Update: President Joe Biden, speaking to attendees at tonight’s Los Angeles fundraiser, said that Donald Trump “is dragging us back to the past and not leading us to the future.”
“We stand with the truth and we are going to defeat him and his lies,” Biden said at the event, according to a pool report. The event was at the home of Haim Saban, but he was not there after testing positive for Covid, nor was the other main co-host, Casey Wasserman, who also tested positive.
In his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Biden presented a contrast between himself and Trump, as donors have been calling for the campaign to sharpen its attacks on the president’s likely rival.
Biden also talked of the death of Alexei Navalny, blaming it on Vladimir Putin. He called it “outrageous” that Trump has not condemned the Russian leader.

Director William Friedkin, best known for his Oscar-winning “The French Connection” and blockbuster “The Exorcist,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 87.
His death was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin’s wife Sherry Lansing.
His final film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” starring Kiefer Sutherland, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Along with Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola and Hal Ashby, Friedkin rose to A-list status in the 1970s, part of a new generation of vibrant, risk-taking filmmakers. Combining his experience in television, particularly in documentary film, with a cutting-edge style of editing, Friedkin brought a great deal of energy to the horror and police thriller genres in which he specialized.

There might be a box office surprise this weekend in Paramount’s horror movie Smile.
Yes, we’re serious.
The pic, from writer-director Parker Finn, was developed by Paramount Players, and the studio took a wait-and-see approach as to where would land — on Paramount+ or theatrical. Then Paramount held a test screening, and Smile played to great results with fans literally shouting at the screen. The teens-budgeted film is looking at a high-teens millions start this weekend, but rivals believe 20 million-plus could be a possibility from 3,600 locations. The R-rated film is hot with the 17-34 set as well as Latino-Hispanic and Black moviegoers. Previews start at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Dan Weinstein, the digital media veteran who had a significant hand in building the careers of seminal YouTube stars like Lilly Singh, Rhett & Link, and Hannah Hart, is departing Studio71 -- where he most recently served as co-founder and president -- after a 13-year tenure.
Weinstein is leaving of his own volition, and says his decision preceded the announcement last week that top execs Adam Boorstin and Matt Crowley were being crowned co-CEOs of the multi-channel network, as former CEO Reza Izad ascends to the role of chairman. All of the executive changes, including Weinstein's departure, will become effective Nov. 1.

Studio71 has some brand new leadership at the highest echelons, amid a strategic shift away from its roots as a YouTube-focused multi-channel network into a more all-encompassing digital force.
The company announced today that co-founder and CEO Reza Izad will shift to the role of chairman, with the CEO position being dually filled by top execs Adam Boorstin and Matt Crowley. Boorstin currently serves as Studio71's COO, while Crowley is ascending to the chief executive role from his former position as chief revenue officer. All of the appointments will become effective Nov. 1.
Boorstin arrived at Studio71 in 2015, and was tasked with expanding the company’s business beyond YouTube by forging deals with the likes of Amazon Prime, Roku, and PlutoTV. In recent years, Studio71 says, off-YouTube revenues have more than doubled annually. Boorstin also leads Studio71’s two-year-old podcasting division, which counts over 100 shows that generate 30 million monthly streams.

Walk-in Closets: Mantello Resurrects the Classic Queer Miasma of Fear & Loathing
In the five decades since it first arrived off-Broadway, Matt Crowley’s seminal play The Boys in the Band remains one of the few creative achievements which reflects a sensibility of being both for and by gay American men. This week Netflix released the trailer for the Ryan Murphy-branded second film adaptation of Matt Crowley’s iconic and controversial 1968 play The Boys in the Band. Crowley’s play is often seen as a landmark in mainstream gay representation though at the same time as it has developed a reputation as “dated.” This new adaptation is based on the hit 50th anniversary Broadway revival produced by Murphy and helmed by acclaimed Tony-winning director Joe Mantello (who also directs the new film), with the entire cast from the revival—all of whom are openly gay actors—reprising their roles. Here’s the official IMDb synopsis:

Every actor dreams of that breakout moment when a particular role allows the big world to see what you can do. Brit actor Dan Stevens, 31, is taking full advantage of that window of opportunity. After ten years of British stage and television, he landed the dishy romantic leading man role of Matthew Crowley in TV series "Downton Abbey." And after seeing through his initial three-season commitment, Stevens cut and run. He had a career to catch. Now he not only has two films on display at the Toronto International Film Festival, Adam Wingard's "The Guest" (September 17) and Tom McCarthy's acquisition title "The Cobbler," but another opening in theaters September 19, Scott Frank's "A Walk Among Tombstones." "It was a big decision," he admits in a phone interview. "I didn't know what was going to happen after January 2012. We hadn't finished shooting the first episode, and the end seemed a long way off.

The story of the ratings for The Americans has been a bumpy road. The espionage drama had a big debut, (what looked like) a large second-week drop-off and followed with a big gain from DVR viewers. Thankfully, the nervous part is over as FX has ordered a second season, meaning we'll get to keep seeing Matthew Rhys in a variety of disguises. Additionally, Nielsen has finished counting the viewers for the premiere and it now ranks as FX's most-watched series debut.

Others promise young stars like Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. For still others, the title alone (a 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, anyone?) may be the biggest draw. Here are the 10 that have us most eager to line up for tickets.

While U.K. viewers were able to watch the second season finale of Downton Abbey simultaneously with the Christmas holidays, those of us stateside find ourselves a few months behind. Fortunately, with the good timing of the Valentine’s holiday, the finale fits in perfectly with the “season of romance.”
As this last week’s episode foreshadowed, life at Downton Abbey has taken a darker turn with the arrest of Bates for his ex-wife’s murder and Matthew’s resolve that he can never marry after the unexpected death of his fiancé Lavinia.
The year 1919 was a bittersweet year as it brought the end of World War I; it was discovered that Matthew was not going to be spend his life as a paraplegic; we got to see the long-over due wedding of Anna and Bates; and miraculously Lord Grantham gave his blessing to Sybil and Branson on their pending nuptials.

Oh, and did I forget to mention it's Christmastime? There's also the issue of Mary's dirty little secret. You know, the one Carlisle is using to keep her engaged to him? Without giving too much away, Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) finally becomes privy to his daughter's encounter with Mr. Pamuk -- and it changes everything. So much drama! This year's lineup also features Cheryl Dunye's thriller "The Owls," in which aging lesbians try to get away with murder; and Jake Yuzna's "Open," a series of intertwined love stories featuring gay and trans-gendered partners.
Several of Panorama's documentary selections explores related themes -- such as Crayton Robery's "Making The Boys" about Matt Crowley's ground breaking gay play "The Boys in the Band;" "Cuchillo de Palo," Renate Costa's expose of persecution of homosexuals during the Paraguayan dictatorship and the German doc "Rock Hudson – Dark and Handsome Stranger" from directors Andrew Davies and Andre Schaefer.
