Why ‘Mr. Robot’ Rewards a Re-Watch and What It Says About Modern Culture

23 June 2016 1:43 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

I’ve spent part of the summer re-watching the first season of “Mr. Robot,” an activity I highly recommend. Audacious and inspiring in the first go-round, the second time through, it’s a richer and more affecting experience. The amount of planning that went into the debut season, which is on Amazon Prime, is even more impressive on repeat viewing, but “Mr. Robot” is never a soulless puzzle-box of a show — far from it.

Mr. Robot” is the first TV drama to seriously and systematically explore the pitfalls of our interconnected age, and yet it’s not just about the omnipotence of the Internet and the rise of of the surveillance state. Many plot turns involve those elements, but creator Sam Esmail uses them to complicate and amplify the dilemmas of the characters, who are frequently mesmerizing in their charismatic or eccentric individuality.

Emmy Contender Christian Slater Spills ‘Mr. Robot’ Secrets (Video)

A version of this story on Christian Slater first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s Comedy/Drama/Actors Emmy Issue. Something about the pilot script of “Mr. Robot” made Christian Slater pause. His character, the leader of an anarchist hacker collective and the person for whom the show was named, was a great role to play, but there was something else going on that wasn’t in the script — so Slater sat down with the show’s creator, Sam Esmail, and asked him point blank: “What’s the deal with the character?” “He asked me if I really wanted to know, »

How ‘Mr. Robot’ Achieved Its Splintered Psychology (Emmy Watch)

22 June 2016 2:18 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Mr. Robot,” the psychological thriller created by Sam Esmail, captures the social anxiety disorder of vigilante hacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) in a way that makes him both scary and empathetic.

“It’s channeling something going on in the world… it’s like ‘Catcher in the Rye,'” said Philip Harrison, who edited three episodes including the finale.

Alderson is recruited by mysterious fsociety founder, Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) to help bring down corporate America, including the company he’s paid to protect as cybersecurity engineer.

“Sam has slowed down the pace so we can trust the story,” continued Harrison (who previously cut the more conventional “Glee”). “And that’s been a real adjustment for me. It definitely puts you in the brain space as Elliot. I have to trust that I have the skills to construct it as an overall episode. Looking at it again through Sam’s eyes, »

Show creator Sam Esmail, who is set to direct all episodes of Season 2, had previously spoken with Variety about his methods of directing the series.

“I am so very specific in how I want to shoot the show and the visual grammar of how I want to tell the story,” Esmail said. “It’s nothing against our directors in the first season, because they were all great to work with. For me, it feels like it would be easier to manage day to day. I’m on the set every day anyway, and I just think it would make the whole show be more efficient.”

Rami Malek reprises his role as the young cyber-security engineer Elliot Anderson, who in the new episodes will have to deal with his own insanity after pulling the trigger on the hack and waking up in an SUV three days into the meltdown, with no recollection of the event.
