The series debuts in late September. Marigaby is a medical student by day—and by night, she saves lives with her family in Mexico City's high-stakes biz of private ambulances. As pressure from both worlds threatens to drag her down, Marigaby will do whatever it takes to stay afloat. Inspired by the award-winning documentary film of the same name, Midnight Family follows Marigaby Tamayo, an ambitious and gifted medical student by day, who spends her nights saving lives throughout a sprawling, contrasted and fascinating Mexico City aboard her family’s privately owned ambulance. A raw and lucid observational documentary about people whose life’s work is making space for death, Luke Lorentzen’s “A Still Small Voice” watches — sometimes from a distance, and sometimes at a bracing closeness — a young Jewish chaplain-in-training named Margaret “Mati” Engel as she offers spiritual care to the sick and dying at New York City’s Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Engel’s role might seem inherently religious on paper, but she struggles to embrace a God cruel enough to allow for the Holocaust, and seldom leads a session with her faith. Instead, Engel tends to offer comfort through uncertainty. “I have no understanding of what your body is going through right now,” she tells a patient during his final hours in the film’s opening scene, “but I’m doing my best, alright?” Her job isn’t to soften the enormity of these situations, but rather to help create...

"Deeply moving and unforgettable." Abramorama has released the official trailer for a documentary titled A Still Small Voice, from filmmaker Luke Lorentzen, who last made the acclaimed Midnight Family. This initially premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Best Director prize at the end of the fest. An aspiring hospital chaplain named Margaret (aka Mati) begins a yearlong residency in spiritual care, only to discover that to successfully tend to her patients, she must look deep within herself. Described in reviews as "one of the most profound and rewarding experiences any film offers this year." Through Mati's experiences with her patients, her struggle with professional burnout, and her own spiritual questioning, we gain new perspectives on how meaningful connection can be and how painful its absence is. As Mati and her patients take stock of their lives and experiences, space opens up to reflect on our own.

One of the most riveting, harrowing documentaries of the year finally has a home. After premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it picked up the Directing Award in its U.S. Documentary section, Luke Lorentzen’s Midnight Family follow-up A Still Small Voice will now arrive in theaters on November 10 from Abramorama. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Director Luke Lorentzen’s A Still Small Voice follows Mati, a chaplain completing a year-long hospital residency, as she learns to provide spiritual care to people confronting profound life changes. Through Mati’s experiences with her patients, her struggle with professional burnout, and her own spiritual questioning, we gain new perspectives on how meaningful connection can be and how painful its absence is.”
Dan Mecca said in his Sundance review, “At times shockingly personal, the documentary A Still Small Voice will sneak up on most viewers.

In recommending Luke Lorentzen’s “A Still Small Voice” as one of the best films of Sundance 2023, I wrote, “When’s the last time a documentary made you cry? If you’re really a cinephile, you will have an answer to that question.” Well, if you watch “A Still Small Voice” when it’s released November 10 at Dctv Firehouse in New York City, at LA’s Laemmle Royal on November 17, or in the markets to follow, it will certainly be the next doc to elicit tears. Check out the first trailer below.
Serving as the kind of cinematic catharsis that we all need after enduring the past three-plus years of the Covid-19 era, “A Still Small Voice” tackles grief as its subject head-on. It follows Mati, a chaplain-in-training at New York City’s Mt. Sinai hospital, over the course of a year as she counsels patients and their bereft family members facing terminal illness.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.
Director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan and Leigh Whannell and have been with the franchise the entire way.
With nearly twenty years of franchise lore, history, and experience with Jigsaw and his gnarly traps under their belts, few know Saw quite like Burg and Koules.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the tenured producers about Saw X and how much input they have on John Kramer’s lethal traps.

We ended last week with the first-ever clip from Lionsgate’s forthcoming Saw X, which gave us our first extended look at one of Jigsaw’s new devices – the eye trap!
The surprise with this contraption is that the game is actually connected to the character’s fingers, snapping them back with each turn of a dial. With the clip came a brand new image that gives a nice and clear look at Jigsaw’s menacing game, which appears to have already snapped three of the “victim’s” fingers.
“John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back for the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s final games.”
“Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable.

“I’d like to play a game. Perhaps one that addresses those ‘sticky’ fingers of yours,” Jigsaw exclaims in the very first clip from Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
In the clip, a man wakes up strapped to a chair. There’s a device clamped around his eyes and some sort of mechanics attached to all of his fingers. John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), identifies this man as a hospital custodian and offers him 60 seconds to complete this “game” or he’ll lose his eyesight – and maybe his life. When he turns the dial, a finger is cranked back, breaking it instantly. What happens to his eyes when he fails?!

A sequel to the original Saw movie, new franchise installment Saw X is headed to theaters on September 29, and a Very interesting new poster has arrived this morning.
Rather than showcasing a bloody saw or a severed body part, this latest Saw X poster promises that the film “cuts through time,” and the art calls back to previous Saw installments.
The Mayan calendar-inspired art is Loaded with references to the franchise’s past, suggesting that the new movie aims to be a truly satisfying full circle moment for the saga.
What we already know about Saw X is that it’s set between the events of Saw and Saw II, with both Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith returning to play Jigsaw and Amanda Young.
But what exactly does Lionsgate mean when they say the movie “cuts through time”? The franchise has been known to play around with its own timeline in the past,...

Coming to theaters on September 29, tenth franchise installment Saw X celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise with a direct sequel to the original classic. Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw, who is still very much alive at this stage on the timeline, and director Kevin Greutert promises in a new chat with Empire that he takes center stage this time around.
“Kramer is the centre of the story,” Kevin Greutert tells Empire, who goes on to explain that Saw X will feature John Kramer aka Jigsaw “more than in any other Saw.”
Greutert elaborates, “[Saw X] is an emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer, and less a slaughterhouse that you experience from the point of view of the victims.” He also notes during his chat with Empire, “Obviously there will be people that can’t handle it, but I think it has a good chance of...

The Saw franchise returns to the big screen in less than one month with brand new movie Saw X, the events of which take place between the original Saw movie and its first sequel.
Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith both return for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
The film has been officially rated “R” by the MPA this week for…
“Sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use.”
It’s interesting to note that the MPA listing for Saw X lists Jigsaw 2 as an alternate title for the film. Given the new movie is very much a Jigsaw-centric tale, that seems fitting.
The cast for Saw X also includes Renata Vaca (“Midnight Family”), Paulette Hernandez (“Crown of Tears”), Joshua Okamoto (“Control-z”), Octavio Hinojosa (Come Play With Me), Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman) and Michael Beach (Dahmer).

The official trailer for Saw X debuted over the weekend, officially confirming that Shawnee Smith will be back as franchise villain Amanda Young in the upcoming movie.
This morning, Lionsgate has released another brand new sneak peek at Saw X, giving us a fresh look at Amanda’s return. How is Amanda Young still alive, you ask? Well, the upcoming Saw X is a direct sequel to the original Saw, meaning it takes place before the events of Saw II. It wasn’t until Saw III, you may recall, that Amanda and Jigsaw were both killed off.
Smith’s Amanda started out as a survivor of one of Jigsaw’s early traps, ultimately becoming an accomplice to the torturous madman – and as a result, a horror icon in her own right.

In early summer, the still-slim Oscar conversation around documentary contenders got an unexpected bump: from an Emmy contender.
When the team behind AppleTV+’s “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” realized that the field of Oscar contenders was thinner than usual, the Davis Guggenheim-directed doc entered the fray. Right now, the film about the hugely popular TV and film star fighting off the vicissitudes of Parkinson’s and reflecting on his past looks good not only for an Emmy nomination, but Oscar rules make it possible to double dip and also pick up an Oscar nod.
But it doesn’t work the other way. Only if a movie does not land an Oscar nomination can it then submit for the Emmy race, as Brett Morgen’s “Jane” did in 2017. But given the weak Oscar competition this year, “Still,” with superb reviews for its innovative filmmaking — which elevates it beyond...

Jackass Forever (Jeff Tremaine)
Jackass has been in our lives for more than two decades. Since October 2000, when the original show premiered on MTV, Johnny Knoxville and his gaggle of goofballs have appealed to lowest-common-denominator comedic impulses. They’ve slammed their testicles into things and had them slammed into by other things. They’ve gleefully dove into danger and gotten legitimately hurt. They’ve aggravated and disturbed an entire generation of people who got Reagan and Clinton elected. But then, for another generation, they brought laughter and some earnest sense of camaraderie. Since the halcyon days of the show (which Knoxville quickly ended himself after the ire of a boomer nation called for censorship), Jackass has endured in cinematic form. The first...

The “Babylon” breakout star and “Euphoria” heartthrob are set to star in Daniel Minahan’s adaptation of “On Swift Horses.” Calva teased to Variety that he has some “pretty hot scenes” with Elordi.
“It was so cool to work with him. He’s obsessed with photography, he’s obsessed with old plays,” Calva said of his co-star Elordi. “He loves Tennessee Williams, he loves Chekhov. He’s not the guy you maybe think he is. He’s such a cool actor. He’s just amazing. I feel very proud.”

Both Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith are back for this year’s Saw 10, currently scheduled for release on October 27, 2023, and we’ve learned that filming has now wrapped!
Franchise stalwart Kevin Greutert, who directed the highly regarded Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, and edited Saw I through V and Jigsaw, is directing the project. Greutert took to Twitter today to announce that filming has wrapped on what he lovingly calls Saw X, with a note that he hopes this title sticks.
Greutert stated, “I hope we can use the title ‘Saw X’ because this chapter really gets back to the roots of what makes Saw so special to me and everyone else who loves John Kramer’s saga.”
While plot details remain scarce at this time, the director’s tease of Kramer’s return in a “blood-spitting beast of a story” is intriguing. Perhaps the bigger question...

And while Lorentzen’s main subject, Mati Engel, certainly experiences […]

The Venice premiere of Alfonso Cuarón’s 2018 drama “Roma” made an overnight star of Yalitza Aparicio, whose memorable performance as family nanny Cleo kicked off a three-month whirlwind that culminated with her becoming the first Indigenous Mexican to receive an Oscar nomination for best actress.

Four years on, little has been seen of her. This week, however, Aparicio returns to the screen via a decidedly more low-key premiere, playing a supporting role in Luis Mandoki’s modest horror film “Presencias,” which TelevisaUnivision-owned ViX+ is screening for buyers in Toronto.
