In the Netflix biopic “The Dirt,” Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live” fame portrays A&R exec Tom Zutaut, the man who signed Motley Crue to Elektra and Guns N’ Roses to Geffen, while veteran character actor David Costabile is manager Doc McGhee. They follow in a long and illustrious line of label executives portrayed on screen, ranging from critical and box-office hits like “Ray” and “La Bamba” to lesser-seen music pics like “Cbgb” and “The Runaways.” Here’s our list of 10 of the most memorable:

Beyoncé‘s surprise appearance to present former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick with Sports Illustrated’s Muhammad Ali Legacy Award definitely didn’t go unnoticed — in fact, Twitter was strongly divided in their reactions.
Some threatened to cancel their subscriptions to the magazine for giving an award to Kaepernick, who made headlines in 2016 when he started kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality toward people of color. More players joined him, sparking a movement lasting into the 2017 season.
However, many were thrilled to see the 30-year-old athlete get recognition — and even more excited that Beyoncé was on hand to do the honors.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to not take the field for the national anthem during their Sunday game, a single player struck out on his own – and quickly became one of the names at the center of the controversy surrounding the #TakeAKnee movement that’s sweeping the NFL.
Alejandro Villanueva – starting left tackle for the Steelers – stood alone outside the tunnel entrance to Soldier Field in Chicago during the national anthem on Sunday, with his hand over his heart.
The rest of the Pennsylvania-based team remained further back in the tunnel, out of view – a decision head coach Mike Tomlin announced ahead of the game.

2016-10-26T08:54:46-07:00Will 'Notorious' Be the First Cancellation of the Fall?
We're just a few weeks into the new fall TV season, but that's traditionally the time when networks start to prune away the new shows that aren't working. So far, no new series have been cancelled, but the status of ABC's Notorious looks precarious after a move by the network this week.
At a time when the most successful new series are getting orders for more episodes from their happy networks, Notorious got the news that ABC wants fewer episodes of the series than originally planned. The network's original order had been for 13 episodes, but ABC announced this week that it wants just 10 episodes instead.
That doesn't equal cancellation - the network says it plans to air all 10 episodes - but it virtually guarantees that Notorious won't be back for a second season.

ABC has cut the Notorious TV show's production order from 13 episodes to 10. Deadline reports this is not an "outright cancellation," since the Alphabet Network plans to air all ten episodes. Maybe that seems like a good sign to hopeful fans, but it is not. Trimming the production order is the classic first step, in the peter-out approach to cancelling TV shows.Written by Josh Berman and Allie Hagan, Notorious is based on the lives of cable news producer Wendy Walker and defense attorney Mark Geragos. Notorious is not long for this world.
That much has been abundantly clear if you have been keeping track of the ratings for the show throughout the first few weeks of the 2016-2017 season.
The show is averaging just 4.4 million viewers and a 1.0 among adults 18-49.
It was revealed today that ABC made the decision to trim the episode order to 10 episodes.
That's far from good news for the show and it's clear ABC is ready to say goodbye to it.
Scandal is waiting in the wings for a January return.
The veteran hit was placed on hiatus due to series star, Kerry Washington's second pregnancy.

Chances are, Notorious would never have made the fall schedule if Scandal was coming back in the fall.

The fall 2016 TV season may have its first victim. ABC has trimmed the 13-episode first season of its new drama “Notorious” down to 10 episodes. H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel “The War of the Worlds” has been a source of inspiration for many in Hollywood. The sci-fi book has been adapted multiple times on radio, film and television, and is now returning to the small screen once again.
Per Deadline, “Teen Wolf” creator Jeff Davis and writer Andrew Cochran, along with The Firm’s Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry, will adapt “War of the Worlds” as a TV series for MTV. While no additional details were revealed, the show is a passion project for Barry whose grandfather, Gene Barry, was the star of the 1953 film adaptation.

CSI: NY alumna Melina Kanakaredes has booked a recurring role on ABC’s new drama series Notorious. There is just not a lot of good to say about either Notorious or Conviction, except that the two new ABC shows serve as a thankful reminder of just how good Shonda Rhimes is at what she does. Otherwise, as I say in my video review above, the former starring Piper Perabo and Daniel Sunjata is at best coy where it could be curious, and the Hayley Atwell-led latter is cliché-addled where, well, it could show some conviction. Debuting on September 22 and October 3…...

Not sure what you'll do without some steamy Olivia Pope romance in your life now that Scandal isn't returning until 2017? Don't worry—the Thursdays at 9 p.m. slow on ABC will remain as hot as ever with new drama Notorious. Stars Piper Perabo and Daniel Sunjata both agree: "It's sexy!" You could probably have gathered that just by looking at their attractive faces, but it's good to have some reassurance. Another thing? The duo would like you to know that there are two love scenes in the pilot alone. Notorious follows a successful news producer and a high-powered criminal attorney whose close relationship gives each of them a leg up in their respective...

You couldn’t script some of the things Wendy Walker experienced as a live news producer at CNN. But now, the new ABC drama “Notorious” aims to do just that.
The series, which launches Thursday night, stars Piper Perabo as a TV news producer who develops a friendship and alliance with a superstar defense attorney (Daniel Sunjata). The show is inspired by Walker’s lengthy CNN career and her pal, real-life defense attorney Mark Geragos.

Walker admits she was taken aback at first of how her “Notorious” character handled things (like, say, having sex in her office right before the live telecast). But she soon adjusted to the world of dramatized television.
The veteran news producer spent 32 years at CNN (including 18 of those as executive producer of “Larry King Live”), focusing on breaking news and other live coverage.

As the television world exists now, one of the main pushes we see from every network is an effort to sub-brand itself as having a “kind of show.” That’s a slightly convoluted way of saying that the networks think fans of one of their shows look for a similar “feel” from the next show. If a new show were thrown at you, they want you to be able to guess who is going to air it.
With that in mind, there’s an extent to which it’s hard to blame ABC for Notorious. It had to seem like a good Shondaland fit, and it looks decent on paper. You do you ABC.
If you throw in Josh Berman (Bones, Drop Dead Diva, The Blacklist) as creator, so much the better.
The trouble is that the world of laughable melodrama, and/or purposeful guilty pleasures that are overwrought with contrivance as a writing style,...

We can all count our lucky stars, because Piper Perabo is back and hotter than ever. Her new ABC show, on the other hand, may not be up to the level we think she deserves. The drama that looks behind the scenes at a hot cable news program suffers from generalizations and likability, but has plenty of potential to pick up throughout the season. Find out what we thought about Notorious below.

Minnie Driver yelling, “Oy! Oy!” at people she disapproves of is, quite simply, a thing of beauty. But more than that, it’s an act we need to support each and every opportunity we get. Sheer joy is experienced by all within earshot when she tosses her English colloquialism like a grenade at unsuspecting offenders, and simple pleasures like this are in such short supply how dare you, I or anyone deprive the world of even one?
It’s with this in mind that I throw my full endorsement behind “Speechless,” Driver’s new ABC comedy wedged between “The Goldbergs,” “Modern Family” and “Black-ish” as the missing piece of the network’s award-worthy (and award-winning) family night lineup. Yes, there are a few pacing issues in the 22-minute pilot, and recommending a series based on one episode of television is a risky gamble critics are asked to make far too often.

Whether you believe we’re living in a time of “peak TV,” in which content overload will supposedly destroy the industry, or whether you think there can never be too much programming, one thing is for sure: If you want to sell a show to an audience, you’d better make damn sure you catch their attention. Using that logic, ABC’s new drama “Notorious” can perhaps be forgiven for trying to hit every dramatic trope possible in a 40-odd minute span. There’s the high-pressure TV newsroom and the successful producer Julia George (Piper Perabo) who is tasked with getting all the big.

According to movies and TV, at least, sex and journalism go hand in hand. It’s a recognizable stereotype—pop culture frequents the archetypical hard-hitting reporter who boinks their way to one big scoop after another—but it goes completely against the basic ethical principles to which real life journalists must hold themselves. Sure, a dedicated journo often needs to be pushy to get a tough source to crack, but it’s high crime to sleep one’s way through the red tape, even if it helps bring truths to the public.
ABC’s Notorious builds its entire plot on illicit relationships between the media and their subjects. There isn’t a single character in this show that takes the adage “don’t sleep where you work” to heart, but that’s actually what makes the show great.

Piper Perabo revealed that she took on her most recent role as cable news producer Julia George in the upcoming ABC series Notorious because of a "gut, emotional reaction."
Inspired by the true-life stories of longtime CNN news producer Wendy Walker and criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos who both serve as executive producers on the project, Perabo says she studied Walker's professional life in preparation of the part.

A version of this story about “Notorious” first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s Fall TV Issue. ABC is making a big bet on its new fall drama “Notorious,” breaking up its reliable Thursday night lineup to schedule the show between the Shondaland heavy-hitters “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away With Murder.” Based on the real-life relationship between “Larry King Live” producer Wendy Walker and civil defense attorney Mark Geragos, the drama follows the ethically questionable partnership between a seasoned cable news producer (Piper Perabo of “Covert Affairs”) and a high-profile lawyer (“Graceland” alum Daniel Sunjata) who work.

Annie Walker is back, y'all!
Okay, no, not really, but we can dream, right? Instead, Piper Perabo is stepping into her newest role on Notorious as big-shot television news producer, Julia George, as she and her hidden lawyer partner Jake use the media to twist the narrative they want to tell, and build the ratings her show thrives on.
In a way, Julia is embracing her inner Annie Walker and using common sense and intuition to keep twists interesting on her show as she oversees a, for lack of a better word, loose and fun-loving news anchor.
Her personal life takes a hit in the premiere which will leave her focused more on the bigger mystery that threatens to take over Jake's life, and in turn, Julia's.
Notorious Season 1 Episode 1 premieres Thursday, September 22 at 9/8c on ABC!
