Crazy, Stupid, Art: Carter’s Directorial Debut Less than the Sum of its Parts
Multimedia artist Carter makes his directorial debut with Maladies, an intriguing sounding project that stars James Franco, who collaborated with Carter back in 2008 on an experimental project called Erased James Franco, which, over the course of an hour, sees the actor re-enact scenes from his own filmography as well as a reinterpretation of Julianne Moore’s performance from the Todd Haynes film, Safe (1995). If you think that sounds lofty and ambiguous, then the meta-context attempted in their latest effort feels nearly mainstream in comparison (though, to be clear, sometimes reinterpretation is a euphemism for remake). Borrowing details from the similar events in Franco’s own life as it slips unexplainably between eras and anachronisms, a certain mystique fools us into thinking there’s something of actual substance going on under the vague veneer of mental illness...

James Franco has taken on a number of indulgent projects in recent years, but at long last it seems he found one with a twisted, almost recursive concept that has more good parts than bad. The Letter, Jay Anania’s film about the personal nature of creating a work of art (in this case a play) follows an aspiring playwright Martine (Winona Ryder) whose mind is poisoned with suspicion by Tyrone (Franco), an actor in her production, that his two co-stars, her boyfriend Raymond (Josh Hamilton) and the leading lady Anita (Marin Ireland), are keeping a secret from her much like the characters she’s written for them.

Late last year, we reported that Jose Angel Santana filed a lawsuit against Nyu, claiming that he was fired for giving James Franco a low grade, despite the fact that the actor missed 12 out of 14 classes. The lawsuit also states that other professors, like Jay Anania, favored Franco in order to be hired by him to write and direct "The Letter" film. Today, we have the trailer for "Letter," which not only stars Franco, but also Winona Ryder. Lionsgate has already picked up the film for distribution, but a release date has yet to be set. It's likely that a theatrical release will be skipped in favor of an On Demand one. Check out the trailer below. Plot: Martine Jamison (Ryder) is a NY theatre director beginning rehearsals for a new play starring her boyfriend Raymond (Josh Hamilton) opposite a young beauty. They are joined by an unknown newcomer, Tyrone...

Have you ever directed a play that stars your significant other and suddenly found yourself obsessed with one of your actors until you slowly think you're losing your mind? Such is the story of The Letter (formerly The Stare), which stars Winona Ryder as the director in question and James Franco is the actor with questionable motives.
The thriller is directed by Jay Anania (Shadows and Lies), who was Franco's former teacher and an instructor at Nyu, and a new trailer is now online for the movie, likely to promote the movie's premiere at the Cincinnati Film Festival next month. Lionsgate is also set to release the movie, likely via VOD, but currently there's no release date, so enjoy the synopsis in the mean time.

"I'm taunting them," James Franco says matter-of-factly (around the fifty-second mark) in the trailer for The Letter, the latest effort from his Nyu pal Jay Anania. The quote is delivered as Tyrone, the mysterious young actor who shows up to torment Winona Ryder in a Ruby Sparks–meets–Black Swan high-camp thriller, but it could apply as easily to Franco, who is back in full General Hospital mode — crazy eyebrows, overdramatic stares, and a moment that definitely looks like an offscreen fingerbang, Don Draper style. "Performance art" or "favor to a friend": You decide! (And while you are at it, pour one out for poor Josh Hamilton, who only appears in this trailer long enough to get socked in the face.)...

It looks as if James Franco has been offered the opportunity to undertake optional work in the formerly The Stare – now called The Letter, psychological thriller directed by one of his teachers, Jay Anania, who is head of directing at the graduate film school at New York University.
It’s obvious throughout this trailer that the budget must have been quite small, though the fact that the film stars big name stars like Franco and Winona Ryder, but generally they make the movie look even cheaper.
Josh Hamilton, Marin Ireland, and Katherine Waterston co-star in the feature penned and directed by fellow prof, Anania.
Ryder stars as a playwright who starts to lose touch with reality, while Franco will play an actor who’s in the playwright’s production.
It looks like The Letter will be released On Demand. Therefore, the flick doesn’t have an official release date.

When one is involved with as many films as James Franco is, there’s bound to be a number of misfires, especially in the low-budget arena he likes to play around in. While he has Sam Raimi‘s major blockbuster Oz: The Great and Powerful coming next spring, there’s another upcoming film that’s firmly on the other side of the spectrum. Re-teaming with his Shadows & Lies director Jay Anania, we’ve got the first trailer for The Letter today, which follows Winona Ryder as a playwright who starts to go crazy thanks to her leading man, played by Franco. It looks like some sort of joke from the first frame, almost as if one of Franco’s General Hospital-esque gags. I applaud the guy for trying everything, but I wish he had just a bit of control. Check it out below, along with the poster, for the film also starring Josh Hamilton,...

A teacher on the actor's film course has filed a lawsuit claiming he was dismissed for giving Franco a D for poor attendance
A professor who was fired by New York University has filed a lawsuit claiming he was dismissed for giving celebrity student James Franco a D grade for poor attendance.
Dr José Angel Santana, who taught as an assistant arts professor on the actor's graduate film course, says that Franco – who supplements his acting career with stints as a novelist, installation artist, film director, soap star and part-time lecturer at Nyu – attended just two of his 14 lectures on a course called Directing the Actor II. Santana alleges that the university has given the star preferential treatment because of his celebrity status. James Franco’s multi-pronged academic pursuits have been well-documented over the past few years, and one of the common refrains has been awe and disbelief that the actor could manage to squeeze in all the necessary course work while also taking time to shoot movies like 127 Hours and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Well, according to one former Nyu professor, Franco’s secret was not coming to class much at all.
Jose Angel Santana is reportedly suing the university for wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment, alleging that when he gave Franco a “D” in Directing the Actor II for missing 12 out of 14 classes,...

Jose Angel Santana, who taught James Franco in "Directing the Actor" class at Nyu, has filed a lawsuit with the university claiming that he was wrongfully terminated for being Hispanic and giving Franco a low grade. According to the lawsuit, Santana had to give Franco a "D" for missing 12 out of 14 classes. When others learned of this, the professor suffered public humiliation, something he claims would have never happened to a white professor. He also mentions other professors, like Jay Anania, as someone who favored Franco in order to get something in return. Anania was hired by Franco to write and direct the film "Shadows and Lies." Nyu called the lawsuit "ridiculous," adding: "It is regrettable and disappointing to see a faculty member -- former or otherwise -- discuss any student's grade for the purpose of his or her personal publicity."...

There's high drama in higher ed, as one of James Franco's Nyu professors is suing the university saying they canned him for giving the "127 Hours" star a "D."
Jose Angel Santana, Franco's professor in his "Directing the Actor II" class, gave the thespian the low grade for skipping 12 of his 14 classes. Santana was later fired by the university. Franco was at Nyu pursing his master's in fine arts.
"The school has bent over backwards to create a Franco-friendly environment, that's for sure," Santana tells the New York Post. "The university has done everything in its power to curry favor with James Franco."
Santana adds other professors in the department attempted to get in good with Franco by giving him good grades. Santana cites the time Franco hired one of his instructors, Jay Anania, to write and direct "William Vincent." The film starred Franco and was admitted to the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.

A former professor at Nyu has filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming he was fired for giving Hollywood's most notable academic a 'D' in his class.
The New York Post reports Jose Angel Santana has filed a lawsuit against New York University in an effort to get his job back. Santana says he gave James Franco a bad grade because he missed 12 out of 14 'Directing the Actor II' classes, while the actor was pursuing his master's in fine arts.

Ever wish you could get one of your teachers fired? Well, if you're a famous actor named James Franco, you can. At least that's what one Nyu professor claims.
Jose Angel Santana gave the Golden Globe-winner a "D" in his "Directing the Actor II" class after Franco missed 12 of his 14 sessions while pursuing his masters in fine arts. (Ok, even we have to admit that's kind of a lot of absences.)
So did Franco retake the class? Uh. No.
Santana asserts that Franco publicly ridiculed him — claiming the prof had a problem with having a celebrity in class — and then had him fired.

That's what José Angel Santana is claiming in a lawsuit filed against New York University in Manhattan Supreme Court, according to the New York Post.
Santana claims he was sacked from Nyu's Tisch School of the Arts for awarding Franco a "D" in Directing the Actor II after the Oscar-nominated "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" star missed 12 of 14 classes. (A "D" sounds kind of generous in that regard, eh?) "The school has bent over backwards to create a Franco-friendly environment, that’s for sure," the former professor to the Post. "In my opinion, they’ve turned the Nyu graduate film degree into swag for James Franco’s purposes, a possession, something you can buy."

James Franco's Broadway debut will have to wait. Franco has dropped out of a planned revival of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth. Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman is still on board and so is director David Cromer. Sweet Bird of Youth revolves around an aging, hard-drinking movie actress, Alexandra Del Lago, who leaves town with an aging (35?), small-town escort/drifter, Chance Wayne. Wayne, in love with a corrupt Florida politician's daughter, wants Del Lago back in the movie game so he can have a chance in show biz as well. Elia Kazan directed Paul Newman and Geraldine Page in the original 1959 Broadway production, which earned Page a Tony nomination. Newman and Page reprised their roles in the somewhat watered-down 1962 film version directed by Richard Brooks. Page and Shirley Knight, who played Chance Wayne's love interest, were both nominated for Academy Awards as, respectively, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Jay Anania’s Shadows & Lies evokes memories of many better gangster films, but at the same time it creates its own slow brooding atmosphere with strong performances from a small but talented cast capable of delivering intimate nuances. James Franco stars as a young man set adrift in life by a brush with death, leaving him to float through life reminiscing and picking pockets. It’s a film of understated characters given legs courtesy of its actors and references, but at the same time it leans too heavily on a few devices instead of surrendering control completely to the powerful quartet of players it assembled.

A new production company, Waterstone Entertainment, enters the media fray with The Stare, a drama starring James Franco and Winona Ryder, to be directed by Jay Anania. [Deadline]
The film focuses on a playwright (Ryder), whose mind begins to unravel as she starts on a new production. Franco (who is also producing), plays an actor performing in the play. The plot sounds quite a bit like Black Swan – only blessedly free of ballet and Natalie Portman.
Waterstone, formed by producer Jeff Kalligheri and Texas real estate developer and producer Steve Bowen, has two more projects in development, both with Franco producing (and one he’s apparently directing). According to Kalligheri, Waterstone will strike deals with an independent distributor, as well as offering minimum guarantees on films and will look for financial opportunities on the films they have in their pipeline. Franco is best known for his role as Harry Osborn in the "Spider-Man" trilogy by Sam Raimi. In 2010, he bagged a number of awards through his role in "127 Hours", and was nominated for Best Actor at Academy Awards. He will next be seen in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes".

Because he doesn’t already have enough films in development with his name attached to them, James Franco has lined up another job, signing on for a drama called The Stare alongside Winona Ryder.Jay Anania, who just worked with Franco on a film called Shadows & Lies (and happens to be one of his teachers at Nyu) is directing The Stare, which finds Ryder back in Black Swan territory, albeit this time focusing on a playwright. She’ll be the writer struggling to launch her next show and who suddenly starts to find her mind playing tricks on her. She’s driven slowly crazy by visions and twisted dreams of being watched, but doesn’t know if she’s just going mad or it’s part of a devious plot against her. See what we mean about sounding like Black Swan? As for Franco, he’ll be playing one of...

James Franco and Winona Ryder have signed on for "The Stare," a drama to be directed by Jay Anania that sounds very similar to Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," which Ryder also starred in. The film will begin shooting on May 6th in New York. "The Stare" revolves around a playwright (Ryder) who finds her mind beginning to warp as she struggles to launch her next production. She's plagued by dreams and visions of being watched, but can't decide if she's at the center of a manipulative plot or simply losing her grip on reality. Franco plays one of the performers in the playwright's production. Franco has previously worked with Anania last year in "Shadows and Lies," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

It's been a couple months since it seemed like we couldn't go two days without an announcement of a new James Franco project. And with the reception of his Oscar hosting gig, Your Highness and the Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer, it might not be a stretch to say that the guy's heat has cooled just a bit. Even so, he's still one of the most ambitious guys working right now, and he seems to be consistently working toward a balance between mainstream and more personal work. So he's still working away, and is now set to co-star with Winona Ryder in the psychological thriller The Stare, which starts shooting next month. Yep, it looks like this James Franco film is actually happening, and will be in the can before he starts working with Sam Raimi on Oz the Great and Powerful. Deadline [1] reports a May 6 start for the film,...

Winona Ryder is going crazy. Having James Franco around probably doesn't help, either.
Deadline reports that, Franco and Ryder have signed on to star in "The Stare," a new film about a playwright (Ryder) who begins to hallucinate and become paranoid as she struggles to get her newest production off the ground. Franco will play one of the actors in her production, according to Deadline; he is a student of director Jay Anania, who heads the acting program at Nyu, one of many universities that Franco attends.
It's yet another project for Franco; the Oscar host has a large number of films and productions scheduled for the rest of 2011. He'll star with Mila Kunis in the new Disney "Wizard of Oz" prequel is making his major directorial debut with the serial killer thriller "The Night Stalker," and plans to hit the Broadway stage this fall with Nicole Kidman in "Sweet Birth of Youth.

James Franco and Winona Ryder are set to star in The Stare being directed by Jay Anania. The film is the first project funded by Waterstone Entertainment, a new producing/financing company formed by producer Jeff Kalligheri and Texas real estate developer and producer Steve Bowen.
Waterstone will generate projects it develops and has several other projects in the works, including two being produced by Franco (one he'll direct) and his Rabbit Bandini partner Vince Jolivette. According to Kalligheri,"Waterstone's core business will be to build a distribution business through a partnership it will strike with an independent distributor." Waterstone will put up minimum guarantees on films, and will also be looking for structured finance opportunities on films that are in the works. Kalligheri will be meeting with potential strategic partner distributors at Cannes, with Waterstone repped by Gersh's head of Packaging and Finance, Jay Cohen.

Waterstone Entertainment is a brand spanking new production company that has been put together by producer Jeff Kalligheri (Lake Placid) and a Texas real estate developer named Steve Bowen. I know the questions you’re asking, and I’ve got the answers. Firstly, no, the new company’s logo doesn’t include Texas longhorns anywhere in its design. And secondly, yes, they are launching their brand by making a movie starring James Franco. The Stare is set to be directed by Jay Anania (who previously worked with Franco in Shadows & Lies) and to star Franco and Winona Ryder. Perhaps piggybacking on the momentum of Ryder’s role in Black Swan, The Stare will be about a playwright whose mind begins to slip off into crazyland while she’s working on her next project. Over the course of the film things get so bad that she loses track of whether she is just having paranoid delusions, or...

Millennium Entertainment will release the 2010 independent film noir-ish drama Shadows and Lies, starring James Franco (127 Hours), on Blu-ray and DVD on June 7.
Drifter James Franco makes his way to New York in Shadows and Lies.
Originally titled William Vincent, the movie’s story turns on an eccentric drifter who just happens to be named William Vincent (Franco). He returns to New York after being away for years and comes to the rescue of a woman he barely knows, Ann Julianne Nicholson (Flannel Pajamas). She’s apparently in trouble with a young gangster (Josh Lucas, Life as We Know It) who has previously hired William to work for him doing various nefarious deeds and chores.
Written and directed by Jay Anania, Shadows and Lies played a few festivals in 2010, including the Tribeca Film Festival, and was described by Variety as a “quasi-experimental/existential drama.”

The Festival will kick off with the world premiere of DreamWorks' 3D "Shrek Forever After."

The Oscar-winning director ("Taxi to the Dark Side") will screen his new untitled doc on the former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 due to a sex scandal, as a work-in-progress. The film will screen as one of three special events that festival organizers announced Wednesday (Mar. 10).
The Special Events section also includes another work-in-progress screening of "The Western Front." This documentary follows its writer/director and Marine, Zachary Iscol, who returns to his battle site in Iraq's Al Anbar province.
