Ronald D. Moore is returning to Sony Pictures Television after inking a new multi-year deal with the studio. He’d left in 2021 for Disney’s 20th Television but is now returning to his former studio home.
Under the partnership, his Tall Ship Productions banner will develop and produce scripted series for cable and streaming platforms with longtime collaborators Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis.
Moore, who previously worked at the studio 2010-2020, developed and executive produced Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind” and Starz’s “Outlander.” He also serves as an executive producer on “Outlander” spin-off “Blood of My Blood,” which is currently in production, and “For All Mankind” spin-off “Star City.” Other credits during his previous tenure at Sony include executive producer on the anthology series “Philip K. This year’s summer box office has been filled with somber emotions so far, but Disney Pixar's ‘Inside Out 2’ is eliciting joy and relief, delivering a massive $155 million domestic opening. The animated sequel shattered projections and set several records, including the biggest animated debut since ‘The Incredibles 2’ in 2018 and the largest opening overall since last summer's ‘Barbie.’ Its $295 million global start also set a new high mark for an animated film, and while it coincided with three major streaming releases over the weekend (“The Boys” Season 4 premiere, the conclusion of “Bridgerton” Season 3, and the second season debut of “House of the Dragon”), that programming was geared toward adults and didn’t pose a threat to theatrical family fare.
The stellar start for ‘Inside Out 2’ provided a huge boost to the summer box office after a sluggish past few months. The film's reviews were overwhelmingly positive at 8.0 on IMDb, fueling excellent word-of-mouth. Amy Poehler returned as the voice of Joy, leading an ensemble that included new additions like Maya Hawke as the personification of teenage Anxiety.
In second place, Sony's ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ fell 41.6% to $33 million in its second weekend, bringing the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence action sequel to $112 million domestically and $215 million globally. That’s still a solid showing that eased any concerns about Smith’s ability to draw crowds post-slap.
20th Century's ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ took third place with $5.2 million in its sixth weekend. The sci-fi action film has now grossed $157.8 million in North America and $374.5 million globally, continuing the strong run for the revived Apes franchise.
While Hollywood has accepted that 2024 totals will end up well behind 2023’s box office gross, the successful opening was a step towards chipping away at a steep year-over-year decline (down 26% going into the weekend). The industry can chalk this up as a win, but the relief will be short-lived as studios look to the remaining summer tentpoles—like ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Despicable Me 4,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and ‘Twisters’—to deliver before shifting focus to the fall and holiday seasons.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” will enjoy a release in mainland Chinese cinemas on July 26, simultaneous with its North American outing. And, despite hailing from what is arguably Marvel’s most adult franchise, the film will incur only “minimal cuts” for its China release.
All foreign films entering China require permission to be imported, to clear censorship and must be allocated a release date by local authorities.
The Film Bureau-approved China release on July 26 was announced Monday morning local time in China via Marvel’s local Weibo (social media) account and subsequently confirmed by Disney.
In a separate Weibo post, Marvel said that star Hugh Jackman (who has a considerable following in China), Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy will be in China for promotional duties on July 2.
While Disney and Marvel were not specific about the censor-imposed edits to the film, the cuts were reported to be “minimal and are due to violence,...

Liu Cixin’s best-selling sci-fi book The Three-Body Problem is heading home to China to get another screen adaptation. Zhang Yimou, arguably China’s most revered living filmmaker, is set to direct a Chinese-language feature film based on the novel, it was revealed Sunday during a forum at the Shanghai International Film festival.
In Shanghai, Wang Changtian, chairman of leading local studio Beijing Enlight Media, said his company was in the early stages of developing the project, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. Three-Body Universe Cultural Development Co., a subsidiary of Yoozoo Pictures and the copyright holder for the book and related media, also confirmed the project was in the works.

Sabrina Carpenter defended her friend and producer Jack Antonoff this week, criticizing those who complain about his monolithic influence on the music industry.
“Fuck them all,” Carpenter told Rolling Stone of Antonoff’s critics. “I think he’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.”
Antonoff, a frequent collaborator of Taylor Swift, has also worked with Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Florence and the Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, Clairo and many more. Following the release of Swift’s most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, many online posited the claim that his widespread influence was leading to a monopoly of style in modern pop music.
Carpenter — who was one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour openers — pushed back against the criticism, saying Antonoff’s many collabs are all the result of pure talent. “When he’s in a room, he’s able to literally touch every instrument in...

According to Evan Rachel Wood, one of the scenes in the 2007 Beatles themed musical Across the Universe is more based in reality than one might assume. While presenting a special Cinespia screening of the film at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Wood shared a behind-the-scenes story from the set.
Notably, Wood did not present the film in person but instead recorded a video because she is “recovering from a knee injury and not going anywhere.”
“They told me to share a funny story or moment from when we were on set,” Wood said. “Well, I’ll just say this … during the ‘I Am the Walrus’ scene, any moment you see myself and Jim Sturgess, we are actually tripping.”
Wood continued, indicating that the stars had taken real drugs while shooting parts of the hallucinogenic sequence.

Ian McKellen is expected to make a full recovery after falling off the stage during a performance at the Noël Coward theatre in London on Monday evening.
McKellen, 85, was performing as John Falstaff in a production of Henry IV, Parts One and Two, which began a 12-week run as part of a show titled Player Kings on London’s West End in April when he lost his footing and fell during a fight scene. As the house lights turned on, the audience heard him cry out and staff soon rushed to help. The show was eventually cancelled, and the crowd evacuated from the theater.
“Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of Player Kings,” a statement from McKellen’s rep noted. “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make...

Griffin Dunne’s family has done so many larger-than-life, unbelievable things that when the actor-director-producer started to write his memoir “The Friday Afternoon Club: A Memoir of Family,” he realized it wasn’t enough to start the story with his complex writer father Dominick Dunne.
In fact, it was impossible to understand the forces that shaped the Dunnes, including his uncle John Gregory Dunne and sister Dominique Dunne — without understanding his father’s abusive upbringing in an Irish Catholic family, his mother’s Mexican heritage and all great love stories, clandestine affairs, celebrity encounters and tragedies that seem to surround them, buffeted with lots of pitch-black mordant humor.
The heart of the new memoir is the 1982 murder of Griffin Dunne’s younger sister, “Poltergeist” star Dominique Dunne. It’s the first time he’s really grappled with telling the story of that pivotal event in his family’s history. The...

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday dismissed speculation that President Biden froze while standing in the stage lights and had to be guided to an exit by former President Barack Obama at the end of an A-list Hollywood fundraiser on Saturday night.
“Let’s not forget President Obama, President Biden have a relationship. They are friends. They’re like family to each other, and I think that’s what you saw,” she told reporters during a press briefing in response to a question posed by The Daily Mail in reference to a viral clip shared by The Hollywood Reporter. “You saw the President put his hand … on the back of President Biden and they walked off the stage after taking questions … from Jimmy Kimmel. While Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ performance of “Empire State of Mind” at the Tony Awards Sunday was one of the ceremony’s buzzy moments, it also sparked rumblings that their performance was pretaped.
According to sources, and reporting by The New York Times, their segment, which was shown onstage via a video screen, was indeed prerecorded. Their performance came at the end of a medley of songs from Hell’s Kitchen, which were performed by the cast of the musical live onstage at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
Keys is a producer on the musical, and also provided the show’s score, which includes preexisting songs such as “Empire State of Mind” and “Fallin’,” as well as new material.
After the cast performance onstage, Keys was wheeled out playing piano, where she started playing and singing “Empire State of Mind.” She then ran out into the audience,...

Calista Flockhart is opening up about her titular role in the hit ’90s show Ally McBeal.
In a conversation for The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast, the Feud: Capote vs. The Swans star discussed how her quick rise to fame thanks to Ally McBeal changed her daily life.
Flockhart, who was in a play at the time, recalled flying to Los Angeles during the audition process for Ally McBeal, noting that her co-star Jane Krakowski happened to be on the same flight. “I always remember it was a whole room of people in suits, and there was no camera, there was no makeup … It kind of felt like a theater audition. It felt like I was in a play all of a sudden,” she said about the process.

Ian McKellen was hospitalized after falling off stage during a performance of “Player Kings” at the Noël Coward Theatre on the West End in London, according to the BBC.

When TCM channel host Dave Karger used to be a writer for Entertainment Weekly in his early days as a print journalist, he would focus a great deal on interviewing the big pop stars of the day, along with his duties on the film beat. But little did very many people suspect then that what he really wanted to be writing about was “Laura”… not Branigan, but David Raksin’s music for the classic 1945 noir. That was the film that really prompted Karger’s lifelong love of movie scoring.

Woody Harrelson revealed on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast that he got into a motorcycle accident while he was driving to the studio to record the interview alongside his “Cheers” co-star and longtime friend Ted Danson. Harrelson collided with a Tesla and was thrown over his handlebars and over the hood of the car. He was wearing a helmet and avoided any potential head injury.
“A tumble is a fair term. I did go over my handlebars,” Harrelson revealed on the podcast following the accident. “I was honestly and embarrassingly passing this Tesla on the left that I...

“I feel like I’m at the adult table at Thanksgiving when I’m supposed to still be at the kids’ table,” announces Francesca Sloane, moments into THR‘s TV Producer Roundtable. “It’s surreal.”
The Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner may have the shortest résumé among her peers gathered at the Fairmont Century Plaza for the live event, but she is by no means out of place. That became crystal clear when the conversation turned to show envy. “I was envious watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” says The Crown creator Peter Morgan. “Dealing with repressed British people for so long, I was peering over the fence thinking, ‘Look how much fun they’re having!’ “
That was not the end of the love fest. Ripley writer-director Steven Zaillian picked Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country, and vice versa. “In Mexico, there’s bad envy and good envy,” explains López.

The audience for the Tony Awards took a hit Sunday — which was also one of the most lightly viewed Sunday on all of traditional TV in recent history.
The Tonys averaged 3.51 million viewers, according to fast national ratings from Nielsen that include out-of-home viewing. Those figures may change slightly in the final numbers, but as it stands, the Broadway honors declined by about 15 percent year to year; last year’s show delivered 4.12 million viewers. It’s the second straight year the Tony Awards have lost viewers. (The awards also streamed on Paramount+, but viewing on that platform isn’t part of Nielsen’s on-air ratings.)
Part of the declines can likely be attributed to Sunday being a very low TV usage night. Primetime on Father’s Day is rarely a big night anyway (give or take a live sports telecast that might fall on the day), but overall TV use...

Matthias Schoenaerts had worked with Kate Winslet before, but never like this. Never as a lackey engaging in a psychosexual power play with a capricious dictator convinced bacteria is flooding her palace. It almost goes without saying that The Regime is far less restrained than Schoenaerts and Winslet’s previous screen romance, the largely forgotten 2014 period film A Little Chaos.
“We both were like, ‘Ok, so what is this mad piece of work that we’re reading?’ ” Schoenaerts says of his first conversation with Winslet about the HBO limited series. “ ‘Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Is it both?’ We were trying to figure out what the tone was going to be.”
Will Tracy, who created and co-wrote the show, has a résumé heavy on humorous genre hybrids, including Succession, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and The Menu. According to Schoenaerts, Tracy was careful never to define...

Actors’ Equity will stop issuing contracts for work on projects in development, effective immediately, as negotiations for a new contract have stalled.
The union of actors and stage managers began negotiations with the Broadway League on Jan. 22, and the current agreement expired Feb. 11. Equity Negotiating Team chair Stephen Bogardus said in a statement that the decision came as a result of an unsatisfactory wage package put forward by the League. The League said in a statement that it had utilized federal mediation services as part of the negotiating process and argued it had been negotiating in good faith.
This is the second time Actors’ Equity has gone on strike in regards to developmental work. In 2019, the union went on a 33-day strike over this contract, which pertains to workshops and readings of shows held before potential full productions on Broadway or elsewhere. In the end, union members who take part...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is calling “bullshit” when it comes to comedy being hurt by political correctness. Speaking on the “On With Kara Swisher” podcast (via The Daily Beast), the Emmy winner pushed back against the idea that comedy has in any way suffered due to a changing social landscape that favors P.C. content over anything offensive.
“There’s a lot of talk about how comics can’t be funny now,” said Louis-Dreyfus. “I think that’s bullshit. Physical comedy and intellectual comedy and political comedy, I think, has never been more interesting, because there’s so much to do.”

It might just be the most difficult job in Hollywood: working as the flack for a studio CEO with an insatiable hunger for press — as long as it’s of the fawning kind. Six months after Warner Bros. Discovery’s chief communications officer and Murdoch alum Nathaniel Brown’s surprise departure from the company, David Zaslav is close to naming a chief spin doctor following a desperate high-level search for Brown’s replacement, Hot Source has learned. The absence is keenly felt at a company in dire need of someone to help deflect attention from Zas’s monster pay package and Warner Discovery’s likely loss of NBA rights.
The new flack, described as a “big name out of the box” will oversee both policy and comms, and will come with political experience Hot Source has learned. “It’s a Geoff Morrell type but not Geoff Morrell!,” a Wbd insider...

[This story contains major spoilers from the season two premiere of House of the Dragon.]
The House of the Dragon premiere’s “Blood and Cheese” ending was a shock to everyone in the audience, with a few key exceptions: those who read George R.R. Martin’s source material, those who read about the source material and those who encountered the spoilers ahead of time. Add one prominent name to that last category: Phia Saban, the actress who plays Queen Helaena.
Blood and Cheese are the assassins Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) hired to murder Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). But the duo instead stumble upon Queen Helaena Targaryen (Saban) and her toddler twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. They demand Helaena tell them which is Jaehaerys, and kill the child in his bed.
Appearing on the official House of the Dragon podcast this week, Saban opened up about how far in advance she knew about the ending of the season two premiere, saying, “If you...

At the Bentonville Film Festival this weekend, the diversity-minded event’s Founder and Chair Geena Davis spoke about the legacy of her 1991 feminist masterstroke, Thelma & Louise, while insisting that remake-happy Hollywood had better keep their hands off this one because updating the story would be “pointless.”
“Well, it must never be remade,” the Oscar winner told Indiewire in an interview at the Arkansas festival. “I mean, it’s 30-something years later, and it holds up more than others. I’m not saying this because I’m in it, but it really holds up. And there’s no need to revisit it. What would be the point? In my opinion.”
Thelma & Louise, with a script penned by Callie Khouri, created a firestorm of controversy upon its 1991 release. Culture wars around sex and gender roles were palpable when the Ridley Scott-directed hit premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and...

Maybe you’re sick of hearing about all the turmoil over at the Washington Post in recent weeks. How Sir William Lewis, a veteran of the Murdoch news empire, now WaPo’s CEO, has sparked outrage amongst much of the staff by pushing out editor Sally Buzbee and bringing in his British buddy Robert Winnett. But there’s another new player at the paper — also a Murdoch vet — who has been getting less ink, although there’s clearly plenty of ink to spill. That’d be Matt Murray, the Post’s new Executive Editor.
Two years ago, during the summer of 2022, when Murray was editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, that paper ran a bombshell story headlined “Elon Musk’s Friendship With Sergey Brin Ruptured by Alleged Affair.” The story detailed how the Tesla chief had an alleged liaison with the Google billionaire’s estranged wife (and now Rfk Jr.

The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
The first film had a budget of $175 million and made $858 million worldwide. It received two Oscar noms for original screenplay and animated feature, winning the latter. However, during the era when the Academy recognized 5-10 movies for best picture, it didn’t land among the eight that included...

Paul Scheer would absolutely call himself a go-getter. After attending NYU, he forged his way through the New York improv scene, eventually ending up as a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Now decades into his comedy career, he acts, writes, hosts multiple podcasts and his own Twitch channel. So when he set out to author his first book — what became the memoir Joyful Recollections of Trauma — he was surprised to be surprised by what it required. Scheer spent months working on the book before taking it out to publishers — something that isn’t often done in the world of celebrity nonfiction, where it’s standard to sell on a pitch alone — and even hired his own copy editor to get every page up to his standards. He also took charge of Joyful‘s marketing plan, which included holding signing events in airport bookstores.
“It can be very isolating,” he says.

The melancholy, fable-like French drama “Eternal Playground” has a glowing warmth from its very first moments. That comes from the open beaming face of its lead actor, Andranic Manet. He plays Gaspard, a young music teacher in Paris who’s grieving the death of his twin sister. As he wishes his students a good summer on the last day of school, the actor’s face registers the promise and possibility that may come while adding a bittersweet tinge of what may never be regained, setting the tone for co-directors Pablo Cotten and Joseph Rozé’s story of friendship and growing up.
Soon after, Gaspard’s five best friends arrive to spend a few days with him in the empty school building. They all used to be students there and have come together to honor Gapsrd’s sister Louise, whose last wish was for all of them to gather and reclaim the fun,...

David Oyelowo plays the title character in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” the true story of a man who escaped enslavement and went on to become one of the first U.S. Deputy Marshals. While there is no shortage of stories from the 1860s and 1870s, there are only four known images of Bass Reeves.

Following the grand success of “Inside Out 2” at this weekend’s box office, TheWrap thought it wise to look back at the animation studio’s other most successful films from over the years.

For costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone, working on “The Gilded Age” was a “fantastic” history lesson on the beginnings of contemporary fashion. As she researched the styles of late 19th-century New York through paintings and photographs, she deeply appreciated the complex colors and modern design trends that defined high society during the 1880s.
“A lot of the times, I’m being asked if I modernized it too much. I was like, ‘It’s all there. You just have to pull it out and look for it,'” Maimone said. “[The designs come from] sketches and color palettes from that period with color combinations that are pretty shocking.

The streets are empty for Danny and Michael Philippou.
The Australian twin filmmaking duo behind last year’s surprise horror hit Talk to Me are no longer working on Street Fighter, Legendary’s feature adaptation of the classic video game from Capcom.
Scheduling is partly to blame, according to sources. Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin sooner than later. The Philippous, however, shifted focus to Bring Her Back, which reteams with their Talk to Me studio A24. That project, which will star Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt, begins shooting later this month in Australia.
Street Fighter is now looking for a new filmmaker.

So you think you know everything about attorney Elsbeth Tascioni? Think again.
“We will learn more about everybody’s backstory,” says Carrie Preston, teasing Season 2 of “Elsbeth.”
“There will be delving not just into her past and personal life, but also Captain C.W. Wagner’s, played by Wendell Pierce, and Carra Patterson’s Officer Kaya Blanke. Now, in this season, Elsbeth talks about her son Teddy. Before, on ‘The Good Wife,’ she only mentioned him once. We will probably be deepening that too in Season 2.”
“Elsbeth,” competing at Monte-Carlo Television Festival, is finally putting Preston’s fan-favorite, Emmy-winning attorney front and center.

HBO is welcoming three Tony Award winners and one nominee to New York high society in “The Gilded Age” Season 3.
Phylicia Rashad and Jordan Donica will join the period drama series in recurring roles, while Brian Stokes Mitchell and Victoria Clark will appear as guest stars.
“The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic and social change, when huge fortunes were made and lost overnight,” the upcoming season’s logline states. “With the old guard officially deposed, New York society finds itself turned upside down and all must get their house in order. But even those at the helm of this new era may find that change comes at a cost.”
Rashad will portray Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland, a woman from a prominent family in Newport with ties dating back to the American Revolution. She has high standards, an occasionally sharp tongue, and is unwilling to compromise the standards...

If Paula Pell had her way, “Girls5Eva” would be one of the longest-running comedies on television.
“I could do it for 15 seasons, and I’d be tapping my foot like, ‘What’s the news on 16?’” Pell told TheWrap. Part of that passion has to do with the talent behind the series, which moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season. Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by the team of Robert Carlock, Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond, the series centers on Pell, Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Busy Philipps.
“Girls5Eva” follows a girl group that used to be big in the 2000s but has since been shoved aside. Decades after disbanding, these now middle-aged women reunite to take another shot at becoming pop stars. Pell portrays Gloria, the group member who used to be closeted and who spends most of Season 3 sleeping with her various fans while touring on the road.

Amazon MGM Studios has given a pilot order to “The Nightbeast,” a horror comedy starring Tatiana Maslany.
In “The Nightbeast,” per the official logline, “a young mother unsatisfied with her seemingly perfect suburban life begins an affair with the boogeyman in her son’s closet — a surprisingly sexy man called the Nightbeast. But this harmless affair she thought to be a figment of her imagination begins to have unexpected consequences, as her two worlds increasingly begin to collide in this seductive, darkly comedic tale.”

Fox News is making some changes to its White House bureau … subtle changes, at least.
The cable news channel has promoted White House correspondents Peter Doocy and Jacqui Heinrich to senior White House correspondents. They will both continue to cover the Biden administration, with Heinrich also continuing to host Fox News Audio’s Fox News Rundown podcast.
Doocy, who covered President Biden’s campaign in 2020 and continued in the White House, has long been something of a thorn in the side of Biden’s press team, occasionally sparring during briefings with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and before that Jen Psaki.
The promotions lock in Fox’s White House team during a long 2020 election process.
“Peter’s commitment to providing viewers with hourly news and insight from the White House has remained steadfast since he started in this role straight off the 2020 campaign trail and we’re thrilled to have him continue doing so,...

Paramount’s stock fell below $10 per share on Monday, marking a record low for the struggling media conglomerate with its lowest price since Viacom and CBS merged in 2019.
Shares hit a 52-week low of $9.81 per share, well off its 52-week high of $17.50 per share on Dec. 11. The stock finished the day’s trading session at $9.83.
The company, currently at a market capitalization of $6.86 billion with long-term debt of $14.6 billion, has seen its stock price fall 80.5% in the past five years, 37% in the past year, 31% year to date, 36% in the past six months and 18% in the past month.
The latest decline comes after controlling shareholder Shari Redstone scrapped merger talks with David Ellison’s Skydance Media last week. The two-step plan would’ve seen Ellison acquire Redstone’s National Amusements, which controls 77% of Paramount’s voting stock, before merging Skydance with the studio to create a combined company.

Viaplay Content Distribution has sold Sweden’s “Little Did I Know” – starring Alexandra Rapaport – to Australia (Sbs), Croatia (Pickbox), Basque Spain (Eitb), Indonesia (Mola) and Latin America (Dmd).
The film, which plays in competition this week at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, is produced by Bigster. It follows Petra (played by Rapaport), who is in for a rude awakening: her “perfect” husband, the father of her two children, is having an affair and he wants a divorce. Now in her 50s, she has to face the music. But she also can’t help thinking about her 15-year-old self (Ella Hammarsten Liedberg), full of hope and falling in love for the very first time.
The film, based on Martina Haag’s books, and her own story, is also directed by her.

AMC Networks publicity head Marnie Black is set to depart the company after 13 years.
Black, who served as the network’s head of publicity, helmed PR and awards campaigns for hit shows like “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” “Killing Eve,” “Better Call Saul,” “Interview With the Vampire,” “Dark Winds” and “The Ones Who Live.”
She will remain in the position until June to ensure a smooth transition, per Black’s internal memo sent to staffers Monday, with Olivia Dupuis and Joy Phillips set to remain as her deputies upon her departure.
“After 13 memorable years, I have decided to depart from AMC Networks,” Black wrote in the memo. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, leading the best teams in the business … We’ve won our share of Emmys along the way, impacted pop culture vernacular and made television history on more than one occasion. Latency star Alexis Ren knows full well the perception that comes with a social media star making the jump to acting. It provokes the same skeptics that countless athletes, musicians and professional wrestlers had to endure when they first embarked on their own film and television careers in decades past. But, by keeping an open mind, we now have a long list of crossover performers that we’ll forever embrace on the big and small screen. In Ren’s case, she has the utmost respect for the craft of acting, so she started educating herself back in 2018, all in an effort to earn the same kind of acceptance that Mark Wahlberg, Lady Gaga and Dave Bautista once sought and received from the audience.
However, the news didn’t go over well at first with Ren’s sprawling social media following of 25-plus million people.

Jordan Peele is ready to return to presumably scare you silly.
The writer/director’s fourth film has now been officially dated for Oct. 23, 2026. It will be released, once again, by Universal Studios, which has handled every one of his movies so far, and produced by Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
There has been no logline or additional details revealed.
Originally, the project was announced for Christmas Day this year. However, the movie was delayed due to the writers and actors strikes last summer.
Since his last release, 2022’s “Nope,” Peele has certainly kept busy — he cowrote, produced and costarred in Henry Selick’s stop-motion feature “Wendell & Wild;” produced Dev Patel’s directorial debut “Monkey Man;” and has been shepherding “Him” (formerly “Goat”), a horror sports movie starring Marlon Wayans based on a blacklist script; and is working on a video game called “Od” with auteur Hideo Kojima.

For viewers of a certain age — or, perhaps more likely at this point, most ages — the term “Brat Pack” evokes nostalgia at its fondest. Movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink” remain rites of passage for teenagers coming of age nearly 40 years later, and few would argue that the 1980s didn’t represent a high-water mark for teen movies. For actual members of that coterie of actors, it’s a little more complicated.
That’s especially true of Andrew McCarthy, who remains so conflicted about the term coined by David Blum in his June 10, 1985 cover story for New York that he made a documentary about it (after earlier publishing a memoir entitled “Brat”). A core Brat Packer whose filmography is headlined by the likes of “Pretty in Pink” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” McCarthy has more recently stepped behind the camera and directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black” and “13 Reasons Why,...

YouTube is making a significant addition to its product, in the middle of a contentious presidential election year.
The streaming video platform will let users attach notes to videos, allowing them to add context to viewers.
“For example, this could include notes that clarify when a song is meant to be a parody, point out when a new version of a product being reviewed is available, or let viewers know when older footage is mistakenly portrayed as a current event,” the platform wrote in a blog post.
The feature will be limited at first, restricted to mobile users in the U.S., and English only. A “limited number” of contributors will be invited by email or the Creator Studio, with additional contributors being added over time.
Users will see the notes appear in the next few weeks.

Jordan Peele has a date to return to movie theaters. Universal has set an Oct. 23, 2026 release date for Peele’s next feature.
No other details were available, but the Halloween season date feels appropriate given the director’s penchant for horror.
After a career in comedy, Peele burst onto the scene as an A-list director with 2017’s Get Out, a film that earned Peele an original screenplay Oscar, as well as landing noms for picture, director and for best actor for star Daniel Kaluuya. It went on to gross gross $255.4 million globally on a budget of just $4.5 million.
Peele followed his Get Out success with 2019’s Us (256.2 million) and 2022’s Nope ($171.2 million). The filmmaker will produce via his Monkey Paw banner. As a producer, he has has the Marlon Wayans-starrer Him due out this September.

Jordan Peele fans will have to wait to a bit longer for his next movie.
The Oscar-winner’s fourth film as a director will now debut on Oct. 23, 2026. That’s a significant jump from the original release date of Dec. 25, 2024, which was announced in March 2023, two months before the WGA strike that, along with the SAG-AFTRA strike starting in July, brought production to a standstill for most of the year. The delay led Universal to pull the film from its calendar; Peele announced the new release date over social media.

Beyond that sliver of information, virtually nothing is known about the project, from the logline to any prospective cast members. But Peele did briefly discuss the film on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast on Jan. 1.
