Superb acting performances (Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Juliette Binoche and Willem Dafoe), rightly Oscar-nominated and rewarded, which punctuate three unequal acts.
The first act is full of promise.
And the second one is a bit overlong.
Because it is only in the falling action of the third act that we eventually reach the climax, with the cave scene, and that we finally, truly, find the epic dimension that we expected.
Despite its flaws, 'The English Patient' is indeed a major piece of cinema, which deserves its praise and numerous accolades around the world. But it partially lacks the epic breath that characterizes films like 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
