Just back from shooting Piranha 3Dd in Wilmington, North Carolina (the flick opens nationwide via Dimension this coming November 23), director John Gulager, who’s currently knee-deep in post-production, took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with us regarding the shoot as well what fans can expect of his sequel to the 2010 Alexandre Aja-helmed Piranha 3D. Read on!
Following twenty-five days of wet and wild production with director of photography Alexandre Lehmann, the filmmaker (who directed from a script by long-time collaborators Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton) said of his first foray into the world of 3D, “It does take longer to shoot (in that format), although the company still wants you to shoot it in the same amount of time (you would film a traditional movie), and there’s no running off and just getting shots because there is a train (of equipment) which follows you around.

I really dug what Aja did with the remake – if you want to call it that – of Piranha with Piranha 3D (Theatrical Review). I had tons of fun and so did the few people who were in the theatre with me. If you were to tell me that they were going to make a sequel that day I saw it, I would of figured it would be direct-to-video because of the attendance. Alas, Dimension is going with the flow and planning on a theatrical sequel to whet the appetite of the hungry and bloodthirsty audience that loved Aja’s film. Read beyond the break for the meaty details.

Piranha 3Dd arrives in theaters on November 23, 2011. This cast seems fitting for the film. I like Koechner and am sure he will bring some humor to the film. I wonder if there will be as much nudity in the sequel as the first film.

Really!? I guess I shouldn't be surprised Dimension Films has announced a sequel to Piranha 3D, but having seen the movie I really don't see any point. The movie wasn't as fun as I was expecting it to be. Sure, there was a lot of blood, guts and boobies, but I still wasn't impressed. I knew it was going to be a badly scripted movie, with bad acting, but I think the movie took itself too seriously. I'm kind of shocked the movie got such good reviews! Maybe I missed something.
But for those of you who did enjoy it and were looking forward to the sequel here ya go! Congratulations, it's happening.

Yesterday I saw Piranha 3D at my local AMC theater. The cost? $32 for two people. Thirty Two Dollars. For a movie. A 3D movie no less. 3D prices for a movie that looked so god awful in 3D I thought the theater had hired children to wave cardboard cutouts in front of the screen for 90 minutes. While the movie was fun and cheesy, the 3D was so Clash of the Titans bad that there were some shots where I couldn't tell what was happening. And studios and theaters are charging more for a 3D "experience"? I swear it's the biggest scam since car insurance. Whether you enjoyed Piranha 3D or not, you're gonna get more boobs, babes and killer fish with the just announced sequel. After reeling in $10 million opening weekend, and with word of mouth so positive, the film will make its money back and then some. And you...

Piranha 3D surprised audiences and critics this weekend by actually being a good movie. The gleefully entertaining blood-filled romp made a decent $10m on a easily recoupable $24m budget. Now, on the Monday after release producer Mark Canton exclaimed they “can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

The story so far: Following the release of Jaws, legendary exploitation-movie producer Roger Corman hired fledgling director Joe Dante to direct a rip-off movie about small, killer fish. The result was 1978′s gore-drenched, but tongue-in-cheek Piranha, which cost less than $1 million to make and grossed around $14 million in the U.S. alone. The sequel, 1981′s Piranha II: The Spawning, was directed by first-time film-maker James Cameron. The future Avatar and Titanic auteur was fired midway through the film’s shoot in Jamaica, and the movie was not a commercial success. But this disappointing experience did inspire Cameron to write his breakthrough movie,...
