Harking back to those erotic thrillers of yore, especially from the 1980s and 90s, writer-director Joy Wilkinson’s 7 Keys, her debut feature, starts out full of promise and potential — much like the impromptu hook-up that gets the plot rolling. Unfortunately, like many an ill-starred love match, what follows is disappointing as things evolve in a lurid and yet strangely predictable direction. But while it all goes sour and south in the last act, there are definitely sparks of originality in the early running, supported by a brace of strong performances from Emma McDonald and Billy Postlethwaite, who deserve better than what the script gives them to work with.
Premiering in the Visions section at SXSW, this low-budget striver of a feature may find berths with streamers, and ought to at least attract attention from casting directors looking for new talents.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Epix will adapt author Bernard Cornwell's 'Arthurian' trilogy, "The Warlord Chronicles", including "The Winter King", "Excalibur" and "Enemy Of God", showcasing 'magic' as a mixture of coincidence, psychology, primitive technology and illusion falling on the superstitions, religious fundamentalism and intolerance of the era:
"Once upon a time, in a land that was called Britain, these things happened ... well, maybe," said Cornwell. "'The Warlord Trilogy' is my attempt to tell the story of 'Arthur', 'Rex Quondam Rexque Futurus', the 'Once and Future King', although I doubt he ever was a king. I suspect he was a great warlord of the sixth century. 'Nennius', who was one of the earliest historians to mention Arthur, calls him the 'dux bellorum', the 'leader of battles' or 'warlord'..."
"Post-Roman Britain was a difficult time for the native Britons, being threatened by invasion from the Anglo-Saxons in the East and raids from the Irish in the West.

Following Arthur’s journey, we have certainly come a long way, seeing the man tackle all the challenges he faced. In The Winter King Season 1 finale, he had not one but two tasks, both of which could prove deadly if not done right. Firstly, there was the deal with the Saxons. He was going to meet Aelle himself, and that too with just the tin gained from Kernow. After that challenge, he had to find Derfel before he perished in his quest to rescue Nimue from the Isle of Death. Derfel had left Dumnonia after he found out that Arthur had banished Nimue from the lands. This left Arthur without a Saxon translator, a department where Guinevere helped a little, although when Aelle came to meet Arthur, it turned out he spoke the British tongue rather well.

The ninth episode of The Winter King, goes into some unexpected territories, but if you’d noticed the hints from the first episode, you’d have seen this one coming. People had questioned Arthur’s intentions since the moment he returned. In fact, even earlier, Uther didn’t trust Arthur, and he had banished him, marking one of his most significant decisions, one that was potentially his worst. After he returned, Arthur was questioned by people like Owain, Gorfydd, and Cadwys, who seemed too gripped by their own personal interests to really make us see Arthur’s vulnerabilities or make us question whether Arthur had malicious intent. But now, even those people in his life who respected him and cared for him have started to turn against him. Morgan, Derfel, and Guinevere were the ones who were questioning Arthur’s decisions, and he too, for a brief moment, showed that...

The eighth episode of The Winter King juxtaposes steamy romance with brutal killings and organically moves Arthur’s story into a terrifying terrain. Arthur had married Guinevere, and his services had been conducted by Sansum, the Christian zealot. Arthur had listened to his heart, and soon the forces against him were going to attack, as if to punish him for his decision. Gorfydd, obviously, was the one directly impacted by Arthur’s escape with Guinvere, but Cadwys, Nimue, and Bedwin were going to create problems for Arthur, intentionally and otherwise. The show’s brutal turn is shocking, but when the stakes are this high, nothing else can be expected.

The seventh episode of The Winter King brought home the feeling that Arthur wasn’t as infallible as he was made out to be. It is the first time in the series that Arthur makes an escape like a thief in the night. The fact that even Arthur could go wrong or take a U-turn on a decision that he had once taken with such vigor shows that his journey has just started. The episode gave us insights into the gender dynamics in Arthur’s time and how alliances were formed between kingdoms. Arthur was to marry Ceinwyn for the alliance to work, but Guinevere’s entry complicated things a bit. Now the ball was in Arthur’s court, and he made a decision that could destabilize all of Britain.

The fifth episode of the MGM+ series The Winter King, really showed us a glimpse of how intricate the story can be. The theatricality of the series was one of its unique features, but the fifth episode really puts a premium on it. Arthur goes up against Owain, and the result is difficult to swallow. The previous episode set up the premise for this episode’s main conflict. Derfel remained the mute witness, but he stayed true to Arthur. Merlin and Nimue’s arcs were moved forward, even though they don’t directly converge with Arthur’s, which gives a proper demarcation between plotlines. Owain had gone off to Cadwys in the previous episode and returned with the tax. Derfel was given gold coins almost as a bribe for keeping his mouth shut about the tragedy in the tin mines. But Arthur, a thinking man, caught onto his lie, and...

The Winter King Episode 4 hinged on the arrival of King Gofydd. Arthur had let Gundleus go in the previous episode, keeping his beloved Ladwys as leverage. Meanwhile, Owain had left Arthur and gone off on his own adventure with Derfel and the others to get the tax from Cadwys. Arthur was left waiting for Gundleus’ return. He also had to keep an eye on Ladwys, because if she died, Gundleus wouldn’t ever return. The Edling King’s Naming Ceremony was inching closer, and as the days passed, everybody’s faith dwindled in Arthur’s seemingly whimsical decision to let Gundleus go. Nimue, too, finds herself in a dilemma after Merlin returns to Caer Cadarn. There are a lot of things to cover in The Winter King Episode 4, so here’s a recap.

The third episode of The Winter King introduces Arthur and his intentions after returning to Caer Cadarn in a completely unexpected way. He returned from Gaul, the Land of King Ban, and did things his own way. Everybody was surprised by how he didn’t seem to believe in vengeance. Only Arthur knew what his plan was. The most affected was Nimue. She had been saved by Arthur and his men, who were soldiers for King Ban, and yet felt betrayed by his decisions. The episode tried to give us a closer look into Arthur’s mind. His beliefs and passions were explored, and an attempt at contrasting his thinking with the others’ was evident. As far as Derfel and Lord Owain’s arc is considered, they, too, had their own perspective about Arthur’s return. Here is a recap of The Winter King Episode 3:

There are literally hundreds of films and TV shows about or featuring King Arthur going back well over a century – there are silent films, musicals, animated films, comedies, dramas. You name it, there is a King-Arthur-themed version of it. There are not a small number of “Best of…” lists floating around the internet as well. But how do you know which of the recommendations is really going to scratch your King Arthur-shaped itch?

It is fairly well known that J.R.R. Tolkien produced a huge amount of work set in Middle-earth and other parts of Arda (the name for his imaginary world as a whole), most of which was not published in his lifetime. His son Christopher devoted much of his own life to collecting and publishing the many, many stories of Arda that J.R.R. did not manage to get published himself in various collections, and that work continues even after Christopher’s own death in new collections edited by others.

Warning: contains major spoilers for The Winter King episode 2 (not yet airing in the UK), and repeated reference to sexual assault.
There are endless ways to hurt a female character on screen. Just like men, they’ve got sliceable flesh and bones that break. Women can be tortured with hot irons or sharp spikes. Their loved ones can be torn from them, their wealth stolen and their homes burned to the ground. Any of the above would motivate a woman to an act of high-stakes revenge. Really it would. Just try it and see.
So… how come it’s always rape?
In The Winter King, MGM’s new Arthurian action series adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicle books, King Uther Pendragon puts his trust in the wrong man. Chronicling Arthur’s journey in the new MGM series The Winter King, we are already in battle mode as, in the second episode, Gundleus sheds his meek persona and reveals who he truly is. Arthur’s return to Caer Cadarn is imminent, and the question that must have mattered to the creators is, ‘How heroic can Arthur’s journey really be?’ The stakes in episode 2 go through the roof, and one has to squeamishly watch every frame, as you never know when and how another gruesome and unpredictable death will occur. As we know, Arthur was banished in the previous episode, and Merlin went to bring him back after the birth of Prince Mordred. According to Merlin’s vision, Mordred was going to grow up to be an evil tyrant, and Arthur was the only hope for fighting him and reuniting Britain.

There is both good news and bad news for the new British series The Winter King. The bad news first: It will be compared to Game of Thrones, and there is just no way around that. The storyline, the setting, and the treatment will all remind viewers of that legendary fantasy drama. The good news for The Winter King is that it is so sure of its world and its characters that it manages to stay grounded and has enough gusto to stand on its own as a semi-historical drama. The first episode lays out the primary characters and builds a solid foundation for the series to leap from.
The plotline goes something like this: In the 5th century Ad, in Britain, High King Uther Pendragon is trying to stop the tribal wars and is making efforts to unite Britain. Their main adversaries are the dreaded ‘Saxons.’ Uther banishes his ‘illegitimate’ son Arthur,...

Chivalry is not dead — at least onscreen. See: the countless film and TV versions of the medieval King Arthur legend, in which good and brave knight Arthur Pendragon battles for the heart and soul of a kingdom. The 10-episode drama, The Winter King, based on author Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles trilogy and set in 5th century Britain, has a fresh tilt that makes the hero even more impressive: his painful origin story as an outcast. “Arthur is trying to reconcile with childhood trauma and face the harsh realities of what it means to become a leader for [moral] good,” says former Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Iain De Caestecker.“We first meet him living under the weight of the title of bastard son, having spent his life all but rejected by his father.” (Credit: Simon Ridgway) That would be High King Uther, who unjustly banishes Arthur. Eventually, the Druid...
