If you've read my retrospective interviews on the series or heard me rave about it on our high school-themed episode of Corpse Club, then you know that I absolutely adore the Crowley High kids who for two years were "fighting evil with mixed results" on the TV series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil. Years after the show was prematurely canceled, the cast and crew of the cult series are reuniting for one more blood-spattered ride in the animated film Todd & The Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End, and Raven Banner has revealed the official trailer for the film ahead of its release this fall.
Press Release: Toronto, On (August 22nd, 2017) - Several well known characters and actors return in Raven Banner Releasing’s Todd & The Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End: The Animated Feature Film. This time Todd (Alex House), Jenny...

[Originally appeared in the January 2015 issue of Deadly Magazine. Catch up with Part One of the retrospective here.]
Though it was prematurely cancelled in 2012, the horror comedy TV series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil has lived on through the memories of its loyal fan base, been discovered by a new audience on home media, and will return in an animated film in the near future. Last fall, I had the great pleasure of speaking with the series' co-creators and main cast, who looked back on fighting evil... with mixed results.
In this second part of Daily Dead's retrospective on Todd & The Book of Pure Evil, Alex House (Todd Smith), Maggie Castle (Jenny Kolinsky), Bill Turnbull (Curtis Weaver), Melanie Leishman (Hannah B. Williams), Shawn Pierce (music composer), and series co-creator Craig David Wallace discuss their time on the truly unique series that showed the humor, horror, and often blood-soaked trials and tribulations of high school.

[Originally appeared in the January 2015 issue of Deadly Magazine] Think back to your worst memory of high school. If it doesn’t involve a giant bone-crushing baby, rock and roll zombies, or a Satanic guidance counselor, then you didn’t go to Crowley High, the setting for the beloved TV series Todd & The Book of Pure Evil.
Comprised of two seasons that originally aired from 2010–2012 on Canada’s Space network, Todd & The Book of Pure Evil follows Todd Smith, a heavy metal-loving high school stoner who, along with his best friend Curtis, major crush (and strongly independent) Jenny, and the brilliant Hannah, is forced to face the monsters and evil powers unleashed by The Book of Pure Evil.
The twisted tome (believed to be bound in the foreskin of Judas) can be found by the tormented, the humiliated, and the depressed—making high school its perfect home. For 26 episodes, Todd and his friends (collectively known as “the Gang”) hunt...

Back in 2011 Fearnet had the pleasure of bringing Todd and The Book of Pure Evil to the Us. But we know that not everyone had the chance to catch the show because our channel wasn’t carried by their TV provider. If you fell into that category now is your chance to catch up. The entire first season is now available via hulu. What is Todd and The Book of Pure Evil? Well, it is a supernatural comedy featuring Jason Mewes ("Mallrats," "Clerks") that tells the story of a small-town high school kid trying to save the world. The hilariously twisted series also stars Alex House, Maggie Castle, Bill Turnbull, Melanie Leishman and Chris Leavins.

Metal music, creativity, pervertedly dark humor, stoner madness, an overabundance of gore brought on by practical effects work – these are all things horror fans love. Not every horror endeavor has to be a chilling tale of paranormal adventures or some serious take on serial killers. Sometimes it’s great just to relax with nothing but pure entertainment through a medium that laughs at the notion of taking one’s self too seriously, and that’s where an epic little Canadian TV show came in called Todd & The Book Of Pure Evil.
Starring Alex House as a hormone driven high school metalhead named Todd, he stumbles upon a Necronomicon-like book that proclaims he is the “Pure Evil” one, said to bring death and destruction to the world. Fighting his fate alongside his best friend Curtis (Billy Turnbull), the two pot-smoking losers are forced to fight a new monster each episode as...

Sadly, "Evil" shall not prevail.
Canadian TV channel Space has confirmed that it won't be renewing cult hit "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil" for a third season. The news comes as quite a shock, given the show's accolades from critics and fans alike. It was recently picked up in foreign markets like Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany, where fans were heard crying out "ingen!""nei!"and "kien!" upon hearing that their new favourite show won't be back.
The show's creator, Craig David Wallace, revealed the news last night at the Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards, where, ironically, he was being honoured for his work on "Todd." In a state of disbelief, we reached out to a Space rep who confirmed that yes, it is indeed true. Nooooo!

Canadian import ‘Todd & the Book of Pure Evil’ legally reaches our shores tonight. The comedy horror series began as a short film directed by showrunner Craig David Wallace in 2003, before being picked up for a pilot and following series in 2009 by Canadian channel ‘Space’. The show follows Todd Smith, a student at Crowley High, and his ‘Scooby Gang’ consisting of his best friend Curtis, brainy scientist Hannah and the object of Todd’s affections, Jenny.
Crowley High was also founded by Satanists and is the current home of a cursed Book of Pure Evil that’s a lot cheekier and more airborne than ‘The Evil Dead’s’ Necronomicon. The Book grants wishes to the distressed and troubled students of the high school, but they each go horribly wrong, leading to murder and bloodshed, in hilarious ways. Todd’s gang do whatever they can to try and stop the book, whilst...

*This is another in-depth review of a television series from Ed Sum.
Horror-comedy has a new name in the Canadian produced television series, "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil." When it’s mixed up early Sam Raimi style—with lots of camp and cheese—and backed up talent from the likes of show creators Craig David Wallace, Charles Picco, Anthony Leo; and fellow directors like David Winning ("Friday the 13th the TV Series," "Are You Afraid of the Dark?", "Blood Ties"), there’s a masterful chemistry that’s at work.
While some episodes are formulaic in its look at high school life, the thing that keeps people coming back for more is the strong cast of characters. Todd Smith (Alex House) is not your usual pretty boy, and nor are his friends. The shift is on the freaks and geeks.
It’s up to Todd, his best pal, Curtis...

In 2003, Canada's Craig David Wallace directed a short film called Todd and the Book of Pure Evil . With co-writer Max Reid, he spun a tale of a headbanger who seeks dating advice from the devil and unleashes hell on earth to get the cheerleader he loves. Wallace is getting an opportunity to expand this short film into a television series for Canada's Space. Steve Arbuckle, who played Todd in the short, is replaced by Alex House and Frantic Films is shepherding the series. David Winning ( Stargate: Atlantis , Friday the 13th: The Series ) we're told is directing a few episodes. Shooting has begun in Winnipeg. Maggie Castle, Billy Turnbull, Melanie Leishman and Chris Leavins co-star.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: What do you think about this whole “gay face” mini-meme? – Michael
A: The Flying Monkey just heard about it and I’m already tired of it.
While studies show there is no difference in the actual physical facial characteristics of gay versus straight men, other studies suggest some gay men might hold their faces, especially in the mouth area, in such a way that makes other people more likely to identify them as gay.
And this is news why? We all know there are physical and verbal stereotypes – mannerisms and such that are associated with gayness. We also know that sometimes the stereotypes are right – some gay people do conform to them – and sometimes they’re wrong: many gay people don’t conform to them, and some straight people who do.

With a nonlinear structure and surreal atmosphere -- where the past, present and future can co-exist -- MGM and Goldwyn Films' "The Hanging Garden" is another prestigious Canadian art house production coming on the heels of "The Sweet Hereafter".
The troubled boyhood of an overweight misfit haunts his slimmer self 10 years later when he returns to his messed-up family in Nova Scotia.
The debut of writer-director Thom Fitzgerald won four Genie Awards and has appeared in numerous festivals, but the limited release's commercial prospects are negligible. Still, it's an accomplished drama that shows promise with engaging performances and a uniquely troublesome atmosphere.
All of the major characters are named for flowers and garden plants in the story that takes place mainly in the family home of Sweet William (Chris Leavins), a 25-year-old gay man who was hit and verbally abused as a child and teen by his alcoholic brute of a father, gardening taskmaster Whiskey Mac (Peter MacNeill).
The adult William's attendance at the wedding of his rambunctious sister Rosemary (Kerry Fox) sets off a round of bitter and sweet memories, including a fateful mutual crush between the obese teenage William (Troy Veinotte) and his handsome friend Fletcher (Joel Keller). A too-silent ally who over time pays the bitter price for standing by her man, William's mother Iris (Seana McKenna) is shocked when she learns of her son's infatuation and sets him up with a neighborhood woman.
Such unexpected scenes as Iris sitting alone listening to the sounds of her son's sex education make "Hanging" unpredictable. When the adult William starts to see a vision of his former self dead from suicide, the film becomes open to various speculations, which are never clearly resolved.
Rounding out the lead character's world of woe as a youngster is his half-senile grandmother Grace (Joan Orenstein), a quarrelsome aunt (Jocelyn Cunningham) and a blind old dog. Saah Polley is wickedly memorable as the teenage Rose, while Fox is raw and raunchy as the older, in some ways wilder Rose.
While McKenna is commanding as a beleaguered mother with a monster husband, MacNeill bullies everyone and dominates his scenes. Veinotte and Leavins are both excellent, playing an uncomfortably passive character and keeping one involved with a frankly depressing scenario.
All about getting through dark times and changing your life, with help from one's family, "Hanging" is bitter medicine -- and its effects linger. Somber but not without lighter moments, the picture was evocatively filmed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by transplanted New Yorker Fitzgerald and cinematographer Daniel Jobin.
