.

While Timm has been revered in the industry with his breathtaking narrative and animation style, made popular with Batman: The Animated Series, Murakami made a name for himself with Teen Titans, making it one of the best superhero animated shows in history.
But the animations that Murakami managed to achieve by combining comic book art and anime art style in his production was something that even Timm couldn’t do.

With co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the franchise, it seems fair that the comic series is finally being adapted into animated movies. However, there are a lot of scenes from the original script that will never see the light of the day.

It has often been seen in today’s world that quippy humor and overused jokes are used to grab onto audiences about to leave the theater screens. With many movies relying on dad jokes and puns to bring a sense of comedy into the chaos, a balance between seriousness and comedy is a serious issue (sorry).
Well, the Dcau, or DC Animated Universe strived hard to find the perfect balance between a world full of comedy and seriousness. Talking about their recently released Dcau magnum opus, the team behind the film talked about how they managed to find that perfect center point between comedy and seriousness and how they nailed it!

One of DC’s most popular and successful animated series was Justice League: The Animated Series that aired on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2004. Based on the Justice League of America comics, the show which was a sequel to the Batman and Superman animated series, reached out to a wide audience who turned into hardcore buffs on the franchise.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of the animated series was the various interesting trivia and facts that it carried with regard to DC storylines and its tributes to actors who played cult DC characters. One of them was Mark Hamill whose portrayal as Trickster in the 1990 series The Flash, was adapted beautifully into the show.

These days Marvel has been doing a pretty poor job of making films, before 2019 the franchise was a powerhouse, constantly delivering cinematic entertainment, with smash-hit box office records; all along with narrating a captivating superhero tale. However, the franchise has faced a steady decline in its popularity because after Avengers: Endgame, only a few films have marked a lasting impact in the minds of its viewers.
Batman and Catwoman in Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One
Nevertheless, the franchise should learn from their rivals, DC as Butch Lukic, the producer of Batman: The Long Halloween shares how they all agreed to come up with the idea of adapting the storyline of The Long Halloween. The film was a massive success, featuring Jensen Ackles lending as the voice behind Bruce Wayne/ Batman in the fan-favorite animated film.

Batman: The Long Halloween has been embraced as a superb Batman tale, a solid mystery story, and a superlative effort from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It has remained in print since its arrival in 1996-97. Warner Animation tackled this in 2021, releasing it in two parts, which I liked when I reviewed them here and here.
The parts have now been sewn together into a far more satisfying single volume, upgraded to 4k Ultra HD, which incrementally enhances the overall enjoyment.
The 13-part story is set early in Batman’s career, with Loeb plumbing the Gotham underworld as established by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in Batman: Year One. Interfering in Carmine “The Roman” Falcone’s (Titus Welliver) gang operations is the arrival of the Holiday Killer. Tracking him with little effect over the course of a year are Batman (Jensen Ackles) and his grudging allies Captain James Gordon...

Chasing Catwoman across the skyline of Gotham City, Batman leaps from one building to another – perfectly framed by the full moon
Supervising Producer Butch Lukic gives Gotham City the full noir treatment in Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One as seen in four new images released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
“I wanted to give the film a timeless look, kind of like the book, where you can’t pinpoint the actual time period,” said Lukic, who cited 1940s crime films and The Godfather as further inspiration for the film’s stylish, nuanced art direction. “I really set out to make Gotham City a character onto itself. All the backgrounds were thought out to have a look or feel of classic cinematography. I even shadowed most of the backgrounds myself to get the right style of lighting needed for particular scenes, and to give the film that classic noir look.

Comic fandom has crossed so thoroughly into the mainstream, that mass media is proving elastic enough to encompass what was previously considered the obscure. Case in point, the just-released Justice Society: World War II direct-to-video film. Here is a story focused on the first comic book team that finally gets the spotlight after making cameos and guest appearances on animated and live-action television productions dating back to Smallville.
I personally love the Jsa and was thrilled they were getting a film of their own. Unfortunately, the finished product is not the Jsa we know, nor is it a particularly good piece of storytelling. Producers Butch Lukic and Jim Krieg apparently started this project as a Wonder Woman in WW II story that morphed and was appended to the parallel worlds concept.
We start on what we presume is the Dcau world as Flash (Matt Bomer) comes to aid Superman (Darren Criss) but clearly,...

It seems like a universal experience with Justice Society: World War II is to come into it excited about seeing characters like Jay Garrick and Wonder Woman in action during the war, and to walk away from it stunned at how amazing Black Canary was. This isn’t just an experience for the film’s viewers: it’s one held by the movie’s creators, too.
“[Black Canary was] such an example of when you’re writing something and the character is like, ‘Hello I am present!’ She just continued to persevere through the entire script,” says Justice Society:World War II co-writer Meghan Fitzmartin.
She wasn’t alone.
“When I saw the movie, the thing that rocked my world was Elysia [Rotaru]’s portrayal of Black Canary,” co-writer Jeremy Adams agrees.
It’s a very slight reinvention for Black Canary, and it’s one that really helps cement her as a central figure in this version of the Jsa.

If there’s one thing DC loves, it’s reboots. The comics cycle through their continuity in one form or another every decade or so, the movies…well…that’s a whole thing, too. So of course now it’s time for the DC animated movies to get a fresh start. And this time, they’re doing it with the hero who should pretty much always be the center of these things: Superman.
Since 2014, there have been 20 DC Universe Animated Original Movies, most of which existed in a shared continuity that began with Justice League: War and culminated in this year’s Justice League Dark: Apokalips War. With that story arc now complete, Superman: Man of Tomorrow will set up a new continuity for future movies. Butch Lukic is the new Supervising Producer for these DC movies, with Chris Palmer directing Man of Tomorrow.
