This week, we present Simon Heath, World Productions CEO and exec producer of Line of Duty, the biggest UK TV drama of the decade.
Line of Duty, Vigil and The Pembrokeshire Murders. The three most-watched dramas in the UK last year were all united by one common denominator: World Productions.
By World’s own standards, the ITV Studios-backed drama powerhouse had a phenomenal year during what was a difficult 12 months for the industry, with Covid never far from the mind and a highly-publicized skills crisis making TV production trickier than ever.
“You couldn’t really ask for more than having the biggest shows on BBC1 and ITV,” Heath tells Deadline during a rare in-person interview at his Central London offices, although...

Exclusive: World Productions and Severn Screen, the producers behind ITV/BritBox’s Luke Evans series The Pembrokeshire Murders, are coming together again to make a series on another notorious crime in Wales — the brutal murder of Lynette White in 1998.
Deadline understands that the five-part series is set up at the BBC and will be penned by author and screenwriter Helen Walsh (The Lemon Grove). The Pembrokeshire Murders and Manhunt helmer Marc Evans will direct the project.
The drama tells the true story of White, a sex worker who was stabbed 50 times in the docklands area of Cardiff, and the enormous miscarriage of justice that took place in the hunt for her killer.
The police investigation led to the arrest of five local Black and mixed-race men, three of whom were found guilty. A sustained campaign for justice finally freed the wrongfully accused men, and attention turned to the hunt for Lynette’s real killer.

“Quantico” star Tracy Ifeachor, “Star Trek: Discovery’s” James Frain (left) and “Rocks” actor Sharon D. Clarke are set to star in BBC drama “Showtrial” from “Bodyguard” producer World Productions.
The five-part series, which will air on flagship channel BBC One, is now in production. Ben Richards (“The Tunnel”) writes, while Zara Hayes (“Poms”) directs.
Ifeachor, Frain and Clarke have been cast alongside Sinéad Keenan (“Little Boy Blue”), Celine Buckens (“Bridgerton”), Kerr Logan (“Strike”) and Lolita Chakrabarti (“Vigil”).
Filmed and set around Bristol, “Showtrial” explores how prejudice, politics and the media distort the legal process. The show centers on Talitha Campbell, the estranged daughter of a wealthy property developer, who is charged with conspiring to murder fellow university student Hannah Ellis.
The trial that follows places victim and accused — and their families — in the eye of a media storm. Into that storm enters Cleo Roberts, the duty solicitor on the night of Talitha’s arrest.

Exclusive: ITV is adapting Val McDermid’s series of cold case investigations Karen Pirie from Harlots writer Emer Kenny and Bodyguard producer World Productions.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered three, two-hour drama episodes of the adaptation, which is based on McDermid’s novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of best-selling novels about a young Scottish female detective set in the Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s.
Karen is a refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman. While she is not slick or a maverick cop, her quick mouth and ingenuity make her an impressive investigator. Following her promotion to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, Karen is tasked with reopening the investigation into a murder that has been the subject of a provocative true crime podcast. When teenage barmaid Rosie Duff was stabbed to death in 1995, suspicion fell on the three drunken students who discovered her body.

Crews have roamed across Australia, New Zealand and Asia to obtain first-hand coverage of events including the White Island tragedy, the prolonged Australian drought and the unprecedented bush fires in Nsw.
Essential’s Canadian parent Kew Media will distribute the series directed by Max Murch and produced by Simon Heath in the rest of the world.

BBC One has commissioned its latest drama from the makers of Bodyguard — a six-part series about a murder trial that explodes in the national consciousness.
World Productions will make Showtrial for the British broadcaster after working with Strike and The Tunnel writer Ben Richards to create the series, in which two worlds collide in a fictional legal battle.
Talitha Campbell, the arrogant daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur, is put on trial following the disappearance of fellow student, Hannah Ellis, the hard-working daughter of a single mother.
Showtrial follows both sides of the argument from the point of arrest to the verdict, with the nation gripped by the details of the case, which touches on wealth, politics and prejudice.

Bodyguard has become the BBC’s first series to be nominated for an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in nearly 50 years.
The thriller, which aired in the U.S. via Netflix as part of its co-licensing model, where it picked it up at “script stage”, was originally produced by ITV-owned producer World Productions for the British public broadcaster.
While rival ITV has been nominated in the category as recently as 2016 for season six of Downton Abbey, and Netflix picked up noms for its remake of BBC political drama House of Cards, the BBC has to go back to 1972 when Glenda Jackson-fronted drama Elizabeth R, aired by PBS in the U.S. for its original nomination in the main drama category. Strangely, that year BBC drama The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a limited series that aired on CBS, was also nominated.
