Genndy Tartakovsky has been a revolutionary voice in the world of animation, creating some of the most celebrated cartoon shoes on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Popular shows of the 2000s including Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan, and recent entries like Primal, and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal were his creations.
Fang and Spear in Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal
His ongoing show Primal has been a big hit on Adult Swim. The visionary creator/ director drew a lot of inspiration from some of the cinematic greats like Star Wars and Sergio Leone films. Interestingly, Tartakovsky based the behavior and mechanics of the dinosaur Fang in his show on how Max Fleischer’s Superman carried himself in the 40s animated show.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

I thought the first Surf’s Up movie was great! It was a great story that provided some fun entertainment. The WWE has taken over the Sony Pictures Animation franchise and they’ve produced a sequel called Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania. The film features the voices of WWE superstars John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, Diva Paige, and Mr. McMahon.
I doubt the sequel will be as good as the first film, but I liked the first film so much that I’ve gotta give it a chance! The movie was directed by Henry Yu, who is the protégé of Genndy Tartakovsky. He was a story artist on Sym-Bionic Titan and both of the Hotel Transylvania films.

For every cult-favorite – and cancelled – TV series, there will always be a few fans who wish the show never caught the dreaded axe. For instance, Firefly’s cancellation only made the show more popular. For cartoon lovers, we have sorely missed shows like Young Justice, Sym-Bionic Titan and, who could forget, the 2011 ThunderCats reboot.
After a phenomenal showing in its would-be final thirteen episodes, the ThunderCats reboot went off the air in 2012. At the time, there was no official cancellation announcement. Fans lobbied for its return – as did the voice cast. However, sadly, the ThunderCats were never to yell “Ho!” again on Cartoon Network.
Well, for nostalgic fans, here’s a bit of good news. If you didn’t pick up any of the ThunderCats mini releases (Warner used to pump out quarter season DVD releases for some of its shows, like Young Justice and ThunderCats, to the chagrin of...

Set to air in the Us at the end of the month, and in the UK next month, the series will feature a very healthy nineteen brand new shorts, simultaneously contemporary whilst paying homage to the art direction and storytelling of Walt Disney and his team from the 1920s and ’30s.
With the slapstick feel of classic Mickey Mouse, the series of cartoon shorts presents Mickey in a broad range of humorous situations that showcase his pluck and rascality, along with his long-beloved charm and good heartedness. Each cartoon short finds Mickey in a different contemporary setting including Santa Monica, New York, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Venice and the Alps, facing a silly situation, a quick complication and...

The Mouse House rarely puts its iconic animal cartoon character in the spotlight these days. But after scoring an Oscar with Paperman, a new series of 19 retro-style shorts is immediately created to remind everyone why Mickey Mouse is so important in the first place. Croissant de Triomphe is one of 19 new shorts that will begin airing on June 28th, 2013 on the Disney Channel, Disney.com and other Disney-branded platforms. The shorts arrive from Emmy Award-winning Paul Rudish (Dexter’s Laboratory, Sym-Bionic Titan, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) and feature classic Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto and more....

I hate how Cartoon Network breaks up their seasons on DVD. It just seems like the most convoluted and absurd way to please fans. Of course, not being naïve, I would never imagine that Cartoon Network would actually want to please their fanbase (especially when they cancel a brilliant show like Sym-bionic Titan), but I digress. Constant double and triple-dips into a season to produce a cohesive DVD set is probably the most annoying thing a network can do to fans looking to complete a series.
Such is the case with The Amazing World of Gumball. The latest DVD release of The Mystery is the second of what apparently encapsulates the entire first season, plus a handful of additional episodes. It doesn’t make much sense, considering the first season was apparently 18 episodes, but these two DVDs combined equal 24. It doesn’t quite compute.

Some interesting and potentially good news for fans of Russian animation director Genndy Tartakovsky, of "Dexter's Lab", "Samurai Jack" and "Sym-Bionic Titan" fame. Well, we guess they had to call it something. We already reported that Sony is moving full-steam ahead on a sequel to their 2009 adaptation of Judi and Ron Barrett's children's book "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," but would not utilize the storyline from the book's sequel, "Pickles to Pittsburgh." Hot shit "Horrible Bosses" writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were hired to write the script and while original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have moved on to live action (they directed next month's terrifically cartoony "21 Jump Street"), Sony substituted them with two story artists from the first film – Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. What it was going to be called remained a mystery…until now. Thanks to a promo image at Coming Soon, everyone can now say hello to "Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers." Evocative.

Given animator and "Samurai Jack" and "Sym-Bionic Titan" creator Genndy Tartakovsky's famed East-meets-West approach to conveying cartoon action, it's really no wonder that Screen Gems tapped the talent to open the live action adaptation of Hyung Min-woo's "Priest" manhwa with an animated prologue.
In the spirit of further appealing to the combined "Priest" and Tartakovsky fanbase, Screen Gems has released the animated backstory on mobile phones a full month prior to the film's May 13 release date.
To access the video, fans need only scan a mobile marker with their phone using the Microsoft Tag Reader app. The mobile marker itself can be found on the movie's official Facebook page and on display in movie theaters.
Sandwiched between an introduction by "Priest" star Maggie Q and a few live action shots found in earlier trailers is roughly 2.5 minutes detailing a near apocalyptic war between vampires and humans spanning multiple time periods.

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.

With awards season is underway comes the 38th Annual Annie Award nominations, which recognize the year’s best work in animation. Since the creation of the animation-specific Oscar category in 2001, the Annies have predicted the Academy Award winner every year except 2006 and 2008.
Unfortunately, the award has been tainted by controversy after CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg reportedly bought each DreamWorks Animation employee a membership in the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, skewing the voting in the studio’s favor. This likely resulted in a surprise sweep by DreamWorks Animations’ Kung Fu Panda at the Annies in 2008-2009 over Pixar’s eventual Oscar winner, Wall-e.
Disney Studios has since pulled its official support of the event and submissions for the awards, though individual animators are able to submit their films themselves. As a result, the rules were changed for individual achievement categories, but Disney sought a neutral committee of animators from every studio to propose and approve guidelines.

Two years ago, Kung-Fu Panda swept the awards over Wall-e pushing Disney and Pixar to withdraw from the organization and making everyone else wonder if there is any point in caring anymore about the ceremony. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, but DreamWorks (who pretty much run the show) lead the nominees.
According to /film, Disney’s reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization’s very loose membership requirements and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio’s favour. Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull said earlier this year,

The full list of nominations for the 38th Annie Awards were announced today with Dreamworks’s How to Train your Dragon gathering up the majority of nominations including Best Feature, Animation, Character Design and Voice Work for Gerard Butler and Jay Baruchel, as well as Directing nominations for Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois.
Pixar’s Up took home the Best Animated Feature earlier this year at the 2009 awards and when the awards are announced next February Lee Unkrich and his team are up from a number of awards, along with Disney’s Tangled, but the recent decision of Disney to withdraw support for the awards may go some way to explaining the relatively few number of nods.
It has been a great year for animation as the films on the list below attest, and it’s nice to see Sylvain Chomet’s enchanting film The Illusionist scoring a point against the domination of CG here.

DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" flew high above competition by nabbing 15 nominations for the 38th annual Annie Awards given by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood. ("How to Train Your Dragon" movie review)
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, will duke it out with Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. ("How to Train Your Dragon" interviews)
But there's controversy in the Annie Awards world. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that "Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged."
Apparently, Disney was complaining that the Annie Awards has favored DreamWorks in recent years such as when "Kung Fu Panda" won 10 trophies and beat Pixar's "Wall-e" in 2008.

Disney has tough competition in the form of itself this year, as “Tangled” and “Toy Story 3″ will compete against one another, along with a host of other fantastic animated films, at the 38th Annual Annie Awards.
The Annie Awards will be a battleground for the upcoming Oscar animation awards. This year, only three animated films will be nominated. Why? Because the rules that govern the Oscars are laughably outmoded. But that’s beside the point.
Fact is, the Annie Awards deserve attention amongst the many other awards shows because so many great animated films were released in 2010, arguably more than traditional films. “Tangled,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Despicable Me” and “The Illusionist” will jostle for the Best Animated Feature award.
Here’s a list of all the nominees.

“Despicable Me” (Illumination Entertainment)

The International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood has announced the nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Awards, and the DreamWorks feature How to Train Your Dragon leads the pack with more than ten nods. But there's a caveat; that and the full list of nominations after the break. This will be the first Annie Awards after Disney and Pixar withdrew from the organization [1] that organizes the awards. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, and Lee Unkrich was nominated Best Director. But in the feature deaprtment this is DreamWorks' show, with a few nods toward the Warner Bros. film Legend of the Guardians and a scant few other features such as The Illusionist. Disney's reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization's very loose membership requirements (read: almost non-existent requirements, until recently) and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio's favor.

Genndy Tartakovsky's new cartoon network show 'Sym-Bionic Titan' is premiering at 8 p.m. Friday on Cartoon Network in the states and to get you in the mood for some giant robot fighting madness we have posted a new clip from the show.
Genndy also provided an interview with Wired discussing the influences of his new show and the state of the 'Samurai Jack' feature film:
Wired.com: How long have you been an anime and mecha fan?
Genndy Tartakovsky: I grew up with Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Spectraman, Starblazers, Robotech, Voltron, Johnny Socko and other Japanese imports from the '70s and '80s. Add these shows to all the Loony Tunes, Hanna-Barbera, Tom and Jerry and Tex Avery cartoons that I watched, and you have my complete childhood TV schedule.
Wired.com: How long can we expect Sym-Bionic Titan to last at this point?...

Sym-bionic Titan: Episode One
Guest Review by Baron Fortnightly
Stars (the voices of): Kevin Thorns, Brian Posehin, Tara Strong, John Dimaggio | Created by Genndy Tartakovsky, Paul Rudish, Bryan Andrews
Sym-Bionic Titan is the latest Cartoon Network show from the mind of creator Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and the first Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons.
The plot is very old school Japanese anime, with Princess Ilana (Strong) being sent by her father to hide on Earth after their home planet of Galaluna is conquered. Her only companions are her surly bodyguard Lance (Kevin Thorns), and her bio-cybernetic robot Octus (Posehin).
Not only do they have to blend in at high school to keep hidden from America’s military and a very Kamen Rider looking mysterious government agency who spotted their crash landing and took their craft, but they must also face...
