Some breaking news from Westeros: The Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has added a major talent from Black Mirror to serve as its debut season’s lead director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Owen Harris has boarded the HBO drama as an executive producer and will also direct the first three episodes, establishing the directorial vision for the series. Harris is best known for helming two of Black Mirror‘s finest episodes — “Be Right Back” and the widely acclaimed “San Junipero.”
In addition, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ episode count has now been revealed: The first season will be six episodes, making for a tighter opener than the 10-episode first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The run time seems appropriate given Knight is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 160-page novella The Hedge Knight rather than one of his 900-page epic novels.

The phrase “we’re our own worst enemies” takes on a literal meaning in Apple TV+’s “Dark Matter,” based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name, and adapted by the author for television. A massive and intricate puzzle, the series is shocking and unsettling, but doesn’t quite satisfy in the end.
“Dark Matter” opens in present-day Chicago. Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a scruffy physics professor, is living an unremarkable but happy middle-class existence with his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their teenage son, Charlie (Oakes Fegley). After a night out celebrating his friend Ryan’s (Jimmi Simpson) prestigious science award,...

If you don’t have kids, you may not have heard of “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” If you have a preschooler, it has likely become a welcome upgrade from the “Cocomelon” of your child’s nursery school days.
No intended shade at “Cocomelon,” the other monster hit for Netflix in the kids space. “Cocomelon” is simplistic animation set to familiar nursery rhymes — it’s a low lift both in terms of production and consumption. “Gabby’s,” a combination of (a little) live-action and (a lot of) animation, is a child’s entry point into storytelling and imaginative play. It was for my kids — and millions of others.
For 2023, the top 5 children’s series on streaming ranked like this, per Nielsen:

It’s hardly unusual for TV journalists to spend time at the movies, but never has a weekend of festival programming seemed so tailor-made for us. The Chicago Critics Film Festival kicked off its 11th edition with a lineup that was fairly bursting with small-screen talent and resonance.
Opening night on May 3 saw the Chicago premiere of Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo, who had already reinvigorated The Walking Dead franchise before winning an Emmy for his role in Euphoria. Elsewhere, his co-star Hunter Schafer, one of Euphoria’s many breakouts, gave a gorgeously wounded performance in Cuckoo, a new horror-thriller from Tilman Singer.

David Letterman is behind a lauded new documentary set to hit theaters later this month.
Set against the backdrop of the male-dominated world of orchestral conducting, Maestra documents five women from across the globe competing in “La Maestra,” the world’s only competition for female conductors.
As Maestra director Maggie Contreras pointed out to The New York Times last year, the production of the film itself serves as further example of what can be done to lift up women’s voices. Our film is a microcosm of what society needs to be,” she told the paper. “Throughout the process of making this film, men in privileged positions said: ‘Hey, you should do this.’”
Letterman was one of these people, offering to co-produce the film under his Worldwide Pants banner.
“David Letterman gave us our first amount of money,” Contreras told the Times last year.

Jeopardy! super-champ Amy Schneider is ready to respond head-on to criticism about her inclusion in the current Masters tournament. Season 2 of Jeopardy! Masters kicked off last week with six of the game’s most elite players battling it out for the coveted title and $500,000 grand prize. Those competing include reigning Masters champ James Holzhauer, last year’s runners-up Matt Amodio & Mattea Roach, 2024 Tournament of Champions winner Yogesh Raut, and Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament winner Victoria Groce. The sixth and final spot went to Schneider as a Producers’ Pick, despite placing fifth in Masters Season 1 and losing the Jit! to Groce. Some fans felt the spot should have gone to someone else who hasn’t had as many opportunities as Schneider. “We just saw her in Jit, whats the point if she can lose that and just move on anyways,” said one commenter on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum when the line-up was first announced.

Travis and Jason Kelce have become household names over the past year, especially since Taylor Swift entered their world, but it seemed the three stars on Monday’s (May 6) Celebrity Wheel of Fortune had been living under a rock. Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter, fashion designer Christian Siriano, and Schitt’s Creek actress Sarah Levy were left stumped when trying to solve a puzzle under the “Family” category. Ritter had control of the wheel and managed to guess her way through each of the letters to spell out the answer, “Travis and Jason Kelce,” even though she had no idea who they were. While Ritter agonized over her guesses, Levy and Siriano could be heard off-screen saying, “I don’t know what that last word is” and “What is this word?” After Ritter guessed “K” as her final letter, she’d solved the entire thing despite not knowing what it meant.

Chances are, fans of retro TV could probably name at least two spinoffs of ABC’s Happy Days — the two successful ones — but there are many more TV shows that can count the classic sitcom as a predecessor. In fact, Happy Days itself was a spinoff of sorts, evolving out “Love and the Television Set,” an episode of the ABC anthology Love, American Style. That episode introduced the Cunningham family as Richie (Ron Howard) gets a new TV set that he and pal Potsie (Anson Williams) consider a chick magnet. Happy Days initially focused on the Cunninghams and Potsie and their life in 1950s Milwaukee, but soon it was the lovable greaser Fonzie (Henry Winkler) who stole the spotlight. The show eventually hit No. 1 and aired 11 seasons before the series finale, the two-parter “Passages,” capped off the story on May 8, 1984, 40 years ago now. Four decades removed from ...

Nearly 30 years ago, a group of teenagers killed 14-year-old Reena Virk in British Columbia and sparked a nation-wide conversation about teen bullying and violence. When author Rebecca Godfrey published a book about those events eight years later, she dug deeper to humanize the young women at the center of the crime, exploring female rage and what happens when it is no longer internalized.
“Female rage is usually turned inward. I didn’t want to romanticize the violence of these girls, but at the same time, it seemed interesting to explore how and why these girls were a threat,” she said in a 2019 interview.

Venerable actor Bette Midler says that her partially-autobiographical 2000 sitcom “Bette” represented a series of mistakes.
Among the errors, was her decision not to sue Lindsay Lohan, who appeared as her daughter in the pilot episode, but who did not continue in the following 16 episodes which broadcast on CBS in the U.S.
Midler unpacked her regrets on “Fail Better,” a podcast hosted by fellow star David Duchovny. “’Bette.’ A big, big mistake. I think for several reasons,” Midler said.
She suggested that Lohan’s early exit from “Bette” may have contributed to its failure. “Lindsay Lohan was cast as my daughter in the pilot.

It was a double elimination night on The Challenge: All Stars Season 4’s latest episode, “Karma Maria,” and unfortunately for the season’s most veteran contestant, Kefla Hare, he was one of the two contestants who didn’t make it out of the arena unscathed. Kefla, a Road Rules: Down Under alum who was last on a Challenge 25 years ago with the Real World/Road Rules Challenge (which he won), had a good showing this season — until a hamstring injury threw him off of the game during the latest episode’s challenge, “Take a Seat,” a stadium-sized version of “Musical Chairs.” Since Kefla had a star, earned during his elimination bout with Syrus Yarbrough, he was targeted for the elimination alongside fellow star-holder Steve Meinke. The two faced off in the “Rope Rumble” elimination, but thanks to Kefla’s leg and Steve’s experience with wrestling, Kefla was not victorious.

That’s because Stephanie Clifford, best known as Stormy Daniels in her successful adult film career, testified today about the details of her one night with the married future presidential candidate in a golf tournament hotel room while his wife Melania was home recovering from the birth of the couple’s only child. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for FBI: International Season 3 Episode 11 “Touts.”] The Fly Team is saying goodbye to its boss after the latest FBI: International episode, so how was Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank) written out? The short answer is simple: He wasn’t. Instead, the episode is very much about Smitty (Eva-Jane Willis) and her family, with the case bringing her back in contact with her mother (Pippa Haywood) and eventually leading to a major revelation: Her biological father is her mother’s friend Niall (Patrick Bergin). For Forrester, meanwhile, it’s very much business as usual, trying to get information out of MI5 for the case. There isn’t any kind of exit or even hint as to what will take him away from the Fly Team (which leads us to believe that our last theory here could hold water). But this tracks with what Willis had told TV Insider ahead of the episode. She said that it ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for FBI: International Season 3 Episode 11 “Touts.”] Megan “Smitty” Garretson’s (Eva-Jane Willis) professional and personal lives collide in the latest FBI: International episode, and by the end, she’s in for quite the revelation. Following the murder of a former member of the Irish Republican Army (Ira)-turned-u.S. citizen, the Fly Team investigates, and Smitty reunites with her mother (Pippa Haywood), whose friend Niall (Patrick Bergin) ends up being vital to the case (and Smitty). He wears a wire to get their suspect to admit to the crimes, that he gave Smitty her nickname (she was obsessed with Smarties when she was 3 but called them Smitties), and turns out to be her biological father, as she realizes on her own and has him confirm. Below, Willis discusses that shocking reveal, finding out how her character got her nickname, and more, and teases the last two episodes of the season. (This was also Luke ...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Resident Alien Season 3 finale, “Homecoming.”] The future of Syfy‘s beloved comedy Resident Alien is unclear. The series, which aired its Season 3 finale on April 3, has yet to be renewed for Season 4. It might experience a network change in order to save it, but that could come at a cost. Well, a decrease in cost. The powers that be at NBCUniversal are reportedly considering moving Resident Alien from Syfy to its sister channel, USA Network, according to Deadline. A fourth season at Syfy is reportedly not likely. As it stands, USA only has one scripted TV series, Chucky, and it’s shared with Syfy. If the Alan Tudyk-led comedy were to move to USA, it’s possible that its budget would be drastically reduced to as little as $500,000 per episode, Deadline reports. The production behind Resident Alien, UCP, part of Universal Studio Group, reportedly wants to keep the series...

Jeopardy! fans weren’t the only ones who noticed a larger-than-usual number of triple-stumper clues in the Tuesday, May 7 episode. The winner of that night’s game told viewers on the Jeopardy! Reddit discussion board that she noticed the high volume as well while playing, noting that even though she won, she’s “not particularly happy” with how she played. It’s lucky, in that case, that her win allows her to play again and try to redeem herself. Playing in this matchup were returning champ Matthew Smith, a paramedic from New York City; Allison Gross, a data scientist from Cleveland, Ohio; and Daniel King, a Brown University graduate from Parsippany, New Jersey. Their scores were pretty neck-and-neck by the time of the first break, but Gross took the lead by the end of the first round. At that point the scores were Gross with $5,800, Smith with $2,600, and King with...

John Mulaney’s weeklong new show, Everybody’s in LA, isn’t technically a “late-night” show, though it is live globally on Netflix, which means it’s on in late night somewhere, even if’s really late, like in London or Paris.
Speaking of which, Monday night’s show even went live to a group of viewers watching the show (or not) somewhere in Paris, where it would have been a little after 4 Am.
But mainly, this seems like a late-night show because it looks, feels, and sounds like a late-night show: host, monologue, guests, couch, pre-taped segments, music guest to close. As the old saying goes: “If it quacks like a duck…”
In this case, honks like a goose might be more appropriate. So far this show is setting some kind of new standard for being as loosey/goosey as a gaggle in flight.
At times that plays both funny and charming,...
