The Tony Award-winning musical Jelly’s Last Jam is heading to Los Angeles with an exciting cast!
Jasmine Amy Rogers will be leading the production following her acclaimed turn as Betty Boop in the Broadway bound musical Boop! last year in Chicago. While casting for the upcoming Broadway production has not yet been confirmed, it’s widely believed that she will be reprising her performance.
In the meantime, Jasmine is set to play Anita in Pasadena Playhouse’s production of Jelly’s Last Jam, which will run from May 29 through June 23.
Susan Birkenhead, who wrote the lyrics for Boop!, also wrote the lyrics for Jelly’s Last Jam. The classic musical features music by Jelly Roll Morton and a book by George C. Wolfe.
Also starring in the Pasadena Playhouse production are John Clarence Stewart from Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Cress Williams from Black Lightning.
Here’s the synopsis:...

I think it is about time. Many projects to come out in the past year on television and in film have had many elements of dance in them. ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ had several dance numbers per episode, ‘In the Heights’ was filled with enormous and joyful group routines, Steven Speilberg’s ‘West Side Story’ will surely have similar levels of dance, and there’s even going to be an entire primetime show on Fox starting in the fall that’s a show about the making of a dance show called ‘The Big Leap.’ With the amount of dance in these high-profile projects, they rely heavily on choreographers to make their final product look as smooth and grand as possible, yet when you go on a site like IMDb and look at the production credits, the choreography team is listed under “additional crew.

"Swipe Left" provided a fun, humorous, lighthearted, and entertaining hour.
Some of the highlights of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 Episode 12 included the crew helping Marjan with her dating life, honing in on that family vibe they've succeeded at this season.
And, of course, we got another Tarlos update on the path to marriage in the form of a bump in the road.
Marjan is due to get back into the dating world and find a nice guy who can keep up with her and respect everything she is and wants to be in her life.
But dating is such a freaking hassle and something that Marjan doesn't have the patience or the institution to put up with when it comes to the stupid apps and dumb games that guys play.
It quickly became apparent when she went on a series of dates at the tea house with some...

We don’t actually believe that 9-1-1: Lone Star would deprive fans of the #Tarlos wedding we’ve all been waiting for, but that isn’t stopping us from worrying about the couple’s future, especially after Tuesday’s episode.
With their big day inching ever closer, T.K. and Carlos sought an officiant, including one kindly minister who reminded them that they’d be bonded “for eternity… burning in hell.” (Spoiler alert: He won’t be performing the ceremony.)

“P-Valley” has been renewed for a third season consisting of 10 episodes at Starz. The critically acclaimed strip club-set drama is currently the cable network’s biggest show in the U.S.
The sophomore season of “P-Valley” — created and executive produced by Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall — averages nearly 10.3 million viewers across linear, VOD and streaming platforms domestically, the network reported.
“‘P-Valley’ continues to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as it captures the nuances of the Mississippi Delta with an unprecedented level of humanity and artistry,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz, in a statement. “This layered drama gets beyond the glitz through authentic and complex characters that have captured the hearts of critics and audiences alike. We cannot wait to see what Katori has in store for us in season three.”

Megan Thee Stallion is never afraid to drop a bar or two upholding her own greatness, and her latest single is a whole song dedicated to just that. On Monday, the rapper dropped the stylish music video for the song “Her,” a leading track from her recently released studio album, Traumazine.
Directed by Colin Tilley, the video features a group of fabulously clad Megans voguing along to the house-inspired track as the rapper’s boasts about being the top dog are supported by her impeccable flow.
“Just the other day, I heard a h*e say / matter of fact, what could a h*e say? / With a face like this and a b**ch this paid, sh*t, what could a h*e say?” the rapper opens. “The bag so expensive, my p**sy came with it, body so nice, they be sayin’, ‘Who did it?’ / But everything natural, actual,...

P-Valley said goodbye to one of its complex characters this week.
Unfortunately, on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 6, it wasn't the character that fans wanted to see gone.
Sadly, Derrick lives on. Meanwhile, Big Teak, we hardly knew ye.
Lil Murda's prison pal Teak disappeared from the show in just six episodes. And we only got to hear John Clarence Stewart (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist alumni) sing a few bars, despite the barber praising Teak's voice.
But that wasn't Teak's purpose. First, Teak allowed Stewart to play a radically different character than the straight-laced Simon on Zoey.
Teak also illustrated that, unlike Murda, not every ex-con successfully could make the transition back to the real world.
A prime example of that was the scene at the gas station. Teak's confusion over how to pay at the pump was quickly overshadowed by Murda's delight when he heard his song being played on a car radio.

"P-Valley" is as raw, uncut, and uncensored as it gets when it comes to portraying Southern strip-club culture on TV. However, the hit Starz drama examines so much more than that. For the past two seasons, viewers have been exposed to some of the grittiest stories ever told with Black and queer characters front and center, sharing true-life-inspired tales that explore the nuances of colorism, racism, queerness, sex work, and domestic violence.
". . . when I first got those scenes, I was scared to death because I've never done anything like this on camera."
Season two's fourth episode, titled "Demethrius," is a huge turning point for Lil Murda (J. Alphonse Nicholson) and Big Teak (John Clarence Stewart), as well as Mercedes (Brandee Evans) and Farrah (Shamika Cotton) - the latter two characters had never engaged in a lesbian encounter. In the episode, both pairings cross into sexual territory and end up sleeping together.

Nothing is ever simple in Chucalissa.
Naturally, craziness reigned when The Pynk's reopening and Uncle Clifford's 40th birthday landed on the same night on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 2.
But even getting to that point was problematic for Clifford and company.
Holding the auditions mandated by Autumn was a great way to introduce the new characters for this season.
Roulette, brash and contentious, came off as a younger version of Mercedes, which is sure not to go over well with the Og dancer. But little else was revealed about her.
Whisper certainly was an intriguing addition. Beyond her talents on the pole, she also has a spooky quality, such as in the scene where she used an old brass pole to predict Roulette's future like a Magic 8-Ball.
As well synched as Whisper and Roulette were, they had to have performed together in the past. But again, that was left in the dark for now.

A series revolving around a down and dirty strip club in the Mississippi Delta isn’t standard hit TV show fare. But Tony-nominated and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Katori Hall didn’t branch out from the stage to television to play by the rules. When her edgy TV series “P-Valley” debuted on Starz two years ago, circumstances were not ideal. The world was battling Covid plus social protests prompted by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery were erupting all over the nation. In Season 2, those real-world events figure prominently as the show deftly avoids a sophomore slump and rises to its occasion.
Although ostensibly about mysterious stranger Hailey/Autumn Knight (British actress Elarica Johnson) arriving in the small fictional town of Chucalissa and making ends meet as a stripper, it’s “P-Valley’s” initial surrounding players who catapulted the show to cult status. Nonbinary female-presenting Uncle...

Based on Katori Hall’s play Pussy Valley, P-Valley Season 2 returns to the Mississippi Delta where lies an oasis of grit and glitter in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find. This Southern-fried, hour-long drama tells the kaleidoscopic story of a “little strip club that could” and the big characters who come through its doors — the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful and the damned. Trap music meets film noir in this lyrical and atmospheric series that dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of the Piggly Wiggly and the pawnshop.

The story of Zoey Clarke may not be over just yet. There's talk that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist may be revived for a two-hour movie special.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” after getting axed by NBC, may be getting a second life at Roku.
Roku, which has been bulking up its original programming slate, is in discussions with Lionsgate Television, the producer of the musical dramedy, for a movie special bringing back the original cast including star Jane Levy, Variety confirmed.
Roku and Lionsgate reps declined to comment.
Sources cautioned that while Roku and Lionsgate are in talks, there’s no deal signed. The project under discussion would be a two-hour movie special that would hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays. While other reports have said Roku would have the option to pick up “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for a new season, a source familiar with the talks said that’s not on the table and that the movie deal would be a one-off.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is nearing a comeback, though it may be a brief one.
The musical comedy, which was canceled earlier this year by NBC after two seasons, is closing in on a deal with Roku for a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap. The project is being eyed for the holidays.
According to TV Line, which broke the news, if the movie performs well, a potential third season could be in the cards. It is not yet a done deal but is in advanced negotiations. The entire main cast is expected to return, though not all deals are done.
Reps for Roku and Lionsgate, which produces the show with Universal Television, declined to comment. Peacock decided against ordering a third season after it was canceled in May.

The search for a new home for NBC's canceled Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist just hit a major snag.
According to Deadline, the options on the cast expired last week, and here's the kicker:
They were not extended by Lionsgate.
While this would typically spell doom for a canceled series searching for a new home, Lionsgate is still trying to find a way to continue the series.
It's a rare development, but such a move could come down to cast availability because they are now free to pursue other projects.
With these negotiations being so intricate, it's more likely the series will remain dead, but stranger things have happened.
Deadline notes that Lionsgate is exploring continuing the show as a series, a miniseries, and a movie, possibly whichever would allow the fans to get some closure.
Unfortunately, the outlet stresses that neither option is believed to be close to reality, leaving...

The options on the cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, headlined by Jane Levy, expired earlier this week, and they have not been extended, I have learned.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lead studio Lionsgate Television has been looking to find a new home for the show since NBC canceled the series three weeks ago after two seasons and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.
I hear conversations are still ongoing, with various options to continue the story of Zoey Clarke explored — series, miniseries or a movie. While none is believed to be close to reality, if any progresses, Lionsgate would need to make new deals with some or all of the Season 2 regular cast, which included Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” returned for its second season on NBC this year with more relationship drama and long-take musical numbers than ever. The comedy-drama stars Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a manager at a big tech firm who suddenly develops the power of knowing people’s innermost feelings, as expressed through musical performances. This leads to some awkward encounters but also heartening moments as Zoey guides her friends and family to express how they truly feel. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with nine Emmy contenders from the series.
The series also delves into the personal and professional lives of those friends and family, including Max (Skylar Astin), Zoey’s coworker and friend who harbors a secret crush and Simon (John Clarence Stewart), another co-worker who finds kinship with Zoey. In Season 2, both turn into lovers for Zoey as she tries to figure out who she is and what she wants in life.

Television producers have long used their medium as a tool to push progressive thinking on such nuanced topics as interracial dating, queer acceptance and abortion into everyday American households. But what about storytelling that makes these creators and their supporters point the finger inward at their own shortcomings and failures to act?
This year, as a result of increased publicity for Black Lives Matter and other similar movements, several Emmy contenders have had honest conversations about race in their writers’ rooms and on screen. These depictions include the obvious outward kind, as well as the internal biases that live within us all.
Christina M. Kim, co-showrunner for the CW’s martial-arts drama “Kung Fu,” says her program had an added layer of need to cover the matter because “our show, is about a Chinese American family and a lot of it takes place within the Chinese-American community.”
As co-showrunner Robert Berens reminds,...

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist may be canceled, but it's not dead yet.
Series creator Austin Winsberg still has hope the series will get a pickup elsewhere, and has advised fans to assemble to find a new home.
“Okay. Here we are. The news is out. NBC/Peacock have decided not to go forward with another season. We can discuss that later. But right now I refuse to believe the show is dead,” he tweeted on Wednesday after the sad news broke.
“There is too much love and goodwill and the fan base is incredible. Now here is what I need.”
He continued: “I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else. But the more fan support we can throw behind it – the better."
"Please tweet #saveZoeysplaylist. Let’s get it trending and let the powers that be know the appetite is strong. Also open to any other suggestions to prove the love,...
