What It Is: Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s iconic musical Cats returned to Broadway this summer, with British chanteuse Leona Lewis making her debut on the Great White Way as Grizabella, The Glamour Cat. (Her run in the show ended last month, and School of Rock actress Mamie Parris has since taken over the “Memory”-making role.) I went behind the scenes at the theater and got a crash course in stage makeup, skin-tight unitards and choreography before making my own debut on a Broadway stage.

Internet sensation Grumpy Cat will claw her way into the new Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s musical “Cats,” producers announced Thursday. Fear not — R&B sensation Leona Lewis will still be belting out “Memory” as Grizibella. But Grumpy Cat will make a cameo during the curtain call on Friday, September 30, at the Neil Simon Theatre. “Being selected as the first real cat to perform in ‘Cats’ on Broadway is an honor. I hate it,” Grumpy Cat in a statement scratched out by one of her handlers. “If I’m really being honest, I’d prefer to play the Phantom in ‘The Phantom.

"Les Miserables" and "The Danish Girl " helmer Tom Hooper is set tackle another film adaptation of an iconic musical, this time a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic "Cats" for Universal Pictures and Working Title says EW.
Premiering in 1981, the musical is inspired by a T.S. Eliot book and follows a group of cats who come together for an annual event where one of the felines is chosen to ascend to the 'Heaviside Layer' and be reborn. The musical produced such notable songs as "Memory," "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" and "Mr. Mistoffelees".
It won Best Musical at both the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards and ran for twenty-one years on the West End and eighteen years in London. To this day it remains the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history behind only "Phantom of the Opera," "Chicago" and "The Lion King" but...

The long-running Cats closed on Broadway in 2000, but the memory may soon live again. (Sorry, had to.) Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber told the Mail on Sunday's Event Magazine that the show, which is currently being revived in London, "will now definitely go to Broadway again. It’s very exciting." The revival features a rapping Rum Tum Tugger and stars Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger as the "Memory"-singing Grizabella.

More than 30 years after its Broadway debut, could "Cats" finally make its way to the big screen?
Yes, according to creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, who revealed in a recent interview that a planned revival of the stage musical had led to renewed interest in a film adaptation of the classic show. Speaking with Reuters, Webber said that the new take on "Cats" that's set to open in London's West End in December has made him think about bringing more of his hits back to the stage -- and perhaps back into movie theaters as well.
"Yes I think it's very possible that I might have a look at one or two of my shows," Lloyd Webber said of hits such as "Phantom of the Opera" and "Starlight Express." "And of course, the other thing that's happening is them being made into movies. ... There is considerable talk at last about '...

The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Les Misérables are three of the most popular Broadway musicals that have made their way to the big screen. Now it looks like Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats is going to to join them. It was only a matter of time before Cats got its feature film debut. The news comes from Webber himself in an interview with The Daily Mail when he said,
“I haven’t seen the [Les Mis] film but it’s fantastic for musicals because everybody wants to make them again. Universal has now got Cats out of the drawer in which they locked it years ago when they bought the rights and suddenly they’re talking about a film.”
Cats is one of Broadway-s longest-running musicals. It's been around since 1982, and it's based on T.S. Eliot‘s poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. There was an attempt...

It is one of the most famous musicals of all time, and yet a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats" has always been a tricky proposition due to the nature of the work.
Now, Webber tells The Daily Mail that Universal's success with the "Les Miserables" film has renewed the studio's interest in the long languishing adaptation of "Cats":

We may well still be a good half-year away from the arrival of Rio 2, but Fox have already kicked off their marketing campaign for the adventure comedy / musical sequel, and with good reason.
The original film did even better than expected, netting just shy of half a billion dollars. And with Rio 2 bowing just one week after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, two weeks after Noah, and opening opposite Stretch Armstrong, Fox are no doubt wanting to lay the groundwork for the second film as early as possible.
The first teaser trailer got the ball rolling back in the spring, and now the studio have released a new teaser trailer, via Yahoo Movies, bringing to life Memory from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

There are plenty of musicals that stand out as among the upper tier of the genre, but few are as easily recognized as both defining and reinventing it at the same time. Cabaret, winner of 8 Oscars, and only missing Best Picture on the technicality of releasing in 1972, pushed the boundaries of the possible abilities and sensibilities available to a musical feature film, and the effects of the new stage it built can be felt all the way to last year’s Les Miserables, which brings forward the surprising power inherent in a showcase of song that is not only not happy, but delivers a variety of emotion based on a solid exposition of the singer’s circumstance. The following of Jean Valjean’s musical efforts closely resembles the now iconic shift in the performance of Cabaret‘s theme song as we work our way to the end of the film.

Jonathan Franzen's family epic, a new collection from Seamus Heaney, Philip Larkin's love letters, a memoir centred on tiny Japanese sculptures ... which books most excited our writers this year?
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
In Red Dust Road (Picador) Jackie Kay writes lucidly and honestly about being the adopted black daughter of white parents, about searching for her white birth mother and Nigerian birth father, and about the many layers of identity. She has a rare ability to portray sentiment with absolutely no sentimentality. Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns (Random House) is a fresh and wonderful history of African-American migration. Chang-rae Lee's The Surrendered (Little, Brown) is a grave, beautiful novel about people who experienced the Korean war and the war's legacy. And David Remnick's The Bridge (Picador) is a thorough and well-written biography of Barack Obama. The many Americans who believe invented biographical details about Obama would do well to read it.

British songstress Lily Allen is no fan of newly-found singing sensation Susan Boyle, branding her as "so overrated." Lily took it to her Twitter account after watching the 47-year-old vocalist's second appearance on the reality show "Britain's Got Talent" over the weekend.
"I thought her timing was off on 'Britain's Got Talent' on Sunday - no control, and I don't think she has an amazing voice," Lily wrote when criticizing Susan's performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Memory". Lily went on writing, "She can sing, but it's not about talent with her, is it?"
That's not all, Lily also claimed, Susan "seems like a lovely lady but, if the show is about talent, then that Shaheen [Jafargholi] kid should win." There hasn't been a single word of defense from Susan or "Britain's Got Talent" regarding Lily's criticism.
