Buenos Aires-based Bikini Films, led by Edson Sidonie, has boarded “Ofelia,” the sophomore pic of Juan Pablo Felix whose acclaimed feature debut “Karnawal” won best direction at last year’s Guadalajara fest and best Ibero-American film at the Malaga Film Festival in June.
France’s Luz Verde has also come on board as a producer.
“Ofelia” has been selected to participate in Ibermedia’s Ibero-American Project Development Course currently taking place in Madrid. The political drama, set in 2009 Argentina during the tenure of controversial president Cristina Kirchner, exposes the hypocrisies of the Argentine bourgeoisie and the ideological rift in which the country found itself.
“‘Ofelia’ tells the story of an elderly lesbian woman in Argentina who still has not been able to face her sexuality with freedom because she lives in a bourgeois, conservative and patriarchal system, dominated by the men of the family,” said Felix.

Exclusive: This year’s Hainan Island International Film Festival (December 5 – 12) will host China’s biggest retrospective of Charlie Chaplin films.
The event will host 20 screenings of Chaplin films across the island, encompassing five of his classic comedies: Modern Times, The Kid, City Lights, The Great Dictator and Monsieur Verdoux. The fest is also looking into touring the films around major Chinese cities at a later date.
Chaplin visited China in 1936 and 29 of his films were released in the country between 1919 and 1924. Despite that connection, there has yet to be a significant retrospective of his works in the country to date. Last year’s Hainan film festival hosted a screening of Chaplin’s The Gold Rush.
The deal was brokered by the UK-China Film Collab with Trinity CineAsia, a leading distributor of Chinese films in Europe, and licensed by rights holder Mk2 Films, which represents the filmmaker’s library internationally.

Popular-music-focused dramatizations have found new life, thanks to recent cinematic offerings like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, with many more currently on the industry docket. It’s a notion that Netflix might have taken into consideration with a television project it just unveiled, set to chronicle the story of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the 1990s-era Mexican-American crossover pop sensation whose rise was tragically cut short upon being murdered by her friend and agent.
The Walking Dead‘s Christian Serratos temporarily put aside the zombie apocalypse to star on the Netflix television offering, titled Selena: The Series. The show is being released in “parts” (rather than seasons), with Part 1 arriving with six 1-hour episodes. Serratos – who’s played Rosita Espinoza on the AMC series since 2014 – has major shoes to fill, not just because of the loftiness of portraying the still-beloved singer, but also because of director Gregory Nava’s 1997 Selena film, which elevated star Jennifer Lopez to A-list status.

A frank discussion of the challenges Hong Kong and Filipino filmmakers face making and selling their wares in Asia’s increasingly competitive movie marketplace kicked off three days of industry forums Monday on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Organized by the Unijapan Entertainment Forum, the Presentation of East Asian Contents daylong forum featured talks from Roger Garcia, the new executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and Nestor Jardin, the festival director of Cinemalaya, a leading independent film festival in Manila each July.
While Garcia said Hong Kong’s film industry is on the upswing from a recent downturn — fueled by co-productions with China — Jardin said Filipino cinema suffers from stiff Hollywood competition but has hope of a revival of its own through cheap digital filmmaking technology and greater regional partnerships.

Producer Arthur Sarkissian has re-upped his production pact at MGM for another year and has lined up a string of projects to produce for the studio. On the heels of Between the Covers, a spec that he set up at MGM in mid-October, Sarkissian has been set to produce Hi Dharma, an English-language remake of a Korean comedy about a group of gangsters who take refuge in a Buddhist monastery. Sarkissian will produce with Mike Macari and Roger Garcia from a script by Don McEnery and Bob Shaw. He also will produce Defiant Ones, a remake of Stanley Kramer's 1958 dramatic film starring Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. The update will be changed to a buddy action comedy in the vein of Midnight Run. Varsity Blues scribe Peter Iliff will pen the redo. Sarkissian also has set up a remake of the 1961 epic war romancer El Cid, which starred Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. Martin Campbell, whose most recent directorial outing, Beyond Borders, is in theaters, is attached to direct the remake. McEnery and Shaw are repped by Endeavor, Guy Walks Into a Bar and Barnes Morris Klein Mark Yorn & Levine. Iliff is repped by Endeavor, Industry Entertainment and attorneys Tom Hansen, Stuart Brookman and Mike Shutello. Sarkissian produced Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2.
